OBIT:
Obituary of John Harvey Carpenter
Watertown Daily Times October 30, 1926

J.H. Carpenter, 86, Veteran, Dies
Served Three Years in Civil War
Suffered Stroke in June
Was Born in Vermont But Spent Most of His Life in this Vicinity-One of 14 Children

At 5:30 on Saturday morning, Oct. 30, occurred the death of John H. Carpenter, 86, at the home his daughter, Mrs. B. L. Johnson of Calcium.

Mr. Carpenter was born at St. Albans, Vermont, March 4, 1840, a son of Amos and Delanay Carpenter. When he was but four years old his parents came from Vermont to Jefferson County, driving their team hitched to a wagon. the family settled in this vicinity, where Mr. Carpenter as a lad received his education in the district school attending from the age of 5 to 14 years.

His diaries, kept regularly through a long life, tell of his returning in his 15th year to attend "Geography School" and to perfect his penmanship under the instruction of a "writing master".

In 1862 he enlisted in the 10th N.Y. Heavy Artillery and served during the remaining three years of the Civil War. He received his honorable discharge and returned home. On June 10, 1886 (should be 1866), he married Miss Eveline Scott of Sandfords Corners, who died Oct. 23, 1915.

In 1868 he purchased the farm where he spent the remaining years of his life.

Mr. Carpenter was one of a family of 14 children of whom but two sisters survive him, Mrs. Orpha Shaffert of Watertown, and Mrs. Alice Hecox of Chadwicks, N.Y.

For several years he was an active member of Watertown Grange, and to the last he retained his membership in the Joe Spratt Post of the G.A.R.

On June 15, 1926 he suffered a shock at his home and gradually fell from that time.

He leaves four children, three sones, Arthur, Asa and George of Watertown and one daughter, Mrs. B. Johnson of Calcium; also five grandchildren, Mrs. Fred P. Hoose of Amenia, N.Y. Laurine Carpenter and Ruby Carpenter of Watertown and Gladys and Marion Johnson of Calcium; also one great grandchild. His only grandson, Wesley Carpenter, late of Watertown died in June 1925.

A friend today paid the following tribute:

"Mr. Carpenter, the oldest resident of the little village of Calcium, was a man whose character demanded and received the love and respect  of all. His sound judgement, sterling honesty, absolute sincerity and extreme temperance  of speech and thought combined to form a character reliable and sound. Many turned to him for advice in their troubles and his help was always modestly given. He was one whose gentleness made him great and his friends who deeply mourn him are numbered by hundreds."

Prayers will be held at the home at 2 Monday afternoon, Nov 1 with services at 2:30 at the Calcium Christian church Rev. R.G. English, officiating.

Interment will be made at Sandfords Corners cemetery.

NOTE:
Baden-Württemberg (/ˌbɑːdən ˈvɜːrtəmbɜːrɡ/;[6] German: [ˌbaːdn̩ ˈvʏʁtəmbɛʁk] (listen)), commonly shortened to BW or BaWü, is a German state (Land) in Southwest Germany, east of the Rhine, which forms the southern part of Germany's western border with France. ...
After World War II, the Allies established three states in the territory of modern-day Baden-Württemberg: (South) Baden,[h] Württemberg-Baden[i] and Württemberg-Hohenzollern.[j] Baden and Württemberg-Hohenzollern were occupied by France, while Württemberg-Baden was occupied by the United States. The new artificial borders were a consequence of France requesting its own occupation zone in Germany after World War II, and the Americans' wish to keep the A8 motorway, which spans east-west across northern Baden and northern Württemberg, wholly within their occupation zone.  ...
In 1949, each state became a founding member of the Federal Republic of Germany (West Germany),
