http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fort_Ticonderoga
Fort Ticonderoga is a large 18th century fort built at a strategically important narrows in Lake Champlain where a short traverse gives access to the north end of Lake George in the state of New York, USA. The fort controlled both commonly used trade routes between the English-controlled Hudson River Valley and the French-controlled Saint Lawrence River Valley. The name "Ticonderoga" comes from an Iroquois word tekontaró:ken, meaning "it is at the junction of two waterways".[3] Fort Ticonderoga was the site of four battles over the course of 20 years.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Ticonderoga_%281777%29
The Battle of Ticonderoga occurred on July 5 and July 6, 1777 was more a battle of maneuver than a direct conflict in the American Revolutionary War. The British Army, led by John Burgoyne, occupied the fort after forcing American General Arthur St. Clair to withdraw the defenders.
...
The guns at Ticonderoga, most remaining supplies, and some men too ill and wounded to move were left to the British.

803. Elihu or Elihue Carpenter

Number 524 in the Carpenter memorial on page 106.
Family on page 199 (# 206)
He was a deacon of the church.  A farmer.

He did not attend school until he was 16 years of age.  He was then a tall
boy, and had to go into a class of small children, which was very humiliating
to him.  He made good progress and soon mastered the common branches and became
a teacher.  His success as a taecher was remarkable-one of the best.  Many of
the liberally educated men of the town owe their success to him.
It was a credit to a student to state that he had obtained his early education
under the tutorship of Elihu Carpenter.
He also taught singing school and as the old lady, Mrs. Perry said in her 92nd
year of her age, "that he taught singing school for nothing and found candles."
He used to sing when about the house and his work.  Someone asked his mother
one day what made him sing so much, when she replied: "To plague the devil."
He sang pious hymns.

He enlisted and served as corporal in the Lexington scare in Nathaniel
Carpenter's No. 607 Company and served eight days.  He enlisted again in
Nathaniel Carpenter's Company, Col. Cary's Regiment at New York and White
Plains for five months and was dismissed on Dec. 1, 1776.
He enlisted for a third time and served as Quartermaster-sergeant in Col.
Hathaway's Regiment on April 21, 1777 and served 24 days in Rhode Island.
He enlisted a fourth time as a Sergeant in Capt. Nathaniel Carpenter's Company,
Col. Whitney's Regiment in the Rhode Island Alarm on May 13, 1777 and served
one month and twenty five days where he marched from Rehoboth to Point Judith.

In the funeral sermon of the Rev. Jacob Ide of Medway,,MA., in
referring to his own conversion I find the following paragraph:

"A great change came over my mind - a delight in the services of
God. To prepare myself to be useful in the world, became now an
object of my most ardent desire. - was greatly encouraged in my
purpose by the district school master, Dea. Elihu Carpenter to
whom I confess myself under greater obligations than to any
other man. The good layman held religious meetings, giving
scripture expositions and exhortations.  I so admired him as to
make him my model of future usefulness. But Dea. Carpenter fired
me with higher ambition and molded me to nobler issues. He urged
upon me a preparation for the ministry.  His words to me were
fuel to the fire already kindling in my heart."2  SOUR S203

Attleboro, Nov, 4, 17??
My Dear Son: - I thankfully received yours of Oct. 24. and was glad to hear you were well enmesh to be stirring. though sorn: to hear your duty is so urgent as •camels to allow time for nature's refreshment by sleep.
Be as careful as you can of your own health and life, for my sake as well as your own. but in a consistency with that. be wary. vigilant and faithful in the discharge of your duty. You may not on any account relax a prudent care and watchfulness or settle into security at any time. especially when on a scouting party. Make God your refuge in times of fear and danger. I believe the enemy. skillful in ye all of war. are with all their skill endeavoring to get ye advam cage and so to bring on a genets' action. and I pray God to make their hopes abortive and their endeavors vain therein, by the vigilance. resolution and faithfulness of generals. officers and soldiers.
I am glad to hear Mr. Cobb is better. and upon the mending hand. He hath been earnestly remembered at the Throne of Grace: indeed we think of you all when we go to the Throne of Grace for ourselves. and that is the best we can do for you. Your brother Samuel is confined by a fever sore and how it will please to dispose of life or limb we cannot tell. though since it was opened. his fever and pain and the tumor too, have at present abated. Your grandmother is a little about. Your mother and brothers and sisters, In usual health. send love to you. Give my love to all friends and partkularly your brother John. I commit you to the Divine Protection.
I am your loving father.

• On the 13th inft. died at Attleborough, in the 70th year of his age, the Rev. Mr. PETER THACHER, paftor of the fecond church in that town. En[dowed] by the great author of nature with refpectable abilities, he early devoted them to the fervice of God in the miniftry: In this employment he placed his higheft fatisfaction, and while he difcharged its duties with ftrict punctuality and temperate zeal, he acquired the efteem and refpect of all who were acquainted with his character. Strongly attached to the peculiar doctines of the gofpel, he held them up in the cleareft and moft explicit terms; but he never fuffered this attachement to prejudice his mind, or embitter his conduct towards thofe who differed from him.  His warm and exemplary piety evidenced that the religion which he preached to others, had made a real impreffion upon his own heart; and his inflexible integrity compelled the refpect of his enemies, while his warm benevolence, and open, hofpitable temper, conciliated the affection of his frends. Under long and distreffing informities, which for two years paft, have prevented his attendance upon the public duties of his profeffion, he exercifed the greateft patience and refignation, and died as he lived, in the firm faith of the gofpel, and a joyful hope of its future and eternal rewards.

• x. Nathan Prince Thacher, b. Feb. 13, 1771, d. an infant Sept. 19, 1771.

[1] The 11 day difference between Peter's recorded date of birth (Jan. 14, 1715/16) and his stated date of birth on his gravestone (Jan. 25, 1716) is the result of Peter's family misunderstanding the result of England's conversion from the Julian to modern Gregorian calendar effective Jan. 1, 1752. The 11 day difference between the Julian and Gregorian calendar was corrected on a one-time only basis by the day following Sept. 3, 1752 being Sept. 14, 1752. It did not require any other adjustment to a prior or future date in the English calendar.

2249. Mary Thacher

possibly died in PA.

806. Nehemiah Carpenter

Number 575  on page 114 in the Carpenter Memorial.  His family is #220.
A farmer who settled in Foxboro abt 1750.

The following was OCRed from the above book.

He was the first settler of what is now Foxboro Village, buliding a house
there about the year 1750.  He was prominent in the formation of the town, and
was town clerk and treasurer, selectman and constable for a number of years.
He was the first deacon of the first Orthodox church formed in town and he gave
land for a cemetery.  He kept a hotel being the half way house between Boston
and Providence.

Nehemiah took an active part in the formation of the town of Foxboro and
was one of the 29 charter members of the first church which was formed in
1779, of which he was chosen one of the deacons in 1780 and served until
his death in 1799.

His second wife Sarah Day Hartshorn, was the widow of Thomas Hartshorn, who
lived in a small house that stood on the site of David Carpenter's greenhouse.
Sarah died 22 Dec. 1810, aged 81 and is buried beside her husband near where
the monument stood in 1898.

He appears as sergeant on the Lexington Alarm Roll of the Company of Captain
Israel Smith of Stoughton and served 3 days, date not readable.  However this
must have been in March or April 1775 and could be no other than the Nehemiah
Carpenter of Foxboro.  He was then in the 44th year of his age.  He like
others, left his home at the first alarm to obtain the rights of colonists at
the risk of his life.

Nehemiah Carpenter of Stoughtenbam appears on the pay roll of Capt. Pratt's
Company, Col. Gill's Regiment; enlisted March 4, 1776 and discharged March 11,
1776: marched on Roxbury alarm: served eight days: residence given as
Stoughton.

Nehemiah of Foxboro appears as Lieutenant on the pay roll of Capt. Samuel
Fisher's Company of Wrentham, Col. Jonathan Titcomb's Regiment, for services at
Rhode island: enlisted May 3, 1777; served two months and three days; he also
appears among the list of officers of the Massachusetts Militia as First
Lieutenant of Company 7, of the 3d Suffolk Regiment.  This was probably a
company formed in Foxboro.  He also appears among the list of officers of
Massachusetts Militia as Captain in the 3d Suffolk Regiment and no doubt this
was a Foxboro Company.

On page 114, second paragraph describes a old paper as a will, with seal torn
off and his name erased.

Benjamin I. WHEELER was born in Rehoboth, Mass., September 19, 1766. He settled at Montpelier, now East Montpelier, about the year 1790, on the farm where he lived until his death. His father and grandfather were named Philip WHEELER. He was one of a large family, two brothers of which came to Montpelier at an early date and lived to an advanced age. At the organization of the town of Montpelier, in 1791, he was elected one of the listers and one of the highway surveyors, and the same year town grand juror. In 1792 he was elected selectman, and held that office sixteen years previous to 1818. In the spring of 1793 he married Huldah FRENCH, of Attleboro, Mass. They had five sons and five daughters, all of whom lived to maturity except three sons, who died while quite young. He died March 7, 1845, His wife died February 8, 1856, aged eighty-four years. Royal WHEELER, second son of Benjamin I. and Huldah (FRENCH) WHEELER, was born at Montpelier, now East Montpelier, December 15, 1799. He taught school in young manhood, but adopted farming as his occupation for life. He was selectman from 1831 to 1836, several years moderator of town meetings, representative to the state legislature in 1838 and 1839, and state senator in 1852 and 1853. At the organization of the town of East Montpelier, in 1849, he was chosen clerk, which office he held until 1855. October 31, 1827, he married Lucy, daughter of Parley and Rebecca (PEABODY) DAVIS, born at Montpelier, now East Montpelier, February 5, 1802. He died March 4, 1874, and she September 16, 1878, both at East Montpelier. They had two children, viz.: Benjamin I., born September 12, 1828, now living at East Montpelier; and Sarah D., born November 18, 1835, who died August 14, 1884. Royal WHEELER was mentally a strong man. He was active in promoting the educational and religious interests of his town, an eminent and faithful public officer, an honest, upright businessman, and a generous and valuable citizen. His son Benjamin I. is a man thoroughly well informed, a great reader, often asked and always ready to give information to his neighbors, and is one of East Montpelier's most reliable citizens.
