Subject: Carpenter lineage
Hello John-
My name is Andrew Waller and I am writing to you in regards to info on the Carpenter lineage. I began tracing my paternal great grandmother, whose name was Ida Carpenter. Her father was Sylvester Carpenter, born 1853, New York. His father seems to be a Levi Carpenter, born ca.1825, New York. Levi's wife was Wealthy Sweet, and they had two other children, Henry and Charles. I then found the Carpenters of Rehoboth website, and found a Levi Carpenter descendent, with children Henry and Charles, but no Sylvester. In the census record of 1860, I have them all together. Sylvester was the middle child in that record.
I am currently waiting for the results of a DNA test I took on Ancestry. Would it be possible to determine a common lineage with anyone? Thank you for your time, and a Happy New Year to you ! Sincerely, Andrew Waller

11284. Harvey Carpenter

Number 5958 in the Carpenter Memorial on page 600.
Harvey was b. in Cornish, N.H. Residence, Boston.
He wrote some brief sketches of some of his ancestors. He was born in Cornish or Hanover,
N.H. July 22, 1819, and accompanied his parents to Vermont then afterwards to Hanover, where
he remained but a short time; on the morning of Nov. 22, 1842, he left for Boston, where he
resided until his death.
He left home (his parents house in VT) on the morning of Nov. 22, 1842
for Boston where he served a three year course of study at Kimball's Union
academy, NH and entered Dartmouth college in 1842 and was appointed by
President Lord as monitor of his class and was honorably discharged from the
same college in the same year in consequence of his poor health.
He later engaged in more active duties of the mercantile trade, which business he
was in until his death.
Among his papers, we find the following:
"Boston, May 24, 1881.  As I intend to leave Boston, the city of my adoption, I
hope that when I die the circumstances may be such that the last verse in my
poem on Mt. Auburn cemetery may prove true in relation to my remains."  The
verse he referred to reads thus: "With kindred's dust e'er unforgot, Let mine
repose when life hath fled, Within thy gates dear hallowed spot, 'Mt. Auburn,
City of the dead.'"

Subject: Re: VTGENLIB Sales Research Request

Good morning,

Yes, I am researching John Geer who is buried at Forest Hill Cemetery in Charlestown, New Hampshire. DOB May 4, 1815 and DOD July 2, 1884. According to my research, he was born in Charlestown and died in Jersey City, New Jersey. I have not been able to locate a birth record or positively identify his parents.

Census records indicate his wife was Lucia and on some records I have found for their children her last name is Carpenter. She is not the daughter of Parker and Betsey Carpenter or Willard and Polly Carpenter as many have indicated on ancestry.com and likely the source of much confusion. John and Lucia’s son John C. Is of most interest to me but I have not been able to find a birth record for him. I believe he was born in Claremont, New Hampshire about 1852 and died in Manhattan July 15, 1927.

The date on the headstone for Lucia’s death is truly puzzling. I have not been able to find out anything about her other than her being born in Vermont according to Census records.

I believe I am on the right track with John Geer being my ancestor. He died in Jersey City and that’s where my grandmother (a Geer) was born so the connection makes sense. I’d really like to confirm John’s parents, Lucia’s DOB, DOD, marriage to John and who her parents were.

I am so appreciative of any help in solving this mystery! Please let me know if you need any additional information that I may be able to provide. Thank you so much!!

Donna Murphy

Edward Paddock Carpenter
Birth: 1841
Death: 15 Oct 1912 (aged 70–71) Johnson, Lamoille County, Vermont, USA
Burial: Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Saint Johnsbury, Caledonia County, Vermont, USA
Memorial #: 127109751
Bio: Son of Charles P. and Julia Paddock Carpenter.
St. Johnsbury Caledonian November 06, 1912,

Edward left school at about the age of 14, and went to work at the St. Johnsbury Caledonian.  He worked there until September 9, 1861, when he enlisted for service in the Civil War.  He was a musician for the 4th Regiment, Vermont Volunteers until February 20, 1862 when severe illness resulted in his honorable discharge.  He spent the next seven years recovering from the effects of the illness.

Edward began learning to be a watchmaker, and married Sarah Fitch on June 19, 1871.  The couple lived in Derby Line Vermont, then in Springfield, Massachusetts, where Edward studied pharmacy.  Around 1875 the couple moved to Johnson, where Edward was a druggist and watchmaker.

In 1890, Edward and Sarah moved to St. Johnsbury to care for Edward's father.  After both Sarah and Edward's father passed away, Edward moved to East Hardwick and again worked as a druggist and watchmaker.  He returned to Johnson around 1919, and spent the last two years of his life there.
