Bio: Daughter of John and Hannah (Putnam) Waters. Betsey Waters married Tyler Carpenter in Sutton, MA on May 22, 1832. They had at least seven children, four of whom lived to adulthood. In about 1855 they moved to Minnesota with children Harriet, George, Lewis, and Quiett (Etta).
(Her husband Tyler Carpenter did not remarry; he later moved to Lyon County, MN where he lived with their son George's family. He died in Lyon County, MN in 1884.)
Her obituary in the Rochester City Post, published 12 December 1863 (p3/c3):
DIED.
In Cascade, Minn., Nov. 5th, at 6 o'clock
A. M., of Typhoid fever, Mrs. Betsey W.,
wife of Dea. TYLER CARPENTER, aged 59
years, 9 months, and 18 days.
"Blessed are the dead, that die in the
Lord"
The deceased was a daughter of Mrs.
John Waters, West Sutton, Mass., was
born January, 1804. She loved the Saviour
from a child. In 1815, she choose
Jesus for her friend, but did not unite with
the church until after her marriage, when
she, with her husband, and others, were
baptised and united with the Baptist Church
in West Sutton, where she remained till
May, 1855, when they removed to Rochester,
Minn. Near two years after, they,
with about twenty others, formed the Baptist
Church in R[ochester]., where she remained till
her death. She was kind, dutiful and a
loving wife, lender, affectionate mother,
and a loving disciple of her blessed Jesus.
Her last sickness was short, only two
weeks, but was resigned and met her death
without a struggle, or a sigh, and now,
rests from her labors.

Once I get to Elisha Carpenter I can go back to the Williams who came over.
But currently I am attempting to validate the relationship of Walter P.
Carpenter to Seth Carpenter. I have not been able to locate anyone else
tracing this line from Mass. to Maine to Minnesota yet. I have the copies
of the Censuses from Minnesota and Maine showing the family to Marshall P.
But nothing beyond.

resident of the city for over fifteen years, died yesterday noon, of
combined dropsy and heart disease. The deceased was 83 years of age, and
was the father of Mrs. J. B. Bassett. His wife, at the age of 82 years,
survives him, together with his two children, Mrs. J. B. Bassett of this
city, and Mr. Marshall Carpenter of Orono. Mr. Carpenter was well known to
all old settlers, although he never engaged actively in business in this
State. He served in Vermont and New York regiments during the war of 1812,
and was a prominent politician in his native State - Massachusetts. The
remains will be deposited in a vault, awaiting interment in Layman's
cemetery. The time of the funeral services will be announced

haven't found much yet. They lived on astreet named Seward Park. I don't

John represented Patten in the State of Maine Legislature. He was residing in
Lincoln, ME in 1820. Latter he moved to Minnieapolis, MN.
Paul N. Carpenter of ME (1990) provided details on John Carpenter's descendants.
BOOKLET: One Branch of the Carpenter Family - A Brief History by Paul N.
Carpenter 1990. John Carpenter was born Sept. 20, 1793 in Paris, Maine.
Amos Carpenter's history lists John as born in Patten. This is not
possible since Patten did not have its first settlers until after 1620. The
history also says that he lived in Lincoln, Maine, in 1820, and that he
later moved to Minneapolis, Minn.] # 1463 John married Joannah Ford (B.
1795 ) of Sumner, Maine, July 14, 1815. Amos Carpenter's history does
not follow the family beyond this point. Later data is based an the
History of Paris, Maine by William Lapham and Silas Maxim; the Maine
Archives records of Paris, Patten, and Linneus, Maine; and other
historical documents noted in the list of references.
The Penobscot Registry of Deeds shows' that John Carpenter bought
from Amos Patten " 167 acres on the Aroostook Road, Township 4 Range 6
(Patten), west of the East line lot # 30 Sept. 9, 1836 ". A house was
built and stood on this land until about 1985 when it was burned by an
arsonist. This lot is about one mile north of the Patten cemetery on
the west side of the road. This land is presently owned (1990) by Irene
Bradford of Patten. Irene has provided much historical information of
Patten, as well as a photograph of John Carpenter, which was probably
taken about 1850.

It is recorded that Amos Patten, a coastwise shipper of Bangor,
Maine, bought the township of Patten in 1820. He hired Ira Fish to go
to the area to start a settlement. Fish went there by way of the
Penobscot and Mattawamkeag rivers to Mattawamkeag Lake, thence to what
is now Island Falls, up Fish Stream to Patten. Later, a trail was
blazed through the woods from Mattawamkeag village probably through
Molunkus, Benedicta, Sherman, and Stacyville to Patten.
Presumably John and his family followed this route. It is
recorded that this was the second family to settle in Patten and that
they arrived prior to 1838. The Patten census of 1850 showed the
household of John Carpenter, age 56, farmer, to consist of:

COMMENT: The census data suggests answers to several questions.
1.John Carpenter was living in Patten in 1870. His wife Joanna
had died Dec. 7, 1867 and apparantly Seth and his family was
living with him. I suggest that John died at a date unknown
to us and was buried beside his wife Joanna, and no one saw
to having a stone placed there.
2.Lafayette, listed in the household of John in 1850, was
obviously too young to be the son of John and Joanna. He is
listed in both 1860 and 1870 in the household of Albion,
thus should be listed as the son of Albion.
3. Chloe, whose Patten cemetery marker lists "Chloe C. -
Daughter of John and Joanna Carpenter Died April 25,
1876 age 10 years 5 months 15 days " is listed in the 1870
census as daughter of Seth, age 13. Since numbers on the
stone are nearly illegible, probably the age should read
Age 18 years 5 months 15 days.

Simeon, born Oct. 5, 1831, lived in Patten throughout his life.
The 1870 Census listed his occupation as lumberman. Simeon married
Emeline Scribner, sister to Daniel Scribner and aunt to Caleb Scribner,
founder of the Lumbermans Museum in Patten, trustee of Patten Academy,
and school teacher.
The children of Simeon and Emeline and their spouses were:

As previously shown, the 1870 Patten census listed Dora A. and Ida E.
in the Simeon Carpenter household. Simeon's daughters were known to
the family as Amy and Mina. Why they are listed as Dora and Ida on
the census is not known to us. Amy and Mina both lived in Auburn.
Neither had children. Both are buried in Auburn. Mina worked as a
seamstress and dressmaker at B. Peck's in Lewiston.
Ira lived in Patten. He became a dealer in horses, supplying
horses for woods work, for which there was great demand. He was a
somewhat " boom or bust " individual. Much of his life he was
financially well to do. Occasionally he had very little. Ira also had
contrasting personalities. He spent much of his time in his office in
his horse barn - a barn big enough to hold about a hundred horses.
His office had an attached room equipped with a large round table
ideal for card playing. These games were not played for pleasure, and
were quite continuous.
Ira was not noted for his church attendance, but the ministers
were not surprised to sometimes find a barrel of flour, sugar, or meat
left at their door. It was commonly known where the provisions came
from, but never admitted to by Ira.
Ira married Ella Ruth in Linneus, Maine. They had one child,
Annie born Oct 8, 1882. Annie married Manson Brown, a dentist and
later an undertaker. They had one child, Ruth, who married Floyd
Hewitt.
CHARLES ARTHUR CARPENTER AND DESCENDANTS
Charles Arthur Carpenter was born Jan. 25, 1863. He married Delia
Hope Bubar Mar. 13, 1890, in Linneus, Maine. Delia was the daughter of
Frederick Hammond Bubar, a Baptist-minister. Charles, as did his
brothers and sisters, attended Patten Academy. Since school at that
time was a somewhat irregular affair, it is difficult to determine how
far a student progressed. He and Ira were stage drivers out of Bar
Harbor for a time. He worked in Linneus in a mill processing hemlock
bark for dying processes. This is probably where he met Delia.

Ella, Amy, Frances and Fred were born in Linneus. Roland, Lewis,
and Paul were born in Patten. Charles moved to Patten between 1894 and
1899. Deeds show that he bought property in Patten in 1901.

In Patten, Charles and Ira owned a farm on the Happy Corner road,
later called the Harrington farm (they sold to Joseph Harrington). At
the same time they sold that farm, Ira went into town and Charles
bought a farm at the corner of Happy Corner and Frenchville roads,
where he lived until his death in 1921. The farm was sold by Delia in
the fall of 1921.
Charles worked as a farmer. During the winter months the horses
were used for work in the woods. Usually one team was rented for woods
work or with a teamster for the winter. The other team stayed on the
farm and Charles would contract to deliver supplies for woods
operators, preferably not more than 112 days travel into the woods.
This allowed him to be home at night.
It was an one of these trips into the woods that he developed a
strangulated hernia, which was not readily reduced. He was brought
from the woods, went by train to Bangor where surgery was performed.
Gangrene developed, and there being no anti-biotics at that time, he
died at age 58. Delia died Sept 22, 1926.
At the time of his death, Charles left his wife Delia, seven
children, and seven grandchildren. In the years since then, the
number of his descendants has grown substantially. At the time of
this writing, they include:

Ella ( b. 10/27/90) married Frank Colebrook Hamilton Apr 10,
1910. Frank farmed in Mars Hill and Westfield. Their children were
Emeline b. 6/11/11 ; Marjorie b. 3/7/14 ; Frances b. 6/5/15
Joan b. 6/2/18, Betty b. 2/21/19, Luna b. 2/21/21,
Mary b. 1/26/26, Linda b. 4/9/32, Amy b. 3/30/34.
Ella died Oct. 1981. Her descendants include her 9 daughters,
34 grandchildren, and 55 great grandchildren.
Amy Mable (b. 9/11/1892) married Ora Eugene Gilpatrick
June 24, 1915 in Patten. Ora was a dentist in Mars Hill. Amy
died July 23, 1989. Their children were Arlo Eugene b. 9/26/16
and Charles Elmer b. 11/5/19. Her descendants include her 2 sons,
6 grandchildren, and 8 great grandchildren.
Frances Willard (b. 5/28/94) married Dr. Loren Carter Jun 25,
1960. He was administrator of the Northern Maine Sanatorium, Presque
Isle, Maine from about 1920 to 1960. Frances was a graduate nurse of
St. Barnabus Hospital and Superintendent of Nurses at the Northern
Maine Sanatorium until 1960. She died Oct 17, 1983. They had no
children.
Fred Hammond (b. 9/28/96) married Myrtle Phillipa Joscelyn Oct 7,
1920. He worked at Richardson's Hardware in Patten as a machinist.
During World War I, he served in France in the Air Corp from 1917 to
1919. After their marriage they moved to the area of Chicago, Illinois
where he worked at Montgomery Wards as a buyer, as a manager for the A
& P Grocery Company, and as an insurance salesman. They had one child,
Joscelyn Ann. Fred died Aug 26, 1959. His descendants include his
daughter and 3 grandchildren.

Roland Joy (b. 2/13/99) married Izetta Elizabeth Lidstone June 12,
1924. Both Roland and Izetta graduated from Bates College in 1922. He
was teacher and Principal at Mapleton High School 1922 - 1927,
Principal at Aroostook Central Institute in Mars Hill from 1927 - 1933,
Superintendent of Schools in Presque Isle from 1933 - 1943;
Superintendent of Schools in Bangor 1943 - 1956; Instructor, Dept. of
Education, Univ. of Maine 1956 - 1967. Roland died Jan 11, 1989. Their
children were Charles Lidstone b. 5/14/1925 ; Jean Frances b.
10/23/1927 ; Robert Jack b. 3/22/1930. His descendants include his 3
children, 8 grand children, and 10 great grandchildren.
Lewis Jacques (b. 4/5/1905) married Charlotte Louise
Augustinus Aug 2, 1933. Lewis graduated from the Univ. of Maine
1,927 in Electrical Engineering. He worked for Stone and Webster,
Panama Canal Zone 19??-19??, and General Electric 19??-19?? at
Schenectady, N.Y. Lewis died Mar 28, 1987. Their children were:
Carol b. 3/26/1935, Jaculyn b. 6/1/1936, Lewis Jr. b. 7/30/1937,
Paul b. 3/16/1943, and Roland Bruce b. 12/5/1951 . His descendants
include 5 children, 12 grandchildren, and 5 great grandchildren.
Paul Nathaniel (b. 6/9/1910) married Elaine Emeline Shaw
Mar 27, 1937. He graduated from Bates College in 1933 as a chemist,
and received his MS in Agronomy from the Univ. of Maine in 1949.
He was teacher and coach at Aroostook Central Institute from
1934 - 1937 and at Skowhegan High School from 1937 - 1941;
Principal Bridgewater Classical Academy 1941 - 1944 ; Instructor in
Physics, Univ. of Maine 1944 - 1946 ; Asst. and Assoc. Professor of
Agronomy Univ. of Maine 1946 - 1976. Elaine attended Alma College,
Michigan, and was assistant Librarian at U. of Maine 1949 - 1975.
They have no children.

He was a nephew of Col. Ethan Allen of Vermont. On page 145 of the CM is a
sketch of his life taken from the History of the Town of Pittsford, VT printed
in 1872. Also at the end of that sketch is an extract of a letter written to
E.H. Carpenter of Manchester, NH by Rev. C.C. McIntire, D.D. dated Nov. 14,
1889 which stated he had found the grave of Rev. Abraham Carpenter and lists
the incriptions there on. See notes on page 145.
He was a nephew of Col. Ethan Allen of Vermont. A
Congregational minister.

The following sketch of his life is taken from the History of
the Town of Pittsford, VT, printed in 1872: -
While in Rehoboth, and after serving in the army, Abraham
"commenced studying for the Ministry. After his marriage he
went to reside in Killingly,,CT From here they moved to
Plainfield, NH in 1774. He was there ordained and installed
over the Congregational Church, and was the first minister in
that town. From Plainfield he removed to Whipple Hollow, VT
About the year 1790 the people of Orange Parish employed Rev.
Abraham Carpenter of Plainfield, NH as their minister. The
services on the occasion of his installation were held at the
house of Asa Stevens, it being before the meeting house was
finished. Mr. Carpenter was a very devoted Christian, and a
faithful pastor; under his ministry the church prospered. Few
pastors have secured a stronger hold upon the affections of his
people. He died after a short illness, and his remains were
interred in the parish burying ground."
In the history of Windham ,,CT, page 95, is the
following: "In 1768, Abraham Carpenter was ordained into the
office of Deacon by the laying on of hands, and dismissed after
five years service to become the pastor of the church of
Plainfield, N. H."
A brief account of his labors in Plainfield, N. H. is found on
page 47, of The New Hampshire Churches, by Rev. Robert F.
Lawrence, published in 1856, as follows: "In 1773 or 1774, Rev.
Abraham Carpenter, a 'strict Congregationalist,' was settled
according to the rules of the denomination in Plainfield,
without any action of the town. In March, 1779, the town voted
to accept Mr. Carpenter as the minister of the town. He received
the right of land, consisting of 360 acres. He continued to
preach in town eight or ten years longer, In his own kitchen and
in other private houses in the winter, and in the open air or in
a Meeting-house having neither doors or windows, in the summer.
In 1782 there was more than usual attention to religion, and
several neighboring ministers came and assisted him. After a few
years he was dismissed by his own congregation, and became
pastor of a church in Rutland, VT where he died and where his
grave is. He was considered a decided Christian, loving God and
rejoicing to be the servant of his people in preaching the
Gospel and teaching the youth. In a quiet and sober manner he
finished his ministry and went, we believe, to receive the
reward of one who had been 'faithful in a few things.'"
Extract of a letter written to E. H. Carpenter, Manchester, N.
H., by Rev. C. C. Mclntire, D. D., dated Nov.14, 1889: "After a
little search I found the grave or at least the Stone, of Rev.
Abraham Carpenter. The ground was in a beautiful, picturesque
spot, but is not very well cared for. The stone is a large-sized
slab standing upright and firm and is in a very good state of
preservation. On the stone is engraved an oval band, and running
around it are these words
This,,sleeping dust again shall rise
When Gabriel's trump shall shake the skies."
Within the oval is the inscription :-"To the pious memory of the
Rev. Abraham Carpenter, who we trust fell asleep in Jesus Aug.
21st, 1797, in the 58th year of his age." Below the oval and
near the base
"With mildest accents from his tongue
He often taught the listening throng
In silent notes still hear him say
Prepare for death and come away."

Immigrants and their Locations continued / Extracts from
the Proprietors Records ; Settlement of the Land-title
Controversy ; Vermont admitted into the Union ; Pay
ment of $30,000. 1.7901800.
During the next ten years, the agitation occasioned by the
war having subsided, the population of the town went on grad
ually increasing, while new openings were continually made in
the forest, a greater breadth of soil was brought under the
influence of husbandry, and the machinery of civil government
was moving gracefully along. This prosperous state of things,
combined with the natural fertility of soil, made the township
a desirable one for enterprising young men, who wished to
make pleasant homes for themselves in some promising region.
Among the number who located here in 1790, we find
Abraham Drury, John Woodward, Samuel Copley, Phineas
Hammond, Abraham Carpenter, Adget Lathrop and Nathan
B. Graham.

Abraham Carpenter was born in Rehoboth, Mass., Sep
tember 23, 1739, and in the French war he enlisted in the
army and was sent through the wilderness to Crown Point
Fort, where he remained through one summer, acting, the most
of that time, as one of the guard at that fortress. How long
he remained in the army we are not informed, but when his
term of service had expired, he returned to Rehoboth and
commenced studying for the ministry. He married Elizabeth
Bliss, also of Rehoboth, who was born April 5, 1738, and after
their marriage they went to reside in Killingly, Conn., from
which town they removed to Plainfield, N. H., in 1774. He
was there ordained and settled over a Congregational Church,
the first in the township. From Plainfield he removed to
"Whipple Hollow, and of his labors there we shall have some
thing to say hereafter.

DEACONS.
There were no regularly appointed deacons of the Baptist
Church till September 30, 1786, when Caleb Hendee,* Abel
Stevensf and Colburn Preston were elected to this office. The
other deacons have been :
Samuel Hendee and Ezra Spencer, elected October 16, 1841.
Roswell Woodcock and James R. Smith,}: elected February
11, 1843.
Samuel Hendee and Roswell Woodcock are the present
acting deacons.
In the year 1788, an effort was made by some individuals
living in that part of Pittsford known as Whipple Hollow,
together with persons living in that vicinity, in the north part
of Rutland, to form a religious society, and they petitioned the
Legislature for an act of incorporation. The prayer of the
petitioners was not granted, but they formed an association and
took the name of " Orange Parish." They held religious meet
ings, and occasionally had preaching by ministers living in the
vicinity. About the year 1790, they employed Rev. Abraham
Carpenter, from Plainfield, N. H., as their preacher. We have

already given some account of the early life of Mr. Carpenter.
Soon after he came to Pittsford a church was organized, and he
was installed as its pastor. The services on this occasion were
held at the house of Asa Stevens,* and Rev. Lemuel Haynes,
of Rutland, and Rev. Ithamar Hibbard, of Poultney, assisted
in the exercises.
Mr. Carpenter was a very devoted Christian, and a faithful
pastor, and under his ministry the church prospered. Few
pastors have secured a stronger hold upon the affections of his
people. He died, after a short illness, August 21, 1797, and
his remains were interred in the parish burying ground. His
wife, Elizabeth, died March 30, 1830, aged 92 years.f
After the death of Mr. Carpenter, the parish secured the
services of Rev, Mr. Norton, who was a man of some talent,
but wanting in characteristics so essential to success. Under
his ministry the religious interest in the society gradually
abated, dissensions sprung up among the members, the minister
soon left, and the meetings were discontinued.
