George W. was one of the first men of Groton, N.Y., socially,
financially and morally. He owned the Groton Hotel and other
real estate in the town and was respected and loved by all who
knew him. His sudden death was caused by being struck on the
head by a falling limb of a tree in the woods near Dryden, where
he had some men at work.2 SOUR S203
3 TEXT pg 322
When Mr. Green died she went to Ithaca, N.Y., in which place her
daughter Mrs. Eva C. Magoris resided.
Caleb W. was the son of James and Susan C. (Andrews) Clark, by
trade a harness and shoemaker; he was in the carriage business
in Groton; he removed from Groton to Rochester, N.Y., and
accepted a position as foreman of the shoe department of the
House of Refuge, under his brother-in-law C. Hitchcock. He
removed to Cincinnati when Mr. Hitchcock took the contract and
manufactured for the wholesale shoe business. Rhoda was the
youngest of 11 children and the second wife of Caleb W. Clark
and the mother of three children. After living in Groton and
Rochester and moving to Cincinnati,,OH, about 1863, Mrs.
Carpenter became troubled with a heart difficulty from which she
never recovered. Her death resulted from the effect of a fall by
which her right side was paralyzed. Mrs. Carpenter was
buried by the side of her youngest child in Spring Grove
cemetery, Cincinnati,,OH. She was a woman of extraordinary
good qualities and was esteemed and respected by all who knew
her; she was a member of the Presbyterian church at Cincinnati.CINCINNATI,,OH, Aug. 15, 1879.
MR. CARPENTER:
Dear Sir -Your postal of the 12th inst. is received. I did not
know of your sickness, and am pleased to know that you are
recovering. I have frequently seen your name in New England
Genealogical Register, and it is a great pleasure to address one
who has taken so much interest in his family, and devoted so
much time and expense to benefit those belonging to the present
and future generations of the Carpenter family. Burke says,
Those who treasure the memory of their ancestors should be
remembered `and there is no doubt in my mind, that you, while
living have built your own monument, which I hope will ever be
regarded as great a work as that achieved by any whose names you
will record. I have had a little experience in glancing over old
records and books, but I doubt whether with nearly two years
occasional reading I have ever acquired more than an idea of the
vast amount of trouble and work that you have been too. There is
one consolation in knowing that while the study is laborious, at
the same time it is not void of pleasure. In January of 1875,
my mother, Rhoda (Carpenter) Clark died, and since that time I
have always felt a desire to know who were her ancestors. During
her life-time I did not question her about any of my relations
on her side, and then did not know the name of my grandfather.
I have since been able to trace the line back to William, of
Weymouth who came in the "Bevis" in 1633, and from the time of
my great.grandfather Elisha Carpenter, I have commenced forming
a record of the family which I expect will, in afew months, be complete down to the present generation; with
the names of those who are interested. with descendants
complete, the record will contain nearly 400 souls. These
records of the different families which are now being written
and collected for me, will (when I have seen that they are all
gathered and complete,) be forwarded to my cousin Henry Shaver,
who has promised to correct and publish them in tile form of a
pamphlet.Your cousin,
WILL C. CLARK."
Mr. Clark very kindly gave his collections to the compiler to
take there from what was needed to make the record of that
branch of the family complete who had emigrated west, showing a
great interest in other branches and the perfection of the work.2 SOUR S203

Dear Mr. Carpenter:
I seek information about Solon Carpenter (1829-1923) of Seekonk, Masaachusetts. I have the reference from Amos Carpenter _A Geneological History_ (1898). Can you point me to any more recent work that includes this branch?

MORE:
Kind thanks for sending this information about the Solon Carpenter who built my house about 1875. From the land evidence records and the probate records at the Bristol County Courthouse in Taunton, Mass., I can add the
following:
Bristol County Land Evidence vol. 735 page 396:
A real estate transaction of July 7, 1922 reveals that Solon Carpenter owns the home place with his wife Carroline F. S. Carpenter. This identifies the name of his second wife.
Bristol County Probate Court Will Book docket file 50513:
Probate documents dated June 22, 1923, name Davis Carpenter of Brown, New York, as the executor of his late father's estate. The identifies the month and an approximate day of death for Solomon (he died at age 93) and locates Davis Carpenter as living in New York at the time of his father's death. At his father's death Davis Carpetner inherits all of his father's property outright while Caroline Carpenter is given life estate. This reveals that Caroline outlived Solon.
Bristol County Land Evidence vol. 753 page 122:
On September 17, 1924, Davis Carpenter of Bronx, New York, sells the Solon Carpenter farm outside the family. This concludes the ownership of land in Seekonk by that branch of the family.
When I find their gravestones I'll send along photographs.
