Stephen\6 Carpenter was born c1748 in Providence RI [ABC], died at age 57 in 1805 at Edenton, Chowan Co. Grove, Allegany County, NY became a town in 1827/1828.  Dexter Carpenter was one of the first highway commissioners.
Page 740
The town of Hume was organized on 20 March 1822 (see page 736). Gore became part of Hume.
Pioneering on the "Gore" documented about 1807 along the tortuous course of the stream. Dexter Carpenter from Vermont, came in 1819, taking part of lot 111, now owned by Frank Gillett.
Note: Dexter is likely Dexter Carpenter-14914 (b. abt 1793 MA? – d. 1838 Grove, Allegany, NY) while he was reportedly born in MA, his grandfather Peter Carpenter-7797 (1734 MA – d. abt 1818 VT) had taken the family to Windham, VT in 1795. Did this include Samuel Carpenter-15246 (b. 1760 MA – d. ? ?) the father of Dexter? If so, then Dexter may have started his family in Vermont before going to NY?
(Near bottom of the page) The first ground used for cemetery purposes was the "Carpenter burying ground." The first interment was that of Phebe Coon about 1834.
