Descendants of William Carpenters of the Bevis (1638) Carpenter Cousins Encyclopedia of Carpenters - 2023 Update

Notes

995. Uriah Carpenter

Number 633 in the Carpenter Memorial on page 123.
Family on page 236 (# 243).
For some time Anna and Anne were thought to be the same person, but they
are now known as twins.
He enlisted in the service of his goverment and he bought land in Ashford, CT.

MARRIAGE:  There were TWO Uriah Carpenters in this time period.  According to
my records they both married a Sarah Hayward with the same birth date?
This makes it interesting since they both have a similarity of children!

I believe the Uriah Carpenter born in 1711 is the correct Uriah for Sarah
Hayward.  Billie Floyd listed only one child with descendants.  Anna born about
1746.  A correction was made placing the Sarah of Uriah born 1711 was done
for her descendants. JRC 1/2000.

Did he leave an unborn child?

Sarah Hayward

NOTE: After Uriah Carpenter died, she married a Mr. Eaton, he was the father of Gen.
Eaton who was consul to Algiers in 1811, and was a Major General of the U.S.
Army and who was made famous in the seige of Tripoli.

MARRIAGE:  There were TWO Uriah Carpenters in this time period.  According to
my records they both married a Sarah Hayward with the same birth date?
My guess is that this Sarah was born earlier than 1718.
I merged the two Sarah's together - I'll let someone else figure this one out!

William Carpenter
Birth: 24 Sep 1721 Swanson Corners, Hampshire County, Massachusetts, USA
Death: 9 Mar 1809 (aged 87) Stafford, Tolland County, Connecticut, USA
Burial: Wales Cemetery #1, Wales, Hampden County, Massachusetts, USA
Memorial #: 40967687
Bio:   (updated!)
Son of Benjamin and Mary (nee Barney) Carpenter.

Contributor Donna O, #47153920 provided the following:
Came to Wales in or about 1740; unascertained where from; here continued till 1782, then removed to Stafford, CT; there died, though his remains were brought to this Town for interment, beside his first wife. He was a man of some prominence here, had the "gift of gab" somewhat enlargedly; was for many years generally selected for Moderator at Town Meetings; and in 1779 he was elected and deputed as the Delegate from South Brimfield to the Convention held that year for the formation the the Constitution of our Sovereign Commonwealth. Not withstanding, tradition does not speak highly of him as a man of elevated, dignified moral principle, or as one posessed of unspottedness of moral character - as one possessing that virtue which pre-eminently constitutes man the "noblest work of God" - honesty. He is said to have been a particepator in the scheme of counterfeiting once concorted and developed Wales. However, in that case, his plentifulness and variegation of brains enabled him to escape detection, or at least to avert the thunderbolt of the law in such case made and provided, which some of his comrades could not, or did not do.** Witness, craftiness, and cunning were among the distinguishing traits by him possessed. His homestead was in the S. W. section of Wales, upon the premises herein elsewhere described and designated as the "Walbridge Place".

** The part in that transation of which he is understood to have been an assignee was to circulate or get into circulation, the coinage of the counterfieters, and he was to eagle-sighted and wary to get entrapped in the business.
Once sundry individuals of Wales leagued and confederated together to counterfeit the current coin of our country. Among the counfederates were this John Bound Moulton, Elnathan Munger, Jonathan Munger and William Carpenter. Their work was done in an unfrequented, secluded part of the S. - M section of the Town, and with much precaution, but they were detected, and two of the gang, J. B. Moulton and Munger, were punished by cropping the ear. The part of this Town where they made their coin has long been in colloquial phraseology hereabout called "Tunket," and the legendary tale is, that it got this name from the tunking noise made by the counterfeiters and which led to their detection.

1000. Benjamin Carpenter

Number 634 in the Carpenter Memorial on page 123.
Family  on page 237 and 238 (#244)

This Benjamin and his son Benjamin were on the military roll of a company
formed mostly in the town of Gilsum, under Col. Ashley, in the American
Revolution.  Benjamin enlisted in Elijah Week's Company, raised out of Col.
Ashley's Regiment of Militia in June 1777 to reinforce the Continental Army at
Ticonderoga. They marched 50 miles there and returned home, so ordered on July
3rd and 4th 1777.
Benjamin went a second time and marched to Col. Moody's Regiment at Otter Creek
and returned with the retreating army.  Benjamin of Surrey (probably this
Benjamin) enlisted July 28  (1777?) and was discharged (or his son was) Dec. 17
to recruit the Continental Army and both father and son served 6 months at this
time.

1001. Deacon Jotham Carpenter

Number 635 in the Carpenter Memorial on page 123.
His family is on page 238 (#245).
He was constable of Rehoboth in 1735.  A Farmer.
He served as Deacon of the Baptist Church in Rehoboth for a number of years,
and on removing from Rehoboth he was deacon of the Baptist Church in Cumberland until his death.
A petition to the inhabitants of Rehoboth made by Jotham Carpenter and others:
"WE THE SUBSCRIBERS, inhabitants at Palmer's River and other parts of the
township of Rehoboth, doth crave that favor of this town - that you would be so kind to grant us a piece of land for a burying place, school house and pound, there to set up a meeting-house where we may attend the worship of God in our way which we look may be more for our ease and convenience than now it is: and in doing so you will oblige your ever loving friends, -friends, we have paid our part to your meeting house which you did desire of us willingly, and we hope you will be as kind to us in this small request.
The land we desire is an angle of land lying between three cart roads at
the north end of Ebenezer Bullock's land, and containing of about a quater and
a half of an acre."   Dated June 20, 1720.
It was signed by Jotham Carpenter and others, and the same day it was read at the town meeting.
He mentions in his will: Wife freelove, sons Jotham, and Oliver, daughters,
Dorcas Bullock, Sybil Ingalls, Mehitable Mason, Elizabeth Carpenter, Freelove
Whipple and Desire Ballou.

Mayflower Society indicates ...
Copies of pp. 108-110 of a book called The John Billington Family were enclosed.  A footnote on p. 109 says "Contrary to the account in CARPENTER (REHOBOTH) GEN p. 238, 398-9, there is no indication that the sons Isaiah (Isaack in birth record) and Nathan lived to maturity.  The adults described as these sons of Jotham Carpenter do not belong to this family.  The adult "son" Nathan  is a composite of two other men named Nathan Carpenter, one of Connecticut and one of Rhode Island; and son Isaack, as 'Isaiah' is mistakenly identified as an adult Isaiah Carpenter of Vermont. "  NEITHER NATHAN OR ISAIAH ARE MENTIONED IN THE WILL!

E-MAIL: 30 Oct 2001  Per Sharilyn Whitaker at sharilyn@northcoast.com
In the Carpenter genealogy the wife of Jotham Carpenter, Jr.is given as Mehitable THOMPSON, with the marriage date of May 11, 1728 (245)*, however the record below says that *intentions* were posted 6 April 1728, between Jotham Carpenter, Jr, and Mehitable THURSTON which would indicate a marriage would have taken place the next month.
Vital Record of Rehoboth, 1642-1896. Marriages, Intentions, Births, Deaths, with Supplement containing the Record of 1896, Colonial Returns, Lists of the Early Settlers, Purchasers, Freemen, Inhabitants, the Soldiers serving in Philip's War and the Revolution.           Intentions
**Intentions**
Groom: Mehitable Thurston
Groom Residence: Rehoboth
Bride: Jotham Carpenter, Jr.
Bride Residence: Rehoboth
Int Date: 06 Apr 1728
There was a Mehitable Thurston born to John Thurston and Hannah Carey, the parents of the Sarah Thurston that married John Carpenter in Rehoboth in 1717. The Thurston genealogy gives her as having been married to a Nathaniel Huntington, but with no date given, and I found no other information on this marriage.
What does the (245) mean after this marriage record given in "A Genealogical History of the Rehoboth Branch of the Carpenter Family in America"? If is a number relating to any kind of documentation,  I couldn't figure it out by using the on-line version of the book.

E-MAIL: 31 Oct 2001 From:      Sharilyn Whitaker
Subject:      [CARPENTER] Mehitable Tompson w/o Jotham Carpenter, Jr.
In response to a recent question I posed to this list, I
received some wonderful information about Mehitable Tompson and
her family.  I thought that there might be others on this list
that would find this interesting and useful.
Regards,  Sharilyn
PS The marriage of Jotham Carpenter, Jr. to Mehitable THURSTON
that appears in VR of Rehoboth on Ancestry.com, was IN ERROR.

Div. of Est. of JOHN TOMPSON of Reho. that was set off to his
widow Hannah Tompson, div. to his childn.: Hannah (dau.) who was

wife of Robert Abell, pres. 5 Aug 1749. Comm: John Willmouth,

I then found the information on John Tompson.  He was married
twice, Elizabeth & Hannah.  He first lived in Reading, Middlesex Co.,
MA and then  Rehoboth.  His parents were George & Sarah
Tompson.  George was probably a  Scots prisoner from the Battle
of Dunbar who was sent to Massachusetts in  1652 and settled at
Lynn.  I have to do some more verifying on this point.   But it
would explain why info on this family is hard to find.  Many
histories  have been done on the pilgrims and Puritans and other
early immigrants, but  only recently has anything been collected
on deportees.>>

Samuel Bliss

GRAVE:

Capt Samuel Bliss
Birth: Jul. 25, 1730
Rehoboth
Bristol County
Massachusetts, USA
Death: Apr. 27, 1816
Taunton
Bristol County
Massachusetts, USA
American Revolution veteran of the Continental Line.
Samuel married three times.
1. Hannah Carpenter on 12 Jan 1755 at Rehoboth, MA. Hannah was the daughter of Jotham and Mehitable (Thompson) Carpenter. Hannah died 20 Feb 1757 at Rehoboth, MA.
2. Keziah Wilmarth on 2 Jun 1757 at Rehoboth, MA. Keziah was the daughter of Nathaniel and Mary (Perry) Wilmarth.
3. Lydia Perry on 3 Jan 1793 at Rehoboth, MA.
Samuel was a farmer who commanded a company of 43 Minute Men that marched on the alarm of April 19, 1775 to April 27, 1775. He also served as Captain in Colonel Timothy Walker’s (Bristol County) Regiment for eight months and served three years under Captain Slade. Captain Samuel served as General George Washington’s steward at Morristown in 1777. He is listed in the DAR’s Patriot Index, Centennial Edition, page 284.
Samuel Bliss's descendant, Etta M. (Bliss) Kendrick, joined the Daughters of American Revolution (DAR) in 1919 by citing him as her ancestor.
From Massachusetts Soldiers and Sailors in the War of the Revolution, Vol. I-XVII. Boston, MA, USA: Wright and Potter Printing Co., 1896: "Bliss, Samuel, Rehoboth. Captain of a company which marched on the alarm of April 19, 1775; service, 8 days; also, Col. Timothy Walker's (Bristol Co.) regt.; list of officers; commissioned May 24, 1775; also, returns for supplies, etc., for his company, dated Roxbury, June 8-July 25, 1775; also, muster roll dated Aug. 1, 1775; engaged April 28, 1775; service, 3 mos. 11 days; also, company return dated Oct. 6, 1775."
According to a sworn statement by Samuel, when applying for a pension, he enlisted in the “War of the Revolution as Searjeant [sic] in the Continental Establishment, for the term of three years in the Sixteenth Massachussetts…Regiment, commanded by Col. Henry Jackson.”
Additional records, such as The History of Rehoboth, Bristol County, Massachusetts, page 156, indicate he served in Capt. Slade’s Company. (It would appear that Samuel received the honorary moniker of “Captain” after the war, commemorating his minute-man service rank.)

Job Whipple
Birth:  Mar. 30, 1749
Death:  Sep. 18, 1822
Quincy
Adams County
Illinois, USA
Son of Ephraim Whipple and Sylvia Lapham.
A quaker
A manufacturer
Resided in Saratoga Springs, N.Y.
Settled in the Saratoga Patent, Albany County, Province of New York before 1779. His name appears on October 23rd, 1779 Saratoga District Tax List.
In 1780 a dam was built across the Battenkill by Frank Looker's house. A Mr. Carvine started it but sold out to Mr. Job Whipple of RI. Mr. Whipple came from Cumberland, RI. He came to Albany on horse back in search of land to where he could locate himself and his family. He found Mr. Carvine, who had purchased land here but had become discouraged and returned to Albany. Mr. Whipple was induced to visit Greenwich, where he moved the next year with his family. and commenced the struggle and hardship of a pioneer life.
There was but one dwelling besides his own in this locality. Having been reared in the Friend's Faith, he practiced his principles in his new settlement. By his energy and enterprise he soon drew others around him. He built another dam across the Kill, erected a saw mill, grist mill, and a wood-cording mill, in which his sons Daniel, David and Otis helped him.
Being a man of great integrity, many differences among his neighbors were referred to him. He was Justice of the Peace for many years, holding court at his own home. He established the first library.
After erecting his mills and finding surplus water supply in the Kill, he returned to RI for Mr. William Mowry. Mr. Mowry established the first cotton factory in NY State and the first in the country outside RI. In 1816 the company sent Mr. Mowry to England to visit the cotton mills and bring home all the improvements he could find (cotton manufacturing was not a sure thing). The English manufacturers, becoming alarmed at the rapid spread of this industry in America, had closed their doors to American merchants. Hence, Mr. Mowry had to conceal his mission but his eagerness betrayed him and he was thrown out as a Yankee spy.
Mr. Mowry married Job Whipple's daughter. He built the Blandy House. I believe his mill was later Mr. Palmer's. His yarn was jobbed out to women to weave. They rode horseback from Whitehall, Granville, and VT, for yarn to weave into cloth. They had their pay in yarn.
Union Village was on the Easton side and incorporated in 1809. It was previously known as Whipple City, deriving its name from Job Whipple, who obtained a deed for the village site in 1781. It is said that its name was changed from Whipple City to Union Village on account of the harmony and good will that prevailed among the inhabitants.

1004. Renew Carpenter

Number 638 in the Carpenter Memorial on page 124.
Married to Jabez Rounds, April 26, 1733.
Per corrections at the end of that book, page 837:  Jabez Rounds should read
Jabez Read.  However - DAR records has him as Jabez Round.

Jabez Rounds

NAME: MAYBE READ instead of ROUNDS.  See wife's notes.

1005. Desire Carpenter

Number 639 in the Carpenter Memorial on page 124.
Married Hezekiah Hix, April 15, 1738.
Married Jacob Carpenter about Sept 1753.

The Desire Carpenter who married Jacob Carpenter was probably a widow who had
been married to Hezekiah Hix in 1738.  The children of Jacob and Desire were
born in July 1754 and 1756.  The marriage date assigned on page 80 was probably
for Jacob's first marriage.

Hezekiah Hicks

Probably married twice.  First to a Sarah or Sally abt 1734.  Information suggests this only.
NAME:  HIX or Hicks.  Hicks is correct.

Jacob Carpenter

Number 258 in the Carpenter Memorial.  Page 80
Family on page 138 (#116).

1006. Esther Carpenter

Not in the Carpenter Memorial.
For some reason Esther is not listed among the children of Jotham born at
Rehoboth, however, she is listed among his children in his will.    The
Billington Family Genealogy  does include Esther in the children of Jotham.
pages 65,  lists names of Jothams children and also contains a portion of his
will.  On page 145 it lists both of Esthers marriages and her children.
(Esther's grandmother was Mercy Billington)  Not only is Esther included, it
lists both of her marriages, names of her husbands and children.

1007. Hezekiah Carpenter
