Carpenter to Rest Beside Wife in Iowa. Funeral of Pioneer Held at Residence Yesterday Afternoon. Body Will be Sent to Emerson, Ia., Today for Burial.
A large number of old-time South Omaha friends attended the funeral of the late L. J. Carpenter yesterday afternoon at the family residence, on the Fort Crook Boulevard. The body will be sent to Emerson, Ia., today for burial. The late Mrs. Carpenter, wife of the deceased, is buried at Emerson. Mr. Carpenter was 60 years of age. He passed away late Thursday night, after an illness of several weeks. His death was not unexpected. One daughter, Mrs. Erle Brown, survives.
The deceased was one of the best known men in this section of the state. He was a pioneer citizens and business man of South Omaha. He came to South Omaha from Iowa thirty years ago, and engaged in the transfer business. A few years ago he retired from active business here and purchased a farm on the Fort Crook Boulevard. Here he enjoyed outdoor life until his late illness came. It was perhaps the active outdoor work that prolonged his life. Mr. Carpenter had a large number of friends in this locality, who extend their sympathy to Mrs. Brown.11
NoteB* Omaha World-Herald 3 Jul 1900:
Off For Kansas City. A number of dyed-in-the-wool bourbons of this city will be in evidence when the democratic clubs of Omaha leave for the national convention today. Most of them will go with the Jacksonian Club, which leaves via the Burlington this morning at 11 o’clock. It is hardly probable that many of them will return before Thursday. Among those who start today are: James H. Bulla, L.J. Carpenter. . .
Omaha World-Herald, 17 Aug 1901:
Carryalls for Ferry. There is now a demand for a better service to and from the ferry landing. The beautiful grove on the opposite side of the river is attracting many people and the ferry company is constantly adding to the roads and the line. Among the leading liverymen there are the Holmes-Adkins Company, L. J. Carpenter and George Burke, who, it is stated, will soon have a carryall service to the river. The new grove unveiled to South Omaha people by reason of the new ferry line is a great attraction and travel back and forth from Iowa is increasing at a rapid rate.11

Omaha World-Herald, 14 Jun 1903:
Wedding at Carpenter’s. In the presence of only the home relatives the marriage of Earl B. Brown and Miss Jessica A. Carpenter was solemnized at the home of the bride’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. L. J. Carpenter, last evening a 6:30 o’clock. Rev. Robert L. Wheeler, pastor of the Twenty-fifth Street Presbyterian Church, performed the ceremony. The bridesmaid was Miss Mary Rawley, a well-known teacher in the city schools, while Mr. Vern Mann was the groomsman. Immediately after the ceremony, a luncheon was served, after which Mr. and Mrs. Brown took a train for Clinton, Ia., their future home.
Both the bride and groom are well known and well liked in South Omaha. The groom was for many years employed at Swift here and later was transferred to Clinton, Ia., where he is now manager for the Swift branch house. He is regarded as an exemplary young man of fine business ability. The bride is among South Omaha’s fairest daughters and has lived here since babyhood, her parents being of the first pioneers. She is much admired in church and social circles, and is prominent as a musician, having served during the past year as supervisor of music in the city schools.
The wedding was kept almost a profound secret and no invitations were issued. However, as soon as it was known at all yesterday that the event was to take place so soon, many costly and beautiful presents began to arrive at the Carpenter home.
Omaha World-Herald, 10 Apr 1905:
South Omaha Brevities. Mrs. Earl Brown, nee Jessie Carpenter, had a narrow escape from severe injuries in a runaway accident Saturday evening. She escaped, fortunately with only slight. . . .7
