Number 1640 in the Carpenter Memorial on page 238.
Family on page 398 (# 542). A farmer. See Notes.
Isaiah Carpenter b. 8 Jan 1735 and Isaack Carpenter b. 8 Jan 1734
are probably intermixed. Both claim Mehitable Thompson as mother but one Jotham Carpenter and Jonathan Carpenter as father. This may be as simple as a dual year posting because of the calendar change in 1751. (1734/1735)
AND the death date given 17 Jan 1809 VT was once claimed by Isaiah Carpenter-20608 b. 18 Mar 1734 Hardwick, MA with parents Nathan CARPENTER-4688 (1700–1770) and Abigail Sabin-12978 (1704–1757). Yet his death date claimed was disproved because he never went to Vermont.E-MAIL: Date: Fri, 09 Feb 2001
From: Bill Wilson
Did any early Carpenters of Rehoboth marry Mayflower descendents? It
occurred to me that this was a distinct possibility. And sure enough, while
browsing through the index of the John Billington Mayflower Family I found
several familiar Carpenter names from my line.
I thought I had hit pay dirt! But as I read the fine print, I saw the
Billington book identified an error in Amos B Carpenter1s book, which
apparently throws my family line out of the Rehoboth Family completely.
The discrepancy arose when ABC apparently read incorrectly the data of 1640
Isaiah Carpenter born January 8, 1735, and should have identified him as
Isaack Carpenter born January 8, 1734/5, who died young without issue.
To clarify the problem, I have listed the descendants from both books.
Square brackets [] are mine.

[and this is the fine-print footnote:]
* Contrary to the account in Carpenter (Rehoboth) Gen pp 238, 398-9, there
is no indication that the son 3Isaiah2 (Isaack in birth record) . . . lived
to maturity. The adults described as these sons of Jotham Carpenter do not
belong to this family. . . And son Isaack, as 3Isaiah2, is mistakenly
identified as an adult Isaiah of Vermont.
Can anyone help me straighten this mess out?
Bill Wilson.Isaiah Carpenter and James Breckinridge were accused of rioting
by the New Yorkers who claimed that they had taken land under
the New Hampshire grant, within the limits of NY
territory; and further, that they had taken up arms to fight
for the land as a part of Bennington. This accusation was not
true; they were within the limits of Bennington. It arose from
the fact that they were loyal to the proposed government of
Vermont. It was about the year 1777.
Isaiah Carpenter was one of the first settlers of Salisbury,
under the New Hampshire grant; he was a conspicuous character
in the difficulties between the "Green Mountain Boys" and the
"Yorkers." Mr. Carpenter was a near neighbor of Judge Olin. The
"Yorkers" drove Carpenter from his cabin on a few acres of
clearing, and put one of their grantees in possession. One day
as the "Yorker" was chopping a tree there was a report, and a
ball whistled by his head; he supposing that it was some
hunter, kept on chopping; in a few moments there was another
report, and a second bullet struck the tree a few inches above
his head. He left for parts unknown, immediately, and Carpenter
had full possession. A short time after this, Judge Olin shot a
steer which he was killing for family use; Carpenter, hearing
the report, took his musket and came running down to Judge
Olin's inquiring "Where are the Yorkers".
It is said by members of the family that he joined the
Revolutionary forces and was aid to Gen. Warren.2 SOUR S203

NEW YORK GRANTEES APPEAL 203... Hampshire claim of jurisdiction, although it did conflictwith the Bennington grant. Under these circumstances, the Breakenridge claim of title was clearly invalid, and if,as James Duane said, the defendant's lawyers told him hehad no case, their advice was sound," nevertheless, Breakenridgewould make no admissions, and, as the plaintiff wascaught unprepared with necessary formal proof of his title, the former won a temporary victory by way of a nonsuit, only to have the case go against him at a later trial. Thefirst case to be tried, therefore, was that brought on behalfof the lessee of Captain John Small, a reduced officer inthe 4md Foot, against Isaiah Carpenter of Shaftsbury, whoclaimed title under Wentworth's patent of that township.Captain Small had obtained a military patent from NewYork, in October 1765, for three thousand acres under theKing's Proclamation of October 1763, and his land waslocated in Bennington and Shaftsbury." At the trial theplaintiff proved his title and offered evidence that his patentexpressly provided that two hundred acres should be reservedfor each settler under a New Hampshire title, uponcondition that he pay the usual New York fees, and thatCarpenter had been offered this amount of land but hadrefused to comply." Thereupon Carpenter offered as proofof his title a certified copy of the New Hampshire patentfor Shaftsbury and of Governor Wentworth's instructionsrelating (0 land grants, but the court excluded these documentsbecause no evidence had been offered to show that

Michael Slaughter to two thousandacres in Bennington, a military grant which had been acquiredby James Duane in 1765/~ and the Princetown proprietorsbrought suits against Jeremiah French, WilliamRoberts, Gideon Brownson, and Samuel Rose, who hadsettled on those lands under New Hampshire grants.40In these cases the plaintiffs claimed their titles under grantsjunior in date to those of the defendants, but in view ofthe ruling against Carpenter no defence was made and theplaintiffs won, and ultimately judgment was given againstBreakenridge also."In the light of the decision of the United States SupremeCourt in the Vermont-New Hampshire boundary case, wenow know that proof of the authority of New Hampshireto make grants west of the Connecticut River could not befurnished by the defendants in these ejectment cases, becausesuch authority did not exist. In consequence it wouldappear that the judgments in these cases resulted from theactual state of the law and the facts, and were not attribas

Oops! In looking more carefully at the email thread, I see that you did receive this.
You might be interested to know, however, that Charles Sibre’s assertion that the 9 May 1764 [recte 1765] marriage of Nathaniel Carpenter and Elizabeth Carpenter occurred in Rehoboth is incorrect. The marriage was recorded at Cumberland, Rhode Island, which was the bride’s home and almost certainly the location of their marriage (see Vital record of Rhode Island, 1636-1850 : a family register for the people, Vol. 3 - Viewer (Arnold, 22 vols., 3[Providence County]:5[Cumberland]:20 [image 240], online at FamilySearch.org).

Dear Gene,
In this long string of forwarded emails and responses is a digital copy of a document from 1764 Rehoboth. It is a marriage and child birth listing, most likely taken from a family bible.
Ownership belongs to Charles Edwin Sibre (csibre@yahoo.com) and is in regards to the marriage of Nathaniel Carpenter (1743-1826) and Elizabeth and their childrens' births.
I find this resource only in Amos Bugby Carpenter's memorial. Nonetheless, I thought you might like to see it.
Warm regards and a Happy Thanksgiving,

Subject: Carpenter Family Priceless Document
John,
I found your e-mail address on the Carpenter Family DNA website. I am Charles E Sibre, age 68, living in Annandale, VA. Genealogy is a hobby. My wife, Ellen, was adopted as a baby. Her adopting mother, Edith Burnham Russell, is a descendant of Elizabeth Carpenter (b.4/18/1786 Leyden, Franklin, MA - d. 09/10/1849 Craftsbury, Orleans, VT). Elizabeth was Edith's great, great grandmother. Elizabeth Carpenter is the daughter of Nathaniel Carpenter (1/13/1743 Rehoboth, Bristol, MA - dead 1786 or 1826) and Elizabeth Carpenter (maiden name) (1/13/1743 Rehoboth - died unknown Cumberland, RI).
Ellen has inherited a family scrapbook, assembled by her grandfather, that has an original, handwritten, linen-paper, sheet of the Nathaniel and Elizabeth Carpenter family - starting with their marriage 1765 through the birth of their 10th child Elizabeth in 1786.
I am searching for a Carpenter family association or group to whom I can send an image and transcription of this valuable document, but have not found one as I have for many of Edith's other old New England ancestors. Do you know of one? Of multiple ones who would be interested?

Subject: Contact from the Guild Website regarding your Carpenter studyIn my wife's family records is an ORIGINAL handwritten marriage and child birth record, that is 256 years old, that is on waxed linen paper starting at the marriage of Nathaniel Carpenter (b. 1/13/1743 in Rehoboth, son of David Carpenter and Johanna Walker) and Elizabeth Carpenter (b. 12/20/1746 Rehoboth, dau of Jotham Carpenter Jr and Mehitable Thompson). It records from their marriage on 5/9/1764 in Rehoboth to the birth of their 10th child Elizabeth Carpenter b. /18/1786, plus some later family additions showing the descent line down to Amanda Root Graves and Albert Mattoon Graves. The ORIGINAL is in a family scrapbook assembled by Kenneth H Graves Russell, the father of my wife's mother. This seems to us to be a very valuable document and we will be happy to share an image of it, and a transcription of its contents (though I can't find that right now). Subject: Hicks family
Hi,
I am also a Hicks family member.
I'm not sure if my ancestors are related to you or not, but:
I have a Hezekiah Hicks (b. about 1715). I don't know his birth place.
His father was James Hicks (b. about 1693, Swansea, MA, d. 1729/30, Rehoboth, Bristol, MA. He married Mary Wells, 10/22/1713 in Rehoboth, Bristol, MA.
Hezekiah had a brother, James and sisters Mary, Freelove and Lois.
I have nothing further on Hezekiah's part of the family.
Let me know if any of this helps.
Roy
The birth of Thomas Bowen is found on page 160 of the Vital Records of Swansea,
MA His marriage is recorded on page216 of the Uxbridge, MA Vital Records
although whoever recorded it did not know how to spell Penelope's name. This
is evident since she was named for her grandmother Penelope Pray and in other
records of the family of Thomas and Penelope, her name is spelled correctly.
The first two children of Thomas and Penelope were born at Warren, RI and are
listed on page 49 of the Vital Records. All of the others were born at
Richmond, NH and are listed in the History of Richmond, NH along with many of
the decendants.
John Bowen contributed a copy of The Genealogy of Thomas Bowen by Alice Bowen
Cady & Jennie Bowen Julian.BOOK STYLE REPORT - First 4 generations. The rest is continued in his
daughter Sarah's notes.

Buried in Maplewood Cem. Springville,NY
The lineage of Alfred's mother Emeline Weast is found in the Weast Family
Genealogy, and also the Botsford Family History. The Botsford Family History
goes down to the birth of Alfred's two daughters Violet and Virginia. Alfred
is found on the 1900 cnensus at Alengany, NY living with an older cousin,
Daniel Fuller. In 1910 is is found in Hamburg, Erie Co, NY with Luella and
Violet. Virginia was born after the census was taken that year/ The dates
of death for Alfred, his parents, grandparents as well as his two young sons
are recorded in the East otto, Ny Vital Records. His sister and and two
brothers are also listed there and all are buried at Maplewood Cemetary in
Springville, NY.
Alfred was working for the railroad at the time Virginia was born. At the time
of his death, he was an engineer.
MARR DATE 17 Jun 1907 # 12256
Alfred married (1) Luella M. BOWEN in Springville, NY. Luella was born 1 Aug
1889 in East Otto, NY NY Birth # 28. She died in Omaha, NE.
BIRT PLAC East Otto,NY NY Birth # 28572
DEAT DATE 17 Apr 1932 # C3832
DEAT CAUS cancer
Luella Bowen's marriage to Alfred broke up in 1912. It is suspected that
they were never actually divorced since it was nearly impossible to obtain a
divorce in New York. Sometime around 1915, she married Ralph Earl Loghry
at Morton's Corner's near Springville, NY. It is our belief that she did not
use her own name when they were married since after that time she began first
using the name Luella Bertha, and later used just Bertha. Also on a Photo of
her the name Bertha Flood is written as her maiden name. We went to NY and
learned that she had a neighbor named Bertha Flood that was four years younger
than she was and Bertha died in 1913 of blood poisoning. Because of that we
feel she may have used Bertha's name when she married Ralph Loghry. It is also
possible she used Bertha's first name with the last name of Bowen. At this
point we have been unable to find the marriage record of Luella and Ralph.
When Luella died, she was buried under the name of Bertha Loghry. Ralph was in
prison at the time and she had cancer so it is very likely she was recieving
some type of county assistance. If that is the case, she would have had to
produce a marriage certificate and if the marriage record listed her name as
Bertha, that is the name she would have had to use. This is the only
explanation we can find as to the reason she is buried under the name of Bertha
instead of Luella. I feel this information is necessary in order that others
who may want to find Luella M. (Bowen) Bowen, Loghry will not find
themselves at a dead end.
Alfred and Luella had the following children:+

My mother always insisted she was named Katherine Rose Bowen but because an
aunt requested it, she was nicknamed Violet. The name Violet stuck and it was
the only name she was ever known by, even though she hated the name.
Unfortunately, her first name was not recorded on her birth certificate so
there is no way of proving what it actually was. Since she was always known
as Violet, I have used that name in the family history.
Violet and Lester were married Oct 25, 1927 at Ashford Ny (marriage Record #
30490) In February of 1929. Violet caught Lester with another woman and left
him. She was three and a half months into the pregnacy of their child,. She
went to Nebraska to stay with her mother and step-father. Lester showed no
interest in the child at that time or after her birth. Violet met and later
married the nephew of her step-father, and he gave the child his name and
raised her as his own.
Because Jaunita was the biological child of Lester J. Ahrens, I have listed her
under this marriage. However since her step-father raised her and gave her his
surname, she is also listed under the second marriage of her mother and the
records of her marriages and the birth of her son are found there.
