OBITUARY
Richard Michael Carpenter
JULY 26, 1963 – JULY 7, 2022
Obituary of Richard Michael Carpenter
IN THE CARE OF
Palm Southwest Mortuary
In Loving Memory
Richard Michael Carpenter, 58, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, July 7, 2022 at his home in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Richard was born July 26, 1963 in San Mateo, California to Richard Earl and Mary Elizabeth Carpenter, the youngest of five children. Shortly after his birth, the family moved to Encino, California where he grew up and graduated from Crespi Carmelite High School. He then attended the University of California, Santa Barbara, graduating with a degree in Political Science.

After college, he moved to Washington D.C. The series of jobs he held in the capital were of great significance to Richard for the remainder of his life.

He worked at the National Air and Space Museum, where he was surrounded by his passions for American history and aviation. He then managed a video store, where he met Kathalene “Kathy” Yardley, who would become his beloved wife of 32 years. Finally, he worked in the Department of Education, where he was able to contribute to the political system he cared for so deeply, during the Reagan Administration he so respected.

He and Kathy then moved back to California, where they were married on November 4, 1989, in the same Catholic Church (St. Cyril of Jerusalem) that he attended as a boy. Together they raised their only child, Richard “Ricky” John Carpenter. In 2001, the family moved to Las Vegas, Nevada, where he discovered his enduring love for the desert and the history of the town.

Richard collected many hobbies throughout his life. From his father, he inherited passions for camping, model making, American history, family history, astronomy, film, and more; he would later share these interests with his own son.

He was also an impressive car enthusiast. From the moment he could drive, he was obsessed with the open road, spending countless hours working in the garage, racing with friends, and driving across the country. After returning to California from Washington D.C., his career would revolve entirely around automobiles.

His love of cars was matched only by his fondness for firearms. After moving to Las Vegas, he spent much of his free time researching, building, and shooting guns in his beloved Mojave Desert.

Richard was an obsessive man whose curiosities grew by the day, and he loved nothing more than sharing them with others.

Later in life, he would battle the effects of Multiple Sclerosis, which affected his ability to enjoy many of his hobbies, but he fought as hard as he could to enjoy things the way he wanted to enjoy them.

Richard was a proud man, proud of his family and his countless interests, and it is through these things that he will be remembered and loved.

He is survived by his wife Kathy; his son Ricky (Olivia); his grandchildren Jude and Lucille; and his siblings Patsy (Jack), Chris (Amy), Susie, and Barbie (Jerry). He is preceded in death by his parents; and his in-laws, Jack and Ivadell Yardley.

If you would like to send flowers for the burial please do so through Magleby Mortuary at the following link, https://www.maglebymortuary.com/obituary/Richard-Carpenter. Or, in lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society using the following link, https://mssociety.donordrive.com/campaign/Richard-M--Carpenter-Memorial-Fund.

45118. Douglas Harry "Sparks" Carpenter

NOTE:
This descendant line submitted in February 2024 by Justin Carpenter - justinmcarpenter@gmail.com

COMMENT: From Justin - a grandson
My grandfather was indeed a ship's radio man during WWII (I'd heard "a liberty ship," but no details -- I'm still researching this), and from it, my father inherited a love of HAM, which led me into telecommunications as an early career path. I never knew my grandfather's call sign, but I know he was a HAM, too.
Doug was a radio operator, then an electrical engineer, then retired. His father William A was a button manufacturer, and his father William S, a railway engineer. George P, of course, was famously a jockey and horse trainer, and is alleged to be the gent depicted in Currier & Ives' portrait of Thomas Jefferson (again, the horse, not the president)'s record-setting portrait.

COMMENT:  Per Justin Carpenter
. I actually know fairly little about Doug, and everything I know about him....is honestly kind of awful. I'll share it, but be warned, it's....not a happy story.

Doug was a grifter. As a little kid, he was the charismatic "fun" uncle who called, always moving around and living on the go and full of stories about fishing and hunting and traveling...but when you're eight, you don't really think about how he managed that life. He had a habit of suddenly not being able to visit or pass through certain states -- he never came to New York, citing "I don't go there" -- and we could never call *him*, he always called *us*. He'd give us a number, yes, but four months later it'd be disconnected, or the new owner wouldn't know where he was.

I spoke to him exactly once, between 1992 and his death. He was apparently in touch with Dad, and when Dad's phone was canceled after he died, made a welfare check call to the Folsom police. They contacted me, as Dad's next of kin, and asked me to call Doug and break the news. I did, the person on the other end (a lady) chewed me out, insisting Doug didn't live there...until I mentioned I was his nephew, and this was in response to his welfare call about Dad. SIlence, then a very sick-sounding Doug came on the line, we exchanged sympathies. He told me that he was in hiding with $125K in medical debt, asked me to pay it off for him (sure Doug, I think I've got that under the couch cushions to spare, hang on...), asked me to cosign a loan for him (Doug, just no), asked me to go in "halves" with him on a business plan to create rather racist bobbleheads mocking the at-the-time president (Doug, are you serious!?), and we parted ways, myself rather bewildered by it all.

I wasn't notified when he died, and never heard from him after that. The number he'd given me went dead about five months later, and I knew "Idaho" but nothing else. I found out about his death online, fairly recently. I suspect the obituary was published in New Haven because it was the most likely place to find anyone who knew him.

I was not approached, at all, or even notified....possibly because Doug was a loner, in hiding, at the end of a long life of grifting, burning bridges and violating trust. I imagine the state handled his post-death affairs, and no next of kin could be identified. I'd heard he'd married in his past -- hence why I thought that record might have been his wife -- but "married" with Doug could have simply meant "lived together for a while" or "ran a grift together." He had a romantic partner named Gladys, who was not his wife but his longterm partner for many years, whom I knew as "Aunt Gladys," but she'd left sometime prior to our last conversation. When I asked if I could say hello to Aunt Gladys, in our last phone call, he said "She's gone, Justin" -- but I have no idea whether he meant "deceased" or "left him" or "not in the room right now." He would not tell me the name of the woman I spoke to, that day.

But then, I see that Gladys Lanett Carpenter still lives in Shoshone, and shows as living at past addresses I knew him to have used, and her last name alleges to be "Carpenter," so...honestly? I don't know. I'm putting together these stories from an outsider's perspective, even though I lived through some of 'em. I do apologize for how dark this is, but Doug was...a messed-up guy. I suspect he left an estate deeply in the red, with no appreciable material assets, that was handled by the authorities, and as I wasn't in his direct line, I wasn't contacted, as I'm not an heir. I have only educated guesses and fragments.

....and now I see that you've found records of Gladys! Yes...that's her, all right, but I never knew she and he *actually married*. I was told they hadn't! I...appreciate it. Many of the stories I've heard, I'm learning, weren't quite true. Thank you for answering a longtime family question of mine...and for prompting the research that tells me that Gladys almost definitely *was* the woman on the phone, that day. They appear to have been together to the end. She was definitely there, in Twin Falls and Shoshone...and she's allegedly still there, today.

John Joseph Carpenter born June 11, 1943 to Herbert and Hazel Carpenter in Boston, Mass., passed away peacefully after a long battle with Interstitial Lung Disease in his Poway, CA home on Thursday, September 24, 2020.
John was the middle child of five children: Herb, Bobby, Betty (deceased) and Gary (deceased). He is survived by his beautiful wife of 48 years, Ruth Carpenter, his adored daughters, Danetta Carpenter, Michelle Peckham, Tina Bozarth, Debi Carpenter-Braunstein and Carrie Carpenter, and by his incredible eleven grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren.
John is remembered by those who knew and loved him as Chief, family man, gardener, seafood aficionado, an avid bowler with a wicked curve, accomplished traveler, the great debater, and as a man who loved to be right.
John loved and appreciated the women in his life. This appreciation started with his mom, who he adored. His mom, Hazel, gave him his dance moves, good looks, great sense of humor, and family values.
John married the love of his life (his “main squeeze”) Ruth Christine Carpenter, a 48 year love story, filled with remarkable adventures, marvelous mishaps and loads of laughter.
John enjoyed teaching his girls to fish and not actually catch anything; to hunt rats and gophers that were demolishing his garden; create wild chemical concoctions to kill bugs in the backyard; to spit wrappers through straws at each other (Mom still enjoys that to this day); to find a way through any obstacle; to always be thankful and love each other. He took great pride in making sure his girls studied hard and learned a lot, how to hold their own during entertaining political debates with him, and to be the best that they can be.
John enjoyed many things, caring for his hummingbirds, growing tomatoes, lemons and oranges; wood-working; being Chief Carpenter; leaning back in his kitchen chair while eating dinner to watch the news playing in the other room; inviting missionaries into the house to debate religion; they even came to the door asking for Mr. Carpenter, but what he relished the most was being the best husband and Dad he could be.
John had an accomplished 32 year career as Chief of Police at San Diego State University, it included graduating from the FBI National Academy, 98th Assembly, being President of IACLEA and a Criminal Justice Professor. John was passionate about politics and public safety standards at state and around the world.
Above all, John was a man of honor and integrity. He touched the lives of people around the world with his big heart; he valued many things in life, but most notably was his family.
John left a piece of himself in everyone he knew; we will all miss him greatly.
The next time you look in the sky and see a cloud, he said he would be sitting on the edge toasting us with a glass of wine. Cheers!
His celebration of life was held in Poway on Friday, October 16, 2020.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you please make a donation to the American Lung Association.
