Subject: James Lafayette (Lewis) Carpenter
Mr. John Carpenter,
I'm the grandson of James Lafayette (Lewis) Carpenter, b. 2/25/1904, d. 12/31/1977 (Tacoma, Washington). He was in the U.S. Army for more than 30 years. And, I'm the son of Kenneth Boyd Carpenter, b. 6/8/1933. He served in the U.S. Air Force for more than 20 years. My Dad is 81 and still enjoying life.
My Uncle Jon is my Dad's youngest brother. As of yesterday, Jon informed me of the 1901 book by Daniel Hoogland Carpenter, "The Carpenter Family In America." That's an impressive work. It's exciting to entertain the idea that I'm a descendant of a very early lineage of Carpenter to have come to America. However, I'm a cautious person. I hope your knowledge of the various lines and expertise in genealogy can lead you to render an opinion as to whether James Larayette (Lewis) Carpenter is in fact related to one of the lineages of Carpenters who came to American very early on. I do not want you to go to any trouble on this matter. Rather, I hope you have information at your fingertips that provides a definitive answer. Hope you do. Thank you!
Best regards,
Jim

Death: 21 Feb 2016 (aged 75) Issaquah, King County, Washington, USA
Burial: Cedar Lawns Memorial Park, Redmond, King County, Washington, USA
Plot: Rhododendron
Memorial #: 198742623
Bio:
From Flintoft's website: Judy was born in St. Louis, MO on November 6, 1940 to Clarence Eugene Dueber and Dorothy Carpenter Dueber. She was one of eight siblings, four sisters (Joanne, Jeanne, Julie and Mary Jane) and three brothers (Tom, Mike, and Dan).

She met her future husband, Rich, at a Southeast Missouri State University Freshman “mixer” in October 1959. Judy and Rich were married on August 18, 1962. They have two children. Their daughter, Laura Marie was born in 1963. Laura lives in Bellevue, WA and is married to Tom Van Horn. They have three children: Bryan and twins John and Katherine. Their son, Richard Vincent, Jr. was born in 1967. Richard lives in Sammamish, WA and is married to the former Peggy Mayhew. They have two children: Richard III and William.

Her young family lived in St. Louis where she was a stay-at-home Mom until their son was in High School. Judy was a wonderful seamstress, becoming an accomplished quilter. She also worked tirelessly sewing costumes for the Metropolitan Ballet of St. Louis as well as serving on their Board of Directors. She was employed as an Executive Secretary in the Parkway School District and later by the Eighth Circuit US Court of Appeals in St. Louis.

In 1983 she accompanied Rich for a year in Newport, RI while he attended the Naval War College. While in Newport she enjoyed the excitement of the last America’s Cup race ever held there.

Her early travels included a VW “Beetle” camping trip to the Expo 67 World’s Fair in Montreal. While on that trip, Laura was informed that she would soon have a new baby sibling who turned out to be her brother Rich. Judy loved exploring our Colonial heritage and family genealogy in New England. Favorite places were Newport, Boston, Williamsburg, and Monticello.

Judy and Rich moved from St. Louis to Washington, DC in 1989 where Rich was appointed Director of International Operations for the Defense Mapping Agency. They retired in 1998 to Edenton, NC where they restored an historic home.

Judy traveled extensively throughout Europe, once visiting her son who was a US Congress-German Bundestag exchange student. Her travels included a 1990 trip through Eastern Europe, shortly after the fall of the Soviet Union. On one of her visits to Rome she attended Easter weekend services, including Easter Sunday Mass in St. Peter’s Square celebrated by Pope (Saint) John Paul II.

Judy loved her Cruises! Their honeymoon was a cruise to Nassau in 1962 and was celebrated with a 50th Anniversary “re-Cruise” to Nassau. She also cruised to Alaska, through the Panama Canal, and twice to various Caribbean ports.

In their retirement, Judy and Rich traveled throughout the United States in their motor home. Beginning in 2000, they spent their summers in Seattle with their families and parts of the winter in Florida. Since both children were now living in the Seattle area they finally moved to their current Redmond home in 2015.

Her greatest joy, however, was her grandchildren (and everyone else’s grandchildren!). She could never get enough of babies and loved pointing them out wherever she saw them. Part of her joy was attending golf tournaments, swim meets, cross country meets, Destination Imagination Global competition, Jazz and band concerts, Eagle Scout projects, and plays.

Judy was fortified by the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick and died peacefully surrounded by her loving family on Wednesday, February 21.

Her family requests that, in lieu of flowers, remembrances be made in Judy’s name to the Alzheimer’s Association or the American Cancer Society
Inscription: Loving wife, mother, nana
