Birth: 9 May 1807 Adams, Berkshire County, Massachusetts, USA
Death: 5 Mar 1897 (aged 89) Rockton, Winnebago County, Illinois, USA
Burial: Rockton Township Cemetery, Rockton, Winnebago County, Illinois, USA
Memorial #: 27571359
Bio:
He was the ninth of eleven children born to Nathaniel and Philura (Holcomb) Carpenter. He married at Saratoga County, New York 7 March 1836 to Julia M. Pettibone, and they were the parents of two sons.
Immediately after their marriage they came to Rockton, arriving on July 15th, accompanied by his father and some of his siblings.
On 20 April 1837, he was one of the first jurors selected for Winnebago County commissioner's court, and received 75 cents a day for his services. He served as township supervisor 1867-70 and 1873-75. He was President of the Board of Village Trustees from 1873. He served several times as trustee for the Congregational church, was a deacon for many years, and was superintendent of the Sunday school.
He lived on a farm west of the river from 1836 to 1865. When his son Luman Carpenter returned from the war, he bought a home for him in the village where he resided the remainder of his life.
He, however, continued to retain a 160-acre farm. He and his wife spent the winter of 1887-88 in California. During the last years of his life, Mr. and Mrs. H. Knutson resided with him and his wife to see that they were properly cared for.

Rockton Herald, Thursday 31 January 1901
Last Sunday morning the news was passed from mouth to mouth that Dr. Waite and Mrs. Carpenter had breathed their last the evening before, the former at 8:30 and the latter at 8:20. although the passing of both had not been unexpected it cast a gloom over the entire community, for the early settlers are so rapidly passing away that soon "the place that knows them shall know them no more," and the men and women who endured the hardships incident to making this "wilderness blossom like the rose" will be only a memory to those who are now enjoying the fruit of their labors.
Julia Pettibone was born in St. Lawrence Co., N.Y., July 15, 1814, and was married to David Carpenter Mar. 7, 1836. Starting west the same year they arrived here July 15; thus she was the first white woman to enter the new settlement that is now the town of Rockton.
For three months she stood the loneliness and fear of Indians, and thought she could not endure it any longer, when they were joined by her father, Dea. Luman Pettibone, and his family.
For 29 years Mr. and Mrs. Carpenter lived on the farm, west of the river which he secured of the government, at which time they moved into the house in the village in which they spent the remainder of their days.
Mrs. Carpenter was a charter member of the Congregational church and always active in all church work until age and failing health kept her at home.
For a number of years Mr. and Mrs. H. Knutson have taken care of the aged couple so that they did not lack for kind attention during the last years of their life.
The funeral was held as her late home last Monday afternoon, the service being conducted by Rev. T.B. Thompson ex-pastor of the Cong'l church and all that was moral was laid to rest by the side of her husband who had preceded her to the heavenly home about four years ago.
Among the floral tributes to Mrs. Carpenter's memory was a design in carnations from the ladies of the Working Band of which she was a charter member.

CIVIL WAR ERA Death. Did he serve in the Civil War?
Number 3358 in the Carpenter Memorial on page 387. No family listed.
The compiler of the above book inserts the following . . . Notice from a
newspaper clipping which he thinks refers to this Lyman Carpenter. "A
commercial traveler from San Francisco named Lyman Carpenter recently missing
his trail on a mountain in Mendocino county (CA) and despairing of finding his
way out, committed suicide to avoid the sufferings of a lingering death. This
is the statement which he made in a letter that has since been found, giving
directions for the settlement of his affairs. His body was found in a river
with a stone tied to it and a bullet wound in the head. The package contained
the letter also embraced his account books and valuables." No date on
clipping, but believed to be about 1866.
Per the Carpenter Memorial Lyman went to Groton, NY as a physician. No family
listed. Ancestral File has family data.CENSUS: 1830 US Census

E-MAIL: 18 May 2003
Good Job, Jim!1830 US Census of Fayette county, IN:
Lyman 2 under 5, 2 5-10, 1 30-40 males / female 1 20-30
John 1 under 5, 1 15-20, 2 20-30 males / females 2 under 5, 1 5-10, 2 20-30GOOD NEWS ... Fayette county, Indiana with a Lyman Carpenter comes back as a match!
Dr. Lyman Carpenter born 5 Oct 1799 Savoy,, MA was in Connersville from about 1822 to 1831. He later moved to Everton about 1832. His father was named Ezra and his grandfather was an Ezra.I note that Lyman's children born before 1830 are born 1822, 1824, 1826 & 1828. This is an exact match with the 1830 US Census.
...
Now the BAD news ...Lyman does not have a brother named John. While there is room for a John in the family (see attached file), he is not listed. The father Ezra is number 1562 on page 230 in the CARPENTER MEMORIAL. His family on page 387 (#520). While Ezra moved from MA to NY to points west, John is not listed.
None of his siblings have a son named John. Lyman has a son named John but this is probably because his wife's father was named John.
The naming sequence sometimes used for male children in this time period was:
1st son - father's father
2nd son - mother's father
3rd son - father
4th son - father's oldest brotherLyman's male children are ...
Ambrose ?
Ezra Lyman's father & grandfather
Horace Lyman's brother - b. 1805
John Wife's fatherSO it appears that John & Lyman are not siblings.
SO who was this John Carpenter? I think he was your John Carpenter born abt 1802 in NY.
You may want to see what type of impact John Carpenter had, or what other Carpenters were in Fayette county during this time period. It becomes a process of elimination.

John,
I found some new information on my John Carpenter born 1802 in New York. Indiana, FAYETTE, Roll 26 Book 1, Page 47a shows John Carpenter and on
Indiana, FAYETTE, Roll 26 Book 1, Page 44a the 1830 census records shows Lyman Carpenter. We know that John Carpenter was in Indiana. That is where Dennis and Jane Carpenter were born. Dennis in 1832 and Jane in 1837.
Is this just a coincidence? I think there may be a connection. Lyman Carpenter was born in 1799 in Massachusetts and John Born 1802 in New York. This is the closest lead I have come across in connecting John Carpenter with anyone. Check out the attached and let me know what you think.
Best Regards,
Jim Carpenter

And upon Roswell's death his parents had no source of income. As always.. anyone wanting a copy of these records just drop me a line and I will be happy to send you the scanned records. I have them scanned in JPG format, approx 60 pages
