Page 42: 13. Sudna Elizabeth (16) Carpenter was born about 1765, married Samuel
Tanner on November 28, 1791 and died after 1850. Sudna's brother, Thomas, was
the bondsman for this marriage in Harrison County, Virginia. Samuel Tanner was
a veteran of the Revolutionary War (Jesse (16) Carpenter was one of his
testators when Sam made his pension application, but didn't receive any land
grant or pension (page 43) because he had not served long enough).  These
Tanners, along with a man named Jonathan Wolfe and a boy called "Tate", are
credited with being the founders of Spencer, seat of Roane County, West
Virginia. They are variously said to have lived in Harrison, Wood, Jackson and
Roane Counties. Aside from a brief stay in Gallia County, Ohio near her
brother, Jesse, they never moved, but the counties did!

CHILDREN: Page 52-54: Children of Sudna Elizabeth (16) Carpenter, of Solomon
(15), of Joseph (14):
       1. William Tanner was born about 1790. No further information.
       2. Jesse "Ike" Tanner was born circa 1795, married 1st Mary "Polly"
Carpenter 14 August 1820 in Mason County (Mary was a daughter of Jesse and
Sarah Jane Riffe Carpenter) and 2nd Judith Carpenter (Judy was a daughter of
Jeremiah and Elizabeth Hamm Carpenter) circa 1837. All of Jesse and Judith
Carpenter Tanner's children 1837-1846 listed their parents as Jesse and Judy
Tanner when they married.  Judy died 10 October 1859 and is reportedly buried
in the "Old Tanner Cemetery" on Craig Ridge.  Mary Carpenter Tanner died in
childbirth with her last child, William, and is supposedly buried in the same
graveyard. Jesse Tanner married 3rd Lucinda Raines 11 February 1860 and died 26
March 1885. Lucinda was a daughter of Uriah and Massie (Hughes) Gandee, a widow
of Abraham Raines and a first cousin, but
once removed, to Jesse Tanner through the Hughes family. They are buried in the
Memorial Gardens Cemetery at Spencer, West Virginia. Jesse and Lucinda's (Page
52) children, 1862-1872, all listed their parents as Jesse and Lucy or Lucinda
when they married. Parental listings offer substantial proof of whom Jesse
Tanner married and
when he married them.
    3. Joseph Tanner married Nancy Miller 17 August 1821 in Mason County,
Virginia- now West Virginia. Joseph and Jesse Tanners' marriage records are
found in Point Pleasant (Reverend Benjamin Wright's original records may be
inspected in Cottageville), West Virginia. This Nancy Miller has not been
linked with the pioneers,
Samuel and/or Joshua Miller, and remains unidentified as far as family is
concerned.
    4. James Tanner was born circa 1800 and married Nancy (surname unknown).
    5. Elijah Tanner was born about 1802 and married Marian King 29 August
1833. (This woman's name is also found as Mary A. and Mary Ann.)
    6. Mary Tanner was born around 1810. No further information.
    7. Elizabeth Tanner was born circa 1812 and married Benjamin Wright.
    8. Louise Tanner married Basil Miller. No further information.
9.There was at least one other child in this family- perhaps an
?Artimethia?
Samuel Tanner, Sudna Elizabeth Carpenter, Jonathan Wolfe, and a boy called
"Tate" were supposedly the first settlers in what is now Spencer, West Virginia
in 1812 (Jesse Carpenter's oldest son, Thomas, was fifteen years old at that
time and was nicknamed "Tater"). They had heard very enticing stories about the
area and its wonderful spring from Tanner's brothers-in-law, Jesse Hughes and
Jesse Carpenter, and had decided to sojourn there to see what it was like and
perhaps settle.
It seemed to be an ideal place to homestead. There was a huge overhanging
rock shelf (variously called "the Cliffs", "Carpenter's Cave" et cetera), the
beautiful spring, a nearby creek (Tanner's Run) and abundant game in the
surrounding forest.
There were even gigantic sugar trees in the "bottoms" for maple syrup in
March if things went well. Logs were cut and stood on end between ground and
ceiling to form the outside wall and brush was piled against it for insulation
and to shed water. Other logs were split to make "puncheon" table and chairs,
dry leaves were piled in the corners to serve as beds and a fire pit made so
that most of the smoke would go out through a crevice in the roof. A small
field had been cleared and enough corn planted to see them through the winter
(squash and "lazy wife" beans were interspersed with the "eight rows white"
corn to provide other preservable foodstuff).
A sturdy cabin was built where the Roane County courthouse now stands the
following spring and Elizabeth, supposedly the Tanners" first child, was born.
Other Carpenters and Tanners as well as Runnions and Millers inhabited the
region shortly (page 53) thereafter. It would be unusual to find many people in
Roane County, even today, who are not related in some way to at least one of
these old founding families.
The cliffs are still there on the campus of old Spencer High School but are
no more than a shadow of their original selves. Because of the danger to the
children, much of the shelf was broken off deliberately. There is a movement
afoot to preserve them. In their "heyday" the cave consisted of two rooms, side
by side with a partition of rock in between. The larger room must have been
some fifteen feet deep and thirty feet long with an eight foot ceiling, The
smaller room was just as deep but perhaps only half as long and served as a
stable for livestock, especially the family's milk cow.

SAMUEL & THOMAS CARPENTER. STATE OF VIRGINIA.
Sidney Carpenter on marriage record not Sudna, m. by Rev. Joseph

NOTE: There is, at times, heated discussion of who was Samuel's spouse(s).
All can agree on "Sudna or Sidney or both." Who were her parents is another
question.  So I will list 2 spouses until further detail can come out.

We have a mess with John Greathouse Sr. who married Sarah McDade. She was the daughter of James McDade and Rachel Tanner. Rachel Tanner was the daughter of Edward & Rachel [maiden name unknown] Tanner and a sister to Samuel Tanner who married Sudna Carpenter.

My lineage goes through Rachel Tanner and Samuel Tanner.

Edward & Rachel ? Tanner

..Rachel Tanner & James McDade

....Sarah McDade & John Greathouse Sr.

John Greathouse Sr. appeared near Evans, WV about 17 Sep 1806 when he announced his intentions to marry Sarah McDade in a marriage bond. It is almost like he walked out of of cloud leaving no trace to where he was residing before arrived at Evans, WV. Based on records he had the opportunity to state his age on between 1810 and 1866, he appears to have been born between March 1778 and 1782. If he was born in March 1778, then he was conceived about 9 months prior in June 1777, which would suggest his father was alive in June 1777, but perhaps not alive when he was born about March 1778. The only record which supports a March 1778 birth would be his headstone with inscription given by his son Edward Greathouse who ordered the headstone from a stone cutter in Ravenswood. I am thinking that Edward Greathouse may have become aware that his father was somewhat older than his father related to a Justice of the Peace, age 74 in 1856, so born about 1782.

There is some interesting individuals named in the household of John & Sarah McDade Greathouse as farm laborers in the 1850 census, Mordecai Stackhouse and Lewis Stackhouse. Mordecai was the son of Rohanah Greathouse who married John Stackhouse in Harrison County, VA in 1798. Lewis, son of Aaron Stackhouse was a grandson of Rohanah Greathouse Stackhouse.

I think that Rohanah Greathouse Stackhouse, Mordecai Stackhouse and Lewis Stackhouse knew what relationship John Greathouse Sr. was to them, but we don't.

If John Greathouse Sr. was born about March 1778, then there are two Greathouse males who died between 27 Sep 1777 and March 1778, who could have been the father of John Greathouse Sr.. Jacob Greathouse was killed during the Indian ambush of Cpt. William Foreman's Company on 27 Sep 1777. Daniel Greathouse was deceased by March 1778, when his brother John Greathouse was appointed administrator of the estate of Daniel Greathouse deceased.

Daniel Greathouse can be excluded from candidates who could have been the father of John Greathouse Sr. based on:

1799 - Paris District Court: Chancery Case # 3166, Gabriel Greathouse vs Andrew McCreery, Mary McCreery, Richard Morris and others
http://greathouse.us/archives/usa/ky/bourbon/1799-dep-greathouse-gabriel.htm

Allan W. Eckert was the first to conclude that Daniel Greathouse and Jacob Greathouse were brothers. I really hate to burst the bubble for the rest of the Greathouses who want to believe this, but it just is not so. I would grant that they were probably first cousins.

Johannes Adolph Grothaus & Anna Amelia Miller

..Johannes Grothaus, born 1721, moved to Philadelphia City about 1745 where he raised his family.

....Jacob Grothaus, born about 1749, married Catharina Sybilla ? about 1770, baptized son Jacob on 5 Feb 1771 at St. Michael's and Zion Church, Philadelphia City. Worked as journeyman tanner with George Cooper, tanner, 3rd Street, Philadelphia City through March 1771.

....Henry Grothaus, born about 1750, may have been illegitimate Grothaus child baptized at German Reformed Church in May 1750, was renting lot in Middle Ward from John Ross in 1774.

Hi John,
The 1796 marriage record for Jesse Carpenter (RIN 5345) names his bride as Jenny Rife, and there is no record identifying her as Sarah Jane even though many internet trees state that. Her surname was not Wright -- the Rev. John Alderson, who married them, was a literate man, and he spelled Wright correctly in his list of marriages that he performed. Rife was later spelled Riffe -- it was pronounced "riffy" not "ryte."
The Jesse Carpenter who married in 1814 to Margaret Cottrell did not marry in 1796 to Jenny Wright -- he would have been only 11 years old at that time.
Both Jesses were too young to have served in the Revolutionary War. There are 4 Jesse Carpenters with War of 1812 service in Virginia or Ohio. One was the Jesse Carpenter born c1785 who married Margaret, the other three were from other places in Virginia.
The Van Ripper family tree information about the Carpenters is chock full of errors, for example, listing Amos Carpenter who was born 14 Feb 1754 in VA as born in "Lebanon, New London, Connecticut, USA." They cite two references, (1) U.S. and International Marriage Records, 1560-1900 which are in large part unverified user-contributed say-so information that cannot be accepted at face value; and (2) unverified user-contributed Ancestry Family Trees that are no longer available -- and probably just as well because they most likely cited other Ancestry Family Trees none of which were based on original sources. The many obvious errors make it clear that they have been indiscriminately copying and conflating others' work.
Terry

Older notes follow.

NOTE:
He married twice. First wife's name is unknown, it may have been Polly.
He served as an Indian spy during the Revolution, under Major William Lowther
and in Col. Joseph Crockett's Regiment. This regiment was called Illinois as
it was under George Rogers Clark which went to Ohio country to subdue the
Indians at at Vincennes. These soldiers protected the Continental Army from
having to fight on two fronts. IE the Indians in the west and the British in
the east. Jesse also served in the War of 1812.
Braxton county, Virginia is now in West Virginia.

Jesse served as a private in the VA militia under Captain Trunk's Company of Virginia for 2 years.

Allan W. Eckert was the first to conclude that Daniel Greathouse and Jacob Greathouse were brothers. I really hate to burst the bubble for the rest of the Greathouses who want to believe this, but it just is not so. I would grant that they were probably first cousins.

9639. Elizabeth Tanner

Was there two Elizabeth Tanners in this family?  One died young?
Elizabeth Tanner was born circa 1812 and married Benjamin Wright.

9641. Joseph Tanner

This Nancy Miller has not been
linked with the pioneers, Samuel and/or Joshua Miller, and remains
unidentified as far as family is concerned.
Nancy Miller probably married Joseph Carpenter also.

Nancy Miller

Two Millers listed.  Nancy Miller & ? Miller. Probably the same but maybe
sisters?

9646. Artimethia Tanner

There was at least one other child in this family- perhaps an ?Artimethia?

9647. Louise Tanner

Louise Tanner married Basil Miller. No further information.

9648. Mary Wright

Mary Tanner was born around 1810. No further information.

NOTE:
I have never seen anything that would suggest that this line of Carpenters originated in nor ended up in Georgia, especially with John F. Carpenter's Estate being settled in Cabell County, (W) VA.  Most research leads into southern VA where John F. and Polly Wheeler Carpenter have land records in Greenbrier Co., VA.  The close proximity of the Carpenters in Roane/Jackson Co., (W)VA would suggest that there might be a connection with John F. Carpenter.  Lewisburg, WV also puts John F. Carpenter and wife Polly, in the neighborhood of Joseph Carpenter, known to live on Potts Creek in Alleghany Co. VA. For many Carpenter researchers, they remain elusive.  There is always a puzzle piece missing.  Included here are notes I have collected over the years from various places and from several researchers:

================================================

In November of 1781, the Virginia legislature enacted the first law to collect taxes on land and personal property. It can found in Hening's
Statutes at Large, Vol. X, p. 500-517.

With respect to personal property, the act directed the following:

1. Every free male person over age 21, ten shillings (this included free blacks)
2. all slaves, ten shillings
3. each horse, mare, colt and mule, two shillings
4. cattle, 3 pence per head
5. Each wheel of a coach, chariot, paheton, chaise or stage wagon, riding carriages, 5 shillings per wheel
6. Billiard tables, 50 Pounds each (obviously a true luxury)
7. Ordinary licenses, 5 pounds

Contrary to popular myth, the tax collector did not visit each household individually to assess the contents. This system carried over from the colonial times (and in to the modern day), whereby the person responsible for paying the tax turned in his list to the local tax commissioner. One key component of this particular act was the anyone owning slaves was also to supply the tax commissioner with the names of the slaves in his possession. The 1782 list is the only list
which universally lists the slaves by name.

In the case of absentee owners, the overseer of the plantation was designated as the agent and was responsible for turning in the list of taxable property.

The penalty for concealing taxable property was 500 pounds of tobacco.
This Act is quite lengthy and this is only a thumbnail version of it.
It was amended many times over the years, and the items that were taxable continued to change, and the age of white male tithables was sometimes age 16, not age 21.

Now, it has has also been suggested that all white males over 21 were automatically listed as a person chargable with a tax and ergo, when their names first appear on a tax list, it means they were 21 years old THAT YEAR. This is not the case. It is more common that a man first appears on the tax list as "the person chargable with the tax" when he is first married and heading his own household. If that man were, say 25 years old, and living in his father's household, he would be among the tithes of the father's household. Unless of course the father insisted he pay his own head tax. I don't think we can say there is a "rule" about this. We are lucky when we find a tax lists that lists all of the white male tithes on the list under one house hold.

================================================

Although as John wrote there can be geographic patterns in the tithable and tax lists, what I've found in Hening's Statutes and in Court records say the individual tax payer (or in some cases an overseer for his employer) was required to turn in his/her list to the appropriate official and was not visited door to door.

The Library of Virginia's article about Colonial Tithables describes how the various laws required people to turn in their list of tithables to the justice or district captain or commissioner by a certain time, then they in turn had to submit their lists to the next higher authority by a deadline, etc.
See:

I'd like to address something that is often a mistaken assumption.
That is that tax commissioners went door to door to assess people's land and, more specifically, their personal property holdings.

This is not the case. People were responsible for turning in their own list of taxable property. Prior to the revolution, this would be their tithe lists. Starting in 1782, this would be both tithables (white males over 16, slaves, horses, cows--the lists change from time to time as to what was taxable.)

The tax man did not go personally inspect each house hold. Just as today, you are responsible for reporting your taxable property (a car, a boat, a plane, a tractor, etc.)

Since most of these lists are arranged by first letter of the last name (some of the earlier ones are simply in the order that the lists were turned in), the best clue (and it's only a clue) is to be careful to note on which day the tax commissioner received the information. This can be quite helpful when working with several people of the same last name. If a certain group of men are consistently turning in their reports on the same day (and therefore listed as one consecutive group) and a few others of the last name are consistently not among that group, this can be helpful in sorting out family relationships.

But, unlike the census taker, the tax man did not go door to door. There are many, many court records both colonial and post colonial, where people were fined for turning in their lists. In colonial times, a nosy neighbor could turn you in for under reporting your full list of tithables.

While legally any white male over 16 was tithable, it was also the custom to put that event off for a couple of years. Still, one can often determine a very idea of a birth year of such a white male when
he first shows up on the tithe list. However, sometimes he will just show up as an additional tithe in his father's household until he sets
up his own household, which of course would be at marriage. Therefore, these lists can also be a useful clue in determining a year of marriage when no marriage records exist.

-------------------------------------------------

Beginning in 1782, the old quit rent system for taxing land was replaced by the land tax. This has a long history of how it was developed (involving many disputes between the various colonies on how
to pay for war debts and the discrepency in land values from state to state) but for purposes of genealogical research, that is not very important.

The 1782 list will give owners name, acreage, assessed value and tax due. From 1783-1787, the list consist only of "alterations", that is,
transfers from one party to another.

Have you been unable to figure out how land got to one owner from another? This is your guide to finding out. It has come in as the only solution to an inheritance or death or unrecorded deed many a time.

These are generally not alphabetical. To the extent they are it will be by the former owner, not the new owner. Thus, you must go through each list carefully. You will want to compare amounts of acreage to be certain.

A short cut to doing this is that if the 1788 list shows the same property to the same owner as in 1782, no change had been made and you can roll merrily along. If, however, the person taxed in 1782 is not taxed in 1788, you'll need to go through the alterations lists from 1783 to 1787.

However, for any period after 1788 when you cannot find a deed of transfer, or a will, some lists still give the alterations at the end of each list. Not always, but often. You will always want to check the end of any tax list--personal property or land--for such notes. In many cases, this might lead you to a record that is not indexed under
the names you are seeking (especially in cases where commissioners were charged with selling a deceased land, and the case of unrecorded deeds, or simple inheritances.)
---------------------------------------------------

What I wrote below deserves some clarification. On the personal property tax lists, if a man is listed but shows "0" white tithes, you can be nearly certain he is living somewhere else--either in another district within the same county or in another county altogether.

Land tax lists are sometimes a bit more helpful, in later years. Many lists will begin to state where the residence of the person being taxes is, if not tin he same locale.

One last note, it is often stated by many researchers that the tax lists for 1808 in Virginia are missing. They are not missing. They never existed. The General Assembly that year declared that there were sufficient revenues in the public coffers to forego a tax in that year. That is probably the first and only time in history that has ever happened.

They did not usually have to travel to the court house. They travelled to the home of the tax commissioner for their district. The first few years of Culpeper County are divided into at least 13 separate districts (if memory serves me correctly)--which makes it quite a chore to find the right

Thank you for letting me know about the cd set. My ancestor Alexander Boyle, son of Major John Boyle and Jane Black Boyle, married Mary Carpenter, according to research on the internet she was the daughter of Zophar Carpenter.  Do you know if this is correct?  If it is I will order the cd set right away.  Please let me know.

marriage took place in the newly formed Garrard Co. and there were no
other Carpenters except Zophar and his family.  Certainly, none of these
ladies would have been on the frontier without family.  Therefore, it
looks like Zophar had this one for a daughter also.   There is a
McCollum connection to the Carpenters through the Reed/Reid family.  In
1808, John Reed either made his will and / or it was proved on the same
date or in the same year.  The court papers do not say when proved.  In
his will are sons, John and Andrew; a daughter Rachel, who in the same
year married Rufus Carpenter, son of Zophar.  The will also put to
Rufus' charge, the care and education of a David McCollum.  This same
David later married a Polly Gentry in neighboring Lincoln Co.  He later
moved to Missouri at about the same time Zophar's youngest son Robert
went west.  David took as his second wife, Nancy Carpenter, daughter of
Robert.  An 1889 short biography of David McCollum reports that, "His
father, his grandfather, and his great-grandfather were all named Davy;"
that he was born in Garrard Co., Ky., Jan 22, 1802.  His mother was
Polly Reed.  This Polly had to be a sister to Rachel who married Rufus
Carpenter and probably died in child birth or shortly after David was
born.  Knowing that Rachel, his daughter was to be married or was
already married to Rufus, was incentive and agreeable to all that David
would be in good hands.   At least the family ties continued.  As to how
close Stephen, husband of Rachel Carpenter McCollum was to the other
McCollums is uncertain.  Stephens bond was signed by a Daniel McCollum.
Perhaps he was a brother to David, the father of young David who was put
in the care of Rufus.  As with the Tinsleys, there is no further
knowledge of Rachel and Stephen.

9672. Jeremiah Carpenter

Garrard county was created out of Madison in 1797.
Some researchers do not agree that Jeremiah belongs in this family.

4093. Robert Carpenter

BIRTH: 29 Apr 1783 in Charles Carpenter record, 29 May 1783 in another
record.  Not born in Augusta county, VA.  He was born in Madison county, KY.
Terry Lee Carpenter comments:
Perhaps it should also be noted that no birth date is given on Robert's gravestone -- his date of birth has been calculated from his age at death, 81 years, 11 months, and 24 days on 22 Mar 1865, which works out to 26 Mar 1783 by most calculators. Calculating age at death depended on the memory of the individual or his family and the math skills of the person doing the calculation, so could be off by a significant amount. Different transcribers get different day and month numbers, but agree on the 1783 year. TLC

NOTE: This area was Kentucky county, VA before 1780. After 1780 it was
Lincoln county, VA then KY then in 1786 Madison KY Territory.  In 1792 KY
became a state.
Garrad County, KY was formed in 1797.
Robert Carpenter moved to Missouri or Kansas about 1852?
He is not Robert Carpenter-20271 who is from a Zimmerman line.

CHILDREN: Children order and no birth dates given in both records, except as
indicated.
