He was born May 7, 1950, in Cleveland, Ohio, to Max Roha and Mary (Chapman) Roha. David grew up in Brecksville, Ohio, and received his undergraduate degree from Antioch College. He went on to receive his master's degree from University of California, Berkeley, and his doctorate in Electrochemical Engineering from Case Western Reserve University in Ohio. David was devoted to his wife of 28 years, Eve (Sheehan) Roha. He was a remarkable father who raised his children to embrace new opportunities and expand their horizons. His many interests included traveling, historic battle reenactment, genealogical research and gardening. David was preceded in death by his mother, Mary (Chapman) Roha.
