Mary Ann Thurlow, 85, died Wednesday, March 5, 2008, at a Wakefield retirement center.Born June 1, 1922, in Wakefield to Clarence and Alice (Carlstrom) Carpenter, she attended Madura country school and graduated from Wakefield High School. She married Russell Thurlow on May 25, 1940. They made their home and farmed south of Wakefield. Russell preceded her in death on January 20, 1986. She was a member of Madura Congregational Church.
She is also preceded by a daughter, Andrea Junghans, on November 3, 2003.
Survivors include a son, David and wife Marilyn Thurlow, Wakefield; son-in-law, Fred Junghans, Junction City; sister, Lois Conlin, Topeka; grandson, Kyle Junghans, Junction City; granddaughter, Alicia Junhans, Caldonia, MI; granddaughter, Amanda McCosh, Greeley, CO; granddaughter, Allison Copenhaver, Salina; grandson, Justin Thurlow, Wakefield; and 5 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were Saturday, March 8, 2008, at 10:30 a.m. at Madura Congregational Church with burial in the church cemetery.

Lois I. Conlin, 87, of Topeka, passed away Wednesday, September 24, 2014.Lois was born June 26, 1927, in Wakefield KS, the daughter of Clarence and Alice (Carlstrom) Carpenter. She graduated from Wakefield Rural High School. Upon graduation she moved to Topeka where she worked for the Santa Fe Railroad for a number of years.
Lois and her husband-to-be, James Conlin, lived across the street from each other. They saw each other every day at the bus stop and fell in love. James proposed to Lois at the Kansas State Fair on September 12, 1946, at the top of the ferris wheel. They were united in marriage on January 18, 1947, in Topeka and enjoyed 43 years together. He preceded her in death on November 23, 1990.
Lois and her husband owned and operated The Cheese Pantry, gourmet food shop and delicatessen in the Brookwood Shopping Center in Topeka. Lois was the head chef and created the menu for The Cheese Pantry, which was known for its flower pot bread. Following retirement Lois worked as the seafood manager for two Dillons grocery stores in Topeka.
Lois was extremely passionate about her cooking. She enjoyed sewing and was very crafty. She was loving, kind and compassionate to everyone she met. Lois put her family first and was always waiting to plant a kiss on the cheek of anyone she met.
Survivors include her son, Michael Conlin, his wife Cathy of Topeka; daughter Keri Levering and her husband David of Manhattan; son Sean Conlin of Topeka; and grandchildren Matt and Jessica Levering and Paige and Parker Conlin. She was preceded in death by her mother, father and sister, Mary Ann Thurlow.
Lois was cremated and a memorial service will be held 2 p.m. on Saturday, October 4th at Kevin Brennan Family Funeral Home, 2801 SW Urish Road, Topeka KS 66614. Family will greet friends one hour prior to the service. Private inurnment at Mount Hope Cemetery will follow at a later date.
Her family is especially grateful to the staff at Aldersgate Village and Grace Hospice for the compassion and care of Lois.

Duane Harold Beninga, 89, died following illness on June 14 in Loveland. Duane was born March 9, 1926 in Riley, Kansas, son of Harold and Buelah Beninga. He joined the Navy and while on leave in Seattle, Washington, married Marjorie Jean Carpenter on July 1945. He fought in the battles of Iwo Jima and the Philippines during WWII. After the war they lived in Abilene, Kansas and had a daughter, Linda. They then moved to Wichita, Kansas and had a son Mark. Several years later they made their way to Colorado where they resided most of the rest of their marriage and had another son Kelly.
After 56 years Duane lost his wife Marjorie to illness and later met and married Jelean Nelson who survives him today. Duane loved sports, horses, boats and cars (as long as they were red). He loved and supported his children in their various endeavors. Before retiring he was in Commercial Real Estate in Arvada, Colorado, and was instrumental in their Urban Renewal Development Project winning their Man of the Year award presented by the governor of Colorado. Duane was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Max, and his son, Mark. He is survived by his wife, Jelean, daughter and son, 9 grandchildren and 10 1/2 great grandchildren. Duane also had two step daughters and three step grandchildren. (Survivors names omitted) Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, June 23, 2015 at Faith Evangelical Church in Loveland. Cremation has been completed. Memorial contributions may be made to Faith Evangelical Church in care of Kibbey Fishburn Funeral Home.

Margaret “Lucile” Jevons, 97, a lifelong resident of Wakefield, Kansas passed away December 31, 2020, at Stoneybrook Assisted Living in Manhattan KS. Lucile was born on a farm in the Madura area south of Wakefield on April 1, 1923. She was the daughter of Arthur B. and Edith May Carpenter Luttman.
Lucile is preceded in death by her parents, her husband Russell of 68 years and her sister Evelyn Buche. Lucile attended Madura rural grade school, then graduated from Wakefield High School in 1941. Lucile went to work after high school as a secretary for a local insurance company.
Russell and Lucile were married on October 16, 1943. After Russell was discharged from the Army Air Corps, they returned to Wakefield in 1945. Lucile worked as a teller at Farmers and Merchants State Bank and then as the bookkeeper for the Wakefield Telephone Company, the Junction City Telephone Company office in Wakefield, and finally as a service clerk for United Telephone Company in Junction City. Lucile was a member of the Wakefield Madura Congregational Church, a 77 year member of the Order of the Eastern Star, a 74 year member of the VFW Auxiliary, and since childhood a member of the Madura area Priscilla Club. Lucile loved being a homemaker, mother, knitting, playing her piano, and staying in touch with family and friends.

WAKEFIELD-- Russell N. Jevons, 93, died Friday, Feb. 17, 2012, at Golden LivingCenter, Wakefield.Mr. Jevons was born Sept. 18, 1918, at Wakefield, the son of Frank B. and Mary E. (Shivers) Jevons.
He grew up in the Wakefield community and graduated from Wakefield High School in 1937. He attended vocational training at Sweeney Technical School in Kansas City, Mo. for auto mechanics and then worked for Auld Chevrolet, Wakefield. He married Lucile Luttman on Oct. 16, 1943 at Wakefield. He served in the U.S. Army from 1942 to 1945, as a B-17 Bomber flight engineer and top turret gunner.
Following the war, he returned to work at Auld Chevrolet until 1955. He then worked at Fort Riley as a heavy equipment mechanic until he retired in 1980. He was a member of the Madura Congregational Church, Masonic Lodge, a charter member of VFW Post #7774, 381st Bomb Group Association and the Air Forces Escape and Evasion Society. He was preceded in death by one sister, Wilma Jevons.
Survivors include his wife, Lucile Jevons of Wakefield; two sons, Deryl Jevons and wife Linda of Eagar, Ariz. and Keith Jevons and wife Maxine of Manhattan; and six grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 24, at the Highland Cemetery, Wakefield, with the Rev. Todd Britt officiating. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Wakefield.
There will be no visitation.
Memorials may be made to the Russell Jevons Memorial Fund to be designated later in care of Neill-Schwensen-Rook Funeral Home, 918 7th St., Clay Center, KS 67432.

Jack Milton Mooberry passed away June 19, 2000. Born February 10, 1925 to Alex and Mildred Mooberry in Wichita, KS. Moved to Tulsa in 1950 and with his father established M&M Equipment Co. from which he retired as sole owner in October, 1998. God broke the mold when he made Jack Mooberry! His friendships, so broad, are inconceivable. This big ominous man gave his heart to everyone he knew. His sense of humor and cavalier spirit will be in all of our hearts forever.
Preceded in death by his son, Mark and his loving wife, Helen. He is survived by a daughter, Monnie Lu Mooberry, Buckley Milton Mooberry; a brother, Joe Moo- berry and wife, Judy; a niece, Jenifer Calhoon; nephews, Philip and Micah Mooberry. We will always remember how he went out fighting because he loved us all. Service will be 10 a.m., Thursday at Yale Avenue Christian Church. Interment Memorial Park Cemetery. Moore's Eastlawn.

Monnie Lu Mooberry was born March 22, 1960 in Tulsa, Oklahoma to Jack M. & Helen L. (Ramsey) Mooberrry. She was a lifelong Tulsa resident. She passed from this life Thursday, December 3, 2015 at the age of 55 from complications caused by pancreatic cancer.Monnie was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Mark.
The family will receive friends from 4:00 to 6:00 PM Wednesday at Ninde Brookside Funeral Home, 39th and South Peoria Ave. A funeral service will be held 10:00 AM Thursday at Memorial Park Cemetery Chapel, 51st and South Memorial Drive.

Thursday, August 18th, 1938 - Thursday, June 25th, 2020Karen L. Elsasser, age 80, of Abilene, passed away Thursday, June 25, 2020 at the Memorial Hospital in Abilene.
She was born August 18, 1939 in Clay Center, the daughter of Walter and Marie (Carpenter) Harrison. She attended Myersdale Grade School and graduated from Wakefield High School with the class of 1957.
On July 8, 1958 Karen was united in marriage to Harvey D. Elsasser. Karen was a medical secretary at Ft. Riley for many years and was a medical receptionist for Dr. Hamel in Chapman for many years. She enjoyed painting, humming birds, quilting, and her flower garden.
Karen is survived by her two loving children Dan Elsasser and his wife Melody of Abilene, Sandy Clemence and her husband Mike of rural Abilene, brother Walt Harrison, Jr of Sahuarita, Arizona, three grandchildren Michela Brown (David) of Abilene, Samantha Horn (Tim) of Abilene, Amanda Kohman (Matt) of Abilene, and five great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her loving husband Harvey on January 31, 2018, granddaughter Mykel Nicole Clemence and her parents.
Her final resting place will be in the Highland Cemetery at Wakefield, Kansas. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Dickinson County and sent in care of the Martin-Becker-Carlson Funeral Home, 414 NW 3rd, Abilene, Kansas 67410.

Rex TutterrowFormer Brown County resident Rex E. Tutterrow, 65, of Burbank, California, died Sunday, November 5, 1989, in Los Angeles. He had lived in Burbank 43 years.
He was born in Bloomington December 1, 1923, to Elmer and Ruby Richards Tutterrow. He was raised in Brown County. Mr. Tutterrow was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Burbank. He had been a loan officer for Bank of America for 37 years.
Survivors include his wife, the former Imogene Carpenter; a daughter, Jennifer Todd; two grandchildren; and a sister, Fern Tutterrow of Bloomington, who lived many years in Brown County and managed the old Singing Pines Motel in Nashville.
Services were Thursday at the First United Methodist Church in Burbank. Burial was in Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Los Angeles.

She married George W. Carpenter. He preceded her in death. Mrs. Carpenter also was preceded in death by a daughter.
Survivors include a daughter, Tracy Lee McCann, Clay Center; two sons, George A. Carpenter, Clay Center, and William "Wily" Carpenter, Salina; a daughter, Vicky Jackson, Junction City; a brother, Dusty Rhodes, Kansas City, Kan.; and 15 grandchildren.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Neill-Schwensen-Rook Funeral Chapel in Clay Center.
Burial will be at the Greenwood Cemetery in Clay Center.
Mrs. Carpenter will lie in state from 3 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
