She was born Feb. 8, 1915, in Washington County, a daughter of George W. and Mary A. Carpenter Bayless. Mrs. Frere was a homemaker.
She was married to Howard Haynes who preceded her in death. Later she married Larry Frere who also preceded her in death.
She is survived by two sons and three daughters, Bernard Huff and his wife, Anna Belle of Sistersville, W.Va., Wilma Bailey and her husband, Glen of St. Marys, Violet Treisch of Cleveland, Geneva Norris and her husband, Donald of New Manchester, W.Va., Orland Haynes and his wife, Erma of Cleveland; and 21 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by two brothers, Leonard Bayless and Richard Bayless; and six sisters, Edith Luke, Mary Hane, Audrey Andrews, Mildred Mayo, Olive Mercer, Helen Lamitina.
In addition to her parents, and her husbands, she was preceded in death by two infant children, Marvin Eugene and Judy Ann; and four brothers, Howard Bayless, Orlen Kenneth Bayless, George Bayless, Robert Bayless; and five sisters, Velma Bayless, Thelma Bayless, Garnet Skinner, Lillian Hauser, Opal Edgar.
Funeral sevices will be held 2:30 p.m. Saturday, June 1, 2002, at McClure-Schafer-Lankford Funeral Home. Burial in Newport Cemetery. Friends may call from Friday morning until the hour of the service. Family will be present from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Friday

Clara Olive Mercer, 93, of Marietta, left this earth to meet her Lord at 8 p.m. on Monday (Feb. 13, 2012), at Marietta Center. She was born on June 29, 1918, at Newport to George and Mary Carpenter Bayless. Olive had been employed at the Westview Pottery. She was a Methodist by faith and enjoyed her flowers, birds and her yard.
On June 16, 1947, she married Sumner "Sam" Mercer who preceded her in death on July 12, 2010. Olive is survived by one son and one daughter, Charlotte Connolly of Marietta and Marvin (Shelby) Hanes of Mt. Dora, Fla.; grandchildren, Mark (Dee) Connolly, Tim (Zoe) Connolly, Teresa (Fred) Stone, Sandra Briesemister and her friend Jim Weeks, Marvin (Kelly) Hanes, Jr., Pamela (Bob) Kirkland, Debby Patterson and several great grandchildren. She is also survived by two brothers, Richard (Shirley) Bayless of Circleville and Leonard Bayless of Newport; and three sisters: Edith Luke and Mildren Mayo both of North Canton and Audrey Andrews of Souderton, Pa., sister-in-law Betty Bayless of St. Marys, W.Va.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Shirley A. Binegar Nameth; brothers, Robert, George, Kenneth; and sisters, Bertha Fere, Mary Hane and Helen Lamitina; and son-in-law, Paul Connolly.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday (Feb. 16) at McClure-Schafer-Lankford Funeral Home with Pastor Gale Lauderman officiating. Burial will follow in Brabham Cemetery. Homer Hanes, 74, of Moss Run, O., died Sunday at his residence.
He was born in Newport, a son of the late John and Ida Thomas Hanes.
He was in the construction business all his life.
He is survived by his wife, Margaret Neader Huck Hanes; one son,
Marvin Hanes, Mt. Dora, Fla.; two daughters, Mrs. Paul (Charlotte) Connelly
and Mrs. Frank (Shirley) Binegar, both of Marietta; one stepson, Gerald
Huck of Marietta; five stepdaughters, Mrs. Robert (Kathleen) Vossert and
Mrs. Gale (Madeline) Strickler both of Marietta; Mrs. David (Marguerite)
Morris of Bartlesville, Okla.; and Mrs. Richard (Carol) Hatcher of
Watkinsville, Ga.; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; two
sisters, Mrs. Gerald (Helen) Strickler of Moss Run and Mrs. Edna Worstell,
Massillon, O.; and two brothers, Ralph and Fredrick Hanes, both of
Marietta.
He was preceded in death by four brothers, Raymond, Howard, Herbert
and Elmer; and one sister, Golda.
Services were held Tuesday at the Hadley Funeral Home, Marietta with
the Rev. Duane Biehl officiating. Burial was in the Moss Run Cemetery.

Sumner A. "Sam" Mercer, 94, of Marietta, passed away on Monday (July 12, 2010) at Marietta Center.
He was born on Oct. 1, 1915, in Marietta to Charles and Inez Mercer. He had been employed at Brickwede Furniture Company, Union Carbide and was a custodian at Peoples Bank. Sam enjoyed raising cattle, coon hunting, mowing grass and flower gardening.
On June 16, 1947, Sam married Olive Hanes, who survives with one daughter, Shirley Mercer; one stepdaughter, Charlotte Connolly; and one stepson, Marvin (Shelby) Hanes; grandchildren, Mark (Dee) Connolly, Tim (Zoe) Connolly, Teresa (Fred) Stone, Sandra (Jim) Briesemister, Marvin Hanes Jr., Pamela (Bob) Kirkland Debby Patterson, Teresa (Duane) Gallion, Susan (Radney) Whipkey, Theodora (Chuck) Hesson, Glen LeMaster, Hank Allender, Paul Sebring, Duane Sebring, Vernon Sebring, Faron Sebring, Debby Wright; and several great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Betty Surrena; granddaughter, Elizabeth Allender; grandson, Jessie Surrena; son, Charles Mercer; stepdaughter, Shirley Binegar Nameth; brother, Elmer Mercer; and sister, Irene Conley.
