Thanks John,
Wondering what info might be contained on Ruth Carpenter, daughter of Caleb. Ruth was born in 1776 and married John Kipp. Would really be interested in info on her children if it lists them. Thanks.

ID: I1397
Name: Ruth Carpenter
Sex: F
Birth: 24 JAN 1776 in NY
Death: 21 MAY 1836 in Sparta,Yarmouth,Elgin Co.,Ont., Canada
Note:
Ruth Kipp was born January 24, 1776 in New York (also in Westchester
Co. probably near Chappaqua, NY). Her parents were Caleb Carpenter
and
Amey Carpenter. She died May 21, 1826 (Sparta, Ontario....same
observation as for John Kipp's records).
_____________

"The Quaker Settlement in Yarmouth Township, Elgin County, Ontario" byKaren-Lynn Stafford, 1987, University of Western Ontario, 156 p.
The author reports that at the Norwich Monthly Meeting held 14 Oct 1829proceedings of disownment were taken against several women of theYarmouth Preparatory Meeting (Yarmouth had gone to the Hicksites in the1828 split within the Quaker faith). Among the disowned were "Ruth Kipp, wife of John".
_____________

More about John and Ruth, founders of Sparta, Ont. Zipporah
subsequently remarried her cousin, Caleb Carpenter, in a second
marriage
for both, in a Quaker ceremony in Chappaqua, New York in 1796. Caleb
and Zipporah were Quakers; James Kipp's parents had been Quakers. In
addition, James had two brothers who, as Quakers, remained neutral
during the Revolution. It is not surprising then, that when James and
Zipporah's son, John, married Caleb's daughter, Ruth, that they
retained
their Quaker background. When John and Ruth moved to Canada, (probably
after Zipporah's death in 1818--which dovetails nicely with the
foundation of the Quaker community in 1819) they moved with other
Westchester Quakers to the Quaker community of Sparta, Ontario. Since
Canada was part of the New York Yearly Meeting of Quakers, the Kipps
did
not move outside the political sphere of their religious group. This
may have seemed more important to them than the fact that they were
emigrating to another country.

NOTE:
It appears to me that the DAR place the marker on George the son, when it should have been George the father's grave. But, no one knows where the father is buried.
Or the DAR back then, claimed that he was ... providing material support for the Revolution because George (1757-1859) once held the horse of General George Washington. That would be a hoot and a haller, to borrow an older phrase! JRC

Carpenter 1757-1859 was in the Rev, War, No pension papers, that I can find, his son Jacob reports in the Portrait and Biographical Record, Genesee, Lapeer, and Tuscola Counties, Chicago Chapman Bros 1892: " his father, George Carpenter, who lived to be one hundred and three years old, belonged to a Quaker family. He was a little boy at the time of the Revolutionary War, and loved to recount that he had the privilege of holding on to Gen. Washington's horse on one occasion. He was afflicted with a trouble of the eyes which made him nearly blind when he was twenty years of age...." this is a question for me. (If he had fought in the war I think it would be told here.) Also, the last census he is listed as 88 years old in 1850. I don't question the DAR records, they do! I am researching all local newspaper for information, so far nothing on a date of the grave maker. I am not in question of GC 1729-1811 only on GC 1757 - 1859 and only because I think it is important to be correct. I will keep in touch, Sincerely, Dawn
