Under the #83 Archelaus Carpenter you have #2 child Elizabeth md. to Caleb
Green. This is an error in the Carpenter book. His name was James Green...
in one land grant he is referred to as Thomas Lewis James Green, but James is
what he referred to himself in his will. I have a copy of a picture of James
(his son-in-law was noted watercolorist Anthony Flower). They lived near the
Carpenters on Washdamoak Lake in New Brunswick and the Carpenter and Green
families later intermarried again... but not my line.
Notes for ELIZABETH CARPENTER:
Number 224 in the book, Carpenter Family in America, 1901 by Daniel H.
Carpenter. She either remained in North Castle or else returned there at an
early day.

...
The incorrect info that has been sent to me and that I have seen posted on
the Internet showed Elizabeth Carpenter married (1) Havelock Mosher and (2)
James Green, and had three children with Mosher - Berton, Kenneth and Sara,
which makes me very ancient indeed. As far as my New Brunswick ancestors go, I have copies of the microfilmed
original documents that I ordered from the Provincial Archives of New
Brunswick; i.e. an 1811 petition for land where James Green stated his age
and the PANB record (Loyalist documents) stating that Elizabeth Green
(Elizabeth Carpenter) was still alive in 1845. Luckily for descendants of
Elizabeth (Carpenter) Green and James Green, one of their daughters, Mary,
married Anthony Flower who painted many pictures of family and friends in
the early to later part of the 1800s. I found a baptismal record on a GenWeb
site for their youngest daughter Catherine Green that described her as "Black
adult born 4 Oct 1802". I was smitten with the idea that I could be a
"sista"HIPS Firewall enforcing packet but decided I'd better check it out. I contacted the transcriber who
sent me a jpeg of the document. I replied that it looked to me like it was
the father's occupation of Blacksmith and he agreed.I realize the huge importance of documentation. Two of my female ancestors
married to Moshers were Mayflower descendants and though the GSMD is very
strict about documentation, as they should be, I currently have membership
in the Society as a descendant of four heads of families. Finding
documentation to prove my Margaret Ann Pineo's descent from Miles Standish
and Henry Samson has proven to be much more difficult! But that's one of the
most challenging and enjoyable parts of genealogy.

They ... settled near present-day Wheeling, West Virginia, then part of Ohio County , Va . ... Edmund died there in 1801, and was buried in Jul 1801 in Little Pigeon Creek, Ohio, Virginia,COMMENT:
There is NO Little Pigeon Creek in Ohio County, Virginia which is now in West Virginia.
West Virginia became a state in 1863 and it was the western counties of Virginia since 1781. When the Virginia Colony was organized its western boundary was not defined. The present day states of West Virginia, Kentucky (then 1776 Kentucky County, VA) and the far southern parts of Ohio and Indiana were all Virginia in 1801.
Ohio County, Virginia was created in 1788 from the District of Augusta. The present day Ohio County, WV is in a narraow piece of land that extends north (also called a pan handle), from West Virginia bordered in the east by the State of Pennsylvania and Ohio to the west.
In present day Ohio County, WV there is no Little Pigeon or Pigeon creek, run, tributary or any thing similar.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Rivers_of_Ohio_County,_West_Virginia
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_tributaries_of_Wheeling_Creek
There are a lot of Pigeon Creek or Rivers in America. There is even one in Mingo County, WV which is 250 some miles from Ohio County, WV.
BUT ... The closest one to Ohio County, WV is ....
http://www.virginiaplaces.org/boundaries/cessions.html
But in an area next to an area ceded to Western Pennsylvania by Virginia by 1781 which also acknowledged in 1783/1784 that the western boundary of Virginia was the Ohio River. There is several Pigeon Creeks near Washington, PA which over 40 miles eastward from Wheeling, WV using the I-70 to Somerset Township and just east of State Highway 519. Just east you will see branches of Pigeon Creek called the Northern Branch ( 40.13290443345783, -80.10392667737571 ), Center Branch ( 40.13290443345783, -80.10392667737571 ) and Southern ( 40.13290443345783, -80.10392667737571 ) Branch of the that river that flow mostly eastward deeper in PA Pigeon Creek flows through Bentleyville, PA ( 40.11659411702687, -80.00843023991992 )!
Then there is a Pigeon Creek northwest of Akron, OH in Summit County at: 41.111700190593865, -81.67337789186745
AND then the most claimed one associated with the story is ...
Little Pigeon Creek Community, also known as Little Pigeon Creek Settlement and Little Pigeon River settlement, was a settlement in present Carter and Clay Townships,[1]: 271–272, 412 [2] Spencer County, Indiana along Little Pigeon Creek.[3] The community, in the area of present-day Lincoln City, Indiana,[1][a] was established from frontier land by 1816.[4] ... In 1820 there were 40 or more families, including Abraham Lincoln's family, that lived in the community.[3][b]

Edmund fought at the Battle of Ticonderoga in 1758 and at the siege of Quebec in 1759. (French and Indian War) He moved his family first to Berkshire County, Massachusetts by 1774. In the 1780's he moved to New York, first to Little Hoosick. Albany County, New York and then after 1787 to Delhi, New York. "One of the earliest western pioneers of whom we have a record is Edmund Rathbone (1737-1801), son of John3 Rathbun (John2-'). After serving in the Revolution , he moved about 1785 with his wife and eight children from Tyringham, Mass ., to Delhi , Delaware County , N.Y., where he operated a mill. About 1796, probably accompanied by his oldest son, John, and John's family , Edmund set out for the west in a horsedrawn wagon . They probably followed the Susquehanna River valley south into Pennsylvania and then followed the Ohio River westward. On their trip, they fell in with another west-bound immigrant, Isaac Taylor, and his family. They all continued together and settled near present-day Wheeling, West Virginia, then part of Ohio County , Va . They were joined in the next year or two by Edmund 's wife , Mercy, and younger children - Edmund Jr. and Lovica, both of whom married children of Isaac Taylor. Edmund died there in 1801 , and was buried in Jul 1801 in Little Pigeon Creek, Ohio, Virginia, United States 8 9 10.). The cause of his death was The effect of drinking too much water while overheated from working.

Number 699 in the Carpenter Memorial on page 130. No family listed in the CM.
NOTE:
This Family Line submitted by John E. Proctor (brn 1933) of Stilwell KS. 4/96
Whether this Christopher is one of the Christophers we are looking for as of Sept 1995, or not, no one is sure of. Art Carpenter feels that this Christopher is some ones father, as the Christopher family name comes down to and through the MI Carpenter lineage.Information on this Christopher is found in the Carpenter Epistle, of May 1982, page 23.
In a letter dated 24 May 1999 Ted (Theodore) Atkinson to John L. Carpenter of NH indicates that this Christopher, son of Jeremiah, died a few weeks after birth and the name "Christopher" was not used again in that family. He cites West Gr. V.R. Yet other researchers give a death date of Jan 1740 for a previous "Christopher" who died at 10 weeks for this family.
NOTE CHILDREN LISTED ARE PROBABLY NOT CORRECT!!!
OR ... The name Christopher is correct but Y-DNA indicates a non-paternal event (NPE) suggesting a formal or informal adoption. Either way descendants are part of Group 1 of the Carpenter Cousins Y-DNA Project.

In memory of Wm. Cobb, Esq. who departed this life March 8, 1826; aged 77 years.
With pain & toil I long did till the ground But in it now a resting place hath found Old age & wearied toil without repose. At 77 years in death my eyes did close. | Old cemetery, Marcellus village. It is said he fought at Bunker Hill, side by side with David Barber, whose son married his daughter Hannah. He came, however, from Shaftsbury, Vt., in 1794, where he was in Capt. Bigelow Lawrence's Co. in '80. In 1790 he was credited to Hartland, Vt. He had three sons. Daniel, the oldest, was born in '76 and died in 1852. This son and his wife, Betsey Tinkham, came on horseback from Vermont on their wedding journey. The Carpenter Genealogy says Molly Carpenter married William Cobb, a Revolutionary soldier who died in Marcellus. Mary Cobb, his wife, survived him. He made his will, Dec. 28, 1825, and it was recorded April 26, 1826, Milo Hickok and Josiah Welsh being executors.Family Members

Mumford Eldred
Birth: 23 Jan 1786 Vermont, USA
Death: 25 Jan 1870 (aged 84) Martin, Allegan County, Michigan, USA
Burial: East Martin Cemetery, Martin, Allegan County, Michigan, USA
Memorial #: 170277040
Bio:
Mumford Eldred, the first settler within the limits of this township, was a native of Pownal, Bennington Co., Vt., and passed his boyhood days in sight of the Green Mountains. After arriving at manhood's estate, he engaged for some time in buying and selling live-stock. Subsequently, the brothers Caleb (afterwards the well known Judge Caleb Eldred, of Kalamazoo County) and Mumford Eldred established a meat-market in the village of Catskill, Greene Co., N. Y. By his first marriage, Mumford became the father of four children, viz.: Norman, Mumford, Jr., Cornelia, and Margaret. While a resident of Catskill he married, for his second wife, Miss Jane Whitaker. About 1832 he removed to Delaware Co., N. Y., where he remained two years. In the fall of 1834, accompanied by his wife and five children, viz.: Andrew, Stephen, Belinda, Elizabeth, and Catherine, he journeyed to Kalamazoo Co., Mich., where his brother Caleb, his son Mumford, Jr., and many other relatives, had already became conspicuous as among the first settlers and the most active business men of that region. Mumford Eldred first located his family in the Gull Prairie settlement, where they remained about eighteen months.
On the 8th day of January, 1836, he made the first purchase of land in township 2 north, of range 11 west, it being a tract of 40 acres known as the northwest quarter of the northwest quarter of section 29. Four weeks later, however, he bought 40 acres more, a tract described as the southwest quarter of the northwest quarter of the same section.
Early in the spring of 1836 (March) a substantial log house was erected upon the land first purchased, and soon after, assisted by Hugh Kirkland, of Gull Prairie, and James Flockhart, of Plainfield, Mr. Eldred and family were duly installed within its walls as the first white family in the township. The live-stock brought in consisted of a horse,-" old Black 'Hawk,"-one yoke of cattle, and a cow. The land first chosen by Mr. Eldred was prairie-like in appearance, or in other words contained an " opening," some 30 acres in extent, which invitingly awaited the approach of the pioneer's plow.
To observers the improvement of these lands seemed an easy matter, and Mr. Eldred's real estate was then considered the most desirable one in the township. But with the completion of his cabin-which stood upon or near the site of William Nesbit's present residence-and the removal of his family to it, his difficulties had but just commenced. A small band of Indians, remnants of the once powerful Ottawa and Pottawattamie tribes, occupied the opening and claimed it as their own. Here, on the northern border, was their little village of bark wigwams, and farther out their scattered patches of broken soil, where the women had cultivated for many years corn, pumpkins, potatoes, etc. Here had been celebrated victories gained over their enemies, and the surrounding forests had doubtless reechoed many times with lamentations when defeat had attended their warlike expeditions. Their children had been born here, and here their dead had been prepared for the happy hunting-ground. The little prairie was their home; they were loth to depart from it. Who can blame them?
Yet had Mumford Eldred been less austere and more gracious in his bearing towards them, this would not have been one of the exceptional cases in, the history of the settlement of Southern Michigan in which the white settler and his Indian neighbors were at enmity. But Mr. Eldred chose a different course; he considered the land his own, the Indians as interlopers, and ordered them away. They demurred, and moved not. He plowed their little patches of loose soil and planted his crops. Upon their appearance above the surface the corn and potatoes were pulled up and the stalks scattered. His hogs, and for a truth "old Black Hawk," at last disappeared. After vain searches they were given up as gone forever, and he declared the Indians had stolen them.
Terribly enraged, he again ordered his dusky neighbors from his vicinity, threatening that unless they did so within a time specified, he would fell an immense tree upon their wigwams, or such of them as its trunk and branches would reach. At the expiration of the time allowed them the Indians were still there, stoical and unconcerned in danger as only Indians can be. Eldred seized his axe, and with lusty blows began the fulfillment of his threat. They watched him intently for a few moments. The chips flew rapidly from the incisions made with his keen axe, and at last they seemed to understand that he was in earnest, that it was only a question of moments when the tree would come crashing upon them, demolishing in its fall wigwams and household idols. They called to him to desist, promising that if permitted to remain until their chief, who was sick, was able to be removed, they would depart in peace. With this understanding they remained a few days longer, and then removed to the present township of Wayland.
As soon as vacated, their wigwams were burned by Eldred, and thus did he with his family become the sole occupant of the "opening." He was not fairly rid of the Indians, however, for they made frequent visits to the locality, and his crops and stock were always in danger. He had aroused a life-long enmity, and had not the Michigan Indians been so completely cowed, abject, and in fear of the white man's power, dating from the time of Tecumseh's defeat, Mr. Eldred 's career would have terminated ere he had a neighbor in sight of his opening.
Upon the death of the sick Indian before mentioned, his body was brought to the near vicinity of Mr. Eldred 's house. A square pen of logs was constructed, roofed with bark, and inside the enclosure, in a sitting posture, was placed the remains of the dead chief, covered with his blanket. Mrs. Eldred, who is still living in the township, wherein at that time she was the only white woman, relates that the sight of this dead warrior keeping his lonely vigil was a most distressing one to her. She could not step outside her house without looking in that direction. About one year after the death of the chief, Mr. Eldred had helping him one or two young men from Gull Prairie. Arising early one morning, they filled the pen with dry wood and brush, and then, setting the whole on fire, finally succeeded in cremating the remains.
In 1837, Mr. Eldred was elected a justice of the peace of Plainfield, and while Martin formed part of the old township he held other responsible positions. As justice of the peace of the latter township he presided at the first election in Martin, in 1839, and was also elected assessor. He died Jan. 24, 1870, aged eighty-four years. Mrs. Eldred still survives, at the age of seventy-six years. A son, Samuel, who was born Dec. 10, 1836, bears the distinction of having been the first white child born in Martin. Rev. Andrew Eldred, the first child of Mumford by his second marriage, is now a distinguished divine of the Methodist Episcopal Church. Listed as Number 1712 on page 245 of the Carpenter Memorial. No family listed.
CAUTION: The Robert Carpenter (number 1712) in the Carpenter Memorial is IN the wrong family.
His biological father William Carpenter (b. abt 1750 England) was the Robert Carpenter who died at the Battle of Bemis Heights on 7 Oct 1777.
He was raised by Abner Loomis, who was the guardian set by his father bedore he left for war.NOTE:
The following data is from Donna Hellewell of Aptos, CA.
Letter from Helen Fox, in NY. "To verify the lineage Mrs. Snyder sent, look at Bowen's "Woodstock Families: Vol. III goes from Wm to Robert. "A History of Palmer, Mass" has mention of Robert Carpenter in the Revolution, so I guess we can accept our records as correct."
NOTE: Donna Ione (Harris) Hellewell of Aptos, CA 95003-4205 (b. 1926) updated the descendants and related ancestors of Robert and Phebe (McNair) Carpenter in March of 2001. She is now deceased.
Her efforts replaced 765 records with errors with about 14,604 names. These new names have many many notes and sources. Of the 14,604 names about 8,580 are direct descendants of Robert & Phebe with spouses.
Donna, Thank You Very Much for your Efforts! John R. Carpenter - 8 March 2001.
Donna received tremendous help from Elma Carpenter of Battle Creek, MI, and Helen Fox of Canandaigua, NY, as well as many others too numerous to mention. The material in the submitted records have been sent to them from the individuals themselves and/ or relatives. They have also found additional information in official records, newspapers, and reunion notes. They will not be responsible for errors they have received as all material has not been validated. With all attempts for accuracy, they know there will be some errors, but none were purposeful. Please be charitable, they have tried very hard to be accurate. Some files were edited for grammar and/or spelling errors, and some were not.
We feel you, who are searching for your ancestors, will be saved countless hours if you find your name in this file as all people are linked to ancestors and descendants if they were known or could be found. The 14,606 names we are submitting to John Carpenter for his "Carpenter CD" represent over forty years of research. The cost to do this much compiling, has not been calculated, but it is a considerable amount. Please use the information we are providing with care, and respect the privacy of those you meet through this file. Thank you, Donna Harris Hellewell. Submitted in March 2001.BOOK: 2004

2004One record from descendants of his daughter Betsey, showed both Robert and Phebe's birthplace as Connecticut, but research shows this to be questionable as other records state differently, but since Connecticut shows up in records occassionally, especially in thier son, Nathaniel's records, perhaps further research in that area should be done. Their daughter Margaret gave (MI state cencus of 1884) Robert's (b. abt 1775) birthplace as, Massachusetts, and Phebe McNair's as R. I. (Which validates some other records). In the 1880 U.S. Census of Washtenau Co., MI their daughter Nancy, gave their birthplace "father unknown", mother: Connecticut. Calvin Loomis Jr., their son said in the 1880 U. S. Census of Athens, Calhoun, MI, father's birthplace was unknown and mother's R. I. In a biographical review of Calvin, it said his mother was born in Connecticut, so both places are again given.
National Archives, Washington, DC, Robert b. 1775 applied for a bounty land warrant (1827) which was granted to descendants of the Revolutionary War veterans. In the document it reads, "That in his childhood he understood and he verily believed that the said Robert Carpenter, father of this desponent, enlisted to serve during the war of the revolution and that in the summer of 1777 he belonged to Colonel Michael Jackson's Regiment in the Massachusetts line and that he was killed in Battle at or near Stillwater a few days previous to the surrender of General Burgoyne's army in 1777." Robert b. 1775 stated that he had a document to this effect but it had been burned when his house burned. (1808) Calvin (not Chester) Loomis, who had been raised with Robert (who testified, appeared before Cheser Loomis who then) signed the document as the then Justice of the Peace of Ontario County, NY. Robert Carpenter never settled on his Bounty Land. It was later sold and used for other land purchases.
Per Tami Kuginskie:
It was, indeed, successful and the documents generated when all the children of Robert (and their wives) had to sign off in order to sell the land for their move to Michigan are in my files! I've had this since 2006-7 when I joined the DAR and had to prove Nathanial was a son of Robert Jr.CENSUS: 1830 U.S. Census, Bristol, Ontario Co., NY.
Robert and Phebe have 5 sons and 5 daughters, same as in 1820, but Abner is now married and head of a household next door, and Sally is also married and is with husband, William Kaufman, in same area. Robert and Phebe had added William b. 1821 and Phebe b. 1823, so the numbers remained constant. Little Christine was b. 1826 but died in 1827 so is not on the census.PRI:
Ontario County Historical Society, newspaper on Election Day 3 Apr 1838 may have something about Robert falling from a wagon and being killed. Election day was the day Bristol was divided into South Bristol, and Bristol, Ontario Co., New York. <--- Need proper citation.BURIAL:
Tombstone for Robert b. 1775 is interesting as it reads "1762-1838." It is unlikely it was 1762 because he has older brothers and sisters and the last closest one was born in 1769, and we believe Robert was born later.
[ CAUTION: This last line is incorrect because it assumed Robert Carpenter (b. 1722) was the father and not Robert Carpenter (b. abt 1750) of whom he was the only son. ]
He was killed in a fall from a wagon in 1838 on Election Day when Bristol was divided and South Bristol was formed. Phebe's dates are questionable on the tombstone also, as are Sarah's. Phebe 1768-1867, Sarah 1720-1836. If Phebe had been born in 1768, she would have been 57 when her last child, Christine, was born, which is very unlikely. Phebe was 70 on 1850 census, so she was probably born about 1781 because Abner, her first child, was born in 1799. Sarah, Phebe's mother or Phebe's sister, would have been 116, (also unlikely). The graves of Robert and Phebe and Sarah McNair were moved from Naples to E. Springwater Cemetery in Livingston County by his son, William Carpenter, when his wife died in 1890.
Helen Fox's note: "The graves in South Bristol, called Flowing Well, were in bad condition by 1890. Nothing is visible there today (1996.) No doubt Robert McNair (Phebe's father) is also buried there, but tombstones were gone in 1890." When [the] tombstone was cut for the new cemetery, the dates were probably given incorrectly.NOTE:
On the back of the sheet orginally submitted to the archives is CORR C#5 10/17/60 5A or SA. This sheet gave them from Conn. (wrong, I submitted that sheet, and later found out he was born in Palmer, Mass., but it is believed that they did live in Conn. for awhile, or one of their children did, perhaps Nathaniel did according to his descendants).. Old Archive sheet is on film #1273776 in the SLC Family History Library.E-MAIL: 2016

Subject: Re: Carpenter Cousins
Thanks for the response, John, at this point in the search, any extra confusion is a bit disturbing!! I agree that there were Robert Carpenters other than my ancestor but, perhaps because of my focus on our line, I don't find it quite as vague as previously.
The connection to the Loomis family of CT with my ancestor, I believe, makes for some convincing 'circumstantial evidence' - up to and including the Land Grant information. (It also provides a possible connection - geographically as well as time-frame - to your Carpenter ancestors and mine, but that's a divergence for future efforts!!) I've found possible evidence that Abner Loomis moved from CT to Palmer, MA around the time that Robert Carpenter would have been there.
A reference to Robert Carpenter's possible connection to the same area in CT might pan out to support a more solid lead but, again, a divergence for later. Right now, I'm feeling quite happy to explore what we do know from the DNA.
My gut feeling is that my Robert is the first of my direct line here in the US, that he was born around 1750 and came here in his late teens or early 20s.
He might have been married before he came but (partially gut feeling and partially the Loomis connection) possibly married in CT (maybe a Loomis??) and moved to Palmer, MA with Abner's family. The fact that our DNA relatives (Gray, etc.) were in VA at or before the proposed immigration of my ancestor but he (likely) went to CT makes me think he wasn't a brother to them, but a cousin (which, with my limited grasp of DNA, seems to be borne out by the science??) At this point my investigative research capabilities are not up to that particular task.
Prior to coming to the US, he was in the Wiltshire area of England and relatives remained there until the late 1800s when George's ancestors came to Canada from there. At some point, an ancestor of all of our group made his presence felt in London where he begot a son who ended up in NZ!! Another cousin came from the same area in England and wound up in PA. Past that, we all seem to have been quite 'fruitful' and multiplied with great efficiency until the present day! I assure you, this is simply a theory and, as you already know, I have no problem veering in a different direction as the evidence dictates!! To date, however, my instincts have provided me with valuable framework, and I have a certain confidence in the fact that many 'possibles' have panned out.
I do want to point out that the graves of Robert, Phebe, and her mother were relocated and the birth dates of all three are, with little doubt, in error on the gravestones. None of the dates seem to have credibility. All available evidence points to a 1775 birthdate for Robert our patriot's son who died in 1838. There's no evidence at all that he could have been born earlier and much logical conclusion that he was not. Not sure where the notion that the Robert who died in 1838 could have been in the Rev War and survived to later claim he was his own father to secure a land grant based on that service?? Did I misread that part of your letter to Linda?
I know your main focus is on the Rehoboth Carpenters but I'm certain you, like me, are as interested in the interconnections of all the families sharing our surname. I reassure myself that, though you are incredibly busy, my missives don't bore you to death!!
I continue to encourage my relatives to submit their information to Carpenter Cousins in the hope that, eventually, all the connections will be clear and help me make the jump from England to the Colonies for my own direct line!! You've been so instrumental in the search and I thank you every day!!
