Robert Ruliph Morgan "Ruly" Carpenter III (June 10, 1940 – September 13, 2021) was an American businessman and baseball executive. He was the principal owner and president of the Philadelphia Phillies from 1972 to 1981.
Early life
Carpenter was born in Wilmington, Delaware, on June 10, 1940.[1] He was the first of three children of Bob Carpenter and Mary Kaye Phelps.[2] He was three years old when his grandfather, R. R. M. Carpenter Sr., bought the Philadelphia Phillies in 1943 and appointed Bob as team president.[3] Carpenter attended Tower Hill School,[4] where he was a first-team All-State end.[5] He went on to study at Yale University, lettering in football and baseball there.[3]
Career
Carpenter joined his father in the Phillies' front office in 1963. Two years later, he suggested that his father hire Paul Owens, a young scout, as farm system director. Owens would eventually become general manager in 1972.[3]
Carpenter became team president at age 32, when his father stepped down during the 1972 season while remaining chairman of the board. He became the youngest team president in MLB.[3] His tenure as owner was, statistically speaking, one of the most successful in franchise history. From 1976 to 1980, the Phillies won the NL East in every season but one, including the team's first World Series win in 1980.[2][3] They also won the first half National League East title in the strike-shortened 1981 season.[6] Carpenter was opposed to female reporters being allowed into the team's locker rooms, but acquiesced to a court ruling in 1979 because he did not want to continue to fight what he regarded as a losing battle.[7]
Soon after the World Series triumph, however, Carpenter decided to sell the team. With the advent of free agency, salaries were already starting to spiral upward,[8] with the Phillies having the second-highest payroll in the MLB at the time.[9] He believed that even with his considerable wealth he needed to take on minority investors in order to stay afloat.[9] Unwilling to have to get permission from partners in order to make major decisions, he sold the Phillies to a group headed by longtime Phillies executive Bill Giles for $32.5 million in 1981.[3][8]
Carpenter resided in Wilmington. He was a longtime member of the University of Delaware Board of Trustees; his family has supported the school for many years.[5] He remained an avid Phillies fan, and closely followed the team's run to its second World Series championship in 2008.[10] He was inducted into the Delaware Sports Hall of Fame in 1987.[5]
Personal life
Carpenter was married to Stephanie (Conklin) Carpenter for 61 years until his death. Together, they had three children: Robert IV, David, and Cinda.[5]
Carpenter died on September 13, 2021, at his home in Montchanin, Delaware.[4][9][3][5]

R.R.M. Carpenter III: Portrait of 'the Consummate Volunteer'
RR.M. (Ruly) Carpenter III was 3 years old in November 1943,
when his grandfather bought the Philadelphia Phillies baseball
team. As a boy of 10, he recalls, "I knew all the players by
name, and I was always thrilled to see home games at Connie Mack
Stadium."
Ruly Carpenter was 32 when his father stepped down as team
president, leaving his son in charge. Eight years later, the
Phillies won the 1980 World Series Championship-the only such win
in the history of the franchise.
Carpenter sold the Phillies to William Giles in 1981, but
sports are still a big part of his life. Today, he channels much
of his enthusiasm for athletics into countless volunteer projects
at the University of Delaware.
"In today's economic climate, volunteers are critical to the
health of the University," notes Charles Forbes, vice president
of development and alumni relations. "Ruly Carpenter and his
family have done a great deal for the University and for the
state of Delaware. He truly is the consummate volunteer."
Carpenter is a member of the Board of Trustees, serving as
chairman of the Committee on Student Life and Athletics. He also
was instrumental in raising private funds to help build the Bob
Carpenter Sports/Convocation Center, named in honor of his
father, the late R.R.M. (Bob) Carpenter Jr., a generous
benefactor who served as a board member for more than 40 years.
Why does he devote so much time to the University? Carpenter
says he enjoys his interactions with other board members. "They're
just good people," he says, "and they're fascinating." Also, he says,
"It's kind of a family tradition."
Bob Carpenter Jr. was a "great supporter of the football
program," according to his son, and the elder Carpenter was
instrumental in establishing an annual charitable football game
in Delaware to benefit the developmentally disabled. Ruly's
mother, Mary Kaye Carpenter, also taught him the value of
volunteerism, by founding the Pilot School for children with
learning disabilities and by her involvement in numerous
charitable events.
A graduate of Yale University who attended business
management and accounting courses at Delaware before shepherding
the Phillies to national prominence, Ruly Carpenter also is a
trustee of the Tower Hill School in Wilmington and he's on the
Board of Delaware's Ronald McDonald House. His many volunteer
activities are supported by his wife, Stephanie (Conklin)
Carpenter, and by his three grown children: R.R.M. (Bobby)
Carpenter IV, Delaware '86; David H.C. Carpenter, Delaware '90,
and Lucinda Cattermole.
"Ruly's just a wonderful person," says Edgar N. Johnson, the
UD's director of intercollegiate athletics. "He's a caring,
concerned individual who recognizes the value of athletics as
part of a quality educational
program, and he never hesitates to support our objectives. Our
athletics program simply wouldn't be where it is today without
the support and guidance of the Carpenter family."
University President David P. Roselle agrees. "All of us at
the University of Delaware are pleased that Ruly Carpenter is
maintaining the Carpenter family tradition of outstanding support
for this institution," he says. "We have no better friend than
Ruly Carpenter."
Carpenter isn't planning to retire from volunteer service
anytime soon. "When you're asked to become a trustee at an
institution like Delaware, it's really an honor and a privilege
to be able to serve," Carpenter says. "I'm going to do it as long
as they want me."OBIT:
Ruly Carpenter, 81, Dies; Owned The Phillies’ First Championship Team
By Amelia Podder On Sep 16, 2021

Ruly Carpenter, the third-generation owner of the Philadelphia Phillies, who in 1981 sold the team a year after they won their first World Series, saying he was troubled by the rising cost of player salaries, died on Monday at his home in Montchanin, Del., near Wilmington He was 81.
His wife, Stephanie (Conklin) Carpenter, confirmed the death but did not cite a cause.
Mr. Carpenter, whose grandfather acquired the Phillies in 1943, took over the team from his father in 1972 and helped build it into a contender with players like the third baseman Mike Schmidt and the pitcher Steve Carlton, both future Hall of Famers, as well as Greg Luzinski, Larry Bowa, Garry Maddox and Pete Rose, who signed with the Phillies as a free agent in 1979 after 16 seasons with the Cincinnati Reds.
But although the Phillies finished first in their division in 1976, 1977 and 1978, they lost the National League Championship Series in each of those years. Then, in 1980, they beat the Houston Astros in the N.L.C.S. and defeated the Kansas City Royals in the World Series in six games.
Nearly six months later, though, Mr. Carpenter announced his plan to sell the team, citing spiraling player salaries caused by free agency and arbitration.
“Marvin Miller didn’t force the owners to pay these ridiculous salaries,” he said, referring to the executive director of the players’ union. “We owners did it. I did it. We hoped that common sense would prevail. But it didn’t.”
Mr. Carpenter said he had been incensed by the Atlanta Braves’ signing of Claudell Washington, a good but not great outfielder, to a five-year contract worth $700,000 annually (about $2.2 million in today’s dollars) in late 1980.
“What did I think?” he said in an interview with The New York Times at the time. “You couldn’t print what I thought.”
In late October 1981, he sold the team for $30.175 million to a group led by one of his executives, Bill Giles, whose wealthy partners included Taft Broadcasting. Mr. Carpenter said he believed he would have had to bring in investors to afford the increasing cost of his players’ salaries.
“I just never liked the idea of having to contact three or four other partners if there was a big financial decision that had to be reached,” he told The Philadelphia Daily News in 2008. “And in 1981, I just looked at where baseball was and said, ‘Boy, this is never going to change.’”
He was right. In 1981, the average salary of a major league player was $185,651 (about $570,000 in today’s dollars). Today, it is about $4.2 million. But team values have soared as well; Mr. Carpenter sold the team for 75 times the $400,000 his grandfather had paid for it in 1943. More recently, the hedge fund manager Steve Cohen paid nearly $2.5 billion for the Mets, a record for a baseball team.
Robert Ruliph Morgan Carpenter III was born on June 10, 1940, in Wilmington and grew up in Montchanin. His father, Robert Jr., ran the Phillies for nearly 30 years, and his mother, Mary Kaye (Phelps) Carpenter, helped start a school for intellectually challenged students and owned a shoe store. His grandfather, also nicknamed Ruly, was an executive at DuPont.
Young Ruly attended spring training in Florida with the Phillies; was, he later recalled, “the owner’s bratty little son.” He was 10 in 1950 when the Phillies — a youthful team known as the “Whiz Kids” — were swept by the Yankees in the World Series.
“I remember going to Connie Mack Stadium and Joe DiMaggio hit a home run off Robin Roberts that went up on the roof in left field,” he said in a 2013 interview for the website of the Tower Hill School, the private school in Wilmington that he attended.
He played baseball and football at Tower Hill and, in 1962, graduated from Yale University, where he was captain of the baseball team and played on the football team.
He began working for the Phillies in 1963, first in the treasurer’s office and then in the minor-league system, where he met Paul Owens, a scout. Impressed by Mr. Owens’s ability to evaluate players, he recommended that his father elevate him to farm-team director.
Working together to improve the Phillies, Mr. Carpenter recalled, he and Mr. Owens reviewed the work of their scouts, firing those who had signed players who were not productive. They drafted Luzinski in 1968 and Schmidt in 1971. The next year, Mr. Owens was named general manager, and Mr. Carpenter took control of the Phillies, replacing his father as team president.
“He would treat you the same if you were a superstar or the 25th guy on the team,” Larry Bowa, who was also a Phillies coach, said by phone. “He loved baseball, but he would drop hints every now and then that he thought free agency would get out of hand. He’d say he didn’t know how long he’d keep doing this.”
Mr. Carpenter sold the team in 1981, a few months after the end of a midseason players’ strike that lasted 50 days, the primary issue of which was the compensation a team would receive when it lost a player to free agency. He called the strike “a tragedy and a disaster.”
After he left the Phillies, Mr. Carpenter served on the boards of Tower Hill and the University of Delaware and was a volunteer assistant baseball coach at Tower Hill.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his sons, Robert IV and David; a daughter, Lucinda Carpenter; a sister, Mary Kaye Murray; a brother, Keith; and seven grandchildren.
Stephanie Carpenter said in a phone interview that her husband, in his post-Phillie years, missed the thrill of watching young talent develop but did not miss the economics of baseball. She pointed out that the salary of the Phillies superstar Bryce Harper ($26 million) is almost what her husband received when he sold the team.

Bio:
Charles Dean Mattis, Jr. born December 26th 1942, passed peacefully from this life surrounded by loved ones on July 28th, 2014, after a long battle with Alzheimer's.
He was preceded in death by his parents Charles Dean Mattis Sr., Dorothy (Michael) Mattis and his Angel, wife of 33 years, Bernice Elizabeth (Carpenter) Mattis. Surviving are two brothers Martin Edward Mattis and Michael Eugene (Jill) Mattis, nieces Barbra Wombles, Rebecca (Lou) Mattis-Pistolis, Toni Gonzalez, Teri (Gene) Rosenthal, many great nieces and nephews and countless cousins and extended family.
From his union with Bernice in 1972, his children carry on their legacy. Daughter Jamie Inez (Ed) DeVore, his son Charles Isaac Allen (Jessie) Mattis and daughter Amanda Mari Dawn Mattis, grandchildren Rachel Lopez, Aaron DeVore, Anastasia DeVore, Sophia Mattis, Olen Mattis and Charlotte Mattis.
There are many facts to be known about Charles. He was known as Charles to some, Charlie to others and Chuck by a few. He was a member of Kiwanis, Habitat for Humanity, The Vermilion County Conservation District, American Corn Growers Association, The Bunker Hill Preservation Society, and was instrumental in the Citizens for the Middle Fork Basin and National Education Association Member. But most important to him, as evidenced by the organizations he chose to be a part of, were the people in his life and his community.
Graduating from Oakwood High School in 1961, Charlie went on to graduate from the University of Illinois in 1965 with a Bachelor's Degree in Education. He began his teaching career at Muncie in 1967 until it combined with Fithian Grade School where he remained until its closing in 1987. From there he moved to Oakwood Grade School until he semi-retired in 1993 and was a substitute teacher within the county until 2000. During his time teaching, he returned to Eastern Illinois University and obtained his Master's Degree in Education. It was never his goal to be in administration, but to be the best teacher he could be for his students.
During his teaching career, Charlie coached basketball for both boys and girls teams. During the summer it was not uncommon for neighborhood children to play basketball in his haymow, where he had made a make shift court. He also had a climbing rope that many would give a go at trying to emulate his making it to the top of the barn. It was nearly impossible to be out with Charlie and not encounter a former student. He remembered each and every one and always had the time to say hello and chat.
Being an educator didn't stop with the school year for Charlie. He spent many summers teaching nature classes to school children at both Forest Glen and Kennekuk Parks. Being outdoors was a passion of his and he loved all things and all creatures. He, along with his brother, maintained the family farm for many years and relished being out in the field be it planting, harvesting or putting up hay.
Among Charlie's other interests were politics. He ran for U.S. Congress in 1992 and Illinois State Senate in 1994. He was a stable fixture in assisting other candidates with their own campaigns and was a firm believer in the need to vote. Charlie was also an avid sports fan, following the Fighting Illini and the St. Louis Cardinals. He was more than just a fan, for years he participated in several softball leagues, both fast and slow pitch, Church league to competitive leagues that would travel the state.
While it seemed he did little of it, Charlie enjoyed relaxing reading cowboy novels, mostly Zane Grey and listening to Elvis music. He loved automobiles and had a plethora of them from antiques to off road to sports cars. He was a dry wit, loved a good laugh and appreciated all that he could experience.
He was a source of encouragement for his children. He believed in them with all his heart. He taught them never to give up, never back down from a challenge and persistence pays off. He did whatever was necessary to help them along their way and assure they had a solid foundation to become responsible, respectable adults. He was a loving support of his wife in both her professional career and personal endeavor to serve the congregation of New Life Christian Church. He was a welcoming and loving father to his son-in-law and daughter-in law, with a congenial smile and warm hugs.
This is but a summary of the man that Charlie was. He was a voice of reason in an otherwise unreasonable world. He was the smartest man in most rooms and he never knew it. He was quick to forgive, the first to provide a second chance, the one that could always see the other side. He loved unconditionally, gave generously, accepted humbly and boasted never. These are the greatest teachings he provided us all.
A celebration of Charlie's life will be held at 10:00 am on Friday August 1, 2014 at Sunset Funeral Home and Cremation Center, A Life Celebration Home in Danville IL. Officiating will be Pastor Doug Knapp. Visitation will be held at the Funeral Home 4pm until 8pm on Thursday July 31, 2014. Memorials may be directed to the American Alzheimer Association or National Autism Association in Charlie's name.
