I went to the library earlier today and got the information on the source of
the information I sent you on
NATHANIEL CARPENTER and his descendents. The name "SYSTEMATIC HISTORY FUND"
"VITAL RECORDS OF DOUGLAS, MASSACHUSETTS, To the end of the year 1849."
Worcester, Massachusetts. Published by Franklin P. Rice, Trustee of the Fund.
1906. Pages 92-93, 19-20, and 170-171.
In a book "HISTORY OF THE TOWN OF DOUGLAS, MASSACHUSETTS," From the Earliest
Period to the Close of 1878 BY WM. A. Emerson. BOSTON:
Published by Frank W. Bird, OLD BOOK SHOP, 37 Cornhill, 32 Brattle Street and
Cornhill Steps. 1879. I found the following information.
"CARPENTER'S TANNERY" For many years there was a tannery at Centerville,
built by Edmund Carpenter, Jr., who carried on the
business several years. He was succeeded by his son Nathaniel, whose death
occurred but a few months afterwards, and the business was again taken by his
father, and continued by him until 1836 when the buildings were torn down.
"CARPENTER's SHOE FACTORY" The shoe business was carried on by Comfort
and Seba Carpenter at Centerville prior to 1837 when they commenced
the manufacture of sale work, continuing until 1854, employing about
sixty workmen. In 1856 the building was taken down, and the frame removed to
the Village of East Douglas, when it was remodeled into a dwelling-house.
There is also a note in the Biographical and Genealogical section that
states that a LOUIE M. DUDLEY, born 1814 was married to EDMUND CARPENTER in
1833, and died in 1835. That must have been after the death of his first wife,
NANCY SOUTHWORTH, and before his marriage to MARGARET ALDRICH. There is no
mention of this in the VITAL RECORDS OF DOUGLAS, and there is no grave with
the rest of the Carpenters in Douglas Center Cemetery. She may have been
buried in the Dudley lot since she was only married to him for two years.
MARGARET ALDRICH is not buried in the Carpenter lot either.
Barbara.
Abigail's grandfather was John Lee. By which son is the question.
