NOTE: Before relocating to Oakland Co, Wm lived in Livingston Co for several years. In his property dealings he is listed as from Niagra Co, NY.

John, I want to give you an update on the genealogy of William Carpenter-147129
His death date is undisputed in the records.  Strangely, I find no support of any kind for the birth date you give here, except that it is the birthdate I find in family trees.  It does not agree with the ages at death which are given in the state death record (82 years, 10 mo, 28 days) or the tombstone (82 years, 10 mo, 26 days) or the obituary in the Milford Times (82 years, 10 mo, 21 days).  Although these ages are disparate, they all point to a birth in late December 1793: 24 Dec, 26 Dec, or 31 Dec.  For my own tree I decided on 26 Dec 1793, following the tombstone.  Normally the tombstone is not the best source, but the state death record informant was ignorant of the names of the parents of William, and was otherwise unreliable.  The obituary is impossible to correct once the presses are running.  The tombstone is likely to have been double-checked.

There are only two living families descended from George Carpenter, and neither of us has photos of him even though he lived his whole life during the age of photography.  Neither do we have photos of his parents. I hope living descendants of his siblings have preserved photos, so that I may eventually come across them.

Last week I visited William's township of residence and of death: South Lyon, Oakland, Michigan to see a genealogist at a public library there.  But I was not able to discover anything new about William except the obituary I just mentioned.  Neither did the library have photos of the family.

I have William serving from Sep-Nov 1812 as a substitute for
someone else. (NARA War of 1812 Pension Application Files Index 1812-1815).
This doc also has them marrying 21 Mar 1815 in Assagochie, NY and living in

Or maybe a real place like Arshamonaque (Suffolk), Ashantee (Livingtson), Asharoken (Suffolk), with a couple of Ashlands and even a Ashokan (Ulster).

NOTE:  This William is NOT number 93-3 in the T. Carpenter book.
WILLIAM R. CARPENTER (RIN 435) of Alden, had at least
five children (listed in his will) by his first wife (name unknown) who died
previous to the will dated 1866.  His second wife, HARRIET is mentioned in the
same will (document # 3457 at the Buffalo, N.Y. courthouse).  Per 1976 book.
Children are listed with Harriet in that record and are: Joseph Carpenter (B.
no birth dates given), William, Caroline, Mary, & John B. Carpenter. First spouse
and children deceased prior to 1866 are not mentioned.
NOTE2:
The wife and children previously assigned to William Carpenter-435 - as mentioned
in the following - has been disproved by Y-DNA.
NOTE3:
This William's first wife is believed to be Mary Taylor (b. 1799) with children
Griffin Carpenter (b. 1821 with descendants), William (b. nbd given), John,
Sam, Urah, Mary Randal, Ruth Ryolds, Ann Ward, Alvira Root, and Charlot.  The
information came from Donald W. Carpenter of Ontario, Canada who received this
information from a friend on the internet (Tom Gunn in Texas).  "William
Carpenter and Mary Taylor had 10 children in Niagara (,Ontario, Canada).
William was born somewhere in NY in 1792 and moved to Niagara county in 1817."
Per letter (2/97) & Descendancy chart dated 9 Feb. 1994.
NOTE4: The William Carpenter-435 is a Carpenter line represented by Group 2 of the Carpenter Cousins Y-DNA Project.  The William Carpenter-147129 (this person) has Y-DNA from the Rehoboth Carpenter line in Group 3. A big THANK YOU to Jan Carpenter Volkmann!

Subject: Resources related to Carpenters from New England
Hi John,
I subscribe to the newsletter and find the info posted really interesting even though a lot of it pertains to the southern lines. I believe at one time you had CD’s etc of carpenter info that you sold. Do you still do that?
I am specifically looking for my 3ggranfather Israel/Isreal C. Carpenter who was born in NY in 1807. He relocated to Livingston Co MI before 1840 and is found on the census there with 3 young sons (5-15 yrs) and no female family members. He married Ruhamah we believe in Livingston, Oakland, or Clinton Co MI between 1840 and 1845 when she died in DeWitt, Clinton Co. She was born in MI. We believe she may have been a Bancroft and widow of a Fox. They had a son, Gilbert E, my 2ggrandfather. Israel married again, Louisa Hoples Stephens, a widow and they also had a son. Israel died in DeWitt Clinton Co MI in 1856. We can find no record of land ownership for Israel but family tradition has that he worked the land in Clinton Co of a William Carpenter who lived in Lyon, Oakland Co Mi. This William Carpenter was born in Potsdam St Lawrence NY in 25 Dec 1794, received a pension for service in the War of 1812 and married Mary Taylor there about 1817. Soon after he moved to Porter, Niagra, NY. In abt 1836 he moved to Livingston Co MI and then to Oakland Co, settling in Lyon Twp. He patented land in 1836 in the area. He is possibly the son of a William Carpenter in Potsdam Ny. Census records in Potsdam show a Wm Carpenter ae 45+ and 2 males old enough to serve during War of 1812. On the same page is a Clement Carpenter ae prob 25-45, a male <10, and a male 16-24. Clemant is of the right age to perhaps be an older son of William but not old enough to be the father of the male 16-24. The younger male is of the right age to be Israel. We do not know what his middle initial C actually stood for but given naming conventions, if Clemant was his father, then it possibly was Clemant. I have tried to research the Clemant angle and another dead end. Do you have any suggestions or info that may help me with my brick wall? Thanking you in advance.
