488. Ashman Carpenter

NAME:
Ashman - no record found showing a middle initial or midle name(s).
Some people have conflated and added middle names of  Hope and versions of the name Archelus. These are totally different people with different families. Speculation and conflation or merging two people have caused great confusion.

NOTE:
Not listed in the Carpenter Memorial, but is listed in the Carpenter and Related Family Historical Journal, Vol. 5, Winter 1994, Number 7, on page 416.  Article by Raymond George Carpenter.
The article discussed Ashman Carpenter born 5 Sept 1721 or 1725 as son of Ashman Carpenter and Lucy Amelia.  It mentions that he died in 1786 in Ontario County, Canada after arriving there in 1783.
And it dismisses that Loyalist Ashman Carpenter was not a Patriot and he was confused with another younger Ashman Carpenter who died in 1839 Hardyston, Sussex, New Jersey. There is a mention about a SAR (Sons of the American Revolution) application from 1911 that confused the two Ashman Carpenters.
Then he mentions that he received a letter from “Mrs. Hope Matthews of Illinois” indicating that Loyalist Ashman Carpenter descendants can be a member of the United Empire Loyalists' Association of Canada. She references the Loyalist Gazette and other Canadian records she has researched.

LOYALIST:
A Loyalist.
SEE: Canadian Records researched by Mrs. Hope Matthews of Illinois.
One of the original loyalists who moved from New Jersey to Saltfleet, Ontario, Canada in 1783.  Descendants can be a member of the United Empire Loyalists' Association of Canada.
SEE: http://www.uelac.org/  - From a Loyalist Gazette issue. Date & issue number missing from notes.

SAR:  And a Patriot!?  Nope.
An Ashman Carpenter served as a private in the Morris County New Jersey Militia at the beginning of the Revolutionary War.
Primary Source Cited: "New Jersey Records of the American Revolution" - page 532.
NOTE: William "Bill" Carpenter reports: ... The 1911 SAR application of Ford Ashman Carpenter really is unsupported; the Ashman Carpenter who served in the Morris County Militia appears to be the one who died in Hardyston, Sussex County, NJ in 1839.
Name: Ashman Carpenter
Birth Place: Hopewell, New Jersey
SAR Membership: 23283
Role: Ancestor
Application Date: 12 Apr 1911

John,
This is just a sidebar note to say thank you for describing the background involving the Usher book and Ashman C-12769. I was unaware of the details and found them very interesting.
The available materials concerning Ashman C-21897 contain the usual accretion of myths and half-truths that surround the hard facts. The 1911 SAR application of Ford Ashman Carpenter really is unsupported; the Ashman Carpenter who served in the Morris County Militia appears to be the one who is died in Hardyston, Sussex County, NJ in 1839, not Upper Canada in 1786 (or 1788). Not to be outdone, our Canadian cousins claim UEL status, but he did not appear on the original lists and did not receive a land grant (his sons are in a somewhat different category). The DAR applications specify Ashman Carpenter of Hardyston and run through a female line of descent, so they may well be valid. When this immediate WV research project is over, I will review my file on Ashman C-21897 and his descendants (e.g., notes, estate file from Archives of Ontario, other documents), write-up a digest of the data and send it to you, just in case there is some information that would supplement your existing background information database.  ...

Additional information by Donald W. Carpenter (born 28 Apr. 1943) of Ontario, Canada.  Don supplied family group sheets.  Don has birth for Ashman as 1721. The year 1721 & 1725 has both been used, yet me thinks the 1721 is more accurate.
SEE: "Saltfleet: Then and Now" regarding Saltfleet Twp., Wentworth county, Ontario, Canada where Ashman Carpenter went in 1783.

BOOK:
Saltfleet – Then and Now 1792-1793. oblong 4to. pp. xi, 408. double columns. illus. maps on endpapers. gilt-stamped bds. (musty). [Fruitland]: Corporation of the Town of Stoney Creek, 1975.

CHILDREN: In one record Martin is listed and in another he is missing and a Nancy is the eldest child.  Nancy, who married a Hackenberry or Huckenbury, is not correct. Then we have a Martha in Martin's spot in another record.  Was Martin Martha and vice versa?
Nancy was probably the daughter of Joseph James Carpenter.  Children order is uncertain and other than Gershom's date of birth the rest is a best guess. The first four children may have died young?  Could there have been another marriage?

UPDATE:

Faye Hood provided an update to this line through daughter Phebe Carpenter. She provided where Ashman Carpenter, his wife Mary (Boyle) Carpenter and Stephen Coon (1764-1805) are buried in St. Andrews English Church Cemetery, Grimsby, Ontario.

UPDATE: See Stephen John Coon's notes.  It has additional information on the Descendants of Ashman's daughter, Phebe who married Stephen John Coons.

John,
Actually, I have more information than I thought about Ashman Carpenter.  I just haven’t entered it or it’s not suitable right now to send as a GEDCOM.  Attached are images of two pages on Ashman Carpenter from “Carpenter Of Townsend Township, Norfolk County, Upper Canada. A Long Point Settlement Genealogy. Compiled by R. Robert Mutrie As of June 2001.”
Mutrie wrote the book “The Long Point Settlers” and has continued publishing in the “Long Point Settlers Journal”.  There is no copyright on his genealogy although I’m sure you will cite it properly.  He has compiled genealogies of many of the families who settled at Long Point but wrote “the entire collection will not be published at this time, nor indeed in the foreseeable future.”  I think this information is very reliable particularly for the first generation.  It may not be absolutely complete, because Ashman may have a daughter Ruth born about 1763 who died earlier in addition to the children listed in Mutrie’s genealogy. I’m not at all certain about her one way or the other.  After the first generation Mutrie’s genealogies are often helpful but not always as complete.  He did have some invaluable information about George N. Carpenter from his years in Townsend, Norfolk County, Ontario before, he traveled to Marathon, Lapeer County, Michigan in 1859.  Mutrie doesn’t attribute sources in quite as much detail as I would like, but he does in some cases.
I will send his information on Joseph James Carpenter later and what I have accumulated separately on his family probably in GEDCOM.  Until then I hope you will find this information helpful.

DEATH:
The 2001 "Carpenter Of Townsend Township, Norfolk County, Upper Canada" has that "Carpenter, Ashman, born in 1725, died at Queenston, Niagara Twp., Lincoln Co., Upper Canada in 1786." And: "Ashman died soon after at Queenston."
And from the “Annals of The Forty” … Ashman Carpenter "He died at Queenston in 1786 and was buried there."

WIKI:
Queenston is a compact rural community and unincorporated place 5 kilometres north of Niagara Falls in the Town of Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario, Canada.
In the early 19th century, the community's name was spelled as Queenstown.
Queenston was first settled in the 1770s by Loyalist refugees and immigrants from the United States. By 1807, the village had 100 homes and a population of 300.
The settlement of Queenston was destroyed on 10 December 1813. British Captain William Hamilton Merritt later said that he saw "nothing but heaps of coals, and the streets full of furniture".[10]

The Battle of Queenston Heights was the first major battle in the War of 1812. Resulting in a British victory, it took place on 13 October 1812 near Queenston, Upper Canada (now Ontario).
The village of Queenston consisted of a stone barracks and twenty houses each surrounded by gardens and peach orchards.[15] Several farmhouses were scattered through the neighbouring fields and pastures. The village lay at the mouth of the gorge of the River Niagara. Immediately south of the village, the ground rose 300 feet (100 m) to Queenston Heights.

A custom in the 1700s was family burials on land they owned. Sadly most of these have been lost to history and only rarely were remain relocated elsewhere.
The only cemetery surviving in Queenston is Hamilton Burial Grounds establish circa 1800. It was originally a private family burial ground and preserved by the family until taken over by the city.

Archelaus Ashman Hope Carpenter's Will:
DATED: 2007 (source available upon request) I would also question whether Archelaus "Ashman" Carpenter's date of death is 1786 or 1788. The Estate File for Archelaus "Ashman" Carpenter in the Archives of Ontario includes an affidavit by one of his sons in support of an application for Letters of Administration.

This affidavit states that Archelaus "Ashman" died without a will "intestate" in February 1788. This later date is also consistent with a list of annual expenditures charged to the estate "[t]o supporting the widow and four children," which begins with the period from 5 February 1789 through 5 February 1790. Note that the estate was processed in 1797-98.

BIO suggestion for Find A Grave
Ashman Carpenter was a Loyalist that moved from New Jersey to Queenstown (Queenston), Ontario, Canada in 1783. He died there in 1786. No month or day given. He was buried on his farm in Queenston. His grave has been lost to time.
Ashman has a memorial marker in the St. Andrews Anglican Church Cemetery in Grimsby.

Ashman Carpenter is often conflated or mixed up with other Loyalists like Archelus and Hope Carpenter who also fled from the New Jersey and New York areas of the nascent United States.

Ashman was born 5 Sep 1721 in Hopewell Township of the Hunterdon, now part of, Mercer County, New Jersey. Occasionally his birth year is given 1725, like on the memorial marker of this record, is confused with birth years of the said conflated Archelus and Hope Carpenter above.

History states that William Carpenter of Cobham, Surrey, England, was granted armorial bearings in 1663. He was named 'Gentle-man of his Majesty's Honourable Chamber Extraordinary'.

CARPENTER
History states that William Carpenter of Cobham, Surrey, England, was granted armorial bearings in 1663. He was named 'Gentle-man of his Majesty's Honourable Chamber Extraordinary'.
The American branch of this family descended from one William, who with his wife, Abigail and son, John, came to America on the ship 'Bevis'. They first settled in Long Island and were connected by marriage with the Bridgeman and Pettit families there. Pettit records show that one of the Long Island Pettits married a daughter of Increase Carpenter and they also had a son bearing that name and no doubt quite appropriately so.
The time that a part of this family moved from Long Island to New Jersey is not known but before the War of the Revolution, Ashman Carpenter, a descendant of the above mentioned William and John, resided in Hopewell, N.J. He was born in 1725, married Mary Boyle of Maidenhead, N.J. and, being a Loyalist, emigrated to Canada after the war. He died at Queenston in 1786 and was buried there. Thereafter his wife, Mary, with her sons and daughters moved further west and settled in Saltfleet and Grimsby township.
It is said that Mrs. Carpenter resided with her son, Gershom, until her death in 1815. She was buried in St. Andrew's churchyard, Grimsby, and only a portion of the stone which marks her resting place, can be seen embedded in an immense tree which, it is recorded, was planted by her grave shortly after her death.

Children of Ashman and Mary (Boyle) Carpenter:-
ALEXANDER, born 1757, married Elizabeth Smith, died 20 Oct. 1813, buried in St. Andrew's churchyard, Grimsby.

Hi John,
Thank you so much for your reply.
I have a copy of nine of the ten volumes of The Annals of the Forty, less Volume 4 which contains the Carpenter history. A contact at UELAC was able to send me the relevant pages, but I am still trying to acquire a full copy of it.
Thank you for the nudge toward the Loyalist Gazette and Mrs Hope Matthews’ report. I will contact them and see if they can find it for me. Here’s a bit of an update on this branch. This is bare bones, as it is late here (I reside in the UK), but I’m happy to try to clarify anything you might be interested in.
Ashman Carpenter, as far as I can find, did die at Queenston, Upper Canada in 1786  (the date is a bit disputed, but most sources agree on this. Apparently, he is buried at Lundy’s Lane Cemetery (although I am still trying to confirm this). His wife Mary Boyle is buried at St Andrew’s Churchyard at The Forty, which became Grimsby, Ontario. There is a memorial plaque to Ashman near her grave.
Ashman and Mary’s son William married Martha Smith of New Jersey, in 1805 in Saltfleet, Upper Canada. Then it was likely known as The Fifty. Their son Alexander would marry Anna Young Pettit in 1835 in Saltfleet. Their daughter Augusta would marry George Franklin Lewis in 1858 in Wentworth, Canada West. Their daughter Helen would marry Joseph Jardine in 1882 and their daughter Irene Augusta would marry John Wilkie Lawrason in Dundas, Ontario in 1908. My grandmother Ruth Irene Lawrason was born in 1916. My mother Joan Jardine in 1940.
I look forward to checking the links you’ve sent me.
My best,  Kathy Hall

Number 324 in the Carpenter Memorial.  Page 86
Family on same page #49.  See also page 906 for corrections.

NAME: No evidence of any middle name, let alone William.

It is evident that this John after the death of his father in 1745 settled in
Gloucester county, NJ near Woodbury, the residence of Judge Carpenter of the
Philadelphia Carpenter Family.  The judge had a seal which he used in letter
writing: the impression on sealing wax, the compiler of the CM (in 1898) had in
his possession, which appears to be a copy of the Rehoboth (Greyhound version
of the Carpenter) Coat of Arms.

MARRIAGE: 2 May 1743
Per PA Marriages before 1699, page 278: 1743, May 2.
Carpenter, John, and Sarah Driver, area II.   SEE: Sarah's notes.
Per the Carpenter Family in America book 1901, page 345: "On Feburary 3, 1743
John Carpenter married Sarah Driver per the records at Christ's Church,
Philadelphia.  The CFinA book is in error.  Terry Lee carpenter writes:
The 3 Feb 1743 date for the marriage of John Carpenter to Sarah Driver is an error -- I looked up the original bond. The confusion came from misreading the Quaker-style date, 2-3-1743, which is 2nd day 3rd month 1743, i.e., 2 May 1743, not 3 Feb 1743. The bride's name is sometime said to be Mary, but it was Sarah, and she signed the administratrix's oath 'Sarah' after John's death.

WILL: Per the 1901 Book listed above on page 345 indicates John Carpenter of
Deptford made will on 23 May 1760 and it was proved 28 July 1760.  His will
directed that his estate be divided into three parts.  One for his wife Sarah
and the other two parts for his two children.  While the names of the two
children are not mentioned they are later recorded as Benjamin and Samuel.
An endorsement in the will says that "Sarah, widow of John Carpenter, was one
of the people called Quakers."

CONFLICT: The Carpenter and Related Family Historical Journal, Vol. 5, Winter
1994, Number 7, page 417, article by Raymond George Carpenter is in conflict
with the information on this family.  The spouse listed in that record is Ann
Van Clease with John Carpenter being born about 1729.  Their source is HART
FAMILY CHART.
ALSO the Carpenter Memorial indicates he died about age 21.
Which is right or wrong is unknown.

CONFLICT: Margaret Carpenter Dunton of Middleport, OH in the early 1970s had
a drop chart that shows a Samuel Carpenter who married Mary (Thomas?) as father,
and with a note "No documentary record except family lineage book."
Grandfather on that chart is a Thomas the ggf as John Carpenter of Horsham High
Sherriff of Sussex (Murdered) then gggf Robert Carpenter of Horsham then Thomas,
then William then William of Hereford who died 1520.
This has a note from Raymond George Carpenter that the lineage appears correct for
the first 8 generations. This drop chart was with papers submitted to the Carpenter
Museum in Rehoboth, MA by James A. Carpenter of Bowling Green, KY and was
submitted on 6/03/1983.

QUESTION:  Is this another occasion where two families are smashed together?  Was John Carpenter b. 1747, Joseph Carpenter b. abt 1751, and Caroline Carpenter b. abt 1753 belong to another John Carpenter another generation?  More research needed.

Sarah Mary Driver

NAME:
Sarah per the first part and Mary per the Ancestry part. Which is correct?

Sarah was the daughter of W. (not M.) Driver of Gloucester County, NJ and they were
married at the First Presbyterian church at Philadelphia 2 May 1743 per the
Carpenter Memorial.   Resided in Gloucester County, NJ, near Woodbury.

Per the Carpenter Family in America book 1901, page 345: "On February 3, 1743
John Carpenter married Sarah Driver per the records at Christ's Church,
Philadelphia.  Is one record an intent or where there 2 John Carpenters?
Also, "on April 8, 1743 John Carpenter purchased land at Deptford, Gloucester
County, New Jersey, in close proximity to the farm of a John Driver
(who appears to be the father of Sarah? Or Uncle?)."

ANCESTRY:  Not very good Carpenter ancestry.

John,
This is still my address.
On Hezekiah, son of Abigail:
I have not seen the baptismal records of the First Presbyterian Church of Philadelphia, but you can view them at your local FHL without having to rent the film. At the library go to:

That will probably be a film of the original record (though sometimes it is a film of a copy)
Though unusual, the record of a baptism did occur at 2 different places, usually if the witnesses lived in a different place than the parents. However, I think my citation was wrong. In reviewing the baptismal records for the Dutch Reformed Church of Bensalem, I do not find that baptism. There is a break between 1713 and 1724. The First Presbyterian Church of Philadelphia is probably the correct citation.
One citation I have seen online:
The register of the First Presbyterian Church of Philadelphia, for April 22, 1714, lists the baptism of "Hezekiah son of Abigail Carpenter" at Maidenhead.

500. Colville Carpenter

Number 336 in the Carpenter Memorial.  Page 87 - Father is listed as Joseph.
Family on page 161 (#149)
His name is listed as Calvin, Colvin, Colvell, and Colwell, but the AF has his name as Colville named after a relative.
He served in the Revolution and was in Captain Casey's company: He was assessed in Chester in 1775.
He was born in Hempstead, LI per the Carpenter Memorial but the Carpenter and Related Family Historical Journal (1995 Vol. 5, No. 9) indicates Chester, NY.

The will of Calvin was dated Aug. 25, 1805, proved Dec. 23, 1815. 2  SOUR S203 3  TEXT pg 161
1  MILI Calvin served in the Revolutionary War and was in Captain Casey's Company;  he was assessed in Chester in 1775.  We find his name written Calvin, Colvin and Colvell, but Calvin is probably the correct name?

NOTE:
Daniel C Carpenter of Goshen -died in Goshen ~1823? Wife Sally -Brother Jesse. John246528 of Lumberland purchased land from Sally in 1841 after Daniel's death. John 246528 lived in the same location in Lumberland  in 1820(John Father would still be living),1830,1840. I can't tell if the property being purchased is where he has resided, but I'm looking into it. It is property on the Beaver Brook which empties into the Delaware river. Seems like a nice place for a mill. Let me look into this more before I cite.
Thanks! Kathryn

OLIVER R. CARPENTER.
The great-grandfather of the subject of this biography was Jesse C. Carpenter, who was of English parentage, and first settled upon Long Island. In 1732 he came to Goshen, Orange Co., and was soon after married to a daughter of John and Susan Colville Bradner, the former of whom was, during his early life, a resident of Edinburgh, Scotland, and chose Goshen as a home in 1721. Here he labored as a preacher of the gospel until his death, in 1732, and was the first expounder of the word of God in the hamlet of Goshen. Among the children of Jesse C. was Benjamin, whose birth occurred in 1754, and who served with credit in the war of the Revolution as one of the garrison of Fort Montgomery. He was married to Miss Chandler, of Craigville, Orange Co., to whom were born children,-Nathaniel, James, Samuel, and a daughter, Hannah. The death of Benjamin Carpenter occurred Sept 28, 1828.
COMMENT:
Jesse C. is this Benjamin Carpenter were genealogical workup and Y-DNA testing.  Benjamin's mother was Susanna Christina Bradner whose parents were Rev. John and Susan Colville Bradner.
Benjamin's father is Joseph Carpenter (b. 1692 in Long Island) and that Jos. in the record was misread as Jes.

In the hopes of finding more descendants and/or helping someone out. There is clearly erroneous information that Hannah Carpenter married David Roe. She did not. ABC was paying no attention when he included it in his book. Her sister Clarissa married David Roe. I have Jesse Jr.'s will and Sarah Seely Carpenter's sister, Hannah Seely Cooley's will as well and will share. Connie

My 3rd great grandfather, JESSE6 CARPENTER (JOSEPH5, SAMUEL4, JOHN3, WILLIAM2, WILLIAM1) was baptized September 19, 1755 in Goshen, Orange, NY, and died January 17, 1815 in Elmira, Tioga, NY. He married SARAH SEELY March 7, 1782 in Goshen, Orange, NY, daughter of BAZALEEL SEELY and ZERVIAH SATTERLY. She was born October 20, 1762 in Goshen, Orange, NY, and died possibly May 8, 1827 in NY.

His will, was written 8 Jan 1815 filed at Elmira, Tioga, NY and probated 11 Feb 1815.

Emma Sayre

Chemung county was created in 1836 from parts of Tioga county, NY.
Tioga county was created in 1791 from part of Montgomery county, NY.

Emma has been noted marrying a Jesse Carpenter.  The Jesse from Orange county or Westchester county, NY?
Current bet is on the one from Westchester county, NY.  JRC 2/2004

1610. 1 Carpenter

possibly died young.
This child's father is listed as Joseph in the AF.  This is probably incorrect
since Joseph would have been almost 90 years old to sire the child.  This child
prbably belongs to Jesse.

1611. Sarah Carpenter

possibly died young.
This child's father is listed as Joseph in the AF.  This is probably incorrect
since Joseph would have been almost 90 years old to sire the child.  This child
probably belongs to Jesse.

E-MAIL:
Tue, 07 Dec 1999 From: "Larry Orr & Hanna Witte Orr"
Hi John,
William Haslun gave us your email address; we have been corresponding about
some confusing data concerning the Goshen Carpenter families.
Larry's greatgrandmother was Catherine Keziah Kerr, daughter of Elizabeth
Stewart and William Kerr.
Elizabeth was the daughter of Luther Stewart and Keziah Carpenter. Catherine
wrote down several notes on her family history quite some time before her death
in 1907, she mentions that Luther Stewart was born in 1748, married Keziah
before 1781 (when Catherine's mother Elizabeth was born) and died in 1832. She
also wrote that Keziah was born in 1750 and died in 1823. She also mentioned
that John Bradner was her gggrandfather, that Mrs Bradner's father's name was
Colvil.
Larry's uncle researched these notes, he thought that the family goes back to
John Bradner and Christian(e) Colville through their daughter Susannah who
married Joseph Carpenter in Goshen, and one of their children was the above
Keziah. While I was trying to confirm this I realized that the data published
in several websites, including the LDS databases, is very confusing: they show
Susannah Bradner married to a Joseph Carpenter who was born in 1697 in Jamaica
NY, moved to Goshen, and died the same year he married her. Also the older
group of his children, born in Jamaica, were the same age as Susannah, the
younger group was born in Goshen but before he married Susannah.
The LDS Ancestry Pedigree Chart and the IGI records show:
1.   Keziah b.abt. 1738 Goshen, Orange Cty, NY parents Jos. Carpenter &Susanna
Bredner.
2.   b. abt. 1740 Chester, NY parents Joseph Carpenter & Mrs Jos. Carpenter
               m. Luther Steward, 2 Apr 1780, First Presbyt.
Church,Goshen,Orange, NY
3.  Joseph b.1692 d.1797 m.1789 Susanna Bradnor, (10 children including Keziah
b.abt.1742 Jamaica, Queens, NY )
4.                 m.Susanna Bradnor abt. 1754,Goshen,Orange, NY
5.                 m.Susanna Bradnor, 1729, Goshen,Orange,NY
d.1775 Conklintown, NY, parents John Carpenter and
Mrs.Elizabeth Carpenter.
Do you have any insights on which of all these records could be the correct
one? Since Luther Stewart, Keziah's husband was born in 1742 or 1748 I think
that he would have married someone more or less the same age, also their last
child was born in 1787, the Keziah b. 1738 would have been much too old to have
children.
Thank you very much, and best regards,
Hanna Orr.
