Biography of Edward H. Ehle (1841 to [past 1891])
Provided by Darci (Djohns genealogy web page) Daniel H. Weiskotten 8/10/1999.
Edward Ehle (1841 to [past 1891]) From Biographical History of Clark and
Jackson Counties (Wisconsin), Lewis Publishing Co., pages 307-308
Edward A. EHLE, of Abbotsford, Clark County [Wisconsin], was born in Cazenovia,
Sullivan [Madison] County, New York, June 8, 1841, the son of Harrison
Ehle, deceased, who was born in the Mohawk Valley, near Canajoharie.
In 1851 he emigrated to Fond du Lac County, Wisconsin and settled in the wild
woods of Forrest Township. He and his sons cleared eighty acres and were
surrounded with Indians, mostly the Winnebago and Manitowoc tribes.
Edward A., our subject, was reared to farm life, and received his education in
a log cabin, with pine-logs for seats, and with a shed roof made of scoops. He
was a soldier in the late war in Company H, Thirty-seventh
Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry, served two and a half years, and was in the
battles of Cold Harbor, Bermuda
Hundred, siege of Petersburg, Weldon Railroad, Poplar Grove Church, Fort Hall,
and others. He was not seriously wounded, but had a slight flesh wound on his
neck over the jugular vein, and also had several holes shot in his clothing,
and on the Weldon raid had his canteen split open.
After the war Mr. Ehle resumed farming on the old homestead until January,
1874, when he came to Colby, [Wisconsin] this county, but settled just across
the line in Marathon County. Wild game was then plentiful, and he shot
hundreds of deer and a few bear, but declining health caused him to leave this
farm, and in 1888 he removed to Colby.
On May 20, 1890, he settled in Abbotsford, (WI) where he engaged in the saloon
and hotel business. He keeps a quiet house, and never sells to an intoxicated
man. Mr. Ehle was married November 30, 1869, to Miss Melissa
Carpenter, a daughter of Henry and Maria (Westenhouse) Carpenter. The father is
deceased, and the mother now lives with our subject.
Mr. and Mrs. Ehle have four children: Edna, born October 7, 1870; Edward A.,
November 25, 1873; Marshall P., April 1, 1882, and Madge, January 21, 1884.
While in Green Township, Marathon County, Mr. Ehle was a member of the Side
Board. Socially he is a member of the G.A.R., and politically votes for the man
regardless of party.

Subject: [Carpenter Cousins Google Groups] NE PA CarpentersThanks for letting me join your group. I'm just getting back into some family research I started several years ago. My Carpenter ancestors moved from RI to PA around 1800. They settled in an area a little northwest of Scranton. The earliest ancestor I'm sure of is Oliver Carpenter, born 1803 in what is now Clinton Township, Wyoming County. (That is where I grew up, in what used to be called Carpenter Hollow.) His wife was Celinda Wight and I have a copy of a very old Bible with her name in it. Their son Wesley was my great-grandfather. He was father to William whose son Glenn was my dad.
I think Oliver is the son of a Benjamin Carpenter and Freelove Bailey, who moved to PA with their oldest son, Peleg. The 1800 septennial census and the 1810 census have a Benjaimin Carpenter in Tunkhannock, a few miles from Clinton Twp,. From 1820 through 1840 there was a Benjamin in Nicholson, also only a few miles away. Ancestry.com has a copy of his will probated in 1844 mentioning Oliver, Peleg and seven other children.
I had posted a query online some years ago about Benjamin and was answered by a Larry Carpenter who said that DNA evidence proved that Benjamin was a descendant of William of Rehoboth. He also said nobody had shown a direct line. I wondered if any new evidence had come out since then? Currently I'm thinking that Benjamin's father might have been Ephraim b 1753, to Jeremiah, son of Daniel, son of Solomon who may have been the son of William's son Samuel. This is just guesswork though.
Any help would be appreciated!
Thanks,
Marty CarpenterANCESTRY: Cameron and Byrd Family Trees by Sheryl Byrd

NAME:
Per the father in laws will, the surname of Casswell is given.NOTE:
Per Marty Carpenter myrtrat@live.com
Maybe the clerk thought the name was Casswell and wrote it that way, but Sarah married Bartholomew Capwell, also from Carpenter Hollow. And we know where he's buried, for a change: https://www.ancestry.com/discoveryui-content/view/152817448:60525
Sarah doesn't seem to be buried with him. I think she died before he did. But you can find him on the 1860 Clinton Twp census as "B Capwell" and the 1870 census as "Bartha Capwell" and Sarah is with him. I think he's listed as "S Capwell" in 1850, and counted as a female, but his son Lester is also counted as a female, so I'd say it was a clerical error.FSFTID # LHQS-7N6
