John,
Thanks for the reply. My father did most of the work up until this
point and I'm playing catch-up, trying to independently verify his info.
My grandfather grew up on Powerline Rd just SW of Holley in the house
his father grew up in ("Carpenters' Corners"). My grandfather on up
to David (1818-1899) are at the Hillside Cemetery in Clarendon,
Orleans County, New York. It looks like David's father Solomon went
to Wisconsin, but we don't know what happened to Solomon after that.
http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~nyorlean/hllsdc.htm
I have a copy of Thomas G's will mentioning his wife Jane and
children Jonathan, Solomon, Sylvester, Robert, Deborah Knowles,
Susannah Foster, and Cornelia Sweet. Actually, I can only lay my hand
on a transcript at the moment, as I'm not sure where my father saw a
scan/copy of it. But it does mention giving land in Murray, Orleans
Co., NY to a Solomon.
http://stephentowngenealogy.com/research/willabstracts/
I have scans of other documents related to the will, such as notices
and an inventory list.
"I also give and bequeath to my son Solomon Carpenter and his
children, the use and occupancy of a lot of land number thirty two in
the town of Murray and in the county of Orleans and state of New
York. Said lot is bounded on the north by lot number thirty three, on
the east by lot number thirteen, and on the south by lot number
thirty one, and on the west by lot number fifty one containing one
hundred and four 16/100 acres of land."
"Landmarks of Orleans County, New York" by Isaac S. Signor also has
some pertinent info.
https://archive.org/details/landmarksoforlea00sign
p. 386/434 Solomon Carpenter, born in Rensselaer County, NY in
1787, came early to Murray, and took up land joining Holley on the
east. In 1823 he moved to Wisconsin, where he died in 1846. Of his
eight children only David is living.
p. 379/427 The land of Murray was owned jointly by the State of
Connecticut and the Pultney estate, and that belonging to the latter
was not surveyed and put into market until 1821. The Connecticut
lands were sold earlier. No records of articles or contracts with the
early settlers on the Hundred Thousand acre tract are accessible;
hence it is possible to give only a list of the first deeds. The lots
in the town north from the Ridge road, and one tier of lots south of
the same, are numbered from west to east and from north to south.
South from that road, except the one tier, they are numbered from
south to north and from east to west; and the same order in each case
is followed here regardless of chronological arrangement. These lots
were deeded as follows:
p. 381/429 L. 13, Thos. G. Carpenter, 51.27a., May 3, 1822;
Spencer C. Higgins, 51.27a.
L. 14, Thomas G. Carpenter, 97.49a. Feb. 22, 1825
L. 32, ______Carpenter, 104, 16a.
p. 383/431 L. 187, Joshua Garrison, 50.37a. Oct. 1, 1853; David
Carpenter, 50.37a. Oct. 1, 1853
L. 188, D. Carpenter, 20a. Nov. 1, 1855
I'm still looking for more info. My dad mentioned deeds showing the
transfer of the land in Holley down through to my grandfather, but I
don't see the scans in the folder he gave me. They are probably
somewhere in his office. He last worked on genealogy a couple of
years ago so he'll have to dig for them. This is part of one he transcribed:
"...in the town of Murray county of Orleans and state of New York and
being known and distinguished as lot number thirty two (32) in
township number three (3) in the one hundred acre or Connecticut
tract so called being the same farm formerly owned by Thomas G
Carpenter late of Stephentown Rensselaer county and state of New York
deceased in his lifetime and lately in the possession and occupation
of Solomon Carpenter of the town of Murray aforesaid son and heir at
law of the said Thomas G Carpenter the said David Carpenter and Jonah
Carpenter being sons of the said Solomon Carpenter and having
severally interest and estates in the premises above described by
virtue of the last will and testament of the said Thomas G Carpenter
deceased reference being made to said last will and testament and the
said David Carpenter having also an interest and estate in said
premises by virtue of a deed to him by and from the said Solomon
Carpenter bearing date the 12th day of March 1840 and recorded in
Orleans county clerks office in book of deeds number 18 on page 450
and the said George C Smith above named having an interest and estate
in said premises by virtue of a deed from Joel Carpenter bearing date
on the 13th day of March 1845 and also a deed from William Carpenter
and his wife dated on the 8th day of September 1845 the said Joel and
the said William being sons of the said Solomon Carpenter and having
respective interests..."
I know transcriptions aren't good enough. I'll keep digging.

3685. Samuel Carpenter

MARRIAGE: Samuel married an Arnold.  This seems to fit the data below.
Family updated based on information below.

E-MAIL: From: Margot
Date: 13 January
I'm researching my ancestors and am having a big problem finding the parents
of Arnold Carpenter, born about 1783 and died March 3, 1815 in Rensselaer
County, New York.  He married Harriette Ferris (about whom I have no
information) about 1810 in Stephentown, Rensselaer County, New York and is
the father of four girls:  Patty, Honor, Mary and Roxana.
I did find a couple named Samuel Carpenter (b. about 1760 in Kingston,
Washington County, RI) and Honor Arnold (August 28, 1760 - April 16, 1840)
but have no evidence of a link.  Are you familiar with this couple and do
you know who their children are?
Any help you can give me would be greatly appreciated.  Arnold Carpenter is
my 3G grandfather.
Thanks, Margot Davis Babler.

Subject: Carpenter cousins project

Hi John,
I just learned about this project and have joined/linked my mtDNA results to the surname project on Family Tree DNA. I’m a descendant of William of Rehoboth. I don’t have a GEDCOM but here is my descent:

William (England)
William  1605
Samuel 1644 m Sarah Readaway
Solomon 1677 m Elizabeth Tefft
Daniel 1712 m Renewed Smith
Jeremiah 1734 m Abigail Sheldon
Esther 1760 m Isaac Sheldon (oh dear, gene collapse!)
Gardner Sheldon m Nancy Gorum
Harriett Sheldon m Seymour Wells
Newton Wells m Emma Miller
Ella Wells m Walter Schneckenburger
Mary Ellen Schneckenburger m Edwin Peet
Ellen Peet (me) m Charles Walker

I’m not sure how much beyond the Carpenter surname you’ve an interest in, but I’m particularly interested in Esther. I don’t see her listed in your first names listing –  her 1760 birth date is certain - and wonder if you have her line.

From S. Kingston, Rhode Island, where she and Isaac lived until some time after the 1810 census,  they moved, first into Saratoga County, then Otsego county NY (where other related Carpenters and Sheldons may be found). Isaac died in Sherburne, Chenango, NY where his grave is located – but there is no trace of Esther.  The “Carpenters of Rehoboth” lineage document simply states that “they went west” (euphemism for New York, I guess!), and that’s where things end, information-wise.

Looking forward to hearing back from you!

Hannah Knowles

Jeremiah Carpenter (# 1938 in CM) married Hannah Knowles Carpenter circa 1783
and had children into 1805 and she died 28 Jan or 1 Feb 1829 at age 65.
The Solomon Carpenter (Number 1945 in the CM) who married Hannah
Knowles circa 1792 had children into 1810 and she died 6 July 1832.
This means they are not the same Hannah Knowles Carpenter.
Whether this Hannah Knowles Carpenter was a Carpenter by birth or marriage is
unknown. USING KNOWLES as surname.

The first mills in town were built by Mr. Atwell, and
stood on the south bank of the Wharton creek, a few rods
below the Arkwright factory dam, and in the place where
now stands the frame of a saw-mill ; were built about the
year 1793 or 1794, and consisted of a saw-mill , grist-mill ,
and oil- mill. Benjamin Hall and Luke Metcalf became
the owners after a few years, and continued so until 1816,
when the mills were destroyed by fire.
Asa Carpenter lost his life at these mills by going in
after dark to get a grist, and falling through on the rocks
under the mills . Gardner Carpenter performed a feat at
the bridge below the mills, which had but one bent line
sixty feet in length and twenty feet above the water.
Having spent the evening at New Berlin in song and story,
he started for home on his faithful horse, with a friend
seated behind him. As the night was dark, and time not
precious, the horse was permitted to go his way without
the usual guidance from the bridle- rein .
arrived at home he was met with astonishment, and asked
how he crossed the creek, which was at high flood . " Why,
on the bridge, of course, " he replied . He was told that
the flood had carried the bridge away, and that could not
be. The songs and stories of the evening were immediately
forgotten, and with lights, and a number of neighbors
aroused from their slumbers to visit the place and see how
it was, they arrived at the bridge, which the two were
positive they had crossed, and the neighbors were as positive
they had not, for the bridge had been carried off before
evening. As not unfrequently happens, both parties were
right, and both wrong. The bridge had gone off, with the
exception of the middle stringer, on which the ever- faithful
and trusty horse had carried the two friends over, as the
prints of the horseshoe on the stringer clearly proved.
In the early part of the present century, the same person,
Gardner Carpenter, was the keeper of a hotel in the house
now owned and occupied by John Northrup, long known
as the Randolph Hotel. Election was held at his house,
and it seems that some persons from Cooperstown, the
county-seat, had taken so lively an interest in the result,
and not being provided with the usual facilities of the
present day to exert their influence, had come on in person
in the early morning to insure the success of their ticket.
With an industry and perseverance that beavers need not
have been ashamed of, they had worked from early morn
until near the close of the day, when they confidently
counted upon a success that they and their friends at home
would feel proud of ; but, alas ! as the happy mariner with
fair skies and favorable winds sometimes meets with storms
on the eve of his arrival that destroy all his happy anticipations,
so did the worthy gentlemen from Cooperstown.
Before the sun's last rays were confined to the hill-tops,
two crotchets were driven down, a pole stretched across
under a kettle-bail, and under the kettle a fire started. It
was soon evident from the strong odor that passed through
the open window of the upper hall, in which the votes
were taken, that the contents of that kettle was tar.
Another glance would have discovered a rope dangling
over the sign-post, and a little closer inspection would have
discovered a goose's tail- feathers stretching out from under
a box that sat near by, but what evidently was not large
enough to cover up all the bird. We have only to add
that the above preparations had not been completed long
before some tall stepping was done from the back door of
the hotel, not exactly in a direct line to Cooperstown,
but nevertheless which ultimately resulted in the arrival of
the absent politicians without the canvass of the vote of
Pittsfield at the election.
