http://www.rootsweb.com/~nyliving/database/springwater.htm
EARLY HISTORY OF THE TOWN OF SPRINGWATER, LIVINGSTON COUNTY, NY
BY ORSON WALBRIDGE  1887.
"Benjamin Carpenter came from Cayuga county in 1817 with all his
family of sons and daughters, wife and mother. The old
lady grandmother, or little granny as she was called
by the children, was a little old woman who lived to a
remarkable age, and was near one hundred years
when she died. One of the sons of Willis Carpenter was
married to Electa Barnes, before he came to
Springwater and they had a large family of children. I
will give their names: First, Almira, Roxey, John,
William, Serril S. , Clark B. , Willis Jr. , Rowland,
Chancey, Ira, Electa and Jane, some of whom arc still
living -here. Another son, Benjamin Jr. , married a
daughter of Simeon King after he came here and raised
a family, one of whom is Mrs. Jesse Farley. One other
son, Amos, married a daughter of Noah Crandle
and removed west. One daughter, Polly, married Lyman
Herrick, another daughter Elsie married Schuyler
Moses and moved to Rochester."
Another part has ...
"I will now give a short description of the north village.
There were a few buildings clustered about the
corners. 1st, Jonathan Lawrence's house and barn, John
Wiley's house and shop, David Lather's house
and tannery, T. L. Spaffard's tavern, and a house where
Serril S. Carpenter lives."
Another part has ...
"Joseph Carpenter lived on the farm where Edwin
Carpenter now lives. He and his wife both died there a
number of years since. They left tine son Lucian B.
Carpenter who soon after died leaving two sons. Edwin and
Frank.   Jesse Farley came to Springwater
about 1816, and settled on the farm on which Patrick Doil
now lives, with his family consisting of a wife
and six children, two sons and four daughters. Horace
amid Harvey mire both dead: Polly' married George
Hewett. Minerva married Alva S. Wheaton, and Betsey
married Harvey Johnson. Mrs. Johnson is the only
surviving daughter. About 1825, Mrs. Jesse Fancy died,
and in 1826 he married the widow Abijah
Barnes, with whom he lived for a number of years, and
until her death in 1852. About the time of his
second marriage he moved to the farm where Henry Clapp
now lives, and resided there for a number of
years, after which he sold the farm to his son, Harvey,
and came to the valley, where his second wife died,
and in process of time he married Betsey Carpenter who is
still living. The result of this marriage was one
son, George Farley, who is now living at the south end of
the valley with his mother. Jesse Fancy died, and
was buried September 11, 1870."
Another part has ...
"I will now return to Marvin's corners. On the north-east
corner in an early day we find Henry J. Niles. He
was not only a farmer, but was a carpenter by trade. He
built many of the first frame buildings here. Some
of them are still left as momentos of olden times. I
first remember of his building a barn for David Goff on
William Brewer's south farm. This was in 1820 or 1821.
The old barn Is still there, and to all appearances
will last for many years. Another barn of his building is
now on the old Joad Gillet farm, on the road to
Wayland. Mr. Niles married a widow Carpenter who had
three children. The oldest, Matilda, married
Ezra Grover, and went west. She is still living. The
next, Thirsa, is Mrs. Bullard. She is now living here and
is well known by all. One son, Serril, died here a few
years since. Mr. Niles and wife have both died and
gone to their rest. They had four children, two sons and
two daughters. One son, henry, died young; the
other son, James L. Niles, is now living in this village.
Lucy married John Phillips and is now living in
Michigan. Hannah married C. D. Jones. She died a number
of years since. James L. Niles still owns the
old farm where he resided until about three years since,
when he removed to the village, He married a
daughter of Curtice W. Marvin and has three children, two
sons and one daughter, all living. One of the
sons, H. J. Niles, is now editor and proprietor of the
Springwater Enterprise. Nathaniel W. Niles, a
brother of Henry J., also came here in an early day and
lived with his brother. He was a soldier in the war
of 1812, and was taken prisoner and confined in an
English prison ship, and taken to England and there
kept as prisoner until the close of the war, when he was
sent home. He lived for many years, the last of his
time in the village of Dansville, where he died but a few
years since at a good old age."
Another part ...
"I recollect of cutting wheat for Wells Chamberlin with a cradle on the west
part of what is now A. G. Marvin's farm, when at the same
time there were other men cutting with sickle
on the steepest part of the field. This was in 1827 or
'28, and the first crop ever raised upon said field. I
also cradled a piece of wheat for Willis Carpenter the
same year on the field east of Nelson F. Snyder's
house. I was then but eighteen or nineteen years old.
After cradles came into general use the most of the
grain was cut by them for a number of years, and until
within ten or fifteen years past, when reapers began
to take the place of cradles and horse power was used in
place of man power for cutting; ..."

NOTE:
His mother's will indicated he was living in Rutland, VT in 1876.
Was this the Joseph listed below?

MARRIAGES:
Marriages by Rev. Joseph F. Spier:
Joseph C. Carpenter of Hope,Hamilton,NY to Miss Mary Lobdell at the bride's
parents in Northampton on Dec 31, 1840.
MORE:
BUT then I also have a J. C. Carpenter died Dec. 8, 1884 age 65 (born 1819)
buried in Prosepct Hill Cem., Northville, NY
and his wife Mary died July 5, 1873 age 51 (born 1822).
J.W. Carpenter son of J.C. and Mary 1854 -1884 30 yrs. old. same cem.
Methodist Church Northville: Joseph C. Carpenter, married Mary Lobdell Dec.
31, 1840.
I'm confused as to who this Mary Ann Carpenter is. She is listed in the
1850 census of Hope, Hamilton Co., NY as head of household and age 36 (born
1814 in Ireland) with children: Charles 13, John 11 (1839), Laura 9,
William 8 (1842), and Mary Ann 2.
There is ANOTHER John W. who is the son of Samuel B. Carpenter and Julia
Ann. He was born in 1845 and appears in the 1850 census Hope, Hamilton Co.,
with parents Sam and Julia and a sister Harriet A. born 1849.
Does this Will fit into your line somewhere ?:
Will written April 20, 1786 probated Feb 26, 1787. Joseph Carpenter of
Jericho, Osterbay Township, Queens Co. wife Elizabeth daugthers Elizabeth
and Abigail Cook; sons Thomas, Joseph, Benjamin and Henry; grandchildren
Freelove dau. of son Isaac, Joseph son of son-in-law William Cook. Land in
Limington Township, Vermont and other real estate.
I didn't see a death date that would match the will, nor a William Cook, so
I've assumed that this is from another line. I guess it was the "Vermont
realestate" and the names Joseph and Benjamin that grabbed my interest.

7124. Reuben S. Carpenter

BIRTH:
Town of Hope was originally in Montgomery Co. NY. It became Hamilton
County in the early 1800's.
It is at 43175N X 0741121W in the Adirondack Mountains.

BURIAL: Fyler Community Cemetery, Chittenango, NY.

DEATH: July 1, 1898 Madison County Times Obituary: Reuben S. Carpenter.
He d. at his home 3/4 of a mile north of Chittenango  Stn. at about 1
on Sunday last. Mr C. was born in the town of Hope, Montgomery Co.
NY, Aug 6, 1821. At the age of 19 he purchased his time from his
father and started in business for himself. He was a
stone cutter by trade and went to work for the state on the Black River
Canal, where he worked about a year. Then he removed to Orwell,
Oswego county where he remained about 2 years. While at Orwell he was
married to Miss. Hannah Pennock.(a sister of the late Ebenezer Pennock).
From Orwell he removed to Three River Point where he resided about a
year, removing from that place to Oak Hill. Here Mr. Carpenter was
employed by Capt. Cady, one of the old pioneers of this town. When the
Erie Canal was enlarged Mr. Carpenter removed to Bolivar where he had
charge of the work of obtaining stone for the bridge and culvert at
that place. From Bolivar he removed to his late residence north of
Chittenango Station and lived there until the time of his death.
The "Squire" as Mr. C. was known hereabouts was in early life a
Democrat, but became a Republican at the formation of that party and
has since been an active member. Some years ago (1880)
he was elected Justice of Peace which was the only office he ever held.
About 2 years ago he was troubled with a complication of lung and
kidney trouble which with the infirmities of age, proved too much for
his naturally strong constitution.
The Squire will be missed much about the Station where he was a
familiar figure. The immediate vicinity of the "Station" at the time
he came here was practically an unbroken forest and Mr. C's
reminiscences of the early days of his residence were very
interesting. In 1863 Mr. C. went to the state of Ohio,
remaining in that state until 1864, when he was employed by the U.S.
Gov't as foreman (with the rank of Cap't) in the Gov't ship yards at
Chattanooga, Tenn., where he remained until the close of the war,
since which time he has followed the business of carpenter and builder.
Mr. C. was the father of 8 , 5 of whom, George W. Carpenter, Mrs.
Mathew Shapley, Mrs. George Bender, Mrs. Myron Olmstead and William E.
Carpenter together with his wife and a brother Geo. H. Carpenter of
Sheboygan Wisc survive him. The funeral which took place Tues at the
Free Methodist Church was largely attended. Rev E.D. Carpenter of Rome
officiating. Interment was made at the Fyler Settlement.
NB: Actually there were 6 surviving children. The sixth was Harriet.
Francelia Carpenter Draper who resided at Oconto Nebraska at the time.
Joseph Clark Carpenter was the first of nine children. He died just
after his first birthday.
