Carpenter and Michael Shields Pass Away Tuesday Two G. A. R. comrades, living next door to each other of nearly the same age died Tuesday, Michael Shields at his home on Barney street, after many months suffering from Brights disease, and Justice of the Peace E. R. Carpenter, who died at the Hornel Sanitarium after an operation. The funeral services for Mr. Shields were held yesterday from the Blessed Sacrament church and that of Mr. Carpenter will be held to-day at the Methodist church. The News will publish a more extended notice of both gentlemen. They were landmarks in Andover, and both men much respected in this community.

Carpenter died Tuesday evening, May 7th, at the home of her son, Edgar Carpenter of pneumonia, age 76 years. Mrs. Carpenter was the widow of the late Elisha R. Carpenter, who died about seven years ago. She was born in this town, May 12, 1842, and had always lived here. Three children survive, Edgar A. Carpenter and Mrs. B. B. Hann, of this village, and Mrs. Millie Skaehill of Olean. Mrs. Carpenter was a member of the Andover Methodist Episcopal Church. Funeral services will be conducted at the home of her son, in this village, this afternoon, at 2:30 Rev. Chas. Collins pastor of the church, officiating. Interment will be in Hillside Cemetery beside her husband.

Bio: Obituary, The Geneva Gazette, Monday, August 14, 1911:Sanford L. Carpenter, aged 67 years, died Saturday at 5.30 p. m., at his home on Castle street. Mr. Carpenter was taken two weeks ago with pleural pneumonia which developed into typhoid, terminating fatally on Saturday. He moved to Geneva in 1900 from Lodi where he was born and reared. In 1873 he was married to Mary A. Slaght of Lodi, who survives him, with their five children, Arthur B. of Fremont, Neb., Mrs. C. S. Long, and Budd J. of Geneva, Iva E. of Buffalo and Winifred at home ; also one brother D. P. Carpenter of Sodus and one grandchild Edward S. Carpenter of this city. Funeral services were held Tuesday at 2:30 p.m., from his home, Rev. Dr. Hall of the First M. E. church officiating. Burial was made in Glenwood cemetery.His wife, Mary, died May 16, 1942. Her name is inscribed on the stone with no dates. Still looking to prove her burial here.
