Bio:
John Milton Carpenter of Beaverton passed away Sunday, July 29, 2012, at age 94 from age related complications. John was born in Danville, Ill., Aug. 8, 1917, to Bess and Ed Carpenter. He joined the U.S. Navy in 1937 and served on the Aircraft Carrier "USS Enterprise" for eight years, leaving the service in 1945. He was the last of the "plank owners" of the Enterprise and fought in most of the South Pacific battles, ending his service with 10 battle stars and several medals. He retired with the rank of Chief Fire Controlman. During one intense nighttime battle, John prayed and accepted Jesus into his heart. After leaving the service he became a minster and pastored churches in Oregon and Washington. His last ministry was in Jerusalem, Israel with his wife, Betty. Because of ill health, he came back to Beaverton to be with family at the Cornerstone Church. John leaves behind Betty, his wife of 21 years; his son, Mark; daughter, Sandra; Betty's son, Mark; and daughters, Dianna and Cynthia; and grandchildren. A military service will be held Wednesday, Aug. 29 at Willamette National Cemetery, 12 p.m. noon and memorial service, 7:30 p.m. at the Cornerstone Church, 3400 SW 103rd Ave., Beaverton.Published in The Oregonian
