Page 74 - Carpenters
Two brothers, Nathaniel and Willard Carpenter, came from Woodstock, Conn., in 1802 or 1803. Nathaniel lived at West Woodstock. lie was the second landlord in the tavern on the hill and was, at one time, the sawyer in Jacob Post's mill. He was, also, a blacksmith and carpenter. He married Lucy, sister of Salmon Gage.
They had ten children, Elisha, Luther, Gilbert, Otis, Major, Lucy, Emmeline, Silura, Anna, and Nancy. Mr. Carpenter and most of his family finally settled in Pompey.
Silura was the third child, and the only one born in Woodstock. The snow was so deep on her birthday, May 5, 1807, that the roads had to be ploughed. She married for her first husband Curtis Griffith, and had three children. The son died in infancy.
Her second husband was Harvey Allen. She survived him many years, living with her daughter, Acta until 1898 when she died at the age of ninety-one. She perfectly understood the almost lost art of carding, spinning and weaving.
When Cleveland was president, Mrs. Cleveland owned a black dog that was at one time in Cazenovia. While there it was sheared, and Mrs. Allen took sonic of the hair, carded and spun it, and knit a pair of gloves which she sent to Mr. Cleveland. She received a personal reply. and a present of five dollars from him.
Her daughter, Acta Griffeth, married the late Thomas Eastman, who worked for John C. Loomis in the tannery at Floodport, and afterward for the Warlock brothers.
They have been residents of New Woodstock more than fifty years. Their four children are Delana, Maun Barrett, Elisha, who married Eva Hubbard and and lives in Binghamton, Dwight M., of Rome, and Sarah Clancy of Cortland.
Capt. Willard Carpenter, called captain because he was commander of a state militia company, was born in 1780. His first wife was Hannah Keeney. They had twelve children; Ezekiel, David D., Amanda [Ainsworth,] Sarah (Cole Thomas,) Mary (Ainsworth,) Lucy, who died. Hiram, who married a Couable, is eighty-two years old and lives in Webster City, Iowa; Celestia [Post.) mother of Charles, Marbia (Pratt,) Ella (Thompson) and William; Fannie, Erastus, living in Iowa; Julia, and Ardelia (Sholes,) who lives in Hampton, Iowa.
Ezekiel was married three times and lived at West Woodstock in the old tavern on the hill. He kept a grocery on the southwest corner of the mad, and in his later years in the basement of the old tavern.
He made matches in square blocks, using a knife to make the divisions between the matches.
His first wife, the mother of eight children, was Sarah Marie Davis.
The children were Lyman, Calvin, Albert, John, Adelbert, James Ada, (McKevitt) and Cornelia (Worlock.) The youngest child, James, was killed at the battle of Bull Run.
Willard Carpenter lived about thirty years on the hill farm now in the possession of Deloss Burdick. About 1854 he moved on the Jedediah Morse farm where Isaac Morse first lived. Mr. Carpenter died there in 1850. His second wife was Thedy Dewey Cole, a sister of his first wife and a widow with one son, Elijah Cole, who married his cousin Sarah. Their daughter Amanda married William Estes. Both died several rears ago. Their children were Nellie (Poyle) of Morrisville, the twins Frank and Fred of Ilion, who is a carriage manufacturer, and George of Norwich.

MILITARY:  War of 1812
Per John David Carpenter and his wife Kristina "Tina" (she handles the genealogy) an aunt did research many years ago on Nathaniel.  They report ...
Nathnaniel Carpenter served as an enlisted private in the New York Militia (129th Regiment). He enlisted at Cazenovia, Madison County, NY. He was enlisted in Col. Elisha Farnham's Company (Regiment) in the War of 1812.  He served under Captain James Manger, Colonel Ballou. Nathaniel served from 9 Sept to 13 Nov 1814 for 66 days at Sackett's Harbor.
According to National Archieves pension records, his second wife, Widow Sally Adams, received $8.00 a month widows' pension beginning on 8 Mar 1878. Witnesses on the application for pension were Luoisa Allen (Sally's daughter) her husband Orrid D. Allen, Reuben Edgarton Justice of the Peace who knew her for 20 years. Darius Tabor (or Taber) who swore Nathaniel's death was from natural causes, Henry S. Carpenter (unknown relationship) and Major Carpenter, Nathaniel's son.

Subject: RE: Carpenter family photos
The only records I have come from an old hand written journal that was passed down from generation to generation.  Benjamin Carpenter is the first Carpenter I have mention of.  The record also mentions William Carpenter, born 1605, died at Rehobeth Mass on Feb 7, 1659. the Abigail, Samuel (b. 1644)married Patience Ide, Nathan b. 1700 married Mary?, Gideon b. 1725, then Benjamin, whom our family records start from. My record states that he was born in either 1765 or 1766, and died in 1846.  Mary Carpenter b. 7/24/1794/d. 12/18/1871 is where the Carpenter family name comes into our family.  She married Artemis Smith(b. July 12, 1972, d. October 14, 1839.  Both are buried in the Greendale Cemetery at meadville, Pa.  Their daughter, Henrietta Carpenter Smith, was my g g grandmother, was born May 27, 1822, died February 18,1907.  Please look your records over and see if these forebears of mine are in your database.  Thanks for your help.  Sincerely,  Roy A. John, Glad to hear from you. I have been reading the Carpenter messages hoping for a connect with proof. A little back ground on my Carpenters and Smiths. A family member back in the late 40's and early 50's put together a small book on the Miller Family. My 5th grt-grandfater was German, Johann Mueller, after his German Wife died (issue??), he married a Martha Farrington (can not find) and changed his name to John Miller. His son John G. I thought they were born and raised there. But they were born in Ma. and intended to marry there, but did not. I found them in Andover, Ashtabula Co., Ohio where they did marry.

This may not be alot of proof yet, but it is quite alot more that I had a year ago. The Miller that wrote the book never married, so I assume he left his notes, etc with one of his brothers. I sent them a request to see his notes, so I could bring the book up to date, They never answered my letters, even though I had put in a stamped envelope for their use. Alot of people just doesn't care to answer or they may have dumped all his notes etc. It has been 50 years since he wrote it.
I understand that there is a C-D with Carpenter Family History for sale. If so, how much and can I get one? Would like to hear what you think of what I have so far.
