Welcome L. Carpenter, 87, passed away at his home, Kenttown (RD 4, Rome)
at 10 a.m. today. He had been ailing for some time and bedridden the past
week. He was born in Rome on Feb. 22. 1868, son of the David and Lavina
Lawrence Carpenter, and had always lived in the Town of Rome. On April 1,
1888, in Stittville he married Alida Chesebro who died June 23, 1920. For
26 years after his marriage, he was employed by the Rome Brass and Copper
Co., after which he worked at the carpentry trade. For the later years of
his life, he operated the small farm on which he lived. He is survived by
the following sons and daughters: Mrs. Fred Eychner, Oriskany Falls;
Archibald Carpenter, Sherril; Welcome Howard Carpenter, Marcy; Mrs. Vern
S. Pomeroy, Brandenton, Fla.; Mrs. Ervin Eychner, Augusta Center, and
Bird Ralph Carpenter, Milton John Carpenter and Mrs. Raymond Myers, all
of Rome. There are several grandchildren and great-grandchildren and one
great-great-grandchild. Mr. Carpenter was the last of a family of three
children.
Mr. Carpenter was of the Methodist faith and a member of Rome Lodge,
IOOF. Funeral services will be held at the Waldo Wiggins Prince Home for
Funerals on Monday 2 o'clock with the Rev. Alvin C. Goddard, D.D.,
officiating. Interment will be made in the Wright Settlement Cem..

Mrs. Welcome Carpenter
Alida Chesebro, wife of Welcome Carpenter, passed away at her home on the
Floyd road at 11:50 a.m. on Wednesday after an illness of nearly two
years, during which she was a patient sufferer. She was born at Oriskany
Falls 46 years ago but the greater part of her life was spent in the town
of Rome. At Stittville 30 years ago she was married to Welcome Carpenter
and about five years later they purchased the home where she died.
Surviving besides her husband are eight children: Mrs. Fred Eychner of
Vernon Center, Archie Carpenter of the river road, Howard of Sherrill,
Bird, Geraldine, Zada, Milton and Kathryn, all at home, also her aged
mother, Mrs. Emma Lewis, and a brother, Phineas Chesebro of Los Angeles,
Cal., one sister, Mrs. Burt Danford of Remson, and two grandchildren.
Mrs. Carpenter was greatly beloved by her children and the many friends
which she had in the vicinity of her home, all of whom sincerely regret

Milton J. Carpenter Sr.
Milton "Carp" J. Carpenter Sr., 77 of 500 N. Washington St., who was
employed at Revere Copper and Brass Comany, until retiring in 1973, died
Sunday, May 1, 1988, in Rome Hospital where he was admitted on Saturday.
Born in Floyd, on May 13, 1910, he was a son of Welcome L. and Alidia
Cheeesboro (Note: Alida Chesebro) Carpenter. He married Phyllis Falcone,
on May 7, 1929, in Rome. An Episcopalian, he was a member of the
Mechanics Educational Society of America. Surviving besides his wife are
three sons: Robert M. Carpenter Sr., Rome; James R. Carpenter, Blossvale;
and Milton J. Carpenter Jr., Houston, Texas; five daughters: Mrs. Joseph
(Jennie) Ross, Houston, Texas; Mrs. Michael (Elnora) Maugeri and Mrs.
Elbert (Frances) Spangler, both of Miami, Fla.; Mrs. Mary Sjoblom, Rome;
and Mrs. Billy (Nancy) Hopkins, Hanahan, S.C.; two sisters, Mrs.
Geraldine Pomeroy, Bradenton, Fla. and Mrs. Irving (Catherine) Eychner,
Oriskany Falls; 41 grandchildren; and 32 great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 1p.m. Wednesday at the Barry Funeral Home. Burial
will be in Rathburnville Cem.. Calling hours are from 7 to 9 tonight
and from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday.

Mrs. Phyllis F. Carpenter, 82 of 136 Ringdahl Court, a Marcy Psychiatric
Center retiree, died Sunday Aug. 13, 1989, at home after a long illness.
Born in Buffalo on Aug. 11, 1907, she was the daughter of Giovanni and
Giovanna Salvaggio Falcone. She was married to Milton J. Carpenter Sr.,
in Rome on May 7, 1929. He died May 1, 1988.
Mrs. Carpenter was retired from the food service department of the Marcy
Psychatric Center. She was also employed at Rever Rome Manufacturing and
J. F. Pepper Tackle Company. She was a member of St. John the Baptist
Church and the Rome Moose Club.
Surviving are three sons: Robert M. Carpenter Sr., Rome; James R.
Carpenter, Blossvale; and Milton J. Carpenter Jr., Houston, Texas; five
daughters: Mrs. Joseph (Jennie) Ross, Houston, Texas; Mrs. Michael
(Elnora) Maugeri Miami, Fla.; Ms. Mary (Dolly) Sjoblom, Rome; and Mrs.
Billy (Nancy) Hopkins, Hanahan, S.C. and Mrs. Elbert (Frances) Spangler,
Columbus, Ohio; three brothers, Patsy Falcone, Utica; and Lucas Falcone
and Nazie Falcone, both of Rome; three sisters, Mrs. Lena Scuderi, Rome;
Mrs. Catherine Prestipino, Albany; and Mrs. Josephine Burdick, San Diego,
Calif.; 41 grandchildren and 36 great-grandchildren. Services are at 8:15
a.m. Thursday at the Nicholas J. Bush Funeral Home, and 9 a.m. at St.
John the Baptist Church. Burial will be in St. John's Cem.. Calling
hours are from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Memorial contributions can be made
to Hospice Care, Inc., Utica.
