1923: (From an uncited newspaper article which had the date "8-13-23" handwritten across the top.  The heading read "Married Sixty Years" and included a large photo, captioned "Mr. And Mrs. Miles D. Carpenter)
Mr. and Mrs. Miles D. Carpenter of 725 North Valley avenue, Olyphant, celebrate their sixtieth wedding anniversary tomorrow.  Mr. and Mrs. Harry Carpenter, the former a son of the aged couple will be hosts to the venerable husband and wife at their home, 827 North Valley avenue in the afternoon and evening.  The hosts and honor guests express the hope that all old neighbors and friends living in Olyphant or elsewhere will attend the reception.  A special invitation is extended to the members of Kingsbury lodge No. 466 E. & A.M., and their wives and to the Harper lodge I. O. O. F., Peckville and their wives.  Mr. Carpenter is the only surviving charter member of those lodges.  Officers of the Delaware and Hudson company and the Hudson Coal company of which Mr. Carpenter is the oldest living employee have already signified their intention of being present.  An orchestra has been hired to provide music for dancing and vocal organizations will entertain.  Preparations are being made to accommodate a great gathering.  It is expressly requested that no gifts be brought by those planning to attend.
The personal histories of Mr. and Mrs. Carpenter are interesting.  He was born in Harford, Susquehanna county, Pa. Jan 15, 1840, the second youngest of nine children.  Though now past eighty-three, he possesses remarkable vitality.  His father lived to be an octogenarian, and his mother attained the seventy-fifth milestone.  As a boy, Miles first worked on the farm, and attended school at Harford.  In 1855 he began working a car oiler at the foot of No. 5 plane above Carbondale for the Delaware and Hudson Canal Company.  In those days cars were lubricated by dipping a swab in the oil and smearing the journals with it.  Mr. Carpenter's parents, Mr. And Mrs. Tyler Carpenter, conducted a boarding house near the "curve" on the old gravity for the accommodation of drivers who were employed to pull cars along a level stretch for about a mile by means of horses.  After oiling cars for a year, Miles became substitute driver.  Then he became assistant train boss.
Mr. Carpenter came to Olyphant in June, 1863.  Coal was being mined in only two drafts, one at Grassy and one at No. 2 as it was called when I came to Olyphant.  Edwards Jones leased land from the Ferris family and operated the Grassy drift while the D. & H. mined at the No. 2 drift.  The D. & H. bought Mr. Jones' lease, I think and began sinking the first shaft in Olyphant by means of a gin pole and horse.  After the hole was down some distance, we began to hoist dirt in buckets.  After the top vein was reached it took about a year and a half to timber it and begin the mining of coal." Mr. Carpenter said in speaking of the early days in Olyphant.
Mr. Carpenter married Miss Olive Virginia Gooding, daughter of "Squire" and Mrs. John Gooding of Carbondale in that city, Aug 15, 1863.  The ceremony was performed by Rev. Bailey.  Mr. Carpenter was twenty-three and his wife twenty at the time of their marriage.
Mrs. Carpenter did not move to Olyphant to reside until March 1864 on account of the black fever being epidemic in that section.  Two children were born to Mr. And Mrs. Carpenter, viz. Harry, of 827 North Valley avenue, Olyphant, and Mrs. Nellie Norris, long since dead.  Five grandsons, Miles Jr., James, Lester, Robert and Wharton and one great grandson, William, constitute the rest of their progeny.
After being at the new Grassy shaft about two years Mr. Carpenter was transferred to the old No. 2 breaker where he was breaker engineer until the new Grassy Island breaker had been completed shortly before 1870, at which time he was appointed breaker engineer at the new breaker.  He held that position for thirty years.  When Grassy breaker was abandoned about twenty-three years ago, and the coal from Grassy shaft was diverted to the new Olyphant breaker, Mr. Carpenter became successively hoisting engineer at Miles slope, washery engineer, fan engineer, watchman, wash-house attendant, machine shop attendant and locomotive house attendant at Olyphant colliery.  He was relieved from active duty Feb. 23, 1923, but will be carried on the payroll of the Hudson Coal company as long as he lives.  The letter of appreciation sent him by the vice president of the Hudson Coal company is one of Mr. Carpenter's most valuable treasures.  The letter states Mr. Carpenter's record is "equalled by none" in the service of the Delaware and Hudson and its subsidiary, the Hudson Coal company.  All of Mr. Carpenter's time in industrial occupations has been spent with the Delaware and Hudson Canal company, Delaware and Hudson Railroad company and the Hudson Coal company.
Mr. Carpenter cast his first ballot for Abraham Lincoln, and he was a member of the school board that gave Mary Jane McHale her first position as school teacher fifty-one years ago in Olyphant.  He went through all the chairs of the Kingsbury lodge, F. & A. M., and Harper lodge, I.O.O.F., and prizes beautiful emblems given him by each of these organizations.  Some years ago when he was the guest of honor at banquets held to celebrate his fiftieth year of membership in each lodge.
Mr. Carpenter attributes his having attained such a ripe old age to "contentment of mind and the good cooking of my dear wife."
Mrs. Carpenter was born in Carbondale in 1843 and attended public and private school there.  When her father came to Carbondale, there was but one log house there.  He selected a spot for his family's future abode, went back to Vermont with his brothers, and brought his family from that distant point to Carbondale in the winter on a sleigh drawn by oxen.  Mrs. Carpenter, nee Miss Olive Virginia Godding, said: "Bears were not uncommon around Carbondale in the…. A familytreemaker personal genealogy report indicates a marraige date of August 4 rather than August 15, 1863.

(From an uncited newspaper article which had the date "8-13-23" handwritten across the top.  The heading read "Married Sixty Years" and included a large photo, captioned "Mr. And Mrs. Miles D. Carpenter)
...Mrs. Mrs. Carpenter, nee Miss Olive Virginia Godding, said: "Bears were not uncommon around Carbondale in the early days, for we used to secure our provisions well or else these animals would get our meals". Mrs. Carpenter and her husband have lived in the house they now occupy for more than half a century.

From a website which indicates that on November 5th, 1930, the Scranton Times listed the death of Olive V. Carpenter.  It is unclear whether she died on the 5th, or the article appeared on the 5th.  Need to check the microfilm.  The website info is as follows:

12714. Isaac Hobbs Carpenter

E-MAIL: Sun, 19 Mar 2000 From: Billie Geist
NOW AT - Dec 2007:     fibersfan@comcast.net
Hi John,
Thanks very much.  I still have a 'nagging' doubt about Isaac Hobbs Carpenter's
parentage. I remember my mother, Fern Mabel, many times mentioning 'those
Pennsylvania Dutch' when talking about her family.  It makes me question
whether Isaac's parentage is English or whether it's German.   But, then again,
those comments may have been made about the Koehler side of the family.
Also, Isaac's obit says he was born in NY state and moved to
Scranton, PA; then to Grand Ridge, LaSalle, IL and finally to Papillion, Sarpy,
NE. That just doesn't seem to fit with the locations of Cyril Carpenter
and Thirza Hobbs. I have asked a cousin to look through papers, she believes
she remembers a couple of names who may have been Isaac's siblings.
For purposes of your CD project, I'm just not sure this is correct yet.
(corrections given) Regards, Billie Geist.
