COMMENT:
On 22 January 1944, the 30th Regiment conducted amphibious operations at Anzio. This marked the 2nd Battalion's fifth amphibious operation and was also its most costly battle. On 4 June 1944, the regiment entered Rome.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/30th_Infantry_Regiment_(United_States)
In late May (1944), VI Corps broke out of the Anzio beachhead in Operation Diadem with the 3rd Division in the main thrust.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/3rd_Infantry_Division_(United_States)
Breakout
At 5:45 a.m. May 23, 1944, 1,500 Allied artillery pieces commenced bombardment. Forty minutes later the guns paused as attacks were made by close air support and then resumed as the infantry and armour moved forward.[59] The first day's fighting was intense: the 1st Armored Division lost 100 tanks and 3rd Infantry Division suffered 955 casualties. The Germans suffered too, with the 362nd Infantry Division estimated to have lost 50% of its fighting strength.[60]
In the afternoon of May 25, Cisterna finally fell to 3rd Division who had to go house to house winkling out the German 362nd Infantry which had refused to withdraw and, as a consequence, had virtually ceased to exist by the end of the day.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Anzio#Breakout
On 23 to 25 May 1944 the 3rd Infantry Division, 30th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Battalion attacked on the left flank of the 3rd Division northward from Ponte Rotto on the west side of the Femminamorta Canal then crossing just west of La Villa on the railroad line. The 30th took most of their casualties while pushing past the railroad and crossing Highway 7 northwest of the City of Cisterna. This was where they were hit heavily by artillery and direct fire from the German 954th Regiment, of the German 362nd Infantry Division, in the hills above them. The 30th completed the envelopment of Cisterna by linking up with the 15th Regiment, who was on the right flank of the 3rd Division, near Casa Montoni on the afternoon of the 24th. Cisterna was completely secured by the late afternoon on the 25th.

COMBAT ACTION AND MIA RESEARCH:
PFC Kenneth L. Carpenter’s name is on the “Roll of Honor” for the missing at the US Military Cemetery at: https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/56307261/kenneth-l-carpenter
On the white marble walls of the chapel are engraved the names of 3,095 of the missing during the North African, Sicily and Italian campaigns. His name does NOT contain a Rosette mark indicating that his remains were since recovered and identified.
There are ten graves labeled unknown at this Sicily-Rome American Cemetery. PFC Kenneth Carpenter maybe one of them. *
Each of these unknown graves are listed as: Here Rests In Honored Glory A Comrade In Arms Known But To God
Technically both Find A Grave entries are a Cenotaph. But …
One of those unknowns was found in a civilian cemetery on Route 7 near City of Cisterna after the war in Europe ended. But the American soldier could not be identified when he was recovered. And that location was close to where PFC Kenneth Carpenter went missing.**  Is it him? “maybe.”
Please see the map at:  https://battlearchives.com/products/anzio-breakout-battle-map - zoom in and you can see the civilian cemetery just north east of Cisterna and the solid blue line is that which the 2nd Battalion of the US 30th Infantry Regiment took in its envelopment of Cisterna.***
Another unknown US soldier was found a month or so later after the cleanup of the battlefield in the Mussolini Canal. This when water was restored for irrigation after the breakout into the canal system. Where the specific location of the remains were recovered in the canal was not given to me.  Could his remains have floated down the Femminamorta Canal into the main Mussolini Canal?***  Is it PFC Carpenter? “maybe.”
However, we may find out in the next 5-7 years. The reason is that … “in October 2020, DPAA accomplished the first disinterment’s of Unknowns linked to the Anzio invasion in Italy. Those remains were interred in Sicily-Rome (Page 9)  American Cemetery, which has a moderate climate year-round. We are continuing with plans to disinter more Unknowns associated with the Anzio campaign …”  See: https://www.dpaa.mil/Portals/85/EM%20Disinterments%20Video.pdf
I recently had a chance to call and talk to Sarah Barksdale, who is one of the managers the Europe-Mediterranean Directorate of the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency. Those two unknowns cited above have been disinterred and processing has started. She told me it is “a very long and tedious process.”**** And it “could take another 5-7 years.”
And when I asked if either could be PFC Kenneth Carpenter, she paused and said softly, “Maybe.” Then after another short pause, “His name is on the short list of those missing in action in that specific area.”
I found out that DNA samples from his family has not been obtained. I am in the process of finding living siblings or close cousins for obtaining DNA samples for identification efforts.  And I am trying to update the related Find A Grave memorials to encourage interest.
I hope you have found this interesting. And that hopefully PFC Kenneth L. Carpenter is one of the two Unknowns cited above.
