Jonathan S. Porter

GRAVE:
http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=64681401
Jonathan S Porter
Birth:  Mar., 1822
Berkshire County
Massachusetts, USA
Death:  Jan. 19, 1918
Ellenville
Ulster County
New York, USA

The death of Jonathan S. Porter at the home of his son, Albert V. Porter, on Canal street, Ellenville, Saturday morning at 8 o'clock, removes a very old citizen from the town, for had he lived until March he would have reach 96 years. Mr. Porter was born in the Berkshires in Massachusetts and came to reside in Ellenville when a young man and was employed at the old lead mine which was at that time one of the village's chief industries. On April 19, 1846, he was united in marriage with Sarah Van Dover, daughter of Albert Van Dover and Eliza Carpenter, his wife. The Rev. S. B. Ayres, of the Reformed Church, performed the ceremony. To this union were born ten children, two girls and eight sons, four of whom survive: Saul T., of Syracuse, Albert, John and Richard of Ellenville. Mr. and Mrs. Porter were an ideal devoted couple and were spared to each other until death claimed the devoted wife on April 29, 1914. At the time of her death and since Mr. Porter has resided with his son and family, who have been devoted in the care of this venerable father – a long life ended. Up until a year or two deceased was able to go out upon the street and exchange friendly greetings with friends. He was active in the early history of the village and was a man of bright intellect, well read in history not confined alone to state but national affairs, a man devoted to home and family, a kind neighbor and a good friend, and has been kept in mind by many to whom he and his good wife were so kind in sickness and sorrow, cheering many aching hearts. He lived a good live and has gone to meet its reward. The funeral was held from the son's home Monday afternoon. The four sons were present at the services, also the devoted granddaughter, Miss Sadie E. Porter, of Brooklyn, was called home. The service was conducted by Rev. Joseph E. Appley, of the M. E. Church and interment made in the family plot in the Ellenville Cemetery.

Mr. Porter was a native of New Bedford, Mass., and when a child of eight years removed with his parents to Lumberland, Pa., where he grew to manhood, his ancestors owning at one time a large tract of land where the city of Kingston, Pa., now stands.

At the age of eighteen he came to Ellenville, and for quite a term of years followed the occupation of a tanner, residing the remainder of his long life in this village. When a young man he was married to Sarah Van Dover of this place who died four years ago, after a long and happy married life of 69 years.

They reared a family of ten children, four of whom survive: Albert V., John and Richard of Ellenville, and Saul Porter, of Syracuse.

Mr. Porter was the oldest member of the Methodist Episcopal Church and a man who always had a kind word for every one with whom he came in contact, making many friends during his long life.

The funeral was held Monday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, from the home of the son, Albert V. Porter. Rev. J. E. Appley of the M. E. Church conducted the services. Interment in the Ellenville cemetery at the convenience of the family.

4451. Samuel B. Carpenter

Is this the same Samuel as RIN 91994? NO!  DIfferent parents. The Samuel Carpenter-47395 is confused with this Samuel also.  He also has different parents.

NAME: I can not find where his middle name is Bigelow. I found 1 census (1830) where the middle initial is E.
Per the Van Hoosear Genealogy, Fourth Generation, page 39, he married Antoinette Maria Jelliff in 1824 at Thunder Hill, Sullivan, NY.  His name is just Samuel Carpenter, son of Benjamin, born at Milton, NY March 10, 1803.  Death record has Samuel B. Carpenter.

CHILDREN:  Per the Van Hoosear Genealogy, (See wife's notes) 7 children born in NY before move to Nauvoo, IL in May of 1839 arriving about the middle of June. By July they moved to Olive Green, about 2 miles from Navooo where he bought a 100 acre farm.  He resided there until 1846 where 3 more children (Abigail, Nancy and Benjamin) were born. The eight child died in the fall of 1844 or maybe at Council Bluffs about 1847/1848.  Nancy the tenth child died as an infant either in 1845 or 1846.   After his wife died, 7 children remained. (?)  In the spring of 1846 he sold his farm and moved west toward Fort Madison toward Council Bluffs.  In September of 1846 he married his second wife, Clarissa Tuttle (possibly a married name) and they started westward.  About 40 miles west of Council Bluff he died on or near the bank of the Missouri river and was buried.

NOTE:  It is not known if his body was later transfered to the Mormon Pioneer Cemetery or it the plaque represents him only in spirit.  See DEATH: below.

Rhoda, Julia A, Elizabeth and Antoinette decided to turn back.  The story is listed on page 40 of the Van Hoosear genealogy book.   Later, Rhoda Ann (later she married a Mance) left Council Bluffs and went to Missouri to retrieve Lydia and arrived back in Council Bluffs in May of 1847.  Then she went and found her brother Benjamin "Bennie" who was living with Jerome Benson and his family.   While in Council Bluffs the daughters wrote to their grandmother Misner requesting help to return to New York.  Their Uncle Benjamin Carpenter went to Council Bluffs and returned them home to New York.

CHILD: Calvin not listed as a child - unknown relationship if any.

A Typical Wedding

This was a typical wedding of those days full and jollity for several days and then the young couple settled down to the serious business of life. At the weddings the jokes at times were practical as in the case of the wedding of John D. Carpenter, great grandfather of Dr. C. N. Skinner. Mr. Carpenter was comparatively short in statute but what he lacked in height was made up in physical vigor and grit and when he and the bride took their places before the minister for the wedding ceremony a guest placed a sheet of paper on the floor for the groom to stand on, to equalize the height of the pair, the bride by -the-way, being about half a head taller. The wag made a serious error for the groom insisted on stopping the ceremony until he walloped the man who had insulted him. Friends intervened, the joker apologized and a half hour later the wedding went on.

These people, whose immediate ancestors had suffered so terribly from the Indian raids in the valley and many had fought in the war of the Revolution, were of the "Early to bed and early to rise etc." class and this wise saying of Poor Richard proved true with them for they were physically strong and active, wealthy considering their wants, and their business judgment was unexcelled.

They were unanimous in opinion for the proprieties and ceremonials. The minister was a most revered gentleman and at his pastoral visits all the members of the household gathered to give grave but most courteous greeting to the dominie, to hear a portion of the Scriptures read and the prayer invoking God's blessing on that household. A part of the ceremony, not to be overlooked was the offering of cake and wine or whiskey to the Dominie. I am speaking now of the days of 80 to 100 years ago.

After the War of 1812-14 … The Methodists living in the vicinity at that time were few. Among them were Joseph Chattle and a Mr. Carpenter , at Carpenter’s Point …
In 1832 a revival occurred, and John D. Carpenter (RIN 60480), with several members of his family, were converted and joined the society. Mr. Carpenter at once became a very active worker. He organized a Sabbath-school, acting as superintendent himself, and furnishing books, etc., for the school, which met first at the house of his father, Benjamin Carpenter, near

Sometime in 1832, Mr. Best removed to Butler’s Lock, near Mongaup, and Mr. Carpenter took charge of the class. We find the numbers had largely increased, …

Tri-States Rock.
Considerable interest attaches to this solid land-mark. The boundary lines of three States-New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania-intersect at this point. By standing over the copper bolt sunk in the rock a person may be in the three States at the same instant. The rock is at the extreme point of the tongue of land lying between the Delaware and the Neversink, at the mouth of the latter. The whole formation is rocky, and will stand the wear of the floods for centuries to come as it has for centuries past. Visitors will find the rock by an easy walk from Port Jervis, entering the gate of Laurel Grove Cemetery and traversing its quiet paths.
The well-known name, Carpenter's Point, arose from the early settlement of the Carpenter family upon the opposite shore of the Neversink. The old homestead was the present Coonrad Snyder place. The early dwelling-house, and the pioneer store in connection with it, were upon the site of the present residence. The early burials of the Carpenter family were in the orchard upon this place. After the opening of Laurel Grove Cemetery, (in 1856 RIN 60480) Mr. John D. Carpenter purchased a lot near to the extreme point. The remains were removed to this lot. Carpenter's Point is therefore now rightly named in a double sense, both of settlement and burial.
The old ferry upon the turnpike from New-burgh to Milford crossed the Delaware at this point. The exact position of the Tri-States Rock as determined by officers of the United States Coast Survey, given in a report bearing date May 14, 1874, is the following: Latitude, 41° 21' 22.63"; longitude, 74°41’ 40.70’’; azimuth of boundary line, 300° 4. (See annual report of the State geologist of New Jersey for 1874.)

> Hello Carpenters:
> I have recently found intriguing reference to three Carpenters in Sullivan
> County NY in the early 1800s.   John Willard Johnston's Reminiscences says
> the tax roll of Town of Lumberland in 1816 lists a James Carpenter, John
> Carpenter, and Joseph Carpenter.  A nearby passage says James was also

REPLY:
Hello Robin,
The John Carpenter appears to be RIN 21082 in the CE CD 2001.  He was born 6 Feb 1796 in Minisink, Orange, NY.
His son Levi Carpenter-21099 is listed in the 1870 Census for Lumberland, Sullvan, NY.  His father is Benjamin Carpenter-12760 and is number 309 in the Carpenter Memorial.  Page 84.  His family is on page 156 (#134).  His grandfather is Col. Solomon Carpenter-4738 who is Number 75 in the Carpenter Memorial on Page 61.
The above John Carpenter-21082 had a brother named James b. 6 April 1805 in Minisink.  He would have been 11 in 1816.
The above John Carpenter-21082 had an Uncle James Carpenter-12759 b. 1752 in Goshen, Orange, NY d. April 1817.
(NOTE:  This would match with, "James was also assessed in 1814, but not in 1818."
James Carpenter-12759 had a son named James Carpenter-21074 b. 1788 in Goshen, Orange, NY but nothing more is known about him.
I found only 1 of Col. Solomon Carpenter's descendants named Joesph that even came close to being alive at the right time.  This is Joseph S. Carpenter-23416 b. 19 May 1815 in Amity, Orange, NY who was son of Solomon Carpenter-23412 b. 24 March 1768.

OTHER POSSIBILES Joseph Carpenters  ...
I have a Joseph Carpenter-26996 b. abt 1776 in Newburgh, Orange, NY who is Number 331 in the book "The Carpenter Family in America" by Daniel H. Carpenter, 1901.No family listed.   Probably settled in Palmyra, NY.

I have a Joseph Carpenter-27042 b. abt 1765 in Newburgh, Orange, NY who is Number 333 in the book "The Carpenter Family in America" by Daniel H. Carpenter, 1901.  No family listed.  He died in New York City, unmarried.

I have a Joseph Carpenter-49408 b. 15 Dec 1790 in Goshen, Orange, NY.  E-MAIL: Tue, 27 Jun 2000 From: "Marcia Buffett" To: "John R. Carpenter" CC: "Ken Warkentine"
Dear John and Ken:
Do either of you have anything on a Joseph C. Carpenter of Northville? He had a daughter Libbie who was married on March 31, 1880 to Harmon Fisher a barber in Northville. Thanks, Marcia
NOTE: This Joseph had a sister named Rebecca whose first husband died in Northville.  Was the Joseph C. above a descendant of this Joseph?

I have a Joseph Carpenter-88893 b. 30 Sep 1783 in Chester, Orange, NY d. 21 May 1829 in Goshen, Orange, NY. He was the son of Jesse Carpenter-2688 who was Number 340 in the Carpenter Memorial on page 88.

I hope this helps.
