Belle Carpenter
Birth:  Jul. 21, 1877
Missouri, USA
Death:  Mar. 24, 1954
Salem
Marion County
Oregon, USA
Belle’s cremated remains were never taken after her death and are still available at the Oregon State Hospital to be claimed by anyone who is related. More information about unclaimed cremains at OSH is available at http://www.oregon.gov/oha/amh/osh/pages/cremains.aspx A book by David Maisel and a short documentary film by Ondi Timoner & Robert James, both entitled "Library of Dust" also provide more information.
Belle was born in July 1877 in Missouri to Edwin Carpenter and Marie Gould. Her father was born in Vermont about 1826 and her mother was born in Wisconsin in the 1840s. Belle’s siblings included Bertie Leon (born in Missouri in July 1876), Vina (Missouri about 1879), William (Kansas in 1880). Vina, William and two other unidentified siblings did not survive childhood. In various censuses it was often reported Belle was unable to read and write although the others in her family were literate.
During the census of 1880 Belle was 2 years old and living with her parents and siblings in Stranger, Leavenworth County, Kansas. Her father was a farmer. In 1880 he and Belle’s sister, Bertie were sick with “ague,” an illness involving fever and/or chills. Siblings William and Vina died between 1880 and 1885. In the Kansas censuses of 1885 and 1895 Belle was living with her parents and sister Bertie in Stranger.
Sister Bertie married Charles S. Mears about 1899. Charles was a farmer born in 1870 in Ohio. In the 1900 census Belle was living in Stranger, Kansas with her widowed mother, sister Bertie and Charles Mears. During the 1905 Kansas census Belle and her mother lived in Leavenworth, Kansas with Bertie and her family. In the 1910 censuses Belle and her mother were living in Battle Ground, Clark County, in southern Washington with Bertie, Charles and their children. Charles supported the family as a hay farmer. At the time of the 1920 census Belle and his mother were living in Kent, Sherman County, in north central Oregon with Belle’s sister Bertie and her family. Brother-in-law Charles owned and operated a chicken farm. At some point in the 1920s Belle’s mother died. During the 1930 census Belle was living in Corvallis, Benton County, in the Willamette Valley of Oregon with her sister and brother-in-law and 4 of their children.
Belle’s nieces and nephews, Bertie’s children, included: Charles R. (born in 1901 in Kansas), Ruth Leon (about 1904 in Kansas), James T. (about 1907 in Oregon), Esther (about 1911 in Washington), Mary T. ( about 1913 in Washington), John W. (in 1916 in Washington) and Joseph A. (about 1919 in Oregon). Bertie had two other children who died in childhood.
On 12/5/1931 she was admitted to the Oregon State Hospital, a residential facility in Salem, Oregon for the treatment of people with mental illness. During the 1940 census Belle was listed among the patients at the state hospital. She continued to live at the institution for over 22 years and she died there of heart problems on 3/24/1954 at the age of 76. She was single her entire life. Sister Bertie died in Clackamas County, Oregon on 4/29/1967 and was buried with her husband in Washington.

Benjamin Austin Richardson

Benjamin Austin Richardson was born at Wolcott, Wayne , New
York, April 30, 1843.  Removed with parents, April 30, 1859 to
Delaware,,OH and from there in February 1861 to Dublin, Wayne
,,IN, from which place he enlisted July, 1862 in the
84th Indiana volunteer infantry. He served immediately after
enlistment in the repulse of Kirby Smith's invasion of Kentucky
and afterward put in the winter of 1863 and 1864 in the Kanawha
campaign in West Virginia.  His regiment was then transferred to
the army of the Cumberland, where he participated in the
campaign from Nashville. This campaign terminated in the battle
of Chickamauga, the capture and holding of Chattanooga, the key
to the South, and he was one of that forlorn hope, with
Whittaker's brigade, Steadman's division, Granger's corps, who
rallied around "The Rock of Chickamauga" (Gen. George H. Thomas)
that Sunday afternoon, Sept.20, 1863, on Snodgrass Hill, when
the entire right of the army had been swept from the field,
saving the day to the Union cause. He was in all the battles
thereafter on what was known as the Atlanta campaign with 1st
brigade, 2nd division, 4th army corps.  He was mustered out at
the close of the war at Indianapolis,,IN where he has since
lived.  He was for ten years cashier of the Indianapolis Gas
Light & Coke  leaving their employ to engage in the insurance
business which avocation he has unremittingly pursued for twenty
years as local agent, state agent and adjuster for various
companies.  He was a member of the first military company
organized in Indianapolis after the war and was made captain of
a company of the national guard which was called for him "The
Richardson Zouaves" which became prize winners in many states
both north and south.  This company with its prize money built
the first armory and drill hall ever erected in Indiana as the
private property of a military company. Resigning the captaincy
of the Richardson Zouavea he was induced to accept the captaincy
of division two, uniform rank K.of P. and after successful
campaigns as prize winner with this company he was promoted to
colonel of the 1st regiment Indiana U. R. K. of P., commanding
the regiment for six years, when he was appointed colonel and
aid-de-camp on the staff of Maj.-Gen. James R. Carnahan
commanding U. R. K. of P. the world.  He was appointed colonel
and inspector of rifle practice on the staff of Gov. A. P. Hovey
and served as such until the expiration of the governor's term
of office. By Gov. James A. Mount he was appointed in 1897
quartermaster general of the state of Indiana with rank of
brigadier general which position he now holds.
In 1860 at the age of seventeen he connected himself with the
Presbyterian church at Delaware,,OH under the pastorate of
Rev. Dr. Newton, and at the close of the war became a member of
the Second Presbyterian church of Indianapolis,,IN (Beecher's
church) under the pastorate of Rev. Hanford A. Edson, D. D.  In
1876 he assisted in establishing the mission church called
Memorial Presbyterian church, which he has since served as
deacon and ruling elder.2  SOUR S203
