Birth:  Feb. 8, 1839

New York, USA
Death:  Jan. 22, 1902
Janesville
Rock County
Wisconsin, USA
From Commemorative Biographical Record of the Counties of Rock, Green, Grant, Iowa and Lafayette, Wisconsin, publ. 1901 - page 799-800
JOHN W. CARPENTER has been a resident of the city of Janesville, Rock County, for many years, and in that time he has won a standing in business circles, and as an intelligent and progressive citizen, of which any man might be proud. He has met all his business engagements promptly, and his word has ever been beyond question. He has built up a good trade in the coal and wood line, and those who have dealt with him longest are the best friends he has in the city.
Mr. CARPENTER was born at Northville, Fulton Co., N.Y., Feb. 9, 1839, a son of Allen D. and Mary Ann (WADSWORTH) CARPENTER, both also natives of Fulton County. Children as follows were born to them: John W.; Laura, wife of Nathaniel BALLARD, of Evansville, Wis.; William H., of Evansville; Mary Ann, Mrs. McKINNEY, of Evansville; Josiah, of Union township, Rock County; and Emma, wife of Edwin WINTERS, of Evansville. The father was originally a cabinet maker, but became a carpenter and joiner. In 1855 he came to Wisconsin and settled on an eighty-acre farm in Union township, Rock County. After a time he acquired as much more land, and gave his attention to the improvement and cultivation of what speedily became a choice and valuable farm. He died on that place Jan. 21, 1861, aged about forty-six years. His wife survived him until 1894, and was past seventy-six years of age at her death. Joseph CARPENTER, the grandfather of John W., was a native of Vermont, and was a carpenter and joiner by occupation. He was the father of a numerous family. He died in New York when over sixty years of age. Josiah WADSWORTH, the father of Mrs. Mary A. CARPENTER, was born on Long Island and was one of the earliest settlers of Fulton County, N.Y., where he reared his family of fifteen children. When he died he was well on toward eighty years of age.
John W. CARPENTER was reared on a farm, and received his elementary schooling in the district school at Hope Center, N.Y. He was sixteen years old when he came West with his parents, and his home has been in Rock County ever since. For the past twenty-five years he has lived in Janesville. On reaching manhood he started out for himself as a farmer, renting land the first two years. He bought a farm of 183 acres in the town of Union, which he brought to a high state of cultivation, and then sold. He bought another farm, consisting of 280 acres, and made very substantial improvements on this tract, which he converted into a desirable home, dwelling there some time. Some twenty-five years ago, renting the farm, Mr. CARPENTER moved into Janesville to engage in the wood and coal business. He retained the ownership of the farm until a few years ago, when he thought it wise to enlarge his business in the city. Our subject is a Republican, and was a supervisor of Center township some two or three terms.
Mr. CARPENTER and Miss Sarah Jane PARKER, daughter of Isaac and Maria (SOPER) PARKER, were married March 20, 1861, and they have had three children, Jessie, Charles and Lulu. Jessie married David CREIGHTON, and has her home in Whitewater; they have one child, Catherine. Charles married Huldah BALKE, and resides in Janesville; he is a brakeman on the railroad. Lulu, formerly a teacher in the Janesville public schools, married James WADDLE.

After a lingering illness William Carpenter, the well known coal dealer, passed away Saturday evening. Although in failing health since the first of the year he continued at his office until about two months ago. He was closing up the best year's business in the thirty years' experience, preparatory to taking a rest, intending to pay his youngest daughter a visit, when a recurrent attack of chronic trouble forced him to lay aside all work. His last illness was cheered by the constant attention of his wife and daughters and sister, Mrs. E. Winter.
William Carpenter was the son of Allan and Mary Ann Wadsworth Carpenter. He was born March 22, 1842, in Hamilton county, New York. When a boy of twelve years he moved with his parents to this vicinity and has since made it his home.
Upon Christmas Eve 1863, he was united in marriage to Miss Elizabeth Ballard. Their eldest child, William H. Carpenter, Jr. was born in 1865, but lived to be but seven years of age.
The deceased is survived by his wife and two daughters, Miss Cora and Mrs. Orlin D. Lyons of Marquette, Mich.
Mr. Carpenter was gifted with that great quality, that of making and keeping close friendships and this has proved no small element in his success. He was warm hearted and generous to a marked degree. His sympathy for the unfortunate led him to many kindnesses that came with a certainty and directness that is rare. For years the sick and the friendless have had ample proofs of his goodness of heart. He had a reputation for business integrity that is enviable.
He will be mourned and missed by all of Evansville but most by those who knew of him in his home and immediate neighborhood.
The deceased was a member of both the Odd Fellows and Masonic fraternities, and both orders were in attendance at his funeral which occurred from the residence Tuesday afternoon.
In the home in which he had spent the last 25 years, beautifully decorated with flowers and thronged with relatives and friends, D. Quincy Grabill conducted the funeral service. Mrs. Fannie Denison rendered two exquisite
vocal solos. The honorary pall bearers, friends of long standing were: W. H. H. Johnson, O. G. Griffith, W. H. Walker, J. W. Morgan, G. C. Roberts, and William Stevens.
At the close of this service the Masons took charge and concluded the solemn rites at Maple Hill cemetery.
Among those who were here from out of town were: Mr. and Mrs. Fred McKinney and sons, Clinton, Wis., Mrs. Emma Winters, Sioux Falls, S. D., Mr. Allen Carpenter, Janesivlle, Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Carpenter, Beloit, Mrs. Jessie Creighton, Whitewater, Mrs. Mary Adams, Trempeleau, Mrs. Eva Jones, Chicago; Mr. Josiah Blake, Milwaukee, Mrs. F. D. Slawson, Janesville, Mr. O. E. Sprague, of the Kanawha Fuel Co., Milwaukee, Mr. and Mrs. Harold Winters, Monroe and Mr. and Mrs. Charles White of Edgerton.

HOLDEN--CARPENTER
A very pretty wedding took place at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Josiah Carpenter, Wednesday evening, Feb. 21st, 1906, at 8 o'clock, when their daughter, Ada May Carpenter was united in marriage to Mr. Ray Holden, son of Mr. and Mrs. Michael Holden. The ceremony was performed by Rev. A. B. Parry, pastor of the Free Baptist church. The bride and groom were attended by the bride's brother Ray Carpenter and Miss Jessie Smith. About one hundred relatives and friends witnessed the ceremony. The bride was attired in a beautiful gown of blue, trimmed with cream lace; the groom wore the conventional black.
After the ceremony and congratulations, the guests were seated at tables and served with a delicious wedding supper, the Misses Decker, Purinton, Hall and Covell did the serving.
The bride and groom are highly respected young people in this city and vicinity, and a host of friends join The Badger in extending most hearty congratulations. The bride was the recipient of many beautiful and useful presents. For some months past, the groom has been one of the trusty employees at the Baker Shops. Within a few days the happy couple will be cosily settled in the Richardson house on Maple Ave., where they will be pleased to see their many friends.
Among the out-of-town guests present were: Mrs. Cora Lynch of Hatfield, Minn., Mrs. Maggie Fitch, of Madison, and Mr. and Mrs. Fred McKinney and family of Edgerton.
