Descendants of William Carpenters of the Bevis (1638) Carpenter Cousins Encyclopedia of Carpenters - 2023 Update

Notes

7598. Sylvanus Carpenter

Information on Sylvanus obtained from Art Carpenter 2/96.  Married twice, 1)
Charlotte Pierce, ; 2) Alvira Bennett.

This family line submitted by John E. Proctor (brn 1933) of Stillwell KS 4/96
His father is believed to be either Jeremiah, Joseph or Copeland Carpenter
who were sons of Jeremiah Carpenter (b. 1760) grandsons of Timothy Carpenter.
He is put with Joseph until further information can be gathered.
Temporary connection 4/96 jrc. See next.
Joseph's will found - no Sylvanus listed as child. Jeremiah some information
found but no Sylvanus.  So by default, now listed with Copeland until further
information can be gathered. John Laird believes he should be in this generation
but where is unknown.  1/99 jrc.
NOTE: Cemetery records indicate Henry Pierce as the only child?
WOW! Were we wrong!  See E-MAIL below.  JRC May 2002

Hello:
I am a new subscriber to the Carpenter mailing list and joined this group
because it appears most are serious Genealogists.
I, as well as other members of my wife's family,  have been researching
our branch of the Carpenter tree for some time and have hit the
proverbial brick wall. I have recently had the privilege to work  with
some of your members in Rhode Island, who have given me a lot of support
in trying to locate the ancestors of one Benjamine Carpenter. This
gentleman's family has been vary allusive, and I now need your help.
The facts as we have them today are :
Benjamin Carpenter was born Abt. 1764 in Coventry, Kent County, RI and
died September 18, 1840 in South Kingstown, Washington County, RI.  He
married Freelove Bailey abt 1795, daughter of Samuel Bailey and Robe
Webb. She was Born January 5, 1778 in Coventry, Kent County, RI. Benjamin
was buried in  thePerryville Church Cemetery, South Kingstown, Washington
County, RI according to the Rhode Island Cemetery Transcription Project.
Benjamine and Freelove had nine children, all born in South Kingstown, as
follows:
1. Sarah b. abt 1798, m. (unknown) Caswell
2. Peleg b. October 30, 1800, d. August 21,1865 in Clinton Twp. Wyoming
County, PA, m. Lydia Colvin.
3. George b. Abt 1801
4. Oliver b. Abt. 1803, m. Selinda White Abt. 1825
5. William b. Abt 1804
6. Mary b. Abt 1805
7. Samuel b. Abt 1807
8. Freelove b. Abt. 1809, m. John Bailey
9. Benjamin (possibly Benjamen) b. Abt 1813
Benjamine appears in the 1790  census of South Kingstown along with
severial other Carpenter Head  of Households by name:  Ephraim, James,
Jeremiah, Jeremiah Jun., another Jeremiah Jun., Jonathan, Joseph, another
Joseph, Stephen, and Thomas.
In the 1800 census Benjamin appears again with james, Jeremiah and his
son Jeremiah Jun., Stephen, Thomas, and a new individual one Solomon
Carpenter.
It is believed that Benjamin is a decedent of William of Rehoboth,MA but
may in fact be the descendants of Samuel who started the third Carpenter
branch in Pennsylvania, the son of John the Sheriff,  of Robert, of
Stephen,  of Robert,  of William the son of William of Homme, thus
accounting for why Benjamin's children moved to Clinton Twp, Wyoming
County, PA after his died in 1840.
Any assistance would be appreciated

Unfortunately, there are two Benjamins at work here.  The one who was
buried in the Perryville Church Cemetery having died in 1840 was the
husband of Thankful Carpenter who died in 1826 and was also buried
there, as you can discover by looking in the same database (the
relationships do not appear in the on-line index, though, so you have to
go to RI or find someone there to look such things up).  Actually, the
graves of this pair were moved to the Perryville Church Cemetery
sometime after 1880, according to a note in the database (they were
originally buried at the Carpenter homestead).  The estimated birth in
1764 goes along with the gravestone, which records Benjamin's age at
death as 76.  The other Benjamin, whose wife was named Freelove, could
have been born a bit later, as some other posters have suggested.
As for the vital records in South Kingstown, forget it.  They were very
poorly kept in the early 1800's, and neither Benjamin's family appears
in these records.
sigh...

I think the census records also belong to the Benjamin who died in 1840
and whose wife was named Thankful.  The 1800 tally, in particular, shows
four small children in the household, and the woman was over 26 years
old (i.e., not Freelove who was born in 1778).  If there is no other
evidence supporting the notion that Benjamin and Freelove had their
children in South Kingstown, I think you may need to widen the net a bit.

MORE:
Mon, 9 Oct 2000 From: Jack A Schoedinger
I have , for some time, been looking for the ancestors of one Benjamin
Carpenter b. Abt. 1775 in Coventry, Rhode Island. I recently found that
after his wife,  Freelove Baily, gave birth to their first child, they
relocated ( Abt. 1801) to Clinton Twp, Wyoming County, Pennsylvania
(around Factoryville). Eventually, the family spread into Lackawanna
County and , pretty much remained there. In reviewing information about
this area I found there was a "Carpenter Town", with a "Carpenter
Cemetery" in Lackawanna County, PA east of Dalton. The cemetery is
located near the intersection of rt. 524 and 347 near highway 81.
Can any body help me with information about the town and/or who is buried
in the cemetery.

NOTE:
Wyoming County, Pennsylvania was created on April 4, 1842 from part of Luzerne County, and named for the Wyoming Valley.  Wyoming is derived from an Indian word meaning “extensive meadows.”

Wyoming County is a county located in the U.S. state of Pennsylvania. As of the 2010 census, the population was 28,276. Its county seat is Tunkhannock. It was created in 1842 from part of Luzerne County.
Wyoming County is included in the Scranton—Wilkes-Barre—Hazleton, PA Metropolitan Statistical Area.
...
The county is intersected by the North Branch of the Susquehanna River, and drained by Tunkhannock, Mehoopany, and other large creeks. The land surface is generally hilly or mountainous, Mehoopany, Tunkhannock, Knob, and Bowman's mountains occupying a portion. The soil is fertile. Timber, coal, and iron are very abundant.

Clinton Township, Wyoming County Pennsylvania, was established on Feb. 20, 1844. We have an area of 12.42 square miles and the township is responsible for 15.2 miles of roadway. As of the 2010 census the population was 1587. “Wyoming” is derived from an Indian word meaning “extensive meadows.” The South Branch of the Tunkhannock creek passes through the area on its way to the Susquehanna River, and eventually flows into the Chesapeake Bay.

Thanks so much for the info!  I'd seen the bit about Ephraim's son Benjamin being lost at sea, so I wasn't too sure about my Benjamin being Ephraim's son.   I'm pretty sure mine died around 1844 because of the will on Ancestry, which mentions the correct places and names his children.  But not his wife!  I've seen 1848 for her date of death, but no idea where that comes from.  I doubt if I have any new info to give you.  She had a brother, George Anson Bailey.  He's buried in Dalton, and the cemetery records say he was born in Rhode Island to Samuel & Roby Bailey.  A Benjamin F Bailey from Abington Twp was named as executor in Benjamin's will, but there are a couple of those in the area, from CT.   I think Benjamin F was the son of Capt Benjamin Bailey 1768-1858, who's buried in Wilkes-Barre.  I don't know if there's any link between the two Bailey families.

I have no idea where these Carpenters are buried.  There's a Carpenter Cemetery in the Lackawanna State Park near Dalton, also Walls and Chase Cemeteries, with Carpenter stones, but not for these folks.  I suppose that if they are there, the stones may not be legible anymore.  I no longer live there so can't explore "on the ground."

There are a lot of variations on the name of Oliver's wife.  Her first name as written in my Bible looks like Cylinda. I don't know for sure that it was even hers, but it has names and birthdates for some of children as well.

* Per Marty Carpenter myrtrat@live.com, he reports that Sarah Carpenter married Bartholomew Capwell, also from Carpenter Hollow.  And we know where he's buried. See: https://www.ancestry.com/discoveryui-content/view/152817448:60525
Sarah doesn't seem to be buried with him.   I think she died before he did.  But you can find him on the 1860 Clinton Twp census as "B Capwell" and the 1870 census as "Bartha Capwell" and Sarah is with him.  I think he's listed as "S Capwell" in 1850, and counted as a female, but his son Lester is also counted as a female, so I'd say it was a clerical error.
JRC comments about this portion of the will.
The will writing uses an old fashion double “S” mark that looks like a funky letter “f” without a crossbar and a tail. Technically it is a “Long s.” See:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Long_s
And in the will, the name Casswell has such a mark and those unaware of it likely would see the name as Cafwell or Capwell.
And the "Long s" is also used on the word "possess" on the same section.

MARRIAGE CONFLICT:
In the Carpenter Memorial of 1898, Familynumber 639 on page 443 of Daniel Carpenter and Mary Champlin has a son named William who married a Hannah Carpenter.  Hannah Carpenter-45419 born 14 Nov 1789 in South Kingston is NOT THE RIGHT Hannah Carpenter. Thus she is removed from William C. Carpenter-45418 and replaced.

The 3. William: Married Hannah Carpenter per CM (See page 443). Found to remain in Richmond, RI through 1870 Census.

The Hannah in the 1850 census is age 33 or born abt 1816 (NOT 1789!) and the William C. Carpenter is born abt 1805.

William C. Carpenter

(VII) William C., son of ____ ______Carpenter, was born in Newport, Rhode Island, in 1790, died in South Rutland, New York, 1851. In early life he followed the sea and became master of a vessel. During the war of 1812 Captain Carpenter took out letters of "marque and reprisal" and sailed the seas as a privateer, looking for British vessels for prizes. He was captured by an English man-of-war, his vessel lost, and he sent to England a prisoner, where he was kept in confinement until peace was declared between the United States and Great Britain. On his return to the U.S., he abandoned seafaring life, and moved to South Rutland, N.Y., where he engaged in farming until his death in 1851, at the age of sixty-one years. He married Hannah Carpenter.
