Family on page 451 (# 648).  A Farmer.

2005. XII. Cm:5 was b. Feb. 5, 1802 ; m. 1st, Akira Louisa Gale, March 6, 1825, (648) daughter of A. Gale, b. May 7, 1808, of Guilford, Vt.. d. July r 2, 3841 ; zd, a widow, Harriet it Franklin, July 4, 1843, before marriage a Noyes, daughter of James Noyes, of Guilford.
He served as justice of the peace for many years, and was sheriff for 11 years ; he also held various other town offices. A farmer and millwright.
Cyrus's mother was 50 years of age. and his father was 70, when he was born. His nephew, Dr. Elijah W. Carpenter, No. 4191. of Bernardston. Mass. when 20 years of age went to Brattleboro, Vt. from Rehoboth, on horseback and returned in the same way, and brought with him his uncle Cyrus who was then only six years of age. His nephew Elijah was 14 years older than his uncle Cyrus.

3034. Peter Carpenter

He came to Warren when a young man;  for a short time he was
occupied in teaching school;  from that position he was chosen
cashier of the Warren bank;  he held the position for about 30
years, having the reputation of being remarkably faithful and
exact in all his dealings and accounts;  about this period he
was stricken with paralysis and was compelled to vacate his
position, upon doing which the directors presented him, on
account of faithful services, with a solid silver pitcher which
still remains an heirloom in the hands of the oldest direct
descendant, the Hon. Charles Sidney Smith, Esq., ex-Mayor of
Providence, RI  At the time of his death, and for a number of
years previous, he was deacon of the Baptist Church.

was born about 1780 in Norton, MA.  He married Tiley Burt of Sutton, MA
on October 6, 1806 and they had 10 children. Samuel died October 1,
1826 in Northbridge and Tiley died October 27, 1828 in Northbridge.
Both are buried in Lackey Cemetery. The children were:
Betsey, born May 12, 1808 in Northbridge and died July 4, 1839 in Northbridge.
She never married and is also buried in Lackey Cemetery.
Jonathan Carpenter, born November 17, 1809 in Northbridge, MA. He married a
Candice Peirce on October 9, 1832 in Northbridge, and he
died August 15, 1837 in Northbridge. He is also buried in Lackey Cemetery.

3045. Daniel Carpenter

Number 1521 in the Carpenter Memorial on page 216.
A veteran of the War of 1812. He moved to Ohio around 1830.
He and his wife settled in Seneca, Ontario, NY and raised several sons on their
farm.  They both died in Hinkley and were burided in Litchfield, Medina county,
Ohio.

DEATH:  Father and his son, Daniel, died the same day?  27 Mar 1839.  The will below indicates that this Daniel's death was between Feb. 1839 (addenda date) and May 27, 1839 (probate date). This fits with the death date given.

I just have studied this will and determined that it is not my line, but perhaps someone else would like the copies I have of the actual will.
WILL OF DANIEL CARPENTER
To his beloved wife Hannah $1500, plus house, household goods, horse & carriage.
To his son James H.  $1000 to be paid when he reaches 21.  Hannah to be guardian with expenses for his maintenance and education provided from interest on the account.  After debts are paid, the rest of his estate is to
be divided equally among his children:  Daniel, Nancy Southerland, George, Abdul B. and James H.
The executors are to be his sons Daniel and George.  Signed by Daniel Carpenter of Hopewell, Medina Co., OH July 13, 1833 and witnessed by John Price and John Spangle of Hopewell.
A later addendum gives to his son James by deed, half of the farm situated in Litchfield, Medina Co and specifies that the children of Nancy are to be given her share upon her death.    dated Feb. 1839
The will was filed for probate May 27, 1839 (FHL film 423849 v. B 1832-1842  p. 157-160.
The Estate disposition was made May 30, 1839 with an accounting of property and money owned and owed.  One mortgage was held from a William Kelly in Greece, Monroe Co., NY perhaps the place from which they had come. (FHL film  423850 v. C 1839-1848 p. 379-381.)

Just a quick follow up to the Cyril date of death (1854). We spent some time in the early to mid 1980s searching for lost and/or abandoned cemeteries in the Greenfield Township PA area looking for evidence of Carpenters and associated families. During one of these forays we discovered a small Carpenter family cemetery that was lost to overgrowth and in danger of sinking into swamp land that had been created by damming a bordering pond. We photographed and documented as many of the headstones as we could. One of the headstones belonged to Cyril (my Great x 4 Grandfather); others belonged to his wife and other family members. I have visited the cemetery occasionally over the years including as recently as last summer (I think I still have the bramble bush scars). The names and dates are still readable on the headstones. The inscription on the headstone reads “In memory of CYRIL CARPENTER, WHO DIED Oct. 19, 1854. AE. 88y'rs 1 mo. & 5 days. Now we feel that each is blessed inheriting their eternal rest.” I think the 1854 date of death for this Cyril is accurate.

1830 census, p.339:
Carpenter, Cyril: 1 male 20-30; 1 male 60-70; 1 female 20-30; 1 female 60-70.
Carpenter, Cyril Jr: 1 male 20-30; 2 females under 5; 1 female 20-30.
Carpenter, Joseph: 1 male 5-10; 2 males 10-15; 1 male 15-20; 1 male 40-50; 2 females 5-10; 2 females 30-40.
Carpenter, Tilghman: 1 male under 5; 1 male 10-15; 1 male 30-40; 1 female 5-10; 1 female 30-40.

Given that Mary is buried in Greenfield and that she died in 1834, it seems fairly safe to assume that Cyril and his family had moved to Greenfield prior to 1834.  He apparently bought land in 1808.  Was this when he purchased the Greenfield lot?

1850 Census Roll 793, Page 250

The Sickler's Pond Cemetery can be difficult to find. The easiest way to get there is as follows: 1) exit at the Tompkinsville Exit on Route 81, 2) when you exit the Tompkinsville Exit (exit 202 onto Route 107) you immediately go West, 3) Very shortly (maybe a half mile or less) you will turn right so that you are heading North going parallel to Route 81, 4) after going north about 1.5 miles you will hit an intersection. At this intersection will be the Worth Baptist Church, 5) at this intersection you go east, which will take you over Route 81, 6) shortly after you cross over Route 81 (maybe a quarter mile at most), you will see an old cemetery on the left of the road, 7) Shortly past this cemetery the road will take a dogleg type turn to the left.  In the middle of this turn you will be able to turn right onto two compacted dirt and gravel roads.  This doglegged paved road which intersects with two dirt roads sometimes appears as a normal four-way intersection on some maps.  You will also note that just prior to this "intersection", on the right side of the road is another Carpenter cemetery.  8) At this intersection, you will turn right, and then will immediately be faced with the two dirt roads, 9) you take the dirt road on the left. 10) after about a half mile you will go across a very small bridge.  If you stop on this bridge you will see Sickler's pond on your left, and a smaller pond on your right, which is the downstream side. 11) As soon as you cross the bridge, the Carpenter cemetery will be on your right, along the side of the pond, about 200 feet from the bridge.  The easiest way to get to the cemetery is to continue going until you reach the first developed property.  On this property there is a house trailer.  If you tresspass along the side of this property , you will be able to see a field stone wall in the right rear of the property.  If you go over the fieldstone wall and head toward the pond, you will almost certainly hit the cemetery.  If you choose to not trespass, be prepared for an almost impassable and hellacious trip either through very thick overgrowth, or along an extremely marshy swamp.

I found the following partial deed involving Cyril Carpenter:
Ezra Stundavand? and Milla his wife to Cyril Carpenter. This indenture made the twenty seventh day of September in the year of our Lord one thousand, eight hundred, and eight Between Ezra Sturdivant? and Milla his wife of the township of Harford County of Luzerne and State of Pennsylvania on the one part and Cyril Carpenter on the other part of the above mentioned town county & state yeomans whereas the said Ezra Stundavant is lawfully seizes.....
