WILLIAM RAY. In all ages of the world, industry, perseverance and energy, where intelligently applied, have achieved a re- sult which could only have been gained by having one object in view, and improving every oppor- tunity to ultimately attain that object. Mr. Ray is an example of what can be accomplished when the spirit of determination is exercised in connec- tion with the everyday affairs of life. His farm- ing operations have resulted very satisfactorily, and he now controls, and is in the enjoyment of. a comfortable competency. He was born in Rich- land Township, Fountain Count}', 111., in 1831, a son of Jefferson and Elsie (Smith) Raj-, natives of the State of Kentucky. Jefferson Ray settled in Richland Township, of this county, at an early day, and purchased land from John Hamilton, on which he continued to reside until his death, in 1887, at which time he owned one hundred and twenty acres of as fine farming land as one need wish to see. The father of our subject had the following children: P. who married A. D. Sayne, and is re- siding in Butler Township; A. M., who married Jessie Powers; John, a farmer, who married Kittie Cates, and died in Louisiana in 1884; Laura, who became the wife of James McCollister, a farmer of Fountain County; Caroline; Mary, who became the wife of Frank Marks; V., who became the wife of John Crane, a farmer of Fountain County; Vic- toria, wife of John Lane; Katherine, wife of J. Dine, a farmer of Illinois; Julia, who became the wife of Will Coffee; Creta, who became the wife of Harry Dine, a farmer of this county; and William, the subject of this sketch. The latter was mar- ried to Miss Mary J. Carpenter, daughter of Ben- jamin and Sophia Carpenter. She was born in Fountain County, Ind., in 1840, and married Mr. Ray in the early part of 1879. Of the children born of this union, Artio, born November 19, 1879, was reared on the home farm, and educated in the public schools; Effie, born September 6, 1881, is at home, and attends the common school; Annie, born May 22, 1883, and Butler, born February 6, 1887, are at home. Mr. Ray was educated in the common schools, and when starting out in life for himself it was but natural that he should take upon himself the duties of farming, for to that occupation he had been reared. After farming on rented land for some time, he secured enough means to enable him to purchase one hundred and ninety-three acres of land, which he has since greatly improved. His residence is a good and substantial one, and he has an excellent farm and outbuildings of all de- scriptions. He learned what hard work was in his youth, but he also learned lessons of industry, economy and steadiness, that were his stepping- stones to success in after years. All measures of moralit}-, education, temperance and others of like nature find in him a strong advocate. Mr. Ray and his wife are worthy members of the church, and he is liberal in the use of his means in its support, and is an active worker in the Sun- day-school. He is a Democrat in his political views, and at all times supports the men and measures of that party, but has never been an as- pirant for office, the duties of his farm fully oc- cupying his time and attention. His success as a tiller of the soil is due to the fact that attention has been given to no particular department at the expense of another, but every nook and cranny of his farm is carefully looked after, and in looking 680 PORTRAIT AND BIOGRAPHICAL RECORD. over Lis farm one is at once impressed with the idea that a man of discrimination has the manage- ment of affairs. His upright career through life has made him a general favorite, and he numbers his friends by the score.

Number 8975 in the Carpenter Memorial on page 825.
Retired OCT 1922.

CENSUS:  1870 US Census - with mother who remarried Aaron Lodge.

Blacksmith and then Farmer. Superintendent of the Warehouse and yards for
South Penn Oil Company member Methodist Episcopal Church.
After William and Ida got married they lived in Bridgeport. He worked for his
father in law as a blacksmith for a number of years. Later they moved to the
Robert Minor farm on Simpson Creek and farmed for a few years. Later the came
to Salem and purchased a home from Harry J. Williamson. In 1896 Bill became a
foreman of the pipe yard for the South Penn Oil Company. He later became a
gauger  for the South Penn Oil Company and was in their employment for 20
years. While employed by the oil company he became the  "Superintendent of the
Warehouse and Yards" for a number of years. At the age of 71 years the oil
company placed him on the pension retirement list.
William was a member of the council of Salem when that community was known as a
borough. He served as Chief of Police of the borough. Later he became a member
of the City Council and was head of the committee that purchased the first fire
truck. For his activities in building up the fire department the Salem Fire
Department made William a life time member and honorary chief, presenting him
with a gold badge. He stayed active in  Fire Department activities and attended
meetings regularly.
He was also very prominent in Masonic circles, being a member of all Masonic
and Scottish Rite bodies. He was made a Mason at the Hermon Lodge No. 6,
Ancient, Free and Accepted Masons, Clarksburg. He was also a charter member of
Late Lodge No 63 A.F. and A.M.Bridgeport. He became Master of his lodge at

William loved to read and had excellent eyesight and owned a very large number
of books. One year in his garden he raised 16 bushel of potatoes and large
number of vegetables. Each day he smokes six to eight "stoggies".
In a letter from Karl Carpenter ( son of William) to his son Harold in 1961 he
stated" Dad was too young to get into the Army. I have heard Dad say he had
seen fights when some boy told another that his Dad was paying for his
schooling ( this was before the free school system was established). Sally and
Fanny's Dad drove a team of 2 horses and hauled food to the Army. So did Genius
Payne - in fact he was forced to do it as he was too young for the Army. "

NOTE: Kemble Stout, James Pindall Stout 1819 - 1903 and Burthena Shackelford
Kemble 1824 - 1908. Their Ancestors and Descendants; ; Kemble Stout, N.E. 1115
Orchard Drive, Pullman, WA 99163, March 2, 1975; ; ; As most of you know the
preparation of this book has required a large amount of correspondence during
the past few years. It became evident that a certain amount of travel would be
necessary in order to successfully track down all the descendants of James and
Burthena Stout and obtain vital statistics and biological information.  This
gave Mildred and me the excuse for very rewarding trips during the summer of
1974 and during my recent Christmas vacation. I was able to visit with all my
first cousins, several of whom I met for the first time. I also met all but two
of my second cousins, many of whom I did not even know existed before I started
this project.  Without exception all have been cooperative, even though
sometimes show, in providing me with the needed material.  I am especially
grateful to all these cousins for entrusting me with their irreplaceable family
pictures.

I feel that I have a fine group of cousins and believe that if my great
grandparents Stout could view their 325 descendants, they would be very proud
of the family.
Kemble Stout.

18700. Simon Carpenter

BIRTH: Jan 1868, 1868 and at death 8 Jan 1865.  He was born a Srouf and when his mother remarried Carpenter, he later took the name Carpenter as his last name. The various censuses are consistent with 1868. SO, it is possible that the death record with 1865 is wrong?  And Carpenter is the biological father after all?  YES! It was wrong!
A Y-DNA test of a descendant of this Simon shows the genetic markers to be consistent with Group 3 of the Carpenter Cousins Y-DNA Project. The conclusion is that Simon had a biological Carpenter father.
