PFC William Stanley Carpenter, U.S. Army, was KIA only three weeks before the fighting ceased. He was an ammunition bearer in Company D, 393rd Infantry Regiment, 99th Infantry Division when he was killed on 11 April 1945 in the vicinity of Hilchbubach in the Ruhr Pocket of Germany.

K.I.A. = Killed in Action.  He is buried in the Margraten Cemetery in Holland.

William had been a clerk in an A & P Store on Broad Street in Woodbury, New Jersey before being drafted in March of 1944 into the  Army.  Note: his age was a bit over 36 years of age. This is a little old for an infantryman.
His family, at the time of his induction into the military, was with his wife's parents in Philadelphia, PA. He was probably working at the Baldwin Locomotive Works at his induction. Per Letter update 11 Jan 2005.
His son, named after him, retired as a Lt. Gen. in the U.S. Army.
Note:  He was not a Sergeant, nor was he killed in northern Italy as per his son. Phone conversation with W.S. Jr.  12/2004 JRC
