Frank Bradner has a different spouse (George Edwards) and family listed. This is probably her second family.

Hannah CARPENTER 1791-1875 New York
Posted by: Constance Leaman (ID *****7001) Date: October 02, 2002 at 21:49:57

Hannah CARPENTER was born 21
January 1791 at Goshen, Chenango, N Y. She died 29 June, 1875 at Bath,
Steuben, N Y. She married on 21 May 1812 George Cunningham EDWARDS, a great
grandson of Jonathan Edwards.
They had 8 children: Mary w/o David McMaster; Jesse, h/o Emily Wilson
Sheetz; Clarissa, w/o James Dudley; Alexander, h/o Elizabeth McCurdy; Mason;
John, h/o 1) Rose Murphy, and 2) Constance Hunter; Sarah; and George, h/o
Sarah Sherwood.
They lived at Bath, NY, where he was a lawyer and the first judge of Steuben
County.
Who are her parents? She and George are my great great grandparents.

***********************************George Cunningham Edwards removed as spouse and reassigned to the Hannah Carpenter b. 21 Jan 1791. The reason is pending proof. See below. JRC Oct 7, 2002.
Dear John,
Thanks for your response. I think the naming conventions bear out the very strong possibility that Hannah was the daughter of Jesse Carpenter and Sarah/Sally Seely and the sister of Clarissa Carpenter. Now for some proof.
Connie
Dear Connie,
When you read the notes, you will find out that Frank Bradner states the his source has confused some of the Carpenters he submitted. I concur. I think this is one of those incidents.
Look at children, places and other similarities. Take a piece of paper and add up the pluses and minuses for each possibility. You will come to a conclusion but not proof.
This is the hard part. The proof. This means going back to the orginal sources and sorting the wheat from the chaff.
Enjoy the hunt!
And let me know what you conclude or prove!

I have been in touch with Frank Bradner quite a bit in the last several days.I believe that you are suggesting to me that Jesse Carpenter is more likely the father of my Hannah Carpenter than Benjamin Carpenter, and certainly there are some names that make one wonder, not to mention the birth and death date similarities of the 2 Hannahs.
My great grandfather, John Edwards, whose parents are George Cunningham Edwards and Hannah Carpenter has a sister Clarissa Roe Edwards who married James Rowe Dudley. And my great grandfather named his first daughter Clara Dudley Edwards, obviously after the Clarissa and Dudley connection. At the same time, there is a Clarissa Carpenter, daughter of Jesse, who married David Roe.
George Cunningham Edwards and Hannah Carpenter stayed in Bath, Steuben County, New York, to which they had moved by 1823, when Alexander Edwards was born. My great grandfather, John, was also born there, as was his first daughter. I am descended from his 2nd wife, Constance Lucretia Hunter and 2nd daughter, Mary Constance Edwards, my grandmother.
I really don't know what to make of this confusion. Perhaps you can set me straight.
Connie

Dear Constance,You have a small mystery and conflict of data. Compare the 2 briefs below. Each contains a Hannah Carpenter (*****). Look at the notes.
My guess is that George C. Edwards is matched with the wrong Hannah Carpenter. Your thoughts?

John ..... thanks so much for the ROM data. I finally got this straightened out with the help of 2 other great contributors. It seems my coauthor of the Bradner Genealogy had the Carpenters all messed up.
I DO have some problems with the ROM data though .....

Major Carpenter, "Pompey, was born in West Monroe, Oswego Co., N.Y., Dec. 7,
1822, a son of Nathaniel and Lucy (Gage) Carpenter, who with five other
brothers, settled in Cazenovia, Madison Co., in 1803. He passed to spirit life
in 1863, aged 86 years, his wife passed to spirit life in 1860, aged 72 years.
The grandparents were Ezekiel and Anna Carpenter of Connecticut. Ezekiel
was one of the first to resist the collection of church tax, it was connected
with the State tax,
at that time, thus beginning the separation of church and state, for it was
decided in his favor. The grandparents on the other's side were Elisha and
Olive(Underwood) Gage. His great-grandmother Underwood died on
the 4th of July, 1776. She had ten children, all of whom had large families;
her blood descendants number about 8,000 at this date. The subject of this
sketch came with his parents to Pompey, N.Y., in 1826; by occupation he is
a farmer and builder, has built six
houses to lease, in the last twenty-four years, in Cazenovia. In 1844 he
married Abigail Babcock, daughter of John W. and Amanda (Canfield) Babcock; he
passed to spirit life in 1875, aged 75 years, she passed to spirit life
in 1872, aged 88 years. Mr. and Mrs. Carpenter celebrated their golden wedding
on Aug. 18, 1894.
They have had seven children, three of which have passed from the mortal, the
other four are as follows: Jerome H., born May 28, 1848, he married Deetta
Brown. They have three children: Ernest, Ella and Major B.; Gilbert,
born Aug. 20, 1852; he married Josephine Lytle, they have one child, Jessie
May; Fannie, born on Oct. 21, 1858. She married Frank B. Taylor, a carriage painter, they have two children, Eva and Bayard; Austin B., born July 31, 1861. He married Anna Fitzgerald, they have two children, Jennie and Blanche. He has been deputy sheriff in Madison Co. for ten years. Mr. and Mrs. Carpenter have been life-long workers for temperance, having never used liquor or tobacco in any form.
He was formerly a Republican, is now a Prohibitionist, is in favor of Woman's Rights, or equal rights for all; is opposed to murder for murder, or capital punishment. He was a Universalist formerly but now believes in spirit communion as a demonstrated fact. Is a worker for all reforms, by the great principle of evolution. Progress by a survival of the fittest."

Our Early History - Page 5
...
The next in regular order is the family of Samuel Carpenter, Sr. from Luzerne County, Pennsylvania. In the fall of 1805 they came to Rush Creek, Fairfield county. where they remained until the spring of 1809, when they removed to our township and settled on the farm known as the Carpenter farm, now the home of the Hubbard boys. Upon this farm and at the home of S. Carpenter, Sr., was organized the first church, and within the walls of his dwelling was preached the first sermon within he bounds of our township. The first sermon the surviving members of the family can recollect was by a a Mr. Bacon, a minister traveling through the country on foot, carrying his saddle bags on hls arm, in 1810-11. He remained overnight with the Carpenters, and they collected the neighbors and he preached what they think the first sermon. Yet J. B Finley, in his history of .early Methodism, says he preached it the cabin of S Carpenter, Sr , the first sermon preached in the township which was late in 1810, or in the next year.
Yet it is possible it was only the first sermon preached by a minister on his regular work. Possibly Rev. Finley preached the the sermon, but it failed to make the same impression on the young members of the family. Mr. Carpenter erected a brick residence in 1821, which was the first brick house its the township. He died March 1834. in his 81st year. His son, Rev. Samuel Carpenter, settled on the farm adjoining his feather's, now the home of his son, Elnathan and erected a brick residence in the year 1827, which is the oldest brick building standing is the township.
He was Married to (Page 6) Mercy Correll on the 21st day of December 1809 by Rev. T. Harris, of Granville, and had they been married in the township would have been the first, but though both had been living in the township. And immediately after marriage made this their home. They were married at the bride's mother's in Granville, near the old College ground. Hence the marriage of Gaeon Correll to Miss Julia Lobdell on July 17th, 1810 was the first marriage in the Township. Rev. S. Carpenter died in August 1861, aged 78 years.
Of the Carpenter family who came to the township in 1809 there are two surviving members, Mrs. smith and Mrs. Beaumont....................
