7687. Susannah Carpenter

5. Susan: familiar for Susannah. Married to Elijah Chaplin per CM. Correct is Champlin. 1850, 1860, 1870 census records in South Kingston, RI

7690. Abagail Ann "Abby" Carpenter

8. Abby: familiar for Abigail. Also married Silas Niles Littlefield. Census finds her at New Shoreham, RI in 1850, 1860 and 1870. Buried on Block Island, RI.

7691. William C. Carpenter

3. William: Married Hannah Carpenter per CM. Found to remain in Richmond, RI through 1870 Census.

PARENTS: Conflict  - Daniel  & Mary Champlin Carpenter per the CM and a Benjamin per another record.
The issue is 2 William Carpenters. 1) born abt  1805 and the other 2) born abt 1790 son of Benjamin.
This is resolved with the 1850 US Census. The Hannah in that census is age 33 or born abt 1816 and the William C. Carpenter is born abt 1805. So the William (b. abt 1790),  of Benjamin, is incorrect.

Hi,
Charles E. Carpenter 91333 and Edward H. Carpenter  45429 are my 2nd and 3rd great grandfathers.  I have been updating my tree on Ancestry (G Kanies; Kanies Family Tree)  as well as Family Tree Maker.  I recently discovered your Carpenter Cousins as I have focused on my Carpenter ancestors.  I have found quite a few updates to the information.   Attached is a word file with my updates.  Please let me know if you need any other format or information or have questions.  I am relatively new to collaborating like this and am open to learning more and modifying my input to your standards.  I have tried to include the sources in my Ancestry Tree for these individuals.
Thanks so much,
Gayle

Charles E. Carpenter 91333 and Edward H. Carpenter 45429 are my 2" and 3" great grandfathers.

45429 Edward H. Carpenter:
1). Incorrect Information:
Death date shows Oct 16 1888 in Winnebago Wis. I believe this is incorrect. It looks like this record came from Family Search in this record: "Wisconsin, Death Records, 1867-1907," database, FamilySearch (  : 10 March 2018), Edward H. Carpenter, 1888; citing Death, Winnebago, Wisconsin, Wisconsin State Historical Society, Madison; FHL microfilm 1,311,664.
This record does not match because the Birth year is 1848 and the spouses name is Eliza Carpenter.
Correct Information:
Died April 1 1896 in Minnesota Death certificate notes he was born in Rhode Island.
"Minnesota, County Deaths, 1850-2001," database with images, FamilySearch (  : 10 September 2018), Hennepin > Rural death returns, 1896-1907 > image 92 of 2161; multiple county courthouses, Minnesota.
His obituary notes that he passed away at his son's home in Minneapolis (this is Hennepin County). In 1900 his son John Dudley lived in Minneapolis. Obituary from the Palmyra Enterprise on Jun 25, 1896 on page 1, column 3.

2.) Incorrect Information:
Says Edward married Thankful Burdick-91332 on Nov 1. 1826.
Correct Information:
Thankful Burdick is actually the mother of Thankful Wilcox who is the correct spouse for Edward. See Citation below. The Descendants of Robert Burdick of Rhode Island.

11. Halsey: Halsey Champlin Carpenter. You already have a good deal of info on him. He is found in the 1840 and 1850 census in Salisbury, Herkimer, NY. Later in Rockbridge, WI in 1860, 1870 and 1880. A historical sketch remarks he initially settled in Eastern WI prior to Rockbridge. This is likely Waukesha as well.

Subject: Try to make sense out of my Carpenter family line

Hello John:
My grandmother was Fannie Lorena Carpenter Underwood.  She died in Chase County, Kansas in 1943.  She was a daughter of Chauncey Edward Carpenter and Frances A. Handy Carpenter.  Chauncey Edward Carpenter was born in Herkimer County New York on 29 May 1845 and died 9 Dec. 1919 in Paso Robles, San Luis Obispo County, CA.  His father was Halsey Champlain Carpenter who was born in Rhode Island and his mother was Sarah Ann Vannatter Carpenter.  Halsey C. Carpenter was born 6 Aug 1809 and died 10 Jan 1892 in Richland County, Wisconsin.   Here is my problem.  In the Carpenter Memorial it says that Halsey was the son of Daniel 639 (1966).  The Registration of Death that I received from Wisconsin says Halsey's father is William.  So far I haven't been able to find any records to prove either way.  If I can make the connection through several Daniels, I might be able to connect to the William (16) in the Carpenter Memorial.  I am a member of the Daughters of the American Colonists and I would really like to have this part of my family on record.  I hope you can help.  Thanks Janice Jenne Hill

Hello Janice,

There are a lot of discrepancies ...

Per the 1880 Census Halsey was born in NJ and his parents were born in NJ.
Yet in other records of Richland county, WI it says he was from the Empire state or NY.

I would document everything along with the discrepancies.

Until proven other wise, I assume Halsey Carpenter, Number 4156 in the Carpenter Memorial with No family listed is the person you seek.  A note in the Carpenter Memorial indicates he moved to WI.

You are not the only one who has been puzzled by this Halsey.

Below in my notes, you will find two more researchers who submitted data.  You may want to write them to see why they list a William as the father of Halsey instead of Daniel.

Sorry I could not be of much more help.

Good Hunting,

John R.Carpenter
La Mesa, CA

PS You may also want to consider Y-DNA.  This may rule out one line of research or the other. All you need is a male Carpenter who is on your line and some money and patience.

Amos Carpenter, a native of New York, came in 1854 and made his home with A J Slater. He was a physician, the first to locate in the town. In 1856 he removed to Vernon county, where he still lives.

Anson Stowell was an early settler in Rockbridge. He came there in 1857 and bought land on section 14, and built a substantial log house, 18x24 feet, which at that time was called Buck Creek mansion. He sold the following year to John Clarson, and moved to Henrietta, purchased land on section 32, and built a frame house. He cleared a portion of the land and lived there until 1861, when he traded for land on section 5, town of Rockbridge. He cleared some of this land, built a log house and frame barn, and remained here till 1867, when he returned to Henrietta and settled on section 17. Here he erected another log house and a commodious frame barn. In 1881 he bought the Perry Brown farm on section 18, and now makes that his home. Upon this place there is a nice frame house, built by Perry Brown. Mr. Stowell has built a frame barn upon this farm making the fourth built by him in the county. He has some of the best improvements in the town. He is a native of the State of New York, born in Rensselaer county, March 3, 1830. When he was twelve years old his parents moved to Oneida county, where he attained his majority. He was married Dec. 29, 1849, to Martha R, daughter of Holsey and Sarah (Vannetar) Carpenter. They are the parents of ten children --- James W, Mary A, Harland P, Miranda, Sarah E, Charles H, Dudley H, Fannie A, William E and Samuel E.

http://www.rootsweb.com/~wirichla/chap31.htm
Silas L Carpenter, son of Halsey and Sarah (Vannetter) Carpenter, was born in Chautauqua Co., NY, April 8, 1839. He made his home with his parents in York State and the eastern part of Wisconsin, and came to Rockbridge with them in 1856. He was then but seventeen years old and started out for himself, and by energy, industry and economy has secured a good home. He first went to Lone Rock and engaged in farming. He was married to Clarissa E., daughter of Stephen and Sarah (Glazier) Smith. She was born in Windham Co., Vt. They spent the winter in Rockbridge. In the fall of 1864 he enlisted in the 16th Wisconsin, company H, went south and joined the regiment at Marietta, was with Sherman on his march to the sea and through the Carolinas to Washington, where he was discharged with the regiment in June, 1865. In the fall he bought land on section 10, town of Rockbridge, joining the village plat. He built a log house, in which he lived until 1869, when he erected the frame house in which he now lives. His farm contains seventy acres, sixty of which are cleared and in a good state of cultivation. His wife died Sept. 29, 1879, leaving six children --- Leroy, Alice, Fred, Elma, Nellie and Edith. His second wife, to whom he was married March 29, 1880, was Delia, daughter of Tilas and Hannah (McCann) Knapp, early settlers of Marshall.
