Descendants of William Carpenters of the Bevis (1638) Carpenter Cousins Encyclopedia of Carpenters - 2023 Update

Notes

4069. Abel Carpenter

Number 8954 in the Carpenter Memorial on page 824.
Family on page 824 (#1832).

NAME: Abel in the CM and James Abel from: Sally Verma on Sat, 4 Mar 2000.
Her E-Mail is: SallyVerma@aol.com
COMMENT:
I am not finding evidence of James - only Abel as a name.

NOTE:  A Descendant through this son has Y-DNA match with Group 12 of the Carpenter Cousins Y-DNA Project. AND not of Group 3. Likely due to NPE or bad geenalogy?

FATHER:
George challenged and Benjamin seemingly disproved by Y-DNA test.

NOTE:
To go to Harrison County, WV from Fauquier County is by land. North into Loudoun County then west on the Old Northwestern Turnpike over the Shenandoah Mountains until you get to Harrison County then part of VA.
To go to Lawrence County, OH from Harrison County you head west on the Old Northwestern Turnpike until you get to the Ohio River. Then use the river to float to Lawrence County. Note, there was also a trail that went inland (west of the river into Ohio) then south.
There are several ways to go from Lawrence County, OH to Fountain County, IN. A) Down the Ohio river to Wabash River. Up the Wabash to Fountain County. B) By land northwest across the State of Ohio and near the center of the state follow the Old Chicago Road to Lafayette, OH then SW to Fountain County.
Virginia offically lost West Virginia in 1863 when WV became a state. So all counties were in VA prior.
Harrison County was created in 1784 from Monongalia County which was created in 1776 from District of Augusta. Augusta County was created in 1738 from Orange County that was created in 1734 from Spotsylavania which was created in 1720 from the counties of Essex (1692), King and Queen (1691) and King William (1700). Each of the three later also break down, but as given provides enough of an example.

4087. John Carpenter

NOTE:
This is NOT John Carpenter (RIN 20909) Number 873 in the Carpenter Memorial.  Page 151.
While this Carpenter line is a Rehoboth (Group 3) line based on descendant Y-DNA testing it has unique DYS markers. This descendant line has a common DYS448=21 and DYS576=19.

RESEARCH:  Further research efforts are underway trying to confirm the ancestry of this John Carpenter.  We know he is a descendant of Hope Carpenter RIN 12716.

BIRTH:  NY or NJ?
Speculated NY based upon ... From Cyclopedia of Mon, Marion and Taylor counties page 124 marion county section regarding John Harr John M. Harr was born in Booth's Creek district Taylor county November 15 1839 He is a son of Richard and Lurana (Carpenter) Harr. Richard Hall was born in Marion County, 1808. Worked extensively in Taylor County. He married Lurana, a daughter of JOHN CARPENTER, formerly of Long Island, New York but a resident and citizen of Marion county at the time of the marriage.
Jeff Carpenter comments:
This [the above] is about as tertiary of a source as you could find. Also, it was Monongalia not Marion county at the time of the marriage....but it was all that I had. He very well could have been born in NJ then moved to NY prior to working his way to WV through PA. Or, Lurana may just have been referring to the source of the Carpenters as she understood it (Jamaica, NY).

ARTICLE: "Carpenters of the South," by Terry L. Carpenter, e-mail 1999: diluvius@flash.net, FHL 929.273 C225 ctl, chapter entitled "John Carpenter of Monongalia and Marion Counties, West Virginia", pages 1-4, published in 1990:  "John Carpenter was born c1765 in NY or NJ and died c1827 in VA (DARM: 63, 560). He was possibly descended from John....... This John Carpenter's father, John Carpenter, was born c1710-1750 (probably around 1740), married Anna ---, and was a native of NY according to GSM (Goldie Sweet Martin, "Those Martins of Ours, and Some Related Families," Portland, Oregon 1979.)  He could be a son of John and Mary (Drivers) Carpenter. There is strong evidence of some type of connection in the family names of descendants, but more research is needed.  John Carpenter of Monongalia Cny VA married Nancy Miller c 1785 (GSM)."  Their children listed. See C-3, #1, pages 1-4.

ARTICLE: "Some Martin Cousins", Goldie Sweet Martin and Dorothy Martin Bayless, 1979, pages 222-224: "Carpenter, John, Sr. (John 1 to Long Island 1700 and Anna) married Nancy Miller."  Eight of their children and their spouses given.  See M-17.
NOTE: Data submitted 19 Jun 1979 from Mary B. Carpenter, Star Route 6, Box 198, Lewisburg, W.Va, 24901.

AF: Ancestral File, 1998 Edition submitted in 1997 by Donald and Judith Brothers, HC33, Box 1176, Boise, ID 83706.  "John Carpenter, b. 1765, NY, fa. John Carpenter, mo. Anna, sp. Nancy Miller"  Children given as: "John M., Prudence Lucy, Ashman, Mary, David G., Jane, Lorenna, Rowena, Elizabeth, Nancy Ann and Elmira."  Only John M. has spouses given.  [In 1999 Jan wrote to the Brothers, but did not hear back.]
MORE:
Was John married twice, first to Nancy Miller and second to Ann ---?  If so, it would appear that the first children are Nancy's and the later children Ann's.  See notes of the children, especially Lucy Prudence, Lorenna/Lurana, etc.  See also C-3, #3, a copy of the 1993 Ancestral File submission of John Carpenter and Sarah Mary Driver.  It would appear that their son John was born in 1747 in Gloucester, NJ.  Further, it would seem unlikely, based on his birth date, that he could be this John.

MIGRATION PATTERNS: Robert M. Hershman reported via e-mail on 28 Apr 1998 that many of the lines he has researched "came to central WV from either NY or NJ.  The migration pattern included their stopping for a period in Hampshire, Hardy County, WV or Frederick Co., MD."
NOTE: Does this appy to this Carpenter family?

CARPENTER-MILLER CONNECTION - see wife Ann Miller's notes.
AND:
The following notes are from Patty Carpenter Helms, 1998: "John died in 1827 believed to be in Monongalia County, VA.  His daughters were married in Monongalia County, and he is listed in the 1810, 1820 Monongalia census.  He is also listed in the Virginia Tax records.  NOTE: John bought property with William Miller on Siscoe's Run [1805].  Is William Miller a brother-in-law?

SPOUSE:
Wives may have been of NY or VA?  Ann is a confirmed spouse. Miller or Mueller for maiden name?
Jeff Carpenter wrote:
Actually, Ann Miller (if she is of the Palatine Mueller family) was born in NJ as well and only moved to NY later if I am remembering correctly.  ...

CENSUS: 1790 US Census - WHERE? Larry provides ...
(a) 1790 New York (Warwick, Orange County) Census: the record indicates John Carpenter resided in Warrick; the household included 2 males (1 under 16 years of age) and 2 females ... our family records indicate that in 1790 John was married to Anne Miller and they had a 3-year old boy (John S) and a 1-year old girl (Jane)
Our family records also indicate that the family migrated to (W)Va after 1785 marriage of John and Anne, and after the birth of John S in 1787; our records indicate that John S and his sister were born in NY
It might just be coincidence, but our family records match the Warwick Census.

CENSUS: 1800 US Census - WHERE?  Larry provides ...
(b) Jeff provide Randall and me with a copy of the 1900 (typo should be 1800) US Census Record for Franklin, Greene County PA; the information in the census matches the number in household that is a good match to what our Family Records, i.e., Males: 1 that was10-16 (John S was 13); 1 26-44 (John was 40); Female: 1 between 26-44 (Nancy 35); and 4 females under 10 (Mary, Prudence, Elizabeth, Ashman) ... Franklin, Greene County is about 15 north of the WV-PA border; it is about 30 miles from Fairmont where John (124706) raised his family ... I visited the courthouse and genealogy society ... Waynesburg was created in 1896 ... the PA Septennial Census and the 1900 (typo should be 1800) Federal Census were reviewed ... but, in reviewing the land records John (124706) was not found to be a land owner ... thus, our belief is that John and his family were either in the process of migrating or for some reason they were temporarily located in Franklin PA
(c) We have land records that John and Anne owned property in Union District in the Fairmont WV area ... however, the records do not show how he acquired the property ... the records we have show how his farm was sold after his death in 1827; the records clearly show that land was owned by John and Anne Carpenter ... FYI: Timothy's father resides on a portion of John's original farm; and Timothy is a minister for the church located in the area where John and Anne resided.

LAND: 1801

John Carpenter in Monongalia County is 1801 (Patty Helms may have a 1799 property purchase by him….I don’t) and reads as follows from the old deed books-OS 2 page 383 - James and Dorothy Dunn to Joseph Kratzer.  56 acres on water of Buffelow, south end of tract Dunn now lives on, adjoining John Magee, William Miller and John Carpenter.  (I think this land is actually on the east side but by the wording should be on the west)  In the next year or so he buys land on the east side of the Monongahela So the timing fits for both Ann being in Virginia upwards of 40 years and that Thomas S. Haymond knowing Ann for upwards of 40 years in the 1845 affidavit.

LAND: 1805
RichardCLarson@aol.com wrote 29 July 2005:  There "is a purchase in Monongalia County for land in 1805 by John Carpenter on Pricketts creek from William Miller. Cisoes run.
Larry confirms this in an email on 21 Feb 2018.
Larry went to the Monongalia County Records room focusing on Tax Records, Land Records, and Survey Records for time period around 1800-1830 ... This time, I was able to find John Carpenter living in Prickett's Fort area and paying land taxes for 1806, 1807, and 1808 ... there was a lapse of time before he showed up again in the years 1817, 1818, 1819, and 1820 ... and, in 1824, his son John Jr. shows up in the tax records.

MORE: Likey by Patty?
In 1810 there were 9 children listed as living in the household; it lists 2 males under the age of 10 which would account for David born 1803, Ashman born 1801; 1 male age 16-26 not sure of who this could.  Is there another brother not accounted for?  2 males age 45 & up, one is John the father, who is the other?  2 females under the age of 10 which is probably Rhoanna and Lurenna and Phoebe; 4 females ages 10-16.

Marriage Bonds of Monongalia County, which were extracted in the D.A.R. Magazine from 1928-1932. The Marriage Bond for Rhuanna Carpenter and William Barnes, dated March 5, 1826, lists John Carpenter as the father of the bride. However, the Marriage Bond for Lurenna Carpenter and Richard Harr, dated October 23, 1827, lists “John Carpenter, dec” as the father of the bride. If these transcriptions are accurate, they would imply that John Carpenter died in Monongalia County sometime between March 5, 1826 and July 13, 1826. Subject: Re: Carpenter Cousins Y-DNA Project - part of Group 3 - an oddity, a lineage problem & a possible solution
Hey John R Carpenter (and others),
The preponderance of the evidence suggests that Ann or Anna is the mother of David G and Ashman (they had many other siblings as well but only these matter for this discussion) and this is detailed in the attached word document. Who John Carpenter’s (b approx 1764 NY) father is … is the real question. The genetics suggest his father was Ashman #21897 or a sibling of #21897. That gives a couple of generations to develop the DYS448=21 and DYS576=19 deviations that match with FTDNA #258429 and #37035 (and clearly do not match with the Samuel #3341 or John #12521 lines). Just missing the tie in (damn revolutionary war). Is FTD#471861 going to be added to the project or does his info come from another source?
I don’t think the John M theory will pan out but I appreciate everyone’s help.
Thanks
Jeff

Subject: Re: Carpenter Cousins Y-DNA Project - 798469 - released signed! - Group 3 (3a?) revisit?
John: results for 798469 (Tim) were as expected ... thanks for your email, attachments, and thoughts ... I added Randall to this email chain ... over the past year or so we did expend some effort to track down John (124706) ... the following is a summary of my activities; Jeff and Randall can chime in ... but, I think we are at a dead end street and in need of some help ... previously:
1) Randall relayed to Jeff and me that he had contacted and forwarded some info to Glen Norman Carpenter ... Glen lives in Fairmont WV which is where Jeff and I grew up ... as my wife and I were and still are care-giving for parents in Fairmont I took on the task to connect with Glen ... although I visited his home and ultimately talked with him on the telephone; he was not a real cooperative individual ... flashing forward about a 15 months and I ran into Glen's son Timothy (798469) at the hospital as I was visiting my first cousin who was fighting lung cancer; Timothy is a country minister in Fairmont and was also visiting my first cousin ... Tim and I had several conversations, I provided him some paper copies of information, and collectively determined that he was not only my cousin but the cousin of the young woman that he was visiting in the hospital ... thanks to Jeff for providing the DNA kit ... and, thanks to Tim for agreeing to take the test ... Jeff, Tim, Randall and I are direct descendants of John (124706) ... we have shared family history; and, we all can tie ourselves back to John (124706) ... Tim and his family believe the 1950s family history developed by a local lawyer that we descended from 3 Carpenter brothers who migrated to New York; one going to Fort Pitt, one to North Carolina, and one to the Virginia salt works ... Jeff and I have the same information, but abandon that thought as we became involved in the Carpenter Cousins Y-DNA project
2) Jeff relayed to Randall and me some records he had uncovered; both appeared to fit John (124706) and his family ... the records are:
(a) 1790 New York (Warwick, Orange County) Census: the record indicates John Carpenter resided in Warrick; the household included 2 males (1 under 16 years of age) and 2 females ... our family records indicate that in 1790 John was married to Anne Miller and they had a 3-year old boy (John S) and a 1-year old girl (Jane)
Our family records also indicate that the family migrated to (W)Va after 1785 marriage of John and Anne, and after the birth of John S in 1787; our records indicate that John S and his sister were born in NY
It might just be coincidence, but our family records match the Warwick Census
(b) Jeff provide Randall and me with a copy of the 1900 US Census Record for Franklin, Greene County PA; the information in the census matches the number in household that is a good match to what our Family Records, i.e., Males: 1 that was10-16 (John S was 13); 1 26-44 (John was 40); Female: 1 between 26-44 (Nancy 35); and 4 females under 10 (Mary, Prudence, Elizabeth, Ashman) ... Franklin, Greene County is about 15 north of the WV-PA border; it is about 30 miles from Fairmont where John (124706) raised his family ... I visited the courthouse and genealogy society ... Waynesburg was created in 1896 ... the PA Septennial Census and the 1900 Federal Census were reviewed ... but, in reviewing the land records John (124706) was not found to be a land owner ... thus, our belief is that John and his family were either in the process of migrating or for some reason they were temporarily located in Franklin PA
(c) We have land records that John and Anne owned property in Union District in the Fairmont WV area ... however, the records do not show how he acquired the property ... the records we have show how his farm was sold after his death in 1827; the records clearly show that land was owned by John and Anne Carpenter ... FYI: Timothy's father resides on a portion of John's original farm; and Timothy is a minister for the church located in the area where John and Anne resided .
(d) NEW: Additional piece of information that Jeff passed on to us was a Revolutionary War Application by Peter Miller ... on page in which Anne Carpenter (John 124706) provided information to support a petition to provide Mary with a pension; Mary was the wife of Peter Miller ... and, in that record it is clear that Mary and Anne were sisters ... Anne's statement indicates she was present when Peter and Mary were married in 1785 in Goshen, Orange, New York
In tracking down Peter and Mary ancestry; they had 14 children; the first 7 were born in New York; the remaining 7 children were born in (W)Va ... the last child to be born in NY was Henry on December 23, 1793 ... the next child (Eleanor) was born in (W)Va in July 16, 1795 ... Land records indicate that Peter purchased 348 acres in Fairmont on June 14, 1796 ...
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
And, with that we are stuck in time ... all of our records indicate John (124706) was born in Long Island, New York ... as for who his parents are or when and how he migrated to Fairmont WV is a mystery; we have pieces of information, but some is in conflict (e.g., being in Franklin PA in 1800 begs the question as to the accuracy of records for four of his children that indicate they were born in VA, family belief is that the family migrated to (W)Va after Jane was born in 1789 but before Mary was born in 1794) .
At this point I am open to any suggestions as to how to eliminate the "?" and connect Hope (12716) and John (124706)   Larry

Subject: Re: Thoughts to JRC 3 Johns ... and, info on Tax Records .. LKC Follow-Up
All: My grandchildren commitments to help watch, transport to/from school, etc. takes up most of my time during the weekdays; however, I do have a couple of 5 hour periods where I plan to dedicate several hours over the next few months towards trying to bring as much light to 124706 as possible ... and, once we are into the summer months I will have more time ... my personal plan:
A) as time becomes available, I will slip down to the Monongalia County Courthouse (10 min drive) to look at the late 1700 early 1800 records (deeds, land records, survey records, probate, etc.) ... every so often I will upload to copies of records to the dropbox created by JRC
B) I will make contact with the genealogical society of Marion County (final destination and place of burial of 124706) ... this county was created after the death of 124706; most of the records prior to 1842 are located in the county I live in, i.e., Monongalia County ... however, I may be able to find a few nuggets of information
C) I will attempt to find at least one additional descendant of Hope (12716) and one additional descendant of John (124706) ... once found, I will commit to sponsor at least two of the individuals to a Y-DNA test ... hopefully, the information will help us better understand where 124706 fits
Wish me luck ... progress will probably be slow ... but, I am a persistent person .  Larry

John & Terry: no action, copied you to simply let you know we are still working … but, progress is slow
Jeff, Randall, Lori, and Ron (and if you can, please provide a copy of the attached to Tim): About a year ago we circulated some emails with some new thoughts and theories … off and on over the past year I have made several trips to the Mon County court house records room, the Greene County records room and the Marion County and Greene County Genealogy rooms … I have spent numerous hours on the computer … sorry to say I do not have a lot to report back to you … however, I have and am in the process to reduce my notes into electronic booklets … attached is the first booklet which looks at John (C#124706) ancestry, a subsequent book will look into his life as it may have unfolded.
I have in my notes a lot of information I will eventually share with you about John (C#124706) post 1800, i.e., records of land, taxes, etc. … I am in the process of transferring that information to an electronic file and forwarding to you … but, do not hold your breath as it may take me a couple of months before I find enough free time to pull it together
With respect to pre-1800 information, sad to report but I have not found a lot of additional information … I have tried to reach out to other sons of Hope (e.g., Hope or John descendants) to see if I could encourage and/or pay for a Y-DNA test to expand the database; counting Hezekiah there are 14 grandson and as you work you way down there are dead-ends and also a large number of possibilities … attached is a document that I pulled together over the last few weeks to reduce to writing the information I currently have … at this point I am at an standstill … hopefully, the information in the attached provides you with some new pieces of the puzzle and somewhat captures family stories we have all heard so many times from our elders
If you have any thoughts to correct or enhance the attached, then drop me a note or give me a call, and I will try to make adjustments … otherwise, simply place the attached in your files and folder of thoughts … as for me, for the time being I will turn my attention to developing a similar document about John (C#124706) as his life unfolded in north central WV in the early 1800s.
The attached is a PDF file; it is structured in a mirror format to allow for front to back printing ... if anyone wants the Word file in order to copy/enhance wording or save the digitized attachments to your computer, then drop me a note … or if you simply want the digitized copy of any of the attachments sent to you in a separate file, then simply drop me a note.

Ann Miller

COMMENT:  See notes on husband, John Carpenter.
QUESTION: Are Nancy Miller and Ann or Anna the same person?  Or did John marry first Nancy Miller, the mother of his first several children, then subsequently marry an Ann who was the mother of his later children?  Marriage and other records of the younger children report an "Ann."
AND ...
NAME:  We know the name Anna but no surname as Ann or Nancy Miller.  It appears 3 women merged together?

CARPENTER-MILLER CONNECTION
BOOK:
Peter Miller 1759-1838 - Patriot, Patriarch, & West Virginia Frontiersman - Historical Context and Three Generations of Descendants - By Dennis D. Miller, March 2011, 447 pages, self published in Des Moines, Iowa, USA. PDF version created 26 Jan 2015 (458 pages).

Page 34 or 44 in pdf.
Peter and Mary Are Married
Following the Revolution, Peter returned to Smith's Clove for about a dozen years. He and Mary were married in 1785. Mary indicated in her application for a Widow's Pension that she and Peter were married about the 5th day of February, 1785. Mary's sister, Ann Carpenter, stated that she was present at the marriage and it was in Goshen, New York.
A transcript of the marriage records of the First Presbyterian Church of Goshen has a record of Peter Miller being married to "N" Miller on February 8 1785.

(Page 34 or 44 in pdf)
The idea that Mary may have been Peter's cousin comes from several sources. Peter's Revolutionary War Pension Application file contains several documents that some feel may hint that he and Mary were cousins. Mary states in a sworn statement that she married Peter Miller on "about February 5, 1785." She seems a little unsure of the exact
date but sure of the month and year. Another document mentions their "Intermarriage" and finally Mary's sister, Ann Carpenter, has an affidavit stating that she was present when Peter and Mary were married in Goshen, New York.

Peter's uncle Garrett Miller had a daughter Mary about the right age and a daughter, Ann, who married a man named Carpenter. It seems quite likely to me that the "Ann Carpenter" in the affidavit is the same Ann Carpenter daughter of Garrett Miller, uncle of Peter.

COMMENT: What is not mentioned in the text, but clear in the Pension Application images is that they were done in Marion County. One dated 3 Feb 1845, Approved 29 March 1845, 7 Jul 1838 providing 20 Apr 1838 the death date of Peter Miller, then on Page 37 or 47 in the pdf, 25 Feb 1845 that has the statement of Ann Carpenter also of Marion County.
It does not indicate the first name of the Carpenter who married Ann.  The only male Carpenter cited in this book is a John Carpenter who provided a surety bond to Josiah Wolcott.

On page 57 (67 pdf) in Chapter Four, it has info on Virginia Jane Miller-1 was born on 21 Oct 1785 in New York. She died about 1824. She married Josiah Wolcott on 09 Jan 1812 in Monongalia Co., Virginia, son of Reuben Wolcott and Jane Fleming. He was born on 22 Oct 1789 in Kent, Delaware.

In 1821, Josiah Wolcott was granted permission to operate a ferry and an ordinary (Tavern) near the town of Middletown. On the 28th of May, 1821, the County Court entered the following order:
"On the motion of Josiah Wilcutt it is ordered that the said Josiah keep a good and sufficient boat sufficiently large to carry a wagon and four horses, also the said Josiah is permitted to keep two persons for the purpose of attending his ferry near Polsley's mill across the Monongahela River to Middletown in this county; and thereupon the said Josiah entered into bond in the penalty of $60.00 with John Carpenter his security, conditioned as the law directs, and on motion of the said Josiah a license is granted him (without the payment of any tax) to keep an ordinary at his said ferry, he having entered into bond in the penalty of $150.00 with Reuben Wilcutt his security, conditioned as the law directs." It looks like Nancy Ann and Mary Miller d/o Garrett Miller went to Canada: There has been much discussion as to whether Mary and Ann Miller d/o Garret Miller were the wives of Peter Miller and John Carpenter of Virginia. We know they were sisters as Ann provides an affadavit in support of the pension of Peter Miller stating that she was the sister of Ann. We know that Sarah "Salle" Miller who married John Burgis lived in Virginia but she does not make an affadavit in support of the pension of Peter Miller....she should have if she was a sister to Nancy Ann Carpenter and Mary Miller.
We know that Elizabeth Miller who married Philip Roblin went to Canada, as did Samuel Miller and Hampton Miller (though he did return to New York) The History of Methodism in Canada page 32 states " Joseph Clapp was the brother-in-law of the widow Roblin (Elizabeth Miller/Roblin) and lived in the fourth town."
Joseph Clapp married Nancy Ann Miller Mar 1, 1789 in Adolphustown. This is likely Elizabeth's sister Ann.
The will of George Fowler, the second husband of Patience Griswold/Miller makes a bequest to Hampton Miller the son of my late Wife Patience and to Garrett Garrison the grandson of said wife"
William Garrison married Catherine Miller Feb 5, 1784 in Cornwall, Orange Co.,NY. This is likely Mary Catherine MIller.
If we look at the naming patterns we see that Garret has a sister Katrien. Elizabeth Miller/Roblin names a daughter Nancy Ann Sarah Miller/Burgis names daughters Nancy and Katie Samuel Miller names daughters Nancy Ann and Catherine Catherine Miller/Garrison names a daughter Nancy Nancy Ann Miller/Clapp named a daughter Catherine (and another Patience) Hampton Miller names a daughter Katherine Elizabeth and Garret Miller name daughters Mary.
We see the names Nancy Ann and Catherine repeated throughout the Miller family which lends support to the placement of Nancy Ann Clapp and Catherine (Mary) Garrison in the family of Garret and Patience Miller.

Larry Carpenter comments ...
Jeff: you certainly have looked into the Millers more than I ... I will be out for a few days, but a quick look at what you have sent and a visit to Ms. Herman's website ( http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~saylormowbray/millernancy.html  ) certainly looks as if she has more supportive argument that our Ann and her sister Mary may not have been Millers ... although on face value her argument seems to be based on words and not documentation; however, at this time I really do not want to go off on a tangent; I would rather focus on the Carpenter lineage ... bottom-line is that we still have:
1) Two women who were sisters, i.e., Ann and Mary ... we simply are not sure their last name was Miller.
2) Ann still was married to John Carpenter.
3) They probably met in Goshen (Orange County) where they were married; and as you pointed out, the 1790 Warwick (Orange County) US Census is probably confirmation that they were in Orange County in 1790.
4) John and Ann still ended up in Fairmont.

9634. Elizabeth Carpenter

Child per Larry:
5) Elizabeth (1799-1872), married William Baker in Monongalia County in 1819, 1870 Census indicates she was born in Virginia.

9637. Rhuanna or Rowena Carpenter

Child per Larry:
8) Rheuanna "Roanna" (1805-1844), married William Barnes in Monongalia County in 1826.

MARRIAGE:

9638. Lurenna "Lorenna" Carpenter

Child per Larry:
9) Lourenna (1811-1860), married Richard Harr in Monongalia County in 1827, 1850 census indicates she was born in Virginia, WV Death Index and WV Culture Death Registry indicates her parents were John and Ann Carpenter.

SPOUSE-DAUGHTER:  Information from Taylor County's County Clerk in a letter to Janet Gesas, Salt Lake City, received 23 January 1974.  It stated that "Lusanah" or "Susanah" Harr was the daughter of John and Ann Carpenter and was born in Monongalia County, Virginia.  (See files of  4th great grand daughter Janet Gesas Hornick, 5594 So. Lansing Ct., Englewood, Colorado 80111.  H-6, item #7).

9640. Phoebe or Phebe Carpenter

Child per Larry:
10) Phoebe (1813-1827)

PROBABLE RELATIONSHIPS: "Phebe" Stouffer and John "Stoufer" are listed in John Carpenter's Settlement.  Patty Carpenter Helms reported that Phoebe is probably the youngest sister of Ashman, David, Lourenna, etc.  See C-9. NOTE: No further proof has been found.  jgh - May 2006

Patty [Carpenter Helms] reported on May 10, 1998 that Phoebe Carpenter who married a John Stouffer (?sp.) signed off on the settlement of the estate.  Thus, it appears that she may have been the youngest daughter of John and Ann. See C-9.

4094. Peter Carpenter

In 1810 he removed from North Carolina to Tennessee in a county
that was then called Bedford, now Marshall.  He entered from the
Government and the brothers purchased together 240 acres of land
and called his homestead "Carpenter Hill";  named from a high
hill on the place which still retains the name of Carpenter Hill
and is one of the most prominent landmarks in that section of
the state.  The Ramseys were among the pioneers of Tennessee.
Margaret Ramsey was a cousin to James K. Polk and was born on an
adjoining plantation to that of the Polks on Duck River.  Peter
was at one time a large land owner and also owned many slaves.
In his old age he made his home with his son Samuel.  He was a
warm hearted and sympathetic man and generous to a fault.  He
was buried at Bloomfield, Iowa.2  SOUR S203
