Chauncey Carpenter Is Buried in Bandon

Chauncey Carpenter, 37, who spent his boyhood in Bandon and who lived here for a number of years after he was married, passed away at Carpenterville on Pistol River, Curry county, Wednesday, January 20, following an operation for appendicitis. Funeral services were held at Gold Beach Thursday morning and interment was made in Bandon in the afternoon.

Mr. Carpenter was the son of Mr. and Mrs. D. W. Carpenter who for many years conducted a mercantile business in this city. As a young man he worked on small vessels doing local coastwise hauling. He was a sailor on the Randolph when that vessel capsized in crossing the local bar. Being washed off the deck, Carpenter swam ashore. All the others on deck were drowned. Two men in the engine room were rescued through a hole cut in the bottom after the boat drifted into the surf.

In 1917 Mr. Carpenter was plying a small gas boat up the Coquille river en route to the county fair. His wife, her two small sisters, and the Carpenter baby were with him when the boat struck a submerged log and capsized. He saved the infant by swimming ashore with it but the others were drowned.

Later Mr. Carpenter was married again and he is survived by his widow and five daughters, the eldest 15; also by two brothers, Asa and Ray Carpenter, and by his parents, all of Carpenterville.

Mrs. Carpenter's Body Recovered

Last Victim of Triple Drowning on May 7th Is Buried Here This Afternoon

The body of Mrs. Chauncey Carpenter, the last of the three who lost their lives in the river accident near Myrtle Point on May 7th, was recovered Tuesday afternoon at about 2 o'clock. It is supposed that it had been caught in one of the numerous snags in a deep hole nearby, consequently was not raised during the dragging operations.

The deceased was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. R. Hill of Pistol river, Curry county, and was 19 years, 9 months and 6 days old at the time of her death. Besides her husband, the deceased is survived by an infant child, who was rescued at the time of the accident.

The funeral services were conducted at the Ellingson undertaking parlors this afternoon at 2:30 and interment was made at the K. of P. cemetery. Many relatives and friends gathered to pay their last respects and a large floral offering was contributed.
