812. Daniel Carpenter

NOTE:
AF has father listed as Obidiah Carpenter, born 12 Mar 1677.
This seems unlikely because father would be 64 years old.  Father may be (YES)
Obidiah's son Obidiah Carpenter, Jr. born 1707.  His children born 1729 & 1731.

The Carpenter Memorial on page 115 confirms that Daniel number 581 is the 8th
child of Obadiah number 165 on page 72.
A farmer.  One record indicates he married Elizabeth Tyler in 1760 then married
again in 1766.
He is mentioned as the father to two sons, Ezra and John who went to the 9 Partners settlement in PA.
His family is listed on pages 212 to 215 under Family 222.

830. Stephen Carpenter Deacon

Number 533 in the Carpenter Memorial on page 107.
His family is on page 202 (# 210).

Stephen moved to Cheshire or Adams, MA.  His family was born in Cheshire.
He served in the Revolutionary War as a soldier and was at the battle near
Bennington, VT on Aug. 16, 1777.  He served as deacon in the Elder Warden's
church and gave public exhortations.

Deacon Stephen Carpenter volunteered in Capt. Joab Stafford's company in 1777
and served six days.  Independent company of volunteers from New Providence,
Lanesboro, E. Hoosick and Gageboro.  Fought at Bennington. He served again the
second time as private in Samuel Low's company, Col. Benj. Simonds' regiment,
Oct. 13, 1786; served nine days in a Berkshire regiment on a northern alarm
under General Fellows.
p. 202 -- Carpenter Family by Amos B. 1898 Book has this listed under Stephen
Jr. -- he would only have been 10 yrs old in 1777 - so it must have been this
Stephen.  jc
A quote from "History of the Town of Cheshire, Mass: (taken from Generations
Past, A Carpenter Genealogy by Forrest Raymond Carpenter) "Stephen Carpenter,
as well as the Whitmarths, was from Providence, belonged to the same church,
and was one of the strong men of the colony.  He did not stop at the hill
proper but took up land farther to the west of the grant.  Deacon Stephen
Carpenter, an early comer, was at that time a man of note and influence,
successful in a worldly way.  His family are said to have been among the most
aristocratic people.  He settled north of the village in New Providence and his
home was built just below the point where "Pork Lane" merges into the old road
to Adams.  This street, so much travelled then, is now a grassy country lane,
the houses are old, some of them tumbled down, the stone walls are overgrown
with bushes and mountain flowers.  Still some good farms and farmers are found
there at present.  Mr. George Carpenter, a great grandson of the Deacon lives
in one of them."   (1885)

Do you want to hear something ironic --- as you know, I descend from William Sears Carpenter and my middle name of William is in his honor.
Now --- John Carpenter & Hannah Record leave CT and go to Windham, VT.  Then they remove to Cayuhoga Co., OH. I'm sure there was a very close friendship between John and my gr-grandfather Samuel D Bradner (Samuel went first to Becket, MA from Warwick, Orange NY and then to Cayuhoga, OH. The daughter of William Sears Carpenter married the son of Samuel D. Bradner. Now I have researched Joseph Carpenter & Susanna
Bradner and Susanna was the great aunt of my Samuel D Bradner and both myself and Joseph Carpenter are descended from the original Reheboth Carpenters (in fact just 2 times removed). Isn't this a strange twist of
things ??? I hope that the little knit-picking on the John Carpenter & Hannah Record line ( mostly with dates and places) isn't going to be a big job. Of course, you could always put a footnote since the original info comes from the CD's.

His family is on page 203 (#212). He was sometimes referred to as Jonah Whitmore because of his adoption, see note below.

Jonah's father was killed about the time he was born, and he was adopted by one Mr. Whitmore, probably Isaac Whitmore, father of Zeruiah whom he married.
Issac Whitmore of Thompson, CT married a clark and had six children and Zeruiah was his second child.
Jonah was a minute man in the Revolutionary war and went to Dorchester when the British invaded Boston.  See additional notes on page 108.
