Notes for DAVID CARPENTER: (Submitted by John L. Carpenter of NH 1/21/2000).
Notes & Sources from Ann Carter Dennis, San Antonio, Tx., descendant of this
family.  Her E-MAIL is:  ADennis100@aol.com
David & his wife Azubah Came to Landgrove ,VT In August 1787 ,after their
daughter , Margaret was born, from Ashford,CT.  In 1789 David bought land from
Captain Utley, for 60 pounds, the land north of Capt. Daniel Allen's
"improvements," and on the opposite side of the road. This land  flows through
what is now known as "Carpenter Brook". David was born in 1759 in Ashford,CT
the youngest of 11 children of Uriah Carpenter and Sarah Hayward. Uriah  Died
in the Havana Cuba Expedition led by the British in 1762. Uriah died in Havana
in the hot, pestilent summer that followed the Spanish surrender.
David the fatherless boy, was bound out as a apprentice and received no
formal education. He later stole his Indenture papers and hid them under a
rock. Years later he returned and found them intact still.  In his teens he ran
away from his master and enlisted in the Continental Army. He was a guard at
the execution of Maj. Andre the British spy. returning to Ashford ,CT. he
taught himself to read, write, and keep accounts, and started the career as a
up-and -coming young farmer that he continued to be successfully in
Landgrove,VT. Over a period of years he acquired a large amount of land  in
Landgrove and the nearby area of Weston,VT. On the Daniel Allen tract, which
he had bought from his father-in-law, built before 1800 a substantial new
house which served as a residence for his large family and a tavern for
travelers. The farm is now only access able by car from Weston,VT. since part
of the highway running through the farm is a impassable swamp. Only a cellar
hole remained today. A few shuddered feet south of it is the little family
cemetery where Daniel A. Carpenter wife Sibble and four children are buried.
David moved his family to Keene,N.H.in 1807, he settled near the present day
Wright House on the Hurricane Rd formerly called the " Westmoreland Rd. "
which is saltbox in construction.
In 1829 David and his son, Sumner (1802 - 1875), became the fiirst known
owners to open it as a tavern to accomadate the stagecoach travelers, lone
horsemen , and drovers as a as candle light time settled over the narrow, hilly
road.  Business at the tavern flourished between 1820 - 1829. In 1825 David
moved down the hill to what now is called "The Dickinson Place on the
Dickinson Rd. he purchased the house  and land from Thomas Dwinell Jr. In 1829
David sold the tavern to Samuel Streeter. In 1829 David passed the Keene
Property to his son Sumner and let him run the farm and continued to live
there untill his death. When David died he was one of the top ten property tax
payers in Keene,NH His property was worth forty-thousand dollars. He was one
of the top ten property holders in Keene, NH at the time of his death.

He wrote in 1844 that he lived on four acres on the west side of Main Street in Keene. His large home was very often filled with grandchildren who made many happy visits to the home of their Grandparents Carpenter. David Carpenter lived to be 86 years of age, and his wife Azubah lived to be 83. Their son, Ira Carpenter wrote the following to his sister Azubah shortly after the death of his father: "When Mother asked Father if he had not something to say to her, after a pause he said, 'Remember your latter end.' Now what could our dear Father have said more proper or important and Does not Gods revelation say "O that man were wise and would consider his latter end."

E-MAIL: Sat, 17 Jun 2000 From: ADennis100@aol.com
Dear Carpenters,
Yesterday I received official approval from the national DAR for placement of
a Revolutionary marker on the grave of my ancestor, David Carpenter.  He was
born in January 1759 in Ashford, Windham County, Connecticut and died April
4, 1845 in Keene, Cheshire County, New Hampshire.  David fought throughout
the entire Revolutionary War, participating in such events as the hanging of
Major Andre and the Battle of Saratoga with the subsequent surrender of
Burgoyne.
The ceremony will be held at the Washington Street Cemetery in Keene, NH,
hopefully, on July 21 at 1:00.  I do hope that any nearby Carpenters or
interested friends will be able to join us.  I would especially love to hear
from any of David's direct descendants.
Many thanks to John L Carpenter and, also, the Ashuelot Chapter of the DAR
for  their local help in this presentation to honor David Carpenter.
Sincerely, Ann Carter Dennis San Antonio, TX.
NOTE: Ann Carter Dennis initiated the Search for David she is 4 th Grt Grand
daughter of this David.  See the 3 pictures of this event in MISC PICS under
David Carpenter 18386.
John L. Carpenter of NH took the pictures and added David's Farm Pic. Which
is David 's last house.

E-MAIL (CORRECTIONS): Sun, 6 Aug 2000 From: ADennis100@aol.com
Dear John,
The DAR service for David Carpenter was very nice and certainly a due honor
for someone who had fought throughout the Revolution.
I appreciate your forwarding the information on his life to me.  Quite a bit
of it is incorrect.  David's life was very well documented with primary
sources, such as surviving letters, legal papers, wills, pensions, etc.
Secondary sources have been published throughout the years by well meaning
persons with incomplete knowledge.
You have been very kind in the past to let me correct some glaring mistakes.
We both know that when something is published incorrectly, the error
perpetuates itself for years.
Please allow me to correct two of the errors:
David Carpenter died in his own home.  The year before he died he wrote that
he lived on four acres on the west side of Main Street in Keene. I have the
full inventory of the estate with each room of the house designated.  It
appeared to be a beautiful home. He never lived with his son Caleb.
David may have given a home to his son Sumner, but, if so, Sumner did not
live there until he died.  Sumner moved to Chester, VT and died there.
The story of the apprecticeship is not documented.  We may need to designate
it as a legend.  David Carpenter could definitely read and write, whether he
was self taught, I do not know, but I doubt it.  His stepfather was a school
teacher.  His step brother attended Dartmouth.
Thank you for allowing me to correct some of this, John.  I feel like it is
so important for posterity.
I hate to burden you with such a lengthy response.  I would like to send you
the speech that I made at the DAR presentation.  Please let me know if you
have any questions. Sincerely, Ann.
Speech in MISC PIC file under David Carpenter 18386.

CARPENTER, David
Vermont Historical Magazine, No XI, October 1867, p 197

Among the other early settlers in this town [Landgrove, Bennington County,
Vermont] was David CARPENTER. He was born in Connecticut in 1759, was a
poor boy; bound out to service at an early age; but as he became older,
dissatisfied with his usage, and determined to live; stole his indenture
[papers] from his master's desk and hid them under a stone on the premises
(where after he became of age he returned and found them safe) and left. He
soon after joined the Revolutionary army; was present and one of the guard at
the execution of Maj. ANDRE; and soon after the close of the war settled in
this town. His first child was born here [Landgrove, Bennington County,
Vermont], 26 August 1787 (the first birth on record in this town). He never
had the advantages even of a common school education; but by his own exertion
learned to read and write sufficient to keep his own accounts. [Excerpt from
a section on the history of Landgrove, Bennington County, Vermont.]

(NEHGS Photoduplication, 1997; Hartford: Connecticut State Library, 1914).
The index has one page listing for Azubah ALLEN as you probably know for
have the info already. There are *only* 2 pages listed for Daniel and one
of them is the birth of your Azubah:
p. 11:  "Danll Allen of Mashamoquet Entered his purpofs of Mariage wth
Hannah Davis of Roxbr 7br 11th: 1705."
p. 133:  "Azubah Daughter of Daniel Allen Jur & Mary his Wife born March
5th. 1766."
Now the Dan who md Hannah in 1705 may be the father of your Dan, father of
Azubah, but he seems too early. From this listing the first Dan was "of
Mashamoqet" which was in that day and time Pomfret. Soooooo it might
behoove you to *do* the Barbour Collection of CT VRs of Pomfret 1705-1850.

7526. Ira Carpenter

MARRIAGES: Two possibly three (maybe S. Dodge). No children noted. See below.
E-MAIL: Mon, 29 Jul 1999 From: Terry Lee Carpenter of TX at
diluvius@flash.net  To: John Carpenter
Ira Carpenter was born on 29 Jan 1805 at Landgrove VT, died on 19 Sep
1863 at Natchez, Adams Co. MS [NHS].  He was a descendant of the
Rehoboth branch of the English Carpenters  as follows:  Ira/7 of David/6
of Uriah (not Josiah)/5 of Benjamin/4 of Benjamin/3 of Joseph/2 of
William/1Carpenter of England and Rehoboth MA [ABC].  He settled at
Natchez, Adams Co. MS in the 1830s and lived there until his death.  He
married first on 8 Jul 1830 to Ann Maria Hunt.  She died on 11 Oct 1830
and he married on 4 Apr 1833 to Sarah E. Lloyd.  He may have married a
third time, to Sarah Dodge.  It is not known for certain whether he had
any children, but it does not appear that he did [NAMP].  He was a
Baptist and active in that denomination in Mississippi [RAM].

I would like to comment on Ira's marriages.
The marriage dates for Ann Maria Hunt and Sarah E. Loyd are correct.  Sarah
was born September 15, 1805 and died on December 27, 1886 in Natchez, MS.
There is confusion as to Sarah Dodge.  Sarah Dodge is buried with Ira and
Sarah in the Natchez City Cemetery behind a wonderful wrought iron fence and
gate.  Her tombstone information states that she was born in Salem, MA in
1779 and died in Natchez on February 28, 1844.  The fact that she was about
25 years older than Ira and also that she was "Sarah Dodge" and not "Sarah
Dodge Carpenter" indicates that she was not a third wife to Ira.  I think
(maybe wrongly) that she is the mother of Sarah Loyd Carpenter who perhaps
went to Natchez with Ira and Sarah. Also, in Ira's genealogy please correct
the "Josiah5" to "Uriah5".

Ann Maria Hunt

DEATH:Probably died in Natches, MS.

The men who located here in 1792, were Ozias Crampton,
Daniel Carpenter,  ...
The father of Daniel Carpenter was born in England, came
to America when a young man, married Hannah Needham and
settled in Greenwich, Mass., where his son was born. The
latter, about the year 1775, married Lucy Nichols and located
in South Wilbraham where were born the following children,
viz.: 1st, Polly, born Nov. 27, 1776 ; 2d, John; 3d, Artemas;
4th, Daniel ; 5th, Caleb ; 6th, Lucy.
Mr. Carpenter made his first purchase in Ladd Hollow,*
*Ladd Hollow included a part of Chittenden and that part of Pittsford now
known as East Pittsiord.

1792 - This land is described as "
lying on Little Eiver called East
Krick," and was purchased of John Simonds of Leominster,
Mass., being a part of the second-division of the original right
of John Hubbard. It is not known what time he removed hisfamily
into Pittsford, but probably soon after he made his pur
chase here. He and Nathaniel Ladd* are reputed to have
been the first two settlers in Ladd Hollow. Mr. Carpenter
made his first clearing and built a log house about where Mrs.
Eddy now lives. He afterwards built a house farther south,
where his son Artemas lived many years. It is now owned
by D. Gould. Mr. Carpenter died in 1811.

Richard M. Powers, son of Jeremiah, formerly of Green

3234. William Barney Carpenter

Number 1608 in the Carpenter Memorial on page 234. Family is number 532 on page 393.
He went to Newville, OH thence to Mansfield, OH and lastly to Colorado.  A Miss Osburn says he died in Wilbraham, MA in 1809 or 1810.  The Compiler of the Carpenter Memorial thinks she is right, as she has always been found to be very accurate in genealogical matters.

Is there a son named Clark missing from this family?  Or was it a son-in-law?  Anyway he was supposed to be a Baptist minister.  See Justin's notes.

Notes for Lydia S. Haney:
Obituary from the Kahoka newspaper:
Lydia S. Haney was born in Adams County, Ohio, January 23, 1836; when a child her family
moved to Logan Co., same state. Oct. 11, 1860 near Big Springs, Ohio, she was married to
Geo. M. Easton. During the spring of 1866 the family left Ohio and located in Boone Co., Iowa.
After a two year's residence they moved from Iowa to Schuyler Co., Mo. and from this last
locality Bor. and sister Easton became residents of Kahoka, this state, where after a gradual
decline in health for over a year sister Easton passed from among us April 22, 1904. Their
family consists of seven children, five sons and two daughters, one of the daughters having died
in 1889. The funeral services took place from the family residence conducted by the write
assisted by the Pastor of the Baptist church, April 23, at 3:00 p.m., after which the remains were
placed to rest in Kahoka cemetery. The family are assured the sympathy and condolence of
many friends. Sister Easton in her youth gave her heart to God and maintained her Christian
faith until transferred from the church militant to the church triumphant. It is in this Christina
character the husband and children find their heart relieving solace. ---S.D. Kendall
The biography of Lydia's son, Thomas J. Easton in the Nebraskana Society [http://
www.usgennet.org/usa/ne/topic/resources/OLLibrary/Nebraskana/pages/nbka0098.htm] states
that he was the son of "George McCulloch and Lydia Stuyvesant (Haney) Easton." That source
is the only one that has ever been found indicating her middle name. If this was actually her
middle name, could she have been the namesake of a grandmother, Lydia Stuyvesant? Haney,
wife of James Haney?

MARRIAGE: Probably married more than once.  Spouse listed is too young for some children.

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Updates by John R. Carpenter follow
SOME CONFLICTS with the above ...

MILITARY:
We have no evidence that this Reuben Carpenter served in the American Revolutionary War or provided material support.  The first hint (which may be wrong) is cited in BURIAL below.
The second is a 1812 LAND record that clarifies why he got the Military Land Grant. See below.
The military Land Grant was not for his service but due to the service of another whose heir gave his rights to it to him.
FYI - His father served in the Revolutionary War and is so documented.
AND as a Justice of the Peace he helps others make claim for service in the Revolutionary War.

HISTORY OF FRANKLIN COUNTY.
CHAPTER X I V.
BLENDON TOWNSHIP.
https://www.genealogybug.net/franklin_1858/blendon.htm
THIS township was stricken off from Sharon, and established the 6th of March, 1815, by the name of Harrison, (the original Harrison Township, described in Chapter II, having been chiefly stricken from Franklin County in the formation of Pickaway County, in 1810, and the remaining part of it being included in the townships of Hamilton and Madison.). In 1825, the county Commissioners changed the name from Harrison to Blendon. The township consists of just one original surveyed township, of five miles square; being township number two, in range seventeen, United States Military Lands. The settlement of this township was not commenced quite as soon as some of the surrounding ones. The first settlers here, were Messrs. Edward Phelps and Ezra Griswold. They arrived here from Windsor, Connecticut, in 1806; the former is cut the first tree ever felled by a white man in the township. Mr.
page 235
Phelps died in 1840, aged eighty-one years. Mr. Griswold has resided in the township ever since 1806, and still (1858) is in the enjoyment of a sound constitution and good health. In 1808, Messrs. George Osborn and Ethan Palmer, from Windsor, and Francis Olmsted and his family of sons, (of whom Gen. Philo H. is one), arrived from Simsbury, Connecticut; and about the same time Cruger Wright settled here, and John Mattoon and **** Reuben Carpenter, from Vermont, **** Henry Hone, from Pennsylvania, Isaac Harrison, John and William Cooper, from Virginia. Subsequently, apt. John Bishop, Timothy Lee, Esq., Gideon Hart, Esq., the Westervelts, and others.
There are, in this township, two villages; Westerville, laid out by Matthew Westervelt, in July, 1839; and Amalthea, of Central College, laid out by the College Board of Trustees, on the lands of T. Lee, Esq., in 1849.

The population of this township, agreeably to the census of 1840, wa 972. In 1850, it was 1, 303. In 1853, the township contained thirteen school districts, and an aggregate of 548 youth between the ages of five and twenty-one years. In 1857, the agregate of such youth was 547.

COMMENT:
Morrow County was created in 1848 from the counties of Knot, Marion, Delaware and Richland.
THIS MEANS in 1812 Morrow County did not exist.
Using the town of Mount Gilead as the center of present day Morrow County, we find that that location was in Marion County in 1817.  At least per Wikipedia - See:  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mount_Gilead,_Ohio#History
BUT ... Marion County was not created until 1820 and it was created from Delaware County. Delaware County was created from Franklin County in 1808. And Franklin was created in 1803 from Ross County.
So in 1812 the land grant cited above cited above was likely in Delaware County.

NOTE:
Pioneer Cemetery is located at Westerville's coporate limits on S. State Street. The original section was known as Jameson Cemetery, named for Robert Jameson, who donated the land. Over the years it was renamed to West Church Pioneer and later changed to Pioneer Cemetery. The cemetery was maintained for many years by the Blendon Township Trustees. In the 1970s, as Westerville's corporate limit was extended to include this land, the City took over ownership of Pioneer.
It was established in 1817, with the first burial being Eliza Palmer, infant daughter of Ethan Palmer. Within the Jameson section of Pioneer can be found many of Blendon Townships earliest pioneers. Among them are Robert and Margaret McCutcheon Jameson, Isaac and Ursala Clark Griswold, and brothers Benjamin and Simeon Moore, with their families. There are also numerous Jameson, Schrock and Osborn family members buried here.

Death: 15 Sep 1830 (aged 67–68) Franklin County, Ohio, USA
Burial: Pioneer Cemetery, Westerville, Franklin County, Ohio, USA
Memorial #: 33032186
Bio:
Reuben is one of 14 children born to Wlliam Carpenter (1721-1809) and Hannah Needham (1727-1781). Several early family histories state he married Anna Rood in Vermont, about 1787. But I am unable to find any marriage record for Anna Rood to Reuben Carpenter in VT or MA or CT.

Reuben's sister Anna Carpenter, married Moses Rood. This may have caused some confusion over the name Anna in those early histories.

There was a marriage between Reuben Carpenter and Anna Stacy, on 09 Feb 1788 recorded in Wilbraham, MA. Found several sources of this marriage under Mass Town and Vtal Rec. Also on familysearch for Mass Marriages, 1695-1910. batch M54142-1, Mass-ODM, film #0904738, 0904739, 14765 - Anna Stacy married Reuben Carpenter on 09 Feb 1788 in Wilbraham, Hampden, Mass. The marriage was recorded in CT also, and references to Somers, CT on 16 April 1788. A record of the marriage is common for both places of residence.

Reuben and Anna settled in Barre, VT shortly after the marriage, and reside near Anna Stacy's brothers, Mahlan and Warham Stacy. So I am certain we have the correct Anna and Reuben.

Rebuen Carpenter served in the Revolutionary War under John Carpenter, along with Jotham Carpenter, who was a brother to our Reuben.

Reuben Carpenter - Private, Capt. John Carpenter's co. of guards stationed at Springfield; enlisted June 24, 1779; discharged Sept 24, 1779; enlistment, 3 months; also, same co; joined June 1, 1780; service to Sept 1, 1780, 3 mos; enlistment, 8 months from time of joining at Springfield; also, same co.; service from Sept 6, 1780, to date of discharge, Feb 6, 1781, 5 mos.

By 1808, Reuben and Anna and their children, left Vermont for Franklin County, Ohio, and settled on the west side of Alum Creek with other Vermont families. Reuben and Anna raised at least 5 children: Lucy Carpenter, Lavinia Carpenter, John Carpenter, Cyrus Stacy Carpenter, and Royal Carpenter.

There is currently (1994) no visible marker for Reuben and his wife Anna in the cemetery. I am looking through older family photos to see if we might have a photo of their tombstones. If anyone has one, please let me know!

Anna W. Stacy

GRAVE: image
Anna W. Stacy Carpenter
Birth: 1762
Death: 17 Sep 1835 (aged 72–73) Franklin County, Ohio, USA
Burial: Pioneer Cemetery, Westerville, Franklin County, Ohio, USA
Memorial #: 33032338
Bio:
Anna Stacy married Reuben Carpenter on 09 Feb 1788 and the marriage is recorded in Wilbraham, MA. Some histories name Reuben's wife as Anna or Hannah Rood. It is unknown if Reuben married two different Anna's or if histories had incorrect information. I have not been able to find a marriage between Reuben Carpenter and Anna/Hannah Rood. Reuben Carpenter's sister Anna however, married Moses Rood.

Reuben and Anna (Stacy) Carpenter moved to Barre, VT and resided near her two brothers.

By 1808, Reuben and Anna left Vermont and followed other VT families to Franklin County, Ohio. They settled on the west side of Alum Creek near Westerville, Ohio. Anna may be related to Moses Rood of Barre, VT who married Reuben Carpenter's sister Anna.

John Wilson Carpenter, son of Reuben and Anna, married Huldah Tinkham. Huldah may be related to the Isaac Tinkham who also came to Ohio by 1816.

HISTORY OF FRANKLIN COUNTY.
CHAPTER I.
FROM THE FIRST SETTLEMENT UNTIL THE ORGANIZATION OF THE COUNTY, IN 1803.
https://www.genealogybug.net/franklin_1858/001.htm#
About the year 1799 or 1800, Robert Balentine erected a poor kind of mill on the run near Gay street, on the Columbus plat; and, near the same time, Mr. John D. Rush erected an inferior mill on the Scioto, a short distance above Franklinton.  They were, however, both poor concerns, and soon fell to ruins.  A horse-mill was then resorted to, and kept up for some time; but the first mill of any considerable advantage to the county, was erected by Colonel Kilbourne, near Worthington, about the year 1805.
Page 6
About the same time, Carpenter's mill on Whetstone, in what is now Delaware County, and Dyer's on Darby, were erected.   ...

Bio:
I found this short biography about Dr. James Hosea Chessman Miller in book :

"History of Colorado" volume 3 - 1918 -
by Wilbur Fiske Stone

***************NOTE*****************
I HAVE NOT VERIFIED ANY OF THIS
possible Military service yet, but put it here in case others can help verify his Military service.

" Dr. James Hosea Chessman Miller was born at Rushville, New York, in 1800 and died at Jackson, Ohio, in 1883 (1880).....

Dr. Miller, surreptitiously left his home in New York in 1819 and walked and worked his way across the country to the Kanawha Salt Works, in what is now West Virginia, and from that -point traveled southward by salt rafts to New Orleans. He fell in with a body of trappers from Texas, then a state of Mexico, and with them came for furs over the Cochetopa pass to the Arkansas river. From that point
they continued ou their northerly way, striking the head of Cherry creek, and proceeded down to its junction with the Platte, camping at its mouth in 1821 and 1822, long before Colorado had become American territory.

Returning to the Gulf, Dr. Miller afterward went to
Bolivia, South America, and fought the Spanish with General Bolivar until the Bolivians secured their independence from Spanish rule about 1824. Later Dr. Miller returned home and married but after a few years
again heard "the call of the wild," his taste for adventure taking him to Texas in 1836. There, with other heroes, actuated by a love of liberty, he fought until the independence of the state was secured.

Then, at the request of the chief of the Mexican army, who had become attached to Dr. Miller, he went to Mexico and for two years was an officer at Zacatecas. He returned home, however, at the time of the Civil war and attempted to enlist with the "Boys in Blue" of the Union
army. He was at that time sixty-one years of age and the board was inclined to reject him on account of his years, but he insisted he was only "forty-four past," the limit being forty-five. They laughingly accepted him as a private but he was soon transferred to the surgeons' department, where he used his medical ability, serving in
that way throughout the war, thus doing his full duty for oppressed humanity in this and other lands. Later, taking up his abode at Jackson, Ohio, he there remained until his demise in 1883. His wife, who was born in Vermont in 1803, passed away in Jackson in 1877."
