The night of 24 - 25 October a cruiser, a destroyer, two large merchantmen, a transport and a small cargo vessel were believed damaged. A direct hit was scored on the cruiser, which also was strafed from low altitude. On the night of 24 - 25 October, two 5,000-ton merchantmen were hit and believed sunk, a large merchantman was damaged and one gunboat was blown up. In addition, hits were scored on the dock areas. Headquarters estimates that the total tonnage of Japanese shipping sunk or put out of commission by these raids amounted to 100,000 tons. All three of these missions encountered severe weather conditions en route to and from the target, making navigation exceedingly difficult. Due to low cloud formations over the target area, the attacks were launched at altitudes ranging from 200 to 5,000 feet. All attacks were made in the face of heavily concentrated anti-aircraft fire. The personal courage and zealous devotion to duty displayed by Major Benn during this period have upheld the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, the 5th Air Force, and the United States Army Air Forces.

Death: 30 Mar 2020 (aged 74) Webster, Monroe County, New York, USA
Burial: Webster Rural Cemetery, Webster, Monroe County, New York, USA
Memorial #: 208769183
Bio:
Passed away peacefully, on Monday, March 30, 2020, at 74 years old, surrounded by family.  She was born on June 21, 1945 in Winona, Minnesota, to the late Irvin and Margaret Baer.  She married her true love, Robert I. Carpenter, who preceded her death in 2001.
Mary is survived by her children, Tod (Dina), Tonia (Bryan) Armstrong, and Chad (Deana);  grandchildren, Maia, Hailey, Tyler, Derick, Troy and Avery;  sister, Karen McNeal;  brother, Bill (Barb) Baer;  several close relatives and dear friends.  She loved and touched us all deeply.
Mary was a dedicated mother, grandmother, sister, and friend.  She loved having her family over for Sunday morning breakfasts, enjoyed having her grandchildren over for sleepovers and shopping sprees, and cherished her numerous adventures with family and friends. From casino trips, to line-dancing, to horseback riding, she was always ready to have fun.  Mary brought joy, happiness and sunshine into our lives, and impacted the lives of many others.  Her kind and gentle spirit, and zest for life will live on through all who knew her.
She left us like a shooting star and will forever be in our hearts.  We want to thank her for all the sweet memories and traditions she has left behind.
A Family Graveside Service was held at Webster Rural Cemetery.
