MILITARY: General Carpenter's Brigade of Westchester County Militia was
attached to the First Division of Infantry, this division furnished a total
of 2,065 men.  370 soldiers were in Gen. Carpenter's Brigade.

DEATH: "He died at Harrisons in 1819" per the above
record, yet the next line indicates his will "was proved March 13, 1817."

During the Revolution he was quartermaster under General Thomas.  At the battle
of White Plains, in a skirmish near Harrisons, the British surrounded a house
which sheltered several Americans, including General Thomas and Lt. Thomas
Carpenter.  They were all taken prisioner except Lt. Carpenter, who was left
for dead.  But by careful nursing he finally recovered and for his bravery was
made captain and then general.  The British were led by a Col. Simcoe.

I have done a little more research. There is another Thomas besides the General.

4th regiment  lists Thomas and James as privates (New York in the Rev.) Westchester county page 214, page 266 lists the two under the Land Bounty rights - but this is in the 2nd regiment of Westchester County under General Thomas Carpenter. So they have switched regiments. How does one find those records?

There is only one James listed ( private under Crane and Truesdell) 4th regiment
There are three Thomas listed:
1 - Lieut. Under Thomas/ Thomas (Also states ** run through the body with a bayonet at Harrison's Purchase, November 8, 1778. Shoemaker, Harrisons, Westchester Co. C20, I 125 is this a book)
2. Private under Harper/Drake
3. Private under Crane/ Truesdell (4th Regiment)

On the 1790 Census, 1800, 1810, both James and Thomas. For Harrisons, Purchase Township, Westchester County. We know that my James is there.

Elijah Carpenter along with Colvill Carpenter are listed on (page 253) Orange Count Militia 1st regiment (New York in the Rev -  Land Bounty Rights)

I also read some things about a Thomas Carpenter in the Purchase Monthly meeting. The son of Joseph. (perhaps older brother to James, son of Benedict) but the Carpenter Book does not list a son named Thomas for Joseph Carpenter s. of Benedict. I need to investigate the dates to see what generation they are discussing. Could this be the Thomas we are looking for? They would be first cousins.

What do I know?
Both James and Thomas show up together in the 4th Reg. and also on all Census data in Westchester County NY, town of Harrison (1790, 1800, 1810) I am not sure who Thomas Carpenter is - but think he is one of James's older brother's sons. He is the only James that is showing up on the census data. They lived in this county and township all their lives. The DAR said that James was such a common name - how do I know this is mine. However they fully agreed with my documentation that James Carpenter, born in 1754 was my gg grandfather. Both James and Thomas are found in the book under pensions and Elijah is also listed both with the 1st regiment and with pensions.

Andrew was a soldier in Col. John Mead's regiment, Captain James Greene's
company.  Enlisted at Flushing, LI in the Revolutionary War and died at Fort
Washington of a fever contracted in the service.  His widow afterwards became
the wife of Stephen Fields.

DEATH:1778 per one record and 16 Nov 1776 per another.

I do not have much on the Wheeler line. According to the information in
my file Joshus Wheeler b. Abt 1763 had two brothers named Eliphalet and
Solomon. Joshua Married Nancy Carpenter abt 1770, the daughter of Stephen
and Amy (Field) Carpenter, (Stephen is a direct descendant of William
Carpenter the founder of Providence, RI. as follows Stephen, of Thomas,
of Joseph, of Joseph,of William). I have no record of children for them.
However, approximately a year later Nancy's sister Mary married Joushua's
brother Eliphalet and they had Eliphalet, Andrew, and three unnamed
female children.
My files on this family are in need of work so did not send gedcom, but
I'm sure you will hear from others in the group.

Hi John :  Thanks for responding.. Theda was born 27 Aug 1804 at Chatham Center NY , she & her husband Milton Main moved to Cattaraugus County , Portville, about 1823.   I don't have any info on her sister Keziah (Anna), except she taught at the first school in Portville.  Theda & MIlton had 10 children.  Theda died 14 Mar 1895.  Milton was born 6 Mar 1802, died 17 Feb 1878 . They are both buried at Main Settlement in East Portville, NY .  Thanks   Meralyn

His will was proved 21 Oct. 1843 per Westchester Records, Book Z, p.
440.

NOTE:
Stephen worked with his future wife while attending the wounded soldiers during
and after the Battle of White Plains.  Part of this battle was fought in a rye
field that belonged to his father, about 3 miles from home.
Stephen also help defend his house from the "skinners" and other marauding
bands that terrorized the countryside during those turbulant times.

The first North Castle Town Meeting was held on April 6, 1736.  The Town was incorporated on March 7, 1788 when the State of New York passed an act for dividing the counties of the state into towns:
"And that all that part of the said county of Westchester, bounded southerly by Mount Pleasant, the White Plains, the Town of Harrison and Connecticut, easterly by Connecticut, Pound Ridge and Before, northerly by the Manor of Cortland and Bedford, and westerly by Bronx River and Mount Pleasant, shall be and hereby is erected into a town by the name of North Castle."
North Castle was once much larger than it is today.  In 1791 it was divided in half and the upper portion was named New Castle.
