Elizabeth "Betsey" Anway

NOTE:
Anway may have been a maiden name? Yes! See below.

E-MAIL: Thu, 10 Feb 2000 From: "Mark Anway"
Your rootweb Archive of August 16 1999 indicated that Elizabeth ANWAY
Ryerdon may have had the married name of ANWAY.  It is our family's belief
that Elizabeth ANWAY first married a Mr. RYERDON and then William CARPENTER.
Elizabeth has been referred to as the "Widow Ryerdon".
It is generally believed that Elizabeth Anway was the fourth child of
George and Sarah NANNEY.  You might know this already, that George NANNEY
lived in Goshen, Orange County, New York in 1775 and then moved onto Scipio,
Cayuga County, New York.  Between 1798 and 1811, George Nanney changed is
surname to ANWAY.  We have proof dated June 28, 1820 at 9:00AM, Caygua
County Court House of that.  We have had difficulty determining the birth
dates of George's and James NANNEY's, (then ANWAY's) children.  The Delaware
County, Ohio history indicates that the ANWAY(s) came to Kingston Township,
Ohio from Pennsylvania in 1811.  Your facts indicating that William B.
CARPENTER was born in 1790 in Kingtson, Luzerne, P.A. holds a clue.
Thank you for any response.
Mark Richard Anway.

Elizabeth Hewitt was born in 1779 in Kingston, Luzerne Cnty, Pennsylvania.  In March of 1798 in Goshen, she married James Carpenter of Goshen, Orange County, New York.  They both died in Delaware County, Ohio, he in 1821, she in 1837.
Elizabeth was the posthumous child of Dethic Hewitt, who was killed in the July 3, 1778 Wyoming Massacre.  Many of the survivors escaped to Goshen, New York, and the traffic between the two areas was frequent and common.  Many marriages seem to have arisen from the contact between the two communities.

1671. Benjamin Carpenter Jr.

Number 1022 in the Carpenter Memorial.  Page 164
Is this the Benjamin Carpenter listed in LDS Vidal Records Library, in the LDS
Family History Suite, (C) 1996 Infobases, Inc.?
It indicates that Benjamin Carpenter was an ordained Priest, with a residence
of Norton, Delware county, OH.  A conference of the Church was held in
Benjamin's home in Norton.  Benjamin built the first Grist mill on the present
site of Chagrin Falls, Ohio.
Apparently running Grist Mills ran in the family.  His father ran one also.
See father's notes.
He spent time in Kingston, PA before moving to OH.

Dear Ken:
Well now that we have the 1840 census of Hope information on Robert N.
Carpenter and the will of Ivory Carpenter we sure have our work cut out for
us. Just for starters I have to go back and correct everything thing I'd
stuck under Joseph! Seeing as how there were only two brothers in Hope I
think we did quite well.
Anyhow to repeat:
Census of 1840 census of Hope, Hamilton Co., NY:
Robert N. Carpenter (married to Betsey Clark) was by this time 50-60 years
old. Polly was already married to Belden Resseguie. In their household was
a total of 8 (counting Robt.)....only one female...Betsey.
date of birth of sons is this census would be:
2 between 1830-35 (Caleb Randolph 1834 and Allen Danforth 1832)
2 1825-1830 (William V. 1826 and Andrew 1830....???)
1 1820-1825 (Reuben 1822)
1 1810-1820 (Samuel B. 1810)
I think we need to move William V. 1826 and Andrew 1830 from Joseph
(previous will information) to Robert N. Carpenter. They both lived and
died in Northville and I have their children from another census. DO YOU
CONCURE???!!!
Caleb Randolph (listed as Randloph) and Allen D. we can positively identify
in another census as children of Robert N. I'm sure there is even more
children than this, for instance an Anascia (spelling ?), etc.

Dear John and Ken:
Got this information today from Mrs. Brooks, Town Clerk of Northville, NY:
Frank Carpenter died 1917 at age 16, Father Ellis Carpenter birthplace
Bedford, NY, mother Anna Close from Ireland
George Carpenter DOB 4/26/1907 DOD Aug 13, 1933, father Charles Carpenter
birthplace Mt. Kisco, NY, mother Mary Miles birthplace Marmorine, NY
As far as I can tell the above doesn't fit into our line but it is
information that keeps us from searching dead-ends and I thought John might
like it for his collection.
*******************
Danford A. Carpenter, DOD May 25, 1892 age 59, father Robert N. Carpenter,
mother Betsey Clark (so we have another source of proff besides census!).
Sarah Carpenter DOD Feb 11, 1901 age 72 years 10 months 11 days, father
Isaac Brownell, mother Jennie Harris. (This is the Sarah Brownell married
to William V. Carpenter. I've done the Brownell line and Harris lines. The
following is my data: Jennie Harris born 1800, Isaac Brownell born 1798)
Herbert H. Carpenter DOB Oct 14, 1858, DOD March 22, 1921 age 62 yrs, 5
months, 7 days. (just gives us more complete dates). father C.R. Carpenter,
mother Adeline Kathan wife MaggieA. Russell
Robert Nason Carpenter (named after his grandfather!). DOB Nov 24, 1890 DOD
Jan 8, 1940. He never married (death certif. confirms this). In his will he
left his house and shop in Northville to his brother Adin.
Elizabeth Eugenia Willard married to James Carpenter (haven't a clue which
one...am still reasearching). She was born 3/24/1885 and died June 1926 age
41 yrs. 3 months 1 day. Mother was Elizabeth Fuller and father was John A.
Willard. I've done the Willard line. This John A. was born in 1853.
However, I've just written to Henry Willard as I have a wrong death date
for this John.
Martha A. Carpenter DOB 5/10/1853 DOD June 17, 1927 at age 74 yrs, 1 month
17 days. father was George H. Gallup and mother was Emaline Gillman both
born in Lake Plaseant, NY this Martha Gallup was married to Edwin R.
Carpenter (1850-1914) brother to below listed William Fayette Carpenter.
William Fayette Carpenter DOB April 5, 1858 DOD Nov 22, 1930 age 72 yrs 7
months 17 days, father William V. Carpenter, mother Sarah Brownell (father
Isaac Brownell and mo. Jennie Harris listed above).
I realize that a lot of this is repeat information, but at least now you
have it straight from the horses mouth...the Town Clerk!
Marcia
P.S. I'm headed to Gloversville Town Clerk to get Adin Carpenter's death
certif. Just found out he died there (lived in Northville but probably died
in Nathan Littauer Hosp. in Gloversville).

Subject: Another whole John Carpenter line!
Dear John:
For ages I have been trying to sort out the William B. Carpenter line and the Samuel B. Carpenter line (mostly to make sure that it didn't fit into my direct line as I have Sam's and Williams in about the same area).
(I THINK this is Union Mills Cem, Broadalbin NY but my notes are not clear as I was doing several cemeteries at once.)
William B. goes back to a John Carpenter born 1790 (don't know parentage of this John, do you???).
John Carpenter (b. 1790) died 5/20/1862 age 72 married to an Abigail born 1808 died Aug 9, 1857 age 47
dau. Anna Maria b. 1820 died Oct 21, 1849 in her 20th yr.
dau. Helena Mary b. 1832 died Jan 15, 1854 in her 22nd yr.
son William B. Carpenter b. 1834. He died in Battle of Wilderness near Spottsylvania Courthouse May 11, 1864. He was enlisted in the 77th Regiment NY Vol. Company E.
His wife was Angeline (?)  b. 1850 died Feb. 16, 1890 age 40.
So at least now I know that William B. goes back to this John. Where do we connect him??

Conklingville Cem. 1/2 miles south of Conklinville. Sometimes Called Bapt. Church Cem. this is in Saratoga Co., but very close to the Ny border near Northville, NY (Fulton Co.) and Hope, NY (Hamilton Co.)

I don't know if this Sam is the son of Joseph (1785 Vt.) and Marany Carpenter (was not in Marany's will but she died in 1886 and this Sam was already dead by then. Or if this is a Samuel that is the son of Joseph's brother Robert N. Carpenter (1786 Vt.) and Betsey Clark.

I have a Sam (bet. 1810-1813) the son of Robert N. Carpenter as married to a Julia Ann (b 1817) in the 1850 census of Hope, Hamilton Co., NY children: John W. age 5 and Harriet A. age 1. Later he married a Mrs. Charlotte Morrison and had a son named Manassa.

Meantime I have found these cemetery records (same lot):

Samuel Carpenter b. 1813 died Aug 25, 1883 age 70 wife Harriet b. 1817 died May 18, 1879 age 62.

Timothy H. "son of of Sam & Harriet on tombstone" b. 1838 died age 18 on April 19, 1856
dau. Sarah Jane b. 1836 died May 14, 1845

Joseph H. b. 1850 died Nov 1, 1852 age 2 years 7 months and 19 days.

Lydia Smith wife of Joseph B. b. 1867 died Feb. 9, 1908 age 41

Julia Carpenter (wife of Henry Barker on tombstone)  b. 1842 died Sept 9, 1908 age 66.

ANY IDEAS?????

Number 1027 in the Carpenter Memorial.  Page 165.
Family is on page 286  (#347). No spouse listed.
A blacksmith. He was an early settler of Minisink and owned 100 acres, now (in
1898) owned by Thadeus B. and Henry W. Denton.  He lived in a log cabin on the
hill, made potash and worked carried on his farm.
He reportedly died in 1816 in Minisink, but this is incorrect because in died in 1813.
Death about 1816 Minisink Twp, Orange, NY?  Or...? See below.

COMMENT:
Wallkill to Goshen is about 2-10 miles in present day Orange County, NY.

Please be aware that there is a Wallkill hamlet and township in Ulster County, NY.
COMMENT:
Minisink to Goshen NY is about 15 miles.  And Goshen to Minisink Township is half that.

NOTE:
The Wallkill River flows northward along the eastern side of Minisink Township when it enters the present day boundary of NY from NJ.  It also flows northward between Wallkill and Goshen, NY on NY 17.
For more on this river, see: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wallkill_River

Per the above record he had a daughter named Anne who married Terry Denman (Denton?).
No record of this Richard marrying about 1767/1769 with a daughter Anne.
The closest marriage found was in 1768 a Richard Carpenter married a Mary Hallock in 1768 of Milton, Ulster, NY. She was born 3 Mar 1748 Rye, Westchester, NY. No children listed. Her Father:  Edward Hallock     Disc #106     Pin #448384   Her Mother:  Phebe Clapp     Disc #106     Pin #448380 .  That Richard Carpenter was of Red Springs, Musketa Cove, Queens, LI, NY and is well documented.

This leaves the question if the above daughter Anne belongs to another Richard Carpenter and there are many possibilities but none marrying a Denman or similar.

The following information was added and when in the future the correct Richard is found or confirmed it will be useful to that researcher. 11/2008 JRC

BIRTH: About 1750 or 1751 per the record below.  However, it also says he was age 20 when his daughter Elizabeth was born in 1771 making him born about 1751.

Page 522: Regarding 1775 Tax roll.
It is worthy of note, too, that the original list beam check marks, indicating that the taxes were not only assessed but paid, that the authority of the local officers was respected, though the ties that bound them to a national government were dissolving. This obedience to local home rule was characteristic of our ancestors. In throwing off British authority and establishing a new government they guarded against anarchy, and in the articles of association, signed so generally six months before this tax wan levied, they had pledged themselves not only to resistance to England, but to the "preservation of peace and order" among themselves.
District No. 1 – Abel Gale, Assessor,  (The following Carpenters are listed)
Solomon Carpenter, John Carpenter (sadler), Anthony Carpenter, Moses Carpenter, Carman Carpenter.

COMMENT:
There is a probate citation of a widow Abigail Barney in RI who becomes the guardians of her two sons. But further research put this in 1796 in RI. For the basics on this probate guardianship see the url link.
https://www.ancestry.com/discoveryui-content/view/132740:9079?tid=&pid=&queryId=37a5a1a72cf7e13b4029b96c6decce05&_phsrc=QSF3549&_phstart=successSource
So this is likely an unrelated Abigail since we know our Abigail was married to Richard Carpenter about 1770 to 1813 when he died.
Then we have the following ABGI citation and likely if researched, it will reference the guardian probate record that that is above.  This is likely where the 1739 birth date came from.

Subject: Carpenter Cousins - Research

Hi John,

I was on the Carpenter Cousins website today.  I am a member of the DAR and a descendant of Nicholas Barney and Mitty/Submit/Milly Carpenter.  I have a death certificate for Reuben (their son) that mentions them being the parents.

I am searching for some proof that Mitty was the daughter of Richard and Abigail Carpenter.  I believe she died young in Canandaigua because Nicholas took a second wife, but could not find any information.  I am also looking for some proof that Nicholas Barney was the child of Benjamin Barney and Amy Conklin.

The DAR requires that I show actual proof and note the source of the information.  Do you have any documents that you can share or can you point me in a direction to do additional research?

I appreciate any help that you can offer.
