DEATH SUDDENLY CLAIMS JAMES LACKIE SATURDAY
Deceased Came to Clare When Lad of Twelve. Was Engaged in Hotel Business'Death claimed James Lackie last Saturday afternoon about four-thirty while on an errand at Grand Blanc from his home at Flint. He had been about the home in the forenoon and following the mid-day lunch he suggested to his wife that they take a short drive, and was leaving a feed store in Grand Blanc where he made several purchases, when death suddenly claimed him.
Although Mr. Lackie had been in poor health of the past year, he never complained or gave the family any cause to be alarmed over his condition, and his untimely departure was a severe shock to his faithful helpmate and family.

In 1887 he was united in marriage to Miss Leona Reynolds of this city, and they continued to make their home in Clare and vicinity until eight years ago, when they moved to Flint. This home was blessed by three children, Arthur, who passed away in infancy, Leonard, whose death occurred in 1918, and Mrs. Gladys Hampton, of Clare.
Mr. and Mrs. Lackie entered the Central Hotel in 1902 and operated this hostelry over the most of a period of twenty years. Since residing at Flint Mr. Lackie had been employed at the Buick factory and with the Fisher Body Works.
Six grandchildren, Gerald Nivinson, Harry Wayne and Roberta Lackie, of Flint, and Leona Lea and Betty Jane Hampton, together with the daughter and widow, are left to mourn his demise. He also enjoyed a large circle of friends and acquaintances in this city and in Flint.
After the necessary arrangements were made at Flint, the body was brought to the home of Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Hampton Sunday evening and services were held Wednesday afternoon, conducted by Rev. Dawe and burial made in Cherry Grove Cemetery.
Those from a distance attending the last rites were Mr. and Mrs. Colin McDonald, Mr. and Mrs. Rollie Adair, and children, Mr. and Mrs. George Bennett and Manley Reynolds, of Flint; Mr. and Mrs. B. M. TERRIBLE TRAGEDY
Leonard Lackie Accidentally KilledA sad tragedy was enacted on the farm of James Lackie two miles north of this city on Thursday of last week. Just how it came about can only be conjectured as it had no witness, but in the twinkling of an eye a promising young life was blotted out.
On the forenoon of that day Leonard had assisted his father James Lackie in putting roofing on the porch of the hotel. About two o'clock he left for the farm two miles north of this city, presumably to hunt rabbits as he had told his wife but a short time before that he was getting hungry for some rabbit meat. About four o'clock the father went tto the farm to do the usual chores, not knowing that the son had gone there and on going to the barn found the body near the door, a portion of the head literally blown off and the brains scattered around. A gun had been kept at the barn and this was found beside the body.
The body was brought to this city and brief funeral services conducted at the home of the father by Rev. Davis on Sunday afternoon with burial in Cherry Grove.
Leonard was born in this city on August 8, 1891 and had lived here all his life. On August 23, 1911, he was married to Miss Leah Terry and they have three children. Beside the wife and children, he leaves his parents, one sister, Mrs. Jessie Hampton and numberous other relatives and friends.
Those from a distance who attended the funeral were Mrs. Lorena Campbell and Mr. and Mrs. Ray Jameson of Detroit, Mr. R. M. Hail of Ithaca and Mrs. Mary Lackie of Mt. Pleasant. (The Clare Sentinel - Clare, MI – 26 December 1918)
