Fred W. Carpenter, age 79, of Massey, Md., passed away peacefully with his family by his side on June 9, 2021.
He was born on Oct. 26, 1941, in Kingston, to the late Lloyd Arlie Carpenter and Jennie Fernetta Carpenter.
Fred was a retired Physical Education teacher in the Appoquinimink School District, teaching for 30 years. During his time in the M.O.T. area, he founded and coached the Middletown Wrestling Club in 1975, founded and coached the Middletown Soccer Club in 1978. He coached the Middletown High School Wrestling team from 1974-1983. He then went on to coach St. Andrew's School Wrestling from 1983-2018. He also coached JV baseball at Middletown High School, and St. Andrew's School Freshman Lacrosse.
Fred was the Founder and Mentor of the Middletown Baseball Card Club, the Cofounder and Director of Camp Appoquinimink at Silver Lake Elementary, and Program Director of the Kent County Parks and Recreation at Redding Middle School. Outside of the M.O.T. area,
Fred was involved in coaching and mentoring Team Delaware AAU/USA wrestling from 1982-1987, Faith In Action mentor and Recreation Director of Crystal Beach, Earlville Md., a manager and coach of Millington Warriors Legendary Men's Fastpitch team, member of the National Horseshoe Pitchers Association and an accomplished scout and outdoorsman. He also enjoyed donating many holiday meals to the Friendship House in Wilmington, Del.
Fred was preceded in death by his wife, Emily Carpenter, in 2008.
He is survived by his children: John Carpenter (Dawn), Bill Carpenter (Brenda), and Susan Carpenter; three grandchildren: Brittany Carpenter, Thomas Carpenter, and Emma Carpenter; and one great-grandchild, Sage Jacobs. He is also survived by a sister, Lois Sauers (John); and twin brother, Frank Carpenter (Barbara); two nieces: Shannon Carpenter and Linda Sauers; and six nephews: Matt Sauers, Matt Adamson, John Adamson, Andrew Adamson, Doug Carpenter, and Todd Carpenter. A visitation will be held on Thursday, June 17, 2021, from 10–11 a.m. at Connection Community Church, 4744 Summit Bridge Road, Middletown, Del. Memorial service will begin at 11 a.m. Interment will be private

Emily A. Carpenter, 67, of Massey, MD passed away peacefully on Monday, December 29, 2008 at Christiana Hospital in Newark, DE.

Born on March 20, 1941 in Waynesburg, PA, she was the daughter of the late John and Helen (Parkinson) Adamson.

Emily received her BS in Health and Physical Education from Pennsylvania State University and a MS in Human Resource Management from Wilmington College in Delaware. She most recently retired with more than 40 years of teaching at Middletown High School and the Appoquinimink School District combined.

She was a high school coach of field hockey, softball and volleyball and served as an assistant athletic director for eight years. Emily has been a pairing master in the Middle Atlantic AAU District for 35 years including eight years as the District Pairing Chairperson. She has also been a national wrestling pairing master for twenty-five years and served on the national wrestling executive committee for ten years, including serving as secretary for eight years. She served as the Wrestling Tournament Director for the Junior Olympic Games for twelve years and was a life member of the AAU. Emily was also a swim and CPR instructor for the American Red Cross.

Emily's professional affiliations include the Delaware Interscholastic Athletic Association State Softball Tournament Committee from 1986-2006, President of The Appoquinimink Education Association for six years, Secretary for the Appoquinimink Education Association for ten years, Middletown High School Wrestling Tournament Director for ten years and St. Andrew's School Wrestling Tournament Director for five years.

She currently was a member of the Delaware and National State Education Associations, Alpha Delta Kappa, American Association for University Women, as well as the Delaware and National Associations for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance.

Emily has been recognized for her hard work and dedication with numerous awards. She received the Walnut Street YMCA Wrestling Service Award in 1985 and 1989, AAU Wrestling Committee Official of the Year in 1988, AAU Junior Olympic Games Leadership Award in 1991, 1994, 1996 and 1997, AAU President's Leadership Award in 1996, and the National Wrestling Committee Outstanding Pairing Master in 1999.

When Emily wasn't busy teaching or coaching, she enjoyed making doll houses and miniature furniture, creating shadow boxes, working on crossword puzzles, traveling and going to the beach. Her artistic abilities where expressed in her paintings, especially those done in water color and in her beautiful calligraphy writings. Christmas was Emily's favorite time of the year when she delighted in sharing her extensive collection of Santa Claus' with others.

In addition to her parents, Emily was preceded in death by a brother, Commander John C. Adamson.

She leaves a life full of memories to her husband of 43 years, Fred W. Carpenter, Sr.; a daughter, Susan Carpenter-Hill and her husband, Steven of Townsend; two sons, Fred W. Carpenter, Jr. and his wife, Brenda of Newark and John L. Carpenter and his wife, Dawn of Harrington; a granddaughter, Brittany Carpenter and another grandchild expected in June; as well as many dear friends and colleagues.

Memorial services will be held 2 pm on Saturday, January 3, 2009 at Daniels & Hutchison Funeral Home LLC, 212 N. Broad Street, Middletown, DE where family and friends may visit one hour prior to services. Interment will be private.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Special Olympics of Delaware, University of Delaware, 619 S. College Avenue, Newark, DE 19716-1901.
