52202. Pearl S. Swartz

In 1946 Mrs. J. (Pearl) Lawder was of Lansing, Michigan, according to her father's obituary.  In 1961 Pearl was of Pensacola, FL according to her mother's obituary.  In February 1997 Elma Carpenter spoke with Pearl's sister, Ella Haven, age 97, of Battle Creek.  Ella furnished her sister's date of birth and children's names and their spouses.  Ella said her sister, Pearl, was deceased.

Copy of memorial received from Ella Swartz Haven, 3/98, sister of Pearl. March 29, 1982, Pensacola, Florida.  Pearl S. Lawder, 80, died Monday morning. Mrs. Lawder was a native of Eastport, Michigan, and had been a resident in Pensacola for the past 25 years.  She was a member of the First Christian Church . . .  She was the widow of the late Reverend J. Clyde Lawder. Survivors include four daughters - Wilma Weaver of Rockford, Michigan, Leona Morris of Panama City, Florida, Eulalie C. Mock and Elinor Clydine Pickard, both of Pensacola, Florida; three sisters, Ella Haven, Vera Harelston and Marian Eckler, all of Battle Creek, Michigan; one brother, Earl Swartz of Battle Creek, Michigan; two grandsons; and seven granddaughters; and one great-grandson. . . Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Thursday in the First Christian Church . . . Burial will be at Bayview Memorial Park. . . Active pallbearers will be Charles A. Mock, Charles Chandler Mock, Linson O. Pickard, Charles E. Morris, Dallas Rigby, John Eichelberger II, and John Cook. . .


J. Clyde Lawder

Copy of memorial received from Ella Swartz Haven, 3/98, sister-in-law of Clyde.  December 28, 1980, Pensacola, Florida.  The Rev. J. Clyde Lawder, 83, of 1020 Pickens Ave., died Sunday morning at West Florida Hospital.  Rev. Lawder, a native of Hillsdale, Kansas, had resided in Pensacola since 1957. Over a 45-year period he served as minister to six congregations.  He pastored two churches in Lansing, Michigan, and retired in 1965 from the First Christian Church of Pensacola.  He was named Minister Emeritus from the First Christian Church of Pensacola.  Survivors include his wife, Pearl Lawder of Pensacola; four daughters, Wilma Weaver of Rockford, Michigan, Leona Morris of Panama City, Florida, Eulalie C. Mock and Elinor Clydine Pickard of Pensacola; two grandsons and seven granddaughters.  Funeral services will be 2 p.m.Tuesday.  Burial will be at Bayview Memorial Park. . . 1920 U.S. Census, Calhoun, Athens Twp., MI, taken 6, 7 and 8 January, ED 35, p. 2A.  70/74 Swartz, Vera, daughter, age 14, is in the home of her parents, Ernest Swartz and Eula.

In 1946 Mrs. Carl Harleston was of East Leroy according to her father's obituary.  In 1961  Vera Harleston was of East Leroy according to her mother's obituary.

Date and place of birth of Vera received February 1998 from Vera's sister, Ella Haven, age 97, of Battle Creek.

OBITUARY.  Battle Creek Enquirer and News, Friday, Sept. 7, 1984, p 2B.  Vera L. (Swartz) Harleston, 79, of 190 Eldred St., died Thursday in Leila Hospital. She had been ill since July.  She was born in Athens and resided in the Athens, East Leroy and Battle Creek areas all her life.  She was a member of Sonoma United Methodist Church and a birthday club in the church.  Her husband, Carl W. Harleston, died in 1967.  She is survived by a son, Roy J. Harleston of 3625 Strickland Road; two grandchildren; one great-grandchild; a brother, Earl Swartz of East Leroy; and sisters, Ella Haven and Marian Eckler, both of Battle Creek.  Services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday in Sonoma United Methodist Church.  Memorial donations may be made to the parsonage building fund at the church.  Arrangements are by Richard A. Henry Funeral Home.

1920 U.S. Census, Calhoun, Athens Twp., MI, taken 6, 7, 8 January, ED 35, p  2A.  70/74 Swartz, Marion, daughter, age 11, b. MI, is in the home of her parents, Ernest Swartz and Eula.

In 1946 Mrs. Clarence (Marion) Eckler was of Battle Creek according to her father's obituary.  In 1961 Marion was of 184 Lathrop Avenue, Battle Creek according to her mother's obituary. Marion M. was alive in 1995 at the time of her husband's death.

Marion's date and place of birth received February 1998 from Marion's sister, Ella Haven, age 97, of Battle Creek.  Ella said Marion is in a nursing home.


Clarence L. Eckler

OBITUARY.  Battle Creek Enquirer and News, 20 Jun 1995, p 2A.  Clarence L. Eckler, 91, of Battle Creek died Saturday, June 17, 1995, in Evergreen Manor after a long illness. Born May 13, 1904 in Battle Creek to Fred and Alta (Hicks) Eckler, he was a lifelong resident of the Battle Creek and East Leroy areas.  Mr. Eckler was employed for 20 years at Oliver Corporation.  He also was employed at Kimball Nursing Home.  He attended the Sonoma United Methodist Church.  He enjoyed reading and was an avid Detroit Tigers baseball fan.  He married Marion M. Swartz on Aug. 29, 1927 in South Bend, Ind.  She survives. Also surviving are sons, Delmer C. Eckler of Houston and Donald K. Eckler of Battle Creek; daughters, Gloria A. Burrows of Delton, Lois D. Stock of Reno, Nev., and Darlene J. Nimphie of Lambertville; 12 grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by three brothers and one sister.  Services will be held later in Burr Oak Cem., Athens.  Arrangements by Richard A. Henry Funeral Home.

Marion Louise Hamilton

In a visit to Morgan Cem. on Southwest Capital Avenue, Battle Creek, there is a marker with the name of Swartz.  Marion L. 1918 - 1989.  Earl L. 1914.

OBITUARY.  Battle Creek Enquirer and News, Wednesday, June 14, 1989, p4A. East Leroy - Marion L. (Hamilton) Swartz, 70, of 10110 4-Mile Road, died Tuesday, June 13, at home.  She had been ill since December.  She was born in Battle Creek and was a 1936 graduate of Battle Creek Central High School.  She was a 1938 graduate of the old County Normal School, Marshall.  She taught in rural schools in Eaton Rapids and substitute taught in what is now the Harper Creek School District.  She was a member of Sonoma United Methodist Church for over 40 years and taught Sunday School there over 35 years.  She was a member of the Wrong Way Tha Square Dance Club and Cheerful Camper Club.  Surviving are her husband of nearly 50 years, Earl L. Swartz; a son, Elton E. Swartz of Battle Creek; a daughter, Phyllis Lutz of Battle Creek; three grandchildren; sisters, Donna Keisiling of Ceresco and Frances Smith of Battle Creek; and a brother, Dale Hamilton of Lake Orion.  Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Shaw-Estes Funeral Home.  Memorial donations may go to Sonoma United Methodist Church or Good Samaritan Hospice Care.  Burial in Morgan Cem., Battle Creek.

52207. Joyce Williams

Joyce Williams moved to Alberta, Canada, in May 1920 with her parents according to The Athens Times, Athens, MI.

Elma Carpenter had a conversation in February 1998 with Joyce's cousin, Ella Haven, age 97, of Battle Creek.  She gave us the names of Joyce's spouses and children.  Ella also gave us Joyce's date of birth.

1920 U.S. Census, Allegan County, Allegan City, MI taken 7 January.  Park Drive. 167/180 Ealy, Lewis, son, age 15, is in the home of his parents.

In June 1929 Lewis' mother was of Traverse City, MI, according to an Athens Times news article.

1920 U.S. Census, Allegan County, Allegan City, MI taken 7 January. Park Drive.  167/180  Ealy, Floyd, son, age 12, is in the home of his parents.

The Athens Times, Thursday, June 12, 1924.  Floyd Ealy of Allegan is spending the summer with his uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Wilson, and working in the garage.  In June 1929 Floyd's mother was of Traverse City, MI, according to an article in the Athens Times.


52211. John R. Wilson

The Athens Times.  Wednesday, May 21, 1947.  John R. Wilson who runs the bump department at the Wilson Garage has finished what appears to be an impossible job on a badly wrecked Oldsmobile . . .

The Athens Times.  Wednesday, May 31, 1950.  John R. Wilson and wife and Mr. and Mrs. Franklin Smith of Battle Creek attended a reunion of  1, 691st Calvary, Sunday in Chicago.  This was Mr. Wilson's outfit while stationed in Texas.

The Athens Times.  Wednesday, October 11, 1950.  Mr. and Mrs. John R. Wilson announce that little Douglas Elliott Wilson, aged three months, has come to make his permanent residence with them.

OBITUARY.  Battle Creek Enquirer and News, Wednesday, August 17, 1955, p. 9. Athens - John R. Wilson, 36-year-old garage owner, shot himself with a German war souvenir pistol at 6 p.m. yesterday half an hour after returning from Allegan where he was arraigned on a charge of negligent homicide.  Coroner Ralph Callahan said that Mr. Wilson's death apparently was the result of despondency over the accident Sunday night on M-89 in Allegan County in which Mrs. Alice Thompson of Fenville died and her husband was critically injured.  The Wilson car rammed the Thompson car in the rear, according to Allegan Sheriff Walter Runkel, while the Wilsons were returning from Saugatuck.  Mr. Wilson had asked examination of the charge against him and was released on bond of $2,500.  Theexamination was to have been Monday.  Mr. Wilson's wife, Mildred, heard the shot while returning from a neighbor's house and found his body lying in the basement shot through the head.  He used a pistol brought back from his World War II service.  Mr. Wilson was born Feb. 9, 1919, at Holt, son of Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Wilson and graduated from Athens High School where he was prominent in athletics.  He is survived by his wife; his father, with whom he was in business; a son, Douglas, 6; two sisters, Mrs. Alice Brickman of Pontiac, IL, and Mrs. Rose Dean of Bay City; and an adopted brother, Theo Crain of Waurika, Okla.  He was a member of Athens Lodge No. 220, F&AM, was a Royal Arch Mason, belonged to the Loyal Order of Moose in Battle Creek and the Veterans of Foreign Wars here, and was a member of the village council.  The body was taken to the Spencer Funeral Home.  Funeral arrangements have not been made. Thursday, August 18, 1955.  Services will be Saturday, August 20, from Spencer Funeral Home.  Burial in Burr Oak Cem..  (This is the first reference we find of the sisters named in this obituary, Alice Brickman and Rose Dean.)

OBITUARY.  The Athens Times, Wednesday, August 24, 1955.  John R. Wilson, 38, passed away Tuesday, August 16, 1955.  Funeral services were held on Saturday at 2 p.m.  Rev. Wm. E. Potts of the First Congregational Church officiated. Burial was in Burr Oak Cem..  John was born Feb. 9, 1917, at Holt, son of Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Wilson.  Graduated from Athens High School.  He was active in athletics; also a member of Athens Lodge No. 220, F&AM; a Royal Arch Mason; Loyal Order of Moose in Battle Creek; a member of the V.F.W. Post of Athens, and was a member of the Village Council.  He is survived by his wife, Mildred, and one son, Douglas 5; his parents; two sisters, Mrs. Alice Brinkman of Pontiac, Ill. and Miss Rose Dean of Bay City; one brother, Theo Crain of Wauriko, Okla.  (Who are these sisters and brother surviving? The obituary above said that Theo Crain was an adopted brother.)

The Athens Times, Wednesday, July 30, 1952.  Mr. and Mrs. Harry Graichen and children of Ypsilanti (MI) spent the last two weekends with their aunt, Mrs. H. G. Lewis.  Mrs. Lewis also spent a portion of last week with the Graichens at South Haven where they were vacationing on Lake Michigan shores.
